For those who own a Redline Eliminator; what colored cam are you using? I’ll be doing some tests this weekend!

    • @wilkinsnl

The one it came with…. I guess I don’t have the redline but the original. I will say this after playing on 3 different eliminator pedals (double chain, double belt, single belt) for about 15 years I hate the cam system on these pedals. They are plastic garbage that sometimes, in the middle of songs or takes just come off, especially on the slave pedal. I’m finally just tired of dealing with it. I’m in search for a different set of pedals.
I’ve used dw 5002’s before and currently have a 5000 single. I played the DW machine drive a few times, that’s my 1st experience with a direct drive. I’m still not sure it was my favorite.
I know you’re endorsed but I would just stay clear of the eliminators.

So redline is the 2050 model and demon is 3000 model the interchangeable cam system was and is still game changer... I use the red cam cuz its a radical progressive cam meaning a majority of the distance covered by the beater gives minimal resistance and the majority of the resistance comes in play at the end part where the beater meets the skin... So it sorta snaps the beater against the skin, very good for speed and power. Since its a chain drive you will still get the flexibility, the chain lag and the basic feel of a demon system.
You can try the blue cam its a lite version of the red cam.
      Black is the basic...
White is ig good for dynamics.
I mainly like the black and the red one. The only issue with the red one is that since its a radical cam (light feel at first hard feel at the end) slower tempos with full leg motion is slightly hard to maintain.

I'm still using the stock cam and haven't tried any of the others out yet, even though I've had my pedals for over a year. Curious to hear your thoughts when you've tried the others out; I've always meant to test them but since I immediately felt comfortable with the stock one i've just stuck with it. The only thing I'm tempted to change at the moment is the drive shaft to the trickv6 one that I think the demon uses, but £150ish for a smoother slave pedal is a bit overkill for me currently!

I used to have this pedal and I was using the red cams, although I would recommend using the stock - rounder ones (the cams you are currently using).
Also, try using the z-link from the demon on the redlines, it's way smoother and without any play.
Good luck with your double bass journey!

The blue one!!! It felt closest to a Roger's Swiv-o-Matic, which was perfect for making the move from single to double for me. I also see a lot of drummers using the blue cam too!

I've greatly enjoyed this series, Adam! As a drummer who went from playing a vintage single pedal for 15 years, to a modern double pedal a couple of years ago, I can honestly say these videos have helped me so much with refining my own double bass practice routine, and feeling confident that I made the right choice in the Eliminator Red Line as a great transition pedal! It can be so frustrating at times, so it is incredibly reassuring, and inspiring to watch you go through your own struggles making the switch; reminding me I'm on the right path! Thank you again! Cheers, and RIP Aaron Spears. One of the greats, gone too soon.

Just a suggestion regarding your pedal swap - replace the drive shaft that came with the Eliminator with the one from the demon drive. I played the power shifter Eliminator for years (and loved it) but the pin & block universals on that drive shaft are, for lack of a better word, bad. There is usually some slop in them right out of the box and it steadily gets worse over time. The drive shaft with the Demon drive is basically the same as the Trick driveshaft with precision bearings and has zero play. Just something to consider.

Thank you. This is one of your most useful series, Adam. To the average early or intermediate drummer, pros seem to operate the gear so fluidly that it seems like any hiccups or inconsistencies in getting on top of new genres or techniques or gear must the drummer’s problem - versus the reality is that new physical techniques & gear types DO take a significant amount of time and patience to get on top of! Unfortunately, are no shortcuts for us on a lot of this stuff. You offer a more insightful & detailed take than many online instructors, and that makes your content that much more useful!

I’m so glad for this series man, as we are literally working in parallel toward a similar goal. I have joined a legacy alt metal band with some reasonably fast double kick passages in a few songs that I can’t play, and I don’t want to suck in front of a few thousand people! My problem right now is 150-170 bpm. I’m learning the ankle technique from the ground up after admitting that my whole leg can’t move that fast and stay in control! I’m doing several things to dial this motion in as for whatever reason, it doesn’t come naturally to me. This includes taking the springs off my pedals and learning to bounce them off the head using full leg motions so I learn to sync with their motions, and several ankle building things I do off the kit. It’s a lot but it’s sloooowly working and I’m making tiny breakthroughs about the behaviour of my body vs pedal movements at specific tempos. Not mastery, just breakthroughs. I also had a lesson with Elitch about my general bass drum playing and posture which is playing something of a role too. After many years of misunderstanding bass drum techniques, it’s a long and frustrating journey, but I am SO stoked someone like you is posting stuff like this and being totally honest with it.

Sir Adam, for ultimate left pedal feeling, use your XR drive shaft on your redline pedals.. it will be more smooth and insane, and your slave pedal will be more identical to the main pedal

    • @AdamTuminaro
      @AdamTuminaro  5 місяців тому +2

I actually swapped them shortly after this video. Unfortunately they feel identical, but I suspect this is because they are both brand new. I’m sure they Z Link shaft will last much longer than the Redline stock shaft and ultimately perform better over time given its build quality. But as for initial performance they are virtually identical.

They’re heavy which is my perfect for my hard hitting preferences, and they were Aaron Spears signature. I see a lot of double pedal players leave their left beater on the head while playing the right. It sounds OK on UA-cam but in person (at least for me) it mutes the BD and you don't get a big full sound. Especially playing off the head but also when you burry. I barely lift the beater off so I don't mute. I see the left beater pressed hard on the head on a lot of you tube videos.

So this acoustic thing is def. something I've noticed with many metal drummers as well. They just don't seem to grasp how shitty a bassdrum sounds when you hit it 900x per minute. It is really important to think of some triggering method for at least the bassdrum, so the people in the audience can actually hear what is happening.
I use a simple 100$ roland trigger pedal and a roland bassdrum trigger. Soundguys will love you for just handing them the bassdrum in a jack.

Twenty minutes of rudiments will do more for your pedal technique, control, dynamics, and dexterity than an a whole hour of bashing away with singles. I understand that you're not likely to use them musically, but rudiments and "stick" control exercises are what will re-train your feet in a short amount of time. Gritting your teeth and bashing away at singles is just going to reinforce bad muscle memory. Please, I'm not trying to be a jerk, but you *don't have time for this*. With this time frame, every day counts, and you need to work smarter, not harder. I promise a small session of the old snare drum training re-applied to feet will pay immediate dividends.
The chain drive switch was a good idea. You don't need the speed advantage of direct drive at this level, and personally, I need a bit of "slop" with all my Moeller-style leg movement.

You’ve come to my channel multiple times to leave lengthy rants about personal opinions, while largely ignoring many perspectives that I’ve laid out in these videos. Not to mention the last decade’s worth of videos, where I’ve spent a few hundred hours elaborating on these topics. It’s literally my job to do so.
You’ve also made false assumptions, and then using those as axioms to build arguments.
“Gritting your teeth and bashing away at singles”…. I do not need a lecture about the inferiority of something that I didn’t do, nor have I ever recommended doing. Playing briefly with intensity (and then failing) makes for an entertaining clip, but I’m unsure why you’d assume that I’ve spent the last 20 years practicing that way. Especially given that I linked a 45 minute video in the description, which outlines precisely how I structure my practice sessions.

@@AdamTuminaro I'm on the autism spectrum, so please trust me when I tell you that I'm not trying to be a jackass or offend you, I'm just a technical guy and I don't know how to do the social thing properly. In my defence, I'm literally watching you grit your teeth and exerting a lot of energy on single strokes. I'm not trying to act superior, I want you to succeed, I just don't know how to say it properly.
Not to give you a sob story, but I have multiple disabilities and double-kick is one of my main outlets and areas of study in my life. When the masters recommend things like snare drum rudiments, they're not kidding around with nonsense. I wouldn't be able to play this stuff without their advice because my body otherwise wouldn't be up to it.

    • @AdamTuminaro

@@johnknight9150 I really appreciate the clarification, and I do understand you have good intentions.
Regarding rudiments on the feet, I'll have to ask that you refer Episode 3. I laid out all my arguments there, and rehashing them would take far too much time.
And as far as gritting teeth / bashing singles... it might help to know that I'm purposefully filming some of these clips for entertainment. As mentioned in Episode 2, the monotonous, repetitive, "real" practice is incredibly boring. It's the antithesis of what defines "watchable" content for a vast majority of the audience on UA-cam. And if drummers don't watch, UA-cam will bury the video, resulting in an entirely unsuccessful series.
Does excluding the "real" practice clips in favor of the "entertaining" clips make this series less valuable? Perhaps it does. It certainly fuels comments like yours, as I'm not showcasing the details of my genuine / personal practice time, and you're left to assume that what you've just seen in the video is a representation of what I do off camera as well. But it's not.
This is why I have an Online Drum School, where I've created hundreds of videos for the sole purpose of education. I don't need to entertain those who choose to take education seriously, and pay me to instruct them. But on UA-cam, my priorities are completely different. Hope this offers some clarity.

I did see the episode, and did hear the arguments, but if you'll forgive my counter-argument and persistence, although I understand your argument, I don't think the argument matches real-world data and collective experience. To be clear, I don't think rudiments are something you should be spending much time on, simply a few short sessions here and there (and arguing with someone like me takes more time than just doing a few rudimental exercises). The primary reason they will be helpful is that they will recalibrate your limbs, whether that be in terms of landing your foot in the right place in that tricky off-beat, or getting the right timing on your pre-stroke swing, for instance. But I've said my piece on that, I won't press the matter any further.
If it helps, and if you're interested in my background, I at least _hope_ I'm not just another internet random spouting unwarranted opinions. I've been drumming for twenty years, nineteen of which have been using double-bass (I couldn't afford a double-pedal the first year!). I spend most of my life with chronic exhaustion and spend more time with a viral infection than non-infected. This leaves me with a severe energy deficit, which means the study of technique (and the resulting energy preservation) is twice as important to me as it is to an able-bodied person like yourself. As my condition worsens, I can't do many of the things I once took for granted, but I can still double-kick if I'm smart about it. When the right technique allows me to play that Meshuggah or Gojira song, I'm sure you can understand the personal meaning and fulfilment that brings.
I hope you succeed strongly in this endeavour. Peace be upon you, brother.

Imagine clicking a video of someone openly documenting the improvement of their weakest skill set, and then publicly insulting them. You're an excellent representation of the venomous online culture that destroys the confidence of young musicians. I can also see that you leave these kinds of comments regularly.
But today you've picked on someone who's capable of calling you out. In case you haven't heard it yet, let me be the first to tell you to *shut the f*ck up.* The drum industry would be far better in your absence if you're going to show up with a nasty, cynical, and demeaning attitude towards those trying to improve themselves.

Would techniques like heel toe be using doubles on bass drum? Or am I doing them wrong? I do heel toe right heel toe left, so I guess that’s a double stroke roll?

Hey, brother, first ...Deepest condolences.... RIP Aaron. 💫
If you would do some clips about how to actually do that. I'm in the process of doing some recording and trying to learn how to program Midi drums. I was using cakewalk, but since they dropped support. I'm looking for something going forward. Probably go with pro tools. Any suggestions would be helpful. And I would look forward to any videos that you can do on teaching how to program midis, thank you very much.

Thanks for the kind words! To be honest, I went to my friend’s house to record because I needed help with MIDI myself. I’m certainly a novice in that department, but hope to get much better as time goes on. Incredibly useful writing tool.
But I can say with confidence that Logic is widely considered the best DAW for MIDI. Why exactly that is… my best guess is the ease of use and friendly interface design.
Best to ask an expert, but I’ve heard that Logic is king for MIDI since I got my audio degree in 2008.
