    The BMW 3 Series isn't just a nice handling luxury car, it's the standard by which premium compact cars are judged. Naturally there's a lot to like about this automotive icon but do those charms carry over when the 3's gasoline engine is swapped for a diesel? We aimed to find out during our year-long test of the BMW 335d. In this video KBB's Leigh Anne Sessions and Micah Muzio drive the 335d and share what the editorial staff at Kelley Blue Book thinks about BMW's diesel-powered 3 Series.

    This is the one BMW of the last 30 years I would consider ownership...intrigued by that diesel! Otherwise I think the company peaked in the 80's with the 535i and design of the 635csi. The current BMW sophistication of their cars may be impressive, but maintenance and repair costs have become brutal...

  • @3333glen
    @3333glen 13 років тому +1

    Very helpful review. WOT at upper revs is disappointing, but for 95% of driving the 425 lb-ft of torque probably makes this a better ride than a 335i.

  • @Hidezepickle

    I like how at the beginning of the review you mentioned that not many people know that bmw makes diesel 3 series, whereas in most of europe, diesel cars are by far the most popular lease car, and the 320d shines the most.

  • @hungrysurfer9471

    In US they sold the twin turbo 335d auto. You never got the much lighter single turbo 330D 6 spd manual. E9x series had 3rd gen turbos dating back to mid 2000s tech. With a 2023 5th gen turbo and emission filter delete, a 2010 330d is good for 360hp 520lbs torque over 50 mpg on the highway with no lag and it spools from 1400 rpm up. Also a £4k birds bmw handling kit with LSD makes a huge difference. Much better ride quality better body control, loads of traction and no understeer if you ask for optional anti roll bars. Mine has 342,000 on the clock now. Nearly 14 years old and I still love it. I drove the later F30 and G20 gens, they lack driver feedback and traditional BMW qualities. Plus I find the modern driver interference technology very dangerous, braking unexpectedly on corner exits risking a rear end accident or steering you back into middle of your lane when your trying to pass a bicycle. E90 gen was peak 3 series, they went downhill afterwards by not listening to customer feedback. If i wanted a fwd Honda shopping trolley id buy one, but i want a rwd bmw with lots of driver involvement steering feedback and no driver interference tech. So i ended up keeping my Birds BMW 330D all these years. I also have an Alpina XD3 but it never gets driven much. Very nice SUV, much better drive than the Cayanne V8 or Q7 but it lacks steering feel. At least the Alpina gives you a profile that you can set up with all the annoying tech turned off.

    @geedunk13 no the 335i is not a lot faster, it's only faster if you're racing at high revs. 90% of the time the d is faster because the low-end torque blows away the i's. Also diesel costs about the same or only a bit more than premium gas (which the i requires) but the fuel efficiency is MUCH better, so it actually saves money in the long run...

  • @juukame
    @juukame 14 років тому +1

    it still amazes me that diesels haven't caught on more in the states like they have in EU, it's ridiculous how many diesels are over there. i heard somewhere around 40% of cars in EU are diesel.

    very good review, but i thought bmw gives free maintenance, so why did you have to pay $400 for the run flat tires?and how much did you have to pay for the exhause fluid?is it something you have to do at every 20k miles?

    @TheVtieg6 well it might not do 4's and btw i said high 4's like 4.9 because it has 425 pounds of torque it is a very fast car and it sure as hell does not do 6 seconds to 60 that is a preposterous claim. judging by the lack of knowledge these reviewers seem to have about mechanics i dont think they know a whole lot about what they are talking about. Granted it was a good review with good info it doesnt seem like they really know cars.

    I had the 335D now for over a year, and I love it. The KBB is a bit annoying though. First, the cup holder is a not just in the 335D, all 3 series share the same cup holder design. And for the KBB guy, it is not an American car, so you really should just point it out without adding the "in America bla bla ...", after all, it is not an american car :-)
    Second, I m in Los Angeles, when I need gaz, diesel is always around the corner, and I never had to use the adapter either.

    @jbalti 12 років тому

    Last point, it seems the KBB review just figured out the putting a diesle engine in the 3 series is an amazing thing. I think it is time for this guy to buy round trip to europe, 1 seris and 3 series diesel are all over the place. BMW has been producing diesel for years, not really sure why this is new to a prefessional car reviewer!!!

  • @adogg619
    @adogg619 14 років тому

    "Why is it so rare to see one on the road?"
    Well here in the USA, people buy more gasoline cars than diesel cars. They haven't caught on yet of how much modern diesels are so much better than the diesels of the past.
    But I would definitely get a 335d. All you need is a retune and you'll be faster than a gas 335i and still achieve better fuel economy.

  • @lupischuckle
    @lupischuckle 13 років тому

    Gotta say, it's probably not just price that keeps these beauties off the road- it's also a North American fear of diesel. Europe seems to embrace this lovely little technology with gusto, but for some reason it seems Canadians and Americans shy away from it, likely fearing the noise and rattling cabin associated with early 80's VWs.

    It's a shame the Americans get toned down versions of what we get in the uk. This version of the 335d had 286bhp An got to 60 in around 5seconds An the newest versions of this car is like 4.7 to 60 in the uk so it's a shame these cars are strangled for emissions and performance over in the u.s. I'm sure most would agree.

    • @jeffyork6750

      Yes it's a pity we get "strangled versions" and are left to drive ..say... A Dodge Hellcat. 707 HP and 0-60 in 3.4 sec out of the box. Yeah we're weeping in the USA.

  • @bigphat200
    @bigphat200 13 років тому

    @Mynameelyk The reason is because in the late 70's GM converter a lot of gas engine cars and Caddies to Diesel and really screwed that up. It left a bad teast in our mouths and Americans have never gotten over it. I myself love these engines, even my lawn mower is diesel. This BMW is nice but it does sound expensive to own.

    You actually can fill it yourself, the hatch door on the left side of the bumper. Its supposed to last between oil changes and be topped off by the dealer.
    I hear you on the fold down seats. My '09 328 coupe has them, but that is salt in the wound of an expensive car. a $16K Yaris has folding rear seats. Cup holders, are worthless. 6.0 0-60 is a conservative rating. I would say its closer to a 335i.

    I wonder if an average American ever actually drinks the whole gigantic size of coffee/pop/soda/sweet tea, or throws it away after only having only half of it? The later is more probable. Solution: don't buy more than you need just because it's dirt-cheap. Also if you want a quart/liter size+ beverage to accompany you while you corner fast, buy a GM or Ford vehicle, or similar, designed for large containers. No hate, no mock, just facts. The 335d is a torque monster! What a sweet car...
