- Today I answer the question of whether I can do a whole video in Finnish, then I jump on Worddive (not a sponsor) and do some harder Finnish lessons.

"Farkut" is basically a shorter version of "farmarihousut" (which is a word that nobody uses), which is a combination of "farmari" (farmer) and "housut" (pants/trousers). And "farmari" is an anglicism, which makes "farkut" such a weird word.
Wat
i’m finn, and have actually never seen the word ”farkut” written down, and somehow it bothers me that it’s written with f. like i dunno what i expected, like it’s not like i imagined it to be written with v either, but it just bothers me. we need to invent a new letter to spell ”farkut”. 😂
I didnt even know this, huh
@I Love Memes nothing in linguistics is ever a coincidence :D
@I Love Memes According to wiktionary, 'housut' comes from an Old Swedish word, which comes from an Old Norse word, which comes from the Proto-Germanic word '*husǭ'. So, not a coincidence :D
I'm always impressed when someone says they don't know really any or much finnish and then they know so many words.. It's a hard language probably because the formal and informal languages are so different. And so many of these apps and programs use formal finnish, then you hear people actually speak and you're completely lost.
Similar to Japanese. If people only depend on anime for their language learning, they'll be extremely surprised when hearing a real Japanese speak. Anime is too informal, however, language schools are too formal. Conversational Japanese is really only learned from native speakers or teachers living in Japan.
"Pieni! Pieni kuppi." I spilled coffee on my laptop because I started laughing so hard :D

I live in a small town in Northwestern Ontario, Canada, with a very high Finn population and we have a whole area downtown with all sorts of Finn shops and restaurants. Best pancakes ever ... we barely even eat fluffy pancakes here haha.
We have a well-known restaurant with famous finn pancakes called The Hoito
A Finnish version of chinatown? As a Finn I need to visit that place!
What town is that, I am from Peterborough Ontario and have never heard of that place.
Exellent pronounciation. When he saw "pieni" he said "pieni kuppi" = small cup. Varmaan kahvista kyse (vaikka kuka muka juo pienen kahvin).
Juhlissa on niitä pieniä kuppeja yleensä. Ihan tuskaa, kun niitä pitää juoda tosi monta. Ei kehtaa santsaa niin paljon, kun haluaisi juoda
I am a Swedish speaking person from a Swedish speaking island in Finland. I have tried to learn Finnish in school for ten years. I think I know about as much Finnish as Joinen!

It's a BLESSING to my ears to hear someone who's not a native speaker speaking finnish, and still KILL all the pronunciations!!! The fact that you've got no idea what half the words mean and still pronounce them right is so magical
As a non-Finn learning Finnish in Finland, it's a bit reassuring to know I have more skills than a Finn.

Usually you can tell the difference between single and double letters by the pause. For example matto / mato (carpet / worm) There's a very slight pause before the double letters, but for a foreigner it's probably harder to spot
Actually now that you pointed it out I could notice it on some words in the video!

It's really fun to watch this as a Norwegian! 😁 Some of the words are kind of close to our language.
I think it's due to swedish influencing our languague a bit when we were part of Sweden :)
The video was fun to watch. I'm Estonian and the Finnish and Estonian languages are quite similar.
Estonia and Finland even share the same national anthem melody. :D
As a Fin, I approve this.
You did good job 👌
Dude you pronounced some of those sentences so well! Of course there was those small mishaps (like halpa/halppa) but I swear everyone would understand what you're saying even if you made some small mistakes along the way, they don't really matter :-)
Also "Kiitos katsomisesta" is correct and I was impressed.

I like how the video has been up for less than a minute and there's already 33 likes. Great work guys

I´m a brazillian watching an australian learning Finnish, but for some reason this is so much fun for me
listening to Finnish is hypnotizing. phonetically it hits my ear as a combo of italian and mynative Afrikaans although its so unique in origin. love u Suomi!
Guys, there is something I realized when I learned spanish by living in Mexico. You have to train your ears to hear all the different nuances. Something that sounds simple to you won't be simple to someone just learning the language. I had trouble hearing the difference between vowels at first sometimes, and Spanish only has 5 vowel sound! But then there are things like not pronouncing "leer" as "ler," or the difference between "via" and "villa." The last one was a problem I had after 1.5 years living there and was definitely fluent in the language.
So give him a break. It's not easy.
Putting the translation in the thumbnail was a pro gamer move.
No moi, I've been here since the beginning 🙏🏻 it's quite admirable how hard you try with Finnish after all these years 😂

Just found your channel an hour ago. I was so confused what you were saying at the beginning of your videos so I'm glad I found this.
You should totally collab with a Finnish youtuber/person and do a language video! That would be awesome.
You sounds so much like a moomin character I love it
I was today years old when i knew that no moi was well hello in finnish
as someone who left my native Germany at age 9 this is painfully relatable. I once spent 5 hours trying to convince duolingo I could speak German fluently and getting angrier every time it failed me. 😂
I loved this video.
I've honestly wondered if you were Finnish/ lived here in the past because you look like a Finn. Also, your channel name sounds kinda Finnish. I hope you continue learning Finnish. Even if it's with the dramatically slow WordDive.
And we are obsessed with Finland. If someone accidentally writes Finnish in a title the whole country is going to be fangirling that youtuber. Like what we did with Dave who lived or lives here. We basically claimed he was a Finn. And I'll start the same thing with you. I feel like you'll make a better national treasure than Dave Cad.
This video was hilarious. I could listen to you try to pronounce Finnish all day

I'm American and studied Spanish through high school and Russian through college, and moved to Russia for a year. I got used to seeing and reading Cyrillic everywhere I went. After a year I headed home and had a long layover in Helsinki. With experience in Germanic, Romantic, and Slavic languages, plus some Latin from being Catholic, I never thought that the Latin alphabet would leave me absolutely flabbergasted as much as it did in Finland 😂
as I Finn, I really like these videos.

First of all, Joinen videos are now my daily bedtime routine before I sleep and I love it 😝 secondly, I honestly have been dreaming of learning Finnish for a bit now, I love how it sounds! I learned some basics like numbers and common words but I'd love to actually speak it. I'm studying translation and a part of me knows I should get into more widely spoken languages like Spanish but god I want to learn Finnish 😅 one day!
Thank you. As someone who only started watching your videos recently I had been wondering why you open by speaking Finnish.
Your pronunciation is spot on! If you grow your vocab you'll be able to hold a conversation no problem and no one would automatically switch to English 😊
Omg I have never heard Finnish before this and hearing the pronunciation of numbers is really satisfying.
Thank you Joinen, very wholesome
