As a criminology student, I feel like this video can be very misunderstood.
So first of all, committing crimes can come from various reasons. For example stealing because you otherwise have to starve, upbringing, environment of people, social circle of people etc. Can influence the actions people take.
Let's say a person started with stealing some crisps from the store at the age of 14. Bad influence by friends (or lack there-of, as in they do these bad things to get attention from others) and end up pickpocketing, committing arson, vandalizing property etc.
Some even do it out of boredom.
By giving them the proper help after they realised that what they did just wasn't right, can stop them from doing it again.
That's why they're studying, picking up hobbies for example to not fall into bad habits because of boredom or to be able to get a job once they get out so they don't have to steal anymore to not starve.
I think that working with VR and such isn't just for funsies, but because they tend to be locked away from the rest of the world and have literally no knowledge of what's going on. By letting them know new developments and such, they won't get this immense shock by the change in the "real world".
I can't explain everything too well because I study it in Dutch as my native language isn't English, so sorry I couldn't explain it better...
I can promise you though that if a prisoner does not see their mistakes, they will not get this, what some would call, "luxurious" treatment. Like, a serial killer where we're almost certain about that they'll do it again, they won't be prepared on getting out again because they probably won't get out

in finland we have one serial killer classed as such by the fbi, michael penttilä. he's been released a few times and that's one of the rare cases when the finnish prison system doesn't work, when a person has an addiction to kill. thankfully the public has been informed about them a lot and this way when he gets released again i hope no more victims emerge.

@Guopi I am not sure. But I think after the 20 years in this case they can ask to be set free and if it is denied they stay in prison.
I looked it up. Apparently there is life which is for undetermined time and then there is for a specific time, for example 20 years. And after 10 (under 21 year old when the crime was commited) or 20 years the case is taken to court to determine if the person can be set free.

in brazil we have a similar problem when it comes to drugs, we don't have a law that says the especific amount of drugs of like if you have 10grams you are a consumer and if you have 100tons you are a drug dealer, so it up to officers to decide, so white people are always "consumers" and poc are always "drug dealers", even if the quantity of drugs that the poc has is considerably lower than the white people. So this poc end up being send to jail for very very small quantities of drugs whilst the, clearly, drug dealers, when white, don't

honestly this just makes me have respect for Finland. here in the us the prison and jail systems are incredibly corrupt and inhumane and are often times used to falsely arrest people for the sole purpose of free labor. and worse off it's mostly people of color who are targeted. those stuck in the systems often times get treated horribly and aren't properly accustomed to normal living once they're released.
i quite like that there is a more healthy balance between punishment and rehabilitation with the focus being more on the latter. It allows for a focus on actually snuffing out the problems that lead to the crime and can be way for more preventable measures.
plus Finland having free healthcare and paid student loans already wins them a lot of respect from me: an American teenager who can barely afford to eat who can't afford college and is terrified of when my childcare runs out
in conclusion: thanks Finland, very cool

I have a masters in criminology (undergrad was psych and crim) and work in the criminal justice system in my country, so i have studied this soo much. Finland is amazing! One reason (among many) America has so many people in prison is because its one of their main sourses of essentially free workers (its insane the percentage of stuff inmates make for that country!).
Prison is punishment to take you away from loved ones and society, not to treat them like animals during their sentence as well.
Education and humanity is key ❤️

Yeah, prisons in America are awful. And you cannot vote after. If you've been a felon, regardless of your charge you cannot own a fire arm, or sword, or bow and arrow... and you have to pay a heavy ass fine as well as all the cost of living in prison. It takes some people a whole lifetime to pay back. And good luck finding a job if you you've ever been convicted of any crime. It's horrible. I've personally never been locked up, not even in jail. But it doesn't take going, to see that it's slavery and injustice. We need huge reforms.

Of course they choose who will go and who will stay and there are policemen around in case one tries to escape but it was fun the last time. Btw it's not only prisonners but there are a couple of actual actors in the show to help. I think they also opened a theater right next to the theater they perform.

I don't understand why so many people are dead set on punitive justice. I am studying criminology and this type of prison system is way more effective than American prisons. Basically the lower the income the cheaper it is. Because we have a whole income tracking system that tracks how much you earn vs how much you spend (taxes, bills, morgages and other necessary payments) and based off that they can give discounts or bonuses for public services.

what most countries say its for: to get the dangerous people off the streets
what it's for in America: enslaving the poor and mentally disabled while sometimes slapping some richer people on the wrists a little bit for being too public with their crimes, and every now and then an actually dangerous person will do time, though never nearly as much time as the poor will do for the crime of being poor

I would like to say to the "you don't need subtitle." comment that people who don't speak perfect english really like that subtitle. I'm from Finland so english is not my strongest language. I still use it daily, I watch english videos but I have to say, that I miss most of the dialogue when there isn't subs. Sometimes I hear words wrong, sometimes I don't even know what the word is and sometimes it's just a fancy word with no meaning :'D But when I see the subs, I can read what the word was. It makes a big difference when you can read and listen at the same time. It's not because people don't speak english that well, it's because english it's not my main language.
I've seen people using that same argue when people ask them why they watch show/video with same dub and sub. They always say that it's not their main language so it helps them to understand it better, when they can hear and read at the same time.

The system in Finland is like... If you do crimes like murder and such you do end up behind bars for years but as time passes and you start to near the end of your sentence you are put to the open prisons to give you like a soft restart, rehabilitate and get used to the changes in society... However it also works as sort of test that are you really "yhteiskuntakelpoinen" aka. "fit to society" so in otherwords if you are put to open prison and show that you have not changed at all and use the time off you have been given to do crime again, you will most likely end up behind bars after evaluation why did you redo your crime.

I live in Finland and I do think these are a good thing. We just can't afford to keep people on prisons for all the rest of the life they have, so the best thing is to make it so that they integrate well back to society and won't reoffend. However I also feel a bit iffy about it when it's people who have murdered or sexually assaulted someone as that ruins lives and obviously takes a human life if it's murder. I just feel like there isn't justice for the victim or the victim's family. But at the same time I don't have any better options and still I do believe prisoners obviously deserve human rights, health care etc, and it must be so that the people leaving prisons are not worse off than when they came as it only leads to them reoffending etc. It's just tricky.
Btw I they must have some limitations on what the prisoners can do online if they have internet right? Like it is impossible to access some sites and not be able to message people without supervisions. Otherwise they can easily still commit crimes or at least be part of crimes or plan them even while in prison. Like let them study and play games if they want to, but it should be priority to keep the public safe.

Get to go where ever you want, not very many limitations, get to take university classes.

People who are hard of hearing need the subtitles too. Yes their accents don't make it difficult to understand them but many people use subtitles even when they can understand what is being said to make sure they hear everything properly. If anything they should have use subtitles throughout the video not take away from it

Healthy mentally people don't commit murders. All crimes are mostly result of circumstances. It makes sense that if they were given support and skills they are less likely to commit crimes again

I was ways amazed by the Norwegian prison system (very similar to this) and how it's humane. (UA-cam search)
People don't realize that psychological punishment doesn't work, just makes people even more resentful/self hate and socially pushed away bc of the stigma; it's a never ending cycle.
Here in the US, there's only a few jobs that would hire an ex convict. So most end up doing crimes again bc there's no social or economic way out, and thus end up back in. It's so sad.
Before anyone judges, please research prison history and hear all sides of the prison reform argument. Yes there's bad people out there, but everything is a nuance. The world is never black or white; we contain multitudes, it's what makes us human

i've seen some people comment about this so i'll lend my voice too. subtitles are really important, not just for translating from other languages. deaf, hard of hearing, english second language, auditory processing disorders, adhd, autism--all of these are reasons people might need subtitles to be able to understand and enjoy the same content as everyone else. they are an important accessibility aid for us and i use them myself everywhere i can find them.

    • @no.one.a113

I think the reason why he commented on it was that there were only subtitles when the Finnish people spoke, not when the narrator spoke. On a second note, I agree that subtitles are important and should be available everywhere, but I also think they should be possible to turn off everywhere (when the subtitle and spoken language are the same). I have autism and ADHD, and subtitles can actually be very distracting for me.

In Sweden we normally joke about prision food being better than school food (which is most times true) and that it would be cheaper to just be put in prision instead of renting a small apartment in the big cities 😂 But even if the Nordic countries has these good prisions, people Still don't wish to be there. And as all our info is open to the public, you can't really hide that you've commited a crime.
Chockes me how other countries got much harsher laws, scentences and has to pay for everything (school etc) when we're living proof that society is working as intended with these benifits

So when they get out of prison if they do what this sort of does it is it makes them more and kind compared to like other prisoners in other prisons because most of the time they will still come out hostel and commit more crimes so Finland is making the more happy is nicer probably teaching them some social skills too because it is scene that prison in better conditions make a lower amount of crime sometimes they will even stop doing crimes sometimes compare to the opposite

in finland a life sentence is max 24 years I think and usually it's a lot shorter than that actually. most of the time this works really well since the prisoners are actually treated as humans and can get jobs and normal lives even though they made mistakes in the past :)

Those open prisons are not for everyone. Only well-behaved prisoners can get into them, as well as before release. In open prisons, you can practise civilian life, not by being thrown out of prison immediately when your sentence ends. You can starting work or school during your imprisonment and finding freer things to do when you are released. You are immediately integrated into society, rather than only being able to start when you are released. Those open prisons are very strict. If you are late at night (they have arrival times), drink alcohol or break other rules you go back to a closed prison. So an open prison is not for everyone

Joinen, YOUR VIDEOS need subtitles. Subs aren't just for people speaking another language or "when people have accents so heavy we assume English-speakers won't understand". Subtitles are also for the deaf, hard of hearing and people with sensory issues. Every content creator should put subtitles in their videos.
