What is a column wheel chronograph? (excerpt from gearpatrol.com)
In a column wheel movement, a mechanism that looks like a small castle turret rotates one increment with each click of the chronograph pusher. A mechanical finger falls between the teeth of the column wheel to activate the functions. The column wheel movement requires precision in design and build, and the resulting action is perceptible to the user in the smooth and quick response, usually visible from observation. Column wheel chronographs are generally more expensive and not as common but are typically more desirable to watch collectors because of the level of quality and attention to detail in their manufacture.

Never would I have thought that the Seagull 63 would make it into the big leagues, but here it is.
Great selection. I'd include the new Zenith chronomaster original here. 38mm diameter, 46mm lug to lug, and the famous El Primero.

I’ve been watching this post quite a bit over the past day or two, and I must say, I’m impressed.
The Sinn 356 is an excellent choice. I have 1 black & 1 copper dial. Yet, I still crave the UTC version. As for the 1963, it is already on my shopping list.
The Seagull movement is based on 80 year-old technology but is also used by loads of microbrands so it must be quite reliable - a very nice piece of living history.
I'm an omega guy, but the sinn looks great. I've owned two of the other Chinese chronos and sadly had problems with both. Love your program and the content.

I have the Seagull in 38mm, with a sapphire crystal and swan neck regulator. For those wondering how accurate it is, I just checked this morning, and in the last four days, it has gained a total of 8 seconds. To me, that is plenty acceptable for a true manual watch. I guess I`ll just correct it at the first of every month and expect it to be 1 minute. I put a good quality full grain leather band on it, rubbed it in good with saddle oil and it is beautiful. Very satisfied.

I love your presentation, and find your videos and wrist shots really useful as I have a 16.5cm wrist, so not much bigger than yours. I did try a First Omega In Space, and thought the size was OK, but didn't like the polished hands. In the end I went for an IWC 3706 pilots chronograph on the bracelet, which is supremely comfortable. Than Sinn is very nice too, hadn't seen that one before.
just literally bought a sugess panda chronograph 38mm about 15 minutes ago ;) I cant wait for it to arrive

Vintage is the way to go for small chronographs. You can find some really cool 36mm Landeron or Valjoux powered chronographs from the 1950s/1960s for about 500 to 1000 euro.

@@youraveragepasser-by7367 the prices i mentioned are for serviced examples. Cheap ones that will need a service can be picked up for 100 to 250 euro. Definitely worth the effort/money if you find a decent example.
38 to 40 mm is a great size for most wrists. When I was growing up, 34 mm was considered full size, 36 to 38 mm was about right for a sport watch, and anything larger than 38 mm was considered oversized. Times have certainly changed.
I have long thought that anything larger then 41 mm is a little too big for most people who are not professional basketball or (American) football players. My wrist size is not all that small at 7 1/2" (19 cm, give or take a mm or two), and I find the sweet spot for watches is anything between 36 and 40 mm wide, and 44 to 46 mm lug to lug.

Great choice Jenni for smaller chronographs. I have seen the smaller Speedy some time ago, it looks a lot smaller then the 1863 version but also has a few benefits like automatic winding and a date function for those that want it. Quick date setting requires the little tooth pick tool using the pusher at the 10 position as it uses the heavily modified Valjoux 7753 as a base movement with column wheel and coaxial escapement. The smaller Speedy is also available as an Orbis International watch, an organisation that supports people with eye problems. The 1963 is also one I would like to look at but might just pull the trigger. I've yet to see a Sinn in the flesh yet but that should be another one to keep a blood shot eye on at some point.
I'd also recommend the new solar Seiko Speedtimer. 39mm with a lug to lug of 45.5mm. Just picked up the all black and it fits very nicely on my 6 inch wrist.

The Sinn is very well thought out, and the design is amazing!
The Sinn 356 Flieger II is definitely one of the best chronographs for smaller wrists, and has all the bells and whisles, the salmon dial is my favorite.
No tachymeter, though.
I'm one of those vintage weirdos and a lifetime member of the IBWC(the latter helps with the former😊), but if I had to buy new the Sinn would be top of the list for me. Not just with chronos either. Big fan of Sinn. I've had a few vintage chronos in my time. The Omega Speedie never sat right on my wrist at all so it didn't last long(only sorry I didn't keep it until the value madness kicked in). The one I still have is an early Heuer Bund and even though it's a 43mm watch it actually fits me pretty well. It's thin(handwound) and light and the lugs sweep down so that must be it. On the other hand something like a 41mm Rolex Sub looks ridiculous on me.

Coral Gables 🌴🇺🇸 I have the Speedmaster my Parents gave me for graduation UofM in mid 1960's ! Hehe It was worn on ALL my flights till I bought my first ROLER late 1970's. Great chanel 🏄
With my Breitling Superocean 44 Chronograph I started feeling the dial was too busy after awhile. This is definitely not a IBWC watch, but I like the presence and mine has yellow accents against the black dial look fantastic. With all this talk about Chronographs I've rediscovered it, and after 9 years it still keep nearly perfect time well within chronometer specs.
The recent and early 2000’s 39mm Carreras are a good option as well, my wife enjoys wearing mine when feeling sporty
I love the late 1990s Swatch Irony Chronos, I have the Sergio Garcia golf limited edition which shows the range of each club on the tachymeter scale, a really fun and very swatch like humorous and ironic twist; can’t fault your selections, all lovely.
Oh my, that Omega Speedy in 38mm/light blue sunburst is gorgeous!

I definitely recommend IWC Portuguesier Chrono or Chrono Classic. I have a 6.5 wrist and it fits me perfectly.

I own the Seagull chronograph and love it. It is the second least expensive watch I own, the Vostok is and has just as much history as the seagull. Just goes to show you that you don’t need to spend big $$$$$ to get enjoyment out of a watch.

Chinese made movements use very soft steel it will literally stop working after 10-15 years, buy a real watch pls Seiko is a great choice at this price point. The Seagull is not a real watch it's a watch-like object

The 38mm Speedy looks very good on your wrist! A little tall perhaps, but the colour is sublime and the size appears to suit you nicely. It's a robust design, but this colour gives it an easy going, softer vibe.....buy it when you win the lottery!

I had a oldskool speedmaster, never really wore it though, it wasn't comfortable on My wrists, I still kinda miss it though, I just liked looking at it lol.. had a really cool orange/blue on the dial..really retro.
Omega CK2998 pulsometer panda ltd edition. IMO the most beautiful speed master out there. It’s 39.5mm so not full size , but quite differentiated from the rest of the speed master range. No longer available though. Thanks for the vid.

I have a 1963 38mm and a Sapphire chrystal which I wear on a light brown Rios strap. I have had it 3 years with no problems.
Great selection of Chronographs. The Seagull is such a brilliant entry level timepiece, and so affordable. The now out-of-production Precista PRS-5 is similar to the Sinn Fleiger, but uses the ST1901 movement. If Seagull decide to produce their Chrono to the RAF specifications, to look like the Sinn, they would have a winner on their hands.
There are a bunch of watches with the ST1901 movement on ali and the Sugess pilot chrono is close to the PRS-5. So is the black on black Seestern MG Panda although that one might be 40mm only.
Be interesting for you to try the latest Speedmaster Pro with the new bracelet?

Omega out of those 3 was the only one to have Lume on the hands, and the indicies too.
Slight clarification... The Sinn 356 does have lume on both numerals and hands (sans the sub-dials and missing 3/6/9/12). You are correct, however, in that the main indices themselves are NOT lumed. Regardless, I consider legibility one of the strongest points of this watch. The hands just pop out at you by virtue of the domed crystal and excellent syringe hands. The 'needle' tipped pointer affords pinpoint accuracy when quickly checking the time. This is also due to the hand length and actual overlap between minute marker and hand tip. None of this vaguely pointing at a minute marker from afar with a blunt instrument. Refreshing, useful and often overlooked detail. While the indices may lack lume, the lumed numerals assume that function at night making for a very legible watch from a wide variety of angles and lighting conditions. Ok, I'll stop shilling now. :-)

Getting the Seagull for my wife! She loved it and was shocked by the displayback.
PSA The seagull 1963 reissue does not have a transparent back, it retailed for around $800 and probably more now and has never been discounted. You got a fake like everyone else outside of China. The only place you can buy a real seagull 1963 reissue is from its official stores inside China, with the flagship store located of course in Tianjin. Or from someone who bought it from there, with seagull paper and box. The first reissue has 21 Zuan text on it like in your fake and the second reissue has 22 Zuan text, both with fully covered steel back. I have one purchased directly from seagull, it’s built like a tank and works flawlessly, one of my favorite watch and a definite odd cat among watch enthusiasts, love it.

Try one of the speedmaster day/date watches from the 90s. They are smaller in diameter and some have amazing complications at a very good price.
I’ve never been able to get into the Chronograph segment of wrist watches.
None the less - fantastic video and visuals.
When it comes to servicing costs, it can hurt.....have a vintage Edox, almost as much to get it serviced as what it cost.
@@fullymechanical9055 ouch - that is painful. I’ve not gone through the servicing part with any watches thus far apart from my wife’s Chopard Imperiale - which was circa €400.
I've got a Seiko perpetual chronograph 7T86 (it's quartz), reference SPC251P1. It's 40.5mm diameter, 10mm thick & I'm guessing a 46mm lug to lug (I've not got any calipers). I've a 6"wrist & can pull it off no problem (but wouldn't want it be any bigger!). It's classy, looks sophisticated imho.
It's a curse having skinny wrists, but this 1 watch I can pull off & I'm happy to have it in my collection 👍
May I suggest to check also the Zenith A384 revival !
I also have and love the 1963 chronograph,it fits perfectly on my 17.8cm wrist and on the leather strap lies very close on the wrist........................................................

Jenni elle, what are your thoughts on the Speedy for someone with 6.75 inch wrists? Think we need to go for the 38mm or will 42mm be silly and too large?
Also, you may want to check the lug-to-lug length and if the lugs angle downwards for better ergonomics around the wrist.
I have 6.5 mm and I don’t have trouble with the regular Speedmaster’s size. I think you’ll be fine.

When i got my new seagull i had to return it right away because it would freeze seconds after winding. Heard it happens quite ofyen with this model.
How do the watch cushions in the role accommodate every size bracelet. Are the cushions super squishy or?
The wrist size roll is a genius idea, hate using a different strap hole to store a watch as it produces another wear point, or as you say the bracelet gets difficult to cinch and you worry you're stressing it without wearing it....I think the Longines posh collection has some smaller chronos and calender comps ...40 anyway.
I want to precise that Seagull bought the rights of the Venus 175 movement and from there slightly modified it to make the Seagull ST19

Great video, as usual! I guess I just don’t like the proportions of a chrono on my small wrist. The Speedmaster ist around 15mm thick and that rounded caseback raises the lugs off the wrist. I wonder if the Zenith Chronomaster 38 is any better in that regard?
Find a Reduced, it’s 12mm including the domed plexi and it fits beautifully on average to small wrists.

As someone with a 6.25inch wrist. The sinn356 is incredible sizing and it’s certainly more interesting than a speed master.
On the higher end, these 3 are on the larger size for small wrists but I’ve seen them work.

Thanks for this presentation! Sadly my arms are so thin that 36 mm is the optimum maximum size :( Happily, Seagull make a 36-mm chronograph with their ST1901 movement :) Just unsure about the rhinestones...
Tachymeter scale is like the flight computer bezel: useless in high performance aircraft. So I agree with you that it’s better to avoid them if designing a truly purposeful Flieger watch.

Where can you get this official version of the Seagull 1963? I cant find the official version (2 lines chinese text) with a transparent back to show the movement as shown in this video
The Seagull 1963 is a great watch..which I had the money to buy it..
I think the Baltany Type B chronograph would probably work very well on a smaller wrist. Like the Sinn, it doesn't have a tachymeter, but it does have 2 chronograph subdials to let you track periods of time up to 12 hours in length.

Oh Jenni, you missed perhaps one the most important chronograph 😭. The Zenith Chronomaster original. That’s an end game chronograph for small wrists. But….I love your content!
