      I might be wrong but I don't think you've already shared your thoughts on micro brands like Baltic or Farer. I know it is somehow controversial in the milieu but those 2 for instance are really affordable and in my opinion more desirable than the last Seiko generation (I would have mentioned an orient star, way more inspired models than Seiko recently and I am a Seiko guy!)

    You had me until you listed affordable as up to $4000 USD. Defining affordable is highly subjective however, I would argue a more universal definition of affordable would be closer to a maximum of $1000 USD. Above that, you start getting into the various categories of luxury.

      Hmm.. to refine that definition under 1000 USD might be affordable in 1st world countries. Because one grant is like a year of rent and food here in India. We see seiko as luxury watches here.

  • @steven3379
    @steven3379 2 роки тому +64

    I get that the "affordable" IS relative but anything over 1000.00 usd isn't, for most people, I might even go as far as anything over 500.00 usd. Good video, love your enthusiasm though 👍
    As a side note I have 4 Vostoks since 2016 and 1 70's Era Raketa and zero issues with any of them. For "perspective" my most expensive watch is the Hamilton Khaki Field Titanium Auto 750.00.usd (995.00 retail) I bought new in 2017, I have a small collection, Seiko, Casio, Hamilton, Citizen, Benarus, Zelos and my first watch purchase, when I was 19 (1973) a Pulsar p2 2900 still working today!

    • @m.e.p.r
      @m.e.p.r 2 роки тому +14

      Agree...$4000 is not "affordable". Maybe in Jenni's world :) The word affordable should always be used in context to the average median wage. In the US the average median for a household is $34k, after tax that's $27k to support a family. So spending $4k on a watch is 15% of that total income. I wouldn't class this as affordable, it would have to be at least under 5%, so maybe $1500 is more reasonable in the context of the US. Affordability is very subjective though, it really depends on what you value? I'm sure some people will disagree with what I have said here too :)

      Any watch over a $25 casio is a waste of money and it all comes to perceived value. Yes my luxury watches were a waste of money but I just like to wear them although I can know the hours just by looking at my phone.

    • @yobgol
      @yobgol 2 роки тому +2

      you're arguably working with the assumption that most would define affordable as being a regular ongoing expense or cost of living. with a watch, although mass production pushed most watches into very reachable in quick and easy terms, watches can also represent a key moment in life and something worked towards, given as a gift. you could argue spending anything on a watch is a waste when there's likely a phone in your pocket - arguably a phone more expensive than most watches, too. if you're in the 'buy once, buy well' territory, or look for a greater level of pleasure from something with characteristics beyond it's most obvious function, there are far more expensive watches than these which are also going to provide a more personal and rewarding experience over a far far longer period.

      @@VulgarRage who in their right mind buys a new $500-1000 smartphone every year?
      Given most watches are timeless (pun intended), there is the aspect of buying a decent one for a few hundred once, and having it run for a decade or longer. Also although most aren't going to hand down Seiko 5s, there is a much higher chance of giving a watch to a child or grandchild one day, than there is you giving them your old iPhone 3G in a few decades time.

    "Tudor...Poor mans Rolex"?
    I never saw a poor man wearing a 3K watch on his wrist.
    I think we don't need to use the point of view of Watch snobs.
    Don't get me wrong. But 3K watches are not classifyed as "affordable" from any point of view. Even some of those who buy pretend to be just "penuts".
    I'm greatful to have a very high income. But I was never intent to waste money only to be "respected" by strange people who I don't care.
    A true watch lover is about to understand watches. Not only by pulling the credit card.
    I think affordable can be seen in a range of three figures. And there are a lot.
    The mentioned Tissot Gentleman is one of them.
    But Also Junghans can be found, Circula, Swatch, Orient, some Junkers, Zeppelin, Longines, Bruno Söhne etc.
    Thank you anyway fir your video.

      Not everyone has the kind of disposable income to be able to drop $4,000 USD on a watch. They have families...kids mortgages, car payments, etc. Hey...you buy what you like and can afford. Personally I owned two Rolex's in my earlier years...but I was single and making decent money for the 1980's. Got rid of the Sub...hated it...and kept my Explorer 2 until 2005 when our townhouse was basically destroyed by Katrina...and it was ransacked afterwards.
      Now...I wear G Shocks, Bulovas and a few Crotons ( can't beat their lifetime warranty! I have yet to use it too!) I have a couple of Nixon 51-30's...which I love! With my 23 cm wrist ( basically 9 inches ) A 47 mm watch looks normal sized on my wrist. And actually, most of my wife's friends love my big watches.

    Liked the video, and agree that the $4K price tag on Tudors and a $250 Seiko don't belong in the same video. No one buying a Tudor is in the market for a Seiko 5 Sport. The Nomos is nice but at that price point I just don't feel it brings the value other brands do. The Tissot is a great call out and agree on the bracelet, it is what prevented me from getting it.

      Your Seiko and Tudor comment are way off the mark. Many collectors buying Tudor still love the Seiko 5 line. She was spot on.

      I disagree. My three most expensive watches are an Omega Aqua Terra, a Tudor Black Bay 58 and a Seiko SBDC101. I still enjoy watches costing low hundreds such as Seikos, microbrands and G shocks. It's really down to the individual and sadly lots of people are snobs who only care about the brand and the image it portrays.

      You missed the ‘at price points.’ Everything is relative. $3800 is affordable (for those making good salaries) relative to grey market Sub prices.

    Big fan! Thanks for always giving your opinions on these kinds of things. Not everyone can afford an "expensive" watch in their lifetime, one can dream though ;). Keep up the good work Jenni!

    I've used Seiko 5 SKX for bout 4 years now and it's been my everyday watch for all occasion. Well it's the only watch I've owned and i love it. I'm starting a new job soon and I thought I'd need a nice dress watch and I'm getting the Tissot Visodate with the brown strap and white dial. Love how minimalistic yet elegant the watch looks.

    Terrific list. I recently got the Black Bay in 41mm and my appreciation for it is growing every day.

    Terrific, well thought out list, Jenni. The Orient Star Classic Power Reserve with an in-house movement for around $500 or less is equal to a $3,000 Swiss watch. I also agree that the Orient Bambino should be on the short list.

    My favourite "affordable" Tudor was the North Flag. Such a great watch. Simplicity, durability and an in-house movement. In the actually affordable category there's a lot to like. Hamilton, Seiko, Citizen etc. I also have a soft spot for the retro stylings of the Certina DS PH 200M.

      Having an in house movement isn't a good thing, all it means is you can't repair your watch at an independent shop like an ETA movement can, only at authorized dealers and shops (aka way more expensive)

      @sdemosi 2 роки тому

      @@MybeautifulandamazingPrincess I have watches with ETA movements and in-house. I don't mind the expense of sending the in-house ones away for service. Watch retailers tend not to want to service anything these days themselves.

    4k is a "affordable" watch? The average per capita income worldwide is $10,298, according to the World Bank so, under 900 a month.

    Buying one more watch, any watch, than I need is a luxury. Treating yourself once in awhile or buying a nice gift for family is also a luxury IMO. At this point in good conscious I give the same amount that I spend on a watch to a good Charity. Smile Train and Voice of the Martyr I've been giving to for years. Peace and Goodwill to all.
