Zion - No Angel’s Landing Permit? Should you try Lady Mountain?

- Park Junkie has always enjoyed a quick hike up Angel's Landing when in Zion National Park. It's a quick shot to a great view, and provides a fine workout to boot! But now, the most popular mountain trail in Zion Canyon, is restricted to those who acquire an online permit, which are limited in number.
So what does an avid adventurer do when they cannot score a permit for this iconic hike?
There are many options, but one of Park Junkie’s favorites is a climb of Lady Mountain, which rises into the western skies across the road from the Zion Lodge.
This adventure is not for the novice hiker or climber, nor is it for ANYONE who has ANY fear of exposure or heights.
The route is a constant exposure-fest, with few retreats from a sheer cliff edge that is present the entire way up the face of the mountain.
There is no "trail", & the scantily marked route is notoriously difficult to follow.
However, for those who want a true Zion summit, this baby just can’t be beat! The reward for this suffer-fest is a lonesome summit that provides the most stunning view of Zion’s high-country that can be found anywhere in the area.
Here’s the best online guide I could find for this journey.

& a second source which includes a bit of history on the route.

Wow! I'm impressed with your ability not only to climb this, but also to film it!
agreed👍🏻
Wow, this is an incredible climb up Lady Mountain. Great job.
I work at Zion lodge and a few years ago a fellow employee went up and fell a hundred feet or so. He broke his arms and legs. He had to be air lifted by a helicopter to the hospital. He was extremely lucky he didn’t die.
I appreciate all the backtracking camera work! Thanks so much for bringing us along. Flipped my stomach a couple of times! 🫣
Same!! I keep saying to myself that he had to be just fine as he had posted this video! But holy cats.
Thank you! Where have you been? Needing another video soon please
I'll be back to finish watching Thanks Park Junkie
Wow, wow, and wow! Thank you, thank you, thank you for this beautiful behind the scenes hike. You are so thoughtful to include tips, tricks, and know-how on this beautiful trek along with your thoughtful camera work. You made me feel like I was on the hike with you and I appreciate your effort to include me.
I second that
tell all your friends Todds channel should be a lot..lets help Todd acheive this ..I just love his channel ...Have you seen the one the bear charged him and his friend in jelly stone ...this channel rocks if u ask me..
I just started a channel last month with lots of similar content! please check it out if you're looking for hard hikes and scrambles like this!
PJ.Tod C. You definitely made the hike twice with All the camera setups..great scenery ,great adventure ,Thanks for bringing it! Stay Safe!
up-up -up model! I use this mantra for doing things that are hard or take a long time.! keep going! thx Park Junkie!
I liked the way you illustrated the cruxes. I've gone up 2x, and I'm sure I was a lot more awkward. Very nice summary with a frank assessment of the difficulty.
For someone who doesn't even like climbing a ladder this was almost more than I could handle. Glad you and many others enjoyed it but I'm always glad you climbers get back safe. Gave it a like with much trepidation. LOL
Thanks for the fabulous hike !
Oh my…. I am too old and fat for this hike…😅. Thanks for letting us tag along.
That has some awesome views TC PJ my legs hurt from watching you
Thank you, thank you for this exciting trip to a place I would never go. My heart was in my throat the whole time! I agonized over every step and got dizzy when the camera looked down! Stay safe Park Junkie! I look forward to more adventures with you.
Whoa!!! You are brave. That was unreal.
Just spent a week at Yellowstone and every where we went I could hear your voice describing the features of the park. Yellowstone is a incredible place. Thank you for all the videos you make and keep up the great work!!
I was there in early September and heard the SAME voice! Lol. Missing his videos now though.
Impressive! U & the Mt!
I’ve been up Lady Mountain before. It’s not for the average person. I’d never refer this to anyone who didn’t get a permit to Angels. I didn’t use any rope. I just went up. It was awesome!
Superb climbing!
Thanks for doing that hike so I don’t have to! 🤣
Amazing!! My days of doing this climb have sadly passed me by.
🤩WOW🤩 Park Junkie! What excellent camera work on a climb like that! Loved you taking us on this route. It's nothing short of spectacular. You're a braver man than I, Gunga Din. Once again, an exceptional adventure to explore with you. Stay safe out there....😮😊
Wow! We love challenging western hikes however as a native flatlander Floridian, I don’t have the life skills for this one. I am thrilled watching you do it! Thanks for taking us along!
Amazing. Nice work Park Junkie!!!. Envy your energy. Keep up the good work and show me around the hidden area of the National Park.
Hey Park Junkie thanks for taking a lot of us to places we’re probably never gonna make it to.
My Pleasure!
THis has great editing and the work put into this thank you
I wanted to do this many years ago but there was no video, I started it but got sketched about getting lost. Wish I had this video, it's great. At the time I was a 5.11 climber outside so the technical sections would have been no problem.
I just started a channel last month with lots of similar content! please check it out if you're looking for hard hikes and scrambles like this!
Thanks again for an incredible adventure! Amazing!!!!
Well Todd, your knowledge of and dedication to the area you are hiking is impressive. Your hiking and climbing skills are are always fun to watch. Keep on truckin!

Just wow…amazing shots and views. Thanks for your work! It’s so beautiful there!
🥾🥾😎
Wow. Maybe you could get a body mount for your phone- that looked so scary. An amazing effort considering you place the camera so we can watch you climb. I really liked the time lapse at the summit. Emerald Pools is my speed.
Dude !! You've got some amazing skills !!!!! Thank you for sharing 😀 You'll have good knees when you get old
Incredible route and video taking. Super job!
Thanks Park Junkie. I could only watch about half. Don't like heights! Glad you made it!
Nice video Todd. Felt like we were right there with you and enjoying the incredible scenery. Keep up the good work! 🎉
Wow! I salute you. Man, that was crazy!
This is absolutely amazing!
So interesting to watch! Scary! Very talented!
Thanks for taking us along and showing the amazing and scary views. I won’t be seeing that one in person unless a helicopter wants to drop me off up top! Great camera work
Oh nah, I'm good. And I thought climbing the East Summit Trail of Pinnacle Mountain here in Little Rock, Ark. was exposed and kinda scary. There were a couple spots of steep boulder scrambling high up where you can see the view behind you where I felt my anxiety acting up and I had to stop and calm down. 😂
Thanks for scrambling up (and back down) that canyon wall so I don't have to! On the less-sketchy side of the video, the bike ride up into the canyon has one of my favorite spots in Zion--there's a huge boulder on the right side of the road with a flat surface that reflects the sound of the Virgin River at you as you go by. With all of these permit systems and trail closures I'm really glad I started my National Park adventures in the 80s.
That is some awesome and dangerous scenery!
Respect man👌🏻....awesome scenery😍...thanks for that🍻....greetings from saxony🤙🏻fun to see you and stay safe!
So fun watching the climb. I'm past my time of doing that now, but it's the next closest thing to doing it myself. As a old iron worker I could climb an ice wall covered with motor oil, lol., But everyone has their limits. Best to know them and not find out the hard way and wake up dead. Seriously. Great stuff bro.
Holy WOW! Seriously, the trail is marked with painted arrows on rocks? You definitely get props 👏
Amazing!! you are da man!
Awesome!
I love doing hikes like this, but a couple of spots on this climb are out of my league. Zion is really a beautiful place-thanks for taking the risks and making it out safe!
I just started a channel last month with lots of similar content! please check it out if you're looking for hard hikes and scrambles like this!
At last I got back to watch this one. Holy....! You Park Junkie are full of surprises. I've never done anything like this. You are also a great teacher as well and a generous person also for giving pointers for people who might try things like this. So let me say our National Park System needs to use some of your stuff, give you a loud honorable mention and a piece of the gate. You sell our parks like no one else. You should be a spokesperson really. I know, I know don't go crazy. But I think about what your doing all of the time while hiking going back to get the camera or climbing up that chimney thing, going back down so you can clime back up, get the camera and move on? For Pete's sake did you call the bears back for the second insert edit? lol Your a good man Park Junkie. As always thanks for your work so potted plants get to see what you see. Happy trails :-)
Such great videography. Sometime you should do a video on how you do all this filming by yourself. 😮
There are so many permits issued out at Angels Landing! You can see from the road the whole row of people climbing, so I wonder how you get them??
What’s happened to the Park Junkie he hasn’t posted a video in over three weeks.🤷♂️😳
Hey, Park Junkie...... 28.5k subscribers are concerned that you haven't posted in over a month..... today is 10-20-2022
Yes! Got on here to read the messages just to check on him.
Holy cats! We are not worth you not having both hands free! I’ll chip in for a chest mount cam or something! Yeesh!! I mean you are nimble and agile and strong and all but goodness.
Saw the little lizard. Are rattlesnakes up there ever?
Frankly, I think it would be a lot trickier getting DOWN!
Three weeks and no new hikes. ☹️
Awesome. Did you find the lady on the mountain? We asked several rangers where the lady image is located and no one knew for sure. The Par'rus Trail is my speed. You can't park across the bridge or walk across anymore so the bus stop is not open.
Hi i like the video👍
I'm taking a trip next week on the 27th of October 2022.. how do I get to the trial of Lady Mountain I would like to climb it when I'm there.
Did you hike Lady Mountain to the top??
@@citrusmixer1313 hey buddy..no i couldn't find the trial to lady mountain🤷 but i did do all the other trails even angles landing without a permit lol
So how do you get the shots of yourself? Do you have a silent partner or do you climb the portions twice? If the latter, then you are a man of stone, my friend!
Hope you doing okay.
Can't you still get to Observation point from the East Mesa trailhead?
Todd way cool what a climb you are the shit brother
Never knew this "trail" existed. Alltrails only has 50 reviews. I suspect because it's not hiked often. This "trail" is destined to get more traffic in the coming years with permits hard to get for AL. Sure wish the NPS would repair some of the trails that were closed after the rock fall last year. If they don't, people will develop their own epic hikes.
I just started a channel last month with lots of similar content! please check it out if you're looking for hard hikes and scrambles like this! the alltrails route on this hike is wrong btw...
Well anything new ☺️
I'm only 5 foot tall. I can't hike this lady mountain . Beautiful though.
Well, it's a possibility, but you'd better be a nimble 5' 😁
It's about a mile up, but it's straight up! Cheers!
What is the reason for permits? What are the consequences for not having one?
Lower the number of people hiking at a time for safety purposes. From what I understand they check for permits at the trailhead; if you don't have one you don't get to go.
No thank you, I’ll just sit in a chair with a cold beer and look up at the peak, that’s enough for me
Seriously you this by yourself?
Where's Park Junkie? Hope you aren't hurt or something. Hiking alone, the "something" part scares me.
He posted on his personal fb page on 10/12 that he was in Utah.
@@DebCamPhoto That's good. I don't do Facebook tho. Wish he would come on here and at least signoff.
Nope ! Not for me. Qudos to those who enjoy doing this. 👍👍😊
Too scary & you should not be climbing alone plus filming….too dangerous!
I hate the entry reservation garbage the NPS is doing at so many places. Lower middle class working people like me are the ones that get screwed over....gotta keep that riff-raff like me out of the rich folks and elite outdoors types way.
It’s not a perfect system. The reservations are only $2.00. That part doesn’t feel limiting.
How would you solve the overcrowding and overuse issues? We live near Rocky. The crowding has been intense for years.
@@penelopebartell840 it's not the price, put some real thought to it and you will figure it out. A lot of us can't just go whenever we want, or more specifically whenever the government wants.
@@harlandeke Yes. I'm no longer able to go whenever I want either, during the summer. We didn't go all year until last weekend when I was able to get spots on a hiker shuttle, later than I would have preferred but early enough to get the hike in that I wanted to do.
I used to head to the local NP often, after work, or on a random weekend day. And sometimes the desired trailhead parking was full and we had to turn around and go to plan b or c. A thing I try to avoid in most of life is the time wasted waiting in lines. Who wants to spend the day waiting in line and then waiting for a parking spot?
Lines during the high season stretched into town. For an hour, spent in stop and go, even to get to the entry point where the annual pass used to permit automatic entry at the gate. It was pretty awful.
How to handle the excessive crowds in places that are not equipped to handle (and shouldn't most likely due to the excessive stresses on the system). The parks are not fun when they're crowded.
How would you solve for this? What we had wasn't working, as visitation at our closest NP has been up each year with record numbers of more than 4 million visitors each year since 2015. The pilot reservation system is not great, especially for locals like me and perhaps you (if you're local to a NP) and I don't know how best to solve it. I rarely plan in advance. I plan around the weather and work.
We've been seeking out other options at state, regional, national forest and other wild places. And waiting until the shoulder and off season. The popular places still fill up in winter at peak times, but at least we can enter whenever we want.
