  • Park Junkie hits two prominent peaks in one day in this Yellowstone Flashback.
A beautiful July day sends PJ out on the motorcycle, in search of adventure. With the Yellowstone’s north loop lacking its usual crowds following the floods of 2022, he decides to take advantage of near vacant trails & heads up Bunsen Peak for a midday stroll, which is followed by a well deserved ice cream bar at the Tower Fall General Store.
Not quite satisfied, PJ then opts to hike Mt Washburn for sunset.
These hikes combined to provide a simply gorgeous summer day in our first national park.
The very next day, PJ would climb First People’s Peak with his buddy Clint, where they encountered the Mama Grizzly & her Three Little Gangsters.

Great video. Unlike many other UA-camrs that do videos about Yellowstone, you really appreciate and understand the mountains, waterfalls, geysers, creeks and the wildlife.

    Fire Lookout
Mount Washburn is one of three fire lookout stations in Yellowstone. It is continuously staffed from mid-June until the fire season ends. Fire lookouts are staffed by firefighters trained to detect and locate fires, monitor fire activity, and report significant changes. They spend the summer living alone, watching for signs of fire.

    • @theparkjunkie
      @theparkjunkie  Рік тому

Yes, I see you do your research. I wonder about the other three. I found one on Sheridan, but it's not staffed. Then the low country backcountry cabins are scattered all throughout the park.

That’s where we get most of our cell service in the park from the tower, and also a visitor information room where you can get out of the wind is located at up top

Mt. Holmes and Mt. Sheridan are no longer staffed, is my understanding, although in extreme fire seasons they might put a staff member up there just to keep an eye on things 24/7. The fire lookout on Mt. Washburn is also there to assist flatlanders who've bitten off more than they can chew as far as the exposure, altitude, and temperature are concerned.

Holmes and Sheridan are no longer manned for quite awhile.

I loved the Washburn like. The building is a ranger look out. Also a visitor center . Kool inside. Telescope to look across the Tetons 75 miles away. I was lucky enough to camp on the outside of the Tetons a few nights later.

I'm playing with music, and nature's music... Some prefer one or the other, so I'm just kind of seeing what works better for each video. This one I felt needed no music. Glad you enjoyed nature's fine melody.

Hey PJ! This was a great video! Thank you! 😁 We are in a blizzard in West Yellowstone right now, so it's a treat to see images of the Park from the awesome July weather. What a tremendous summer it was here. I have to say, you did a LOT in 1 day! I hiked MT. Washburn in September and that was the bulk of the day, although I spent quite a bit of time at the fire tower. What a view the Ranger has from there! You're right...nice gig! What an awesome day you had! 😀 Thanks for the tour of Bunson Peak trail. I used to live over at the other end of that trail at Park employee housing but never hiked it. Now, it's on my list! Hope you are doing well. Keep doing what you're doing, and thank you for sharing 😊

Great update as always! We appreciate your comments as you bring us along on your adventures!
We did Mt Washburn a few years ago and the viewing tower was open. Public can use the spotting scope to find the bighorn sheep that frequent the area. Views are spectacular in spite of the structure.
That day a local rancher brought in horses for the Washburn trail and let our 4 girls ride the trail down. Quite a day indeed.

Re: getting back into condition after a layoff--boy, I hear you on that! (In case you haven't noticed, it gets harder every year). I love how green everything is in Yellowstone at that time of year. Bunsen Peak looks like a nice hike, I'll have to check it out the next time I'm out there. Your slip on the trail reminds me of hiking Washburn about 20 years ago. At the very end of the hike--about 50 yards from the car--my friend tripped on a rock and fell. Big gash on her knee, a lot of blood, but luckily it wasn't bad enough to require stitches. Just a reminder I suppose to not to get too lost in your reveries when you're on the trail.
