Joshua Tree - Climbing Queen Mountain

- This Park Junkie Flashback takes us to Joshua Tree National Park in February of 2021, for a climb up the park’s iconic Queen Mountain.
There is no trail on Queen, & the route is not that easy to follow, but shouldn't be difficult for seasoned mountaineers. The scrambling required to summit the peak never reaches the 5th class category, and if it does, one should be aware that they are definitely not on the route shown here.
Joshua Tree is a park best visited in the winter months, in my desert-rat opinion. Temperatures are nice, and weather systems lend the area an incredibly hospitable climate for these months.

Hi Park Junkie. Thanks for putting up this episode. I'm glad it was a good day. Can't wait to see where you go and what you are going to do next in 23.
Thanks Simon, 23 looks like it should be fun! Got a trip planned straight out the gate! Something a bit different... stay tuned friend!
Extra props for the Big Lebowski reference, brother! 😂
That was a good little hike, don't get any cactus in your legs 😉
JOTR is such a great place for bouldering. Nice hike.
Nice rocks out there… those things are SOLID
Love Joshua tree!
Love also the hike in hidden valley , thank you
Boy Scout? Or Keys Ranch? Boy Scout runs north, out of the park. Did that one too. It's cool, but I enjoyed this mountain hike more than any of the trails.
Thank you for sharing that. It was very interesting and lovely to watch.
Thanks!
Love ypur videos. I'm no longer able to do this type of stressful hiking so I enjoy your videos very much. Thank you.
Thanks Barry, out traveling now, so should be posting some new stuff soon! Cheers
Thank you
Good stuff!
mountain climbing is awesome i like
Me too!
Nice video. Thanks for sharing. I hiked with you. Merry Christmas Todd. Bye
Merry Christmas my friend…
Getting back to your backcountry permit story- a couple times I camped in state park campgrounds, arriving without a reservation. Both times I had to pay a "reservation fee", even though I did not make a reservation. They said it is required for all campsites, regardless of length of stay. I recall it being around 16-18 dollars each time. Ridiculous
Yep, & that likely goes to Rec.gov, but some state campgrounds use Reserve America. Same thing, just different.
It’s all a scam. We’ll get into this on the next news feed.
I like to watch you do these summit hikes since I can't do to many of those myself these days. It's funny because I just went through my JT pictures this weekend. We had snow and wildflowers in 2019.
Yeah, this one is a bit of a trek, short, but a trek. Fun park, especially this time of year.
Wow
Hoping on doing some trails in this area. Thanks for sharing!
The trails around Barker Dam are probably my fave… cool rocks! Don’t forget the cholla garden!
Merry Christmas Tod and a prosperous new year! Thanks so much for all your wonderful videos!! Stay safe and God bless!! ❤️
Thank you Vonda! & a Merry Christmas to you too! Cheers
One of the most fun hikes in JT, especially in the Spring when everything is blooming. Definitely not the trail to meander too far off unless one likes that kind of pain.
Everyone has teeth out there, & they all use them too!
Really enjoy and learn from your knowledge of plants and rocks
Thanks!
great job Todd Merry Christmas 2 you and your family..hope u r enjoying your parents Todd ..parents are a major blessing
Merry Christmas Hank! Enjoying time w fam while I can... Gotta hit the road again someday!
Good to see you out trekkin'. Been to that place about twenty years ago. Supernatural place...resembles Mars IMHO. We did some scaling and made our own fun. 20:11 Total consciousness.
Total consciousness bro...
Wow, you sure had a beautiful day for that hike! I've been to JT many times--my first visit was a camping trip over New Year's when it was cold enough overnight to freeze our water bottles. (I foolishly thought it would be warm in "the desert" in the winter--little did I know!) I always put a Gram Parsons CD when I'm driving through the park. Until next time, happy trails!
I used to assume it was warm in the desert too… A couple of cold nights in my early 20s told me differently. 😬
That looks like fun, but I don't think my 79 year old husband and I could scramble over those rocks! Merry Christmas and thanks again the the ideas!
Well, there are other options nearby… this one isn’t exactly on the park’s suggested trails. 🤷♂️
This should be fun. Last time I was there I think I was 13yrs old at the time. And for some silly reason my dad only visited in summer. LOL At least it's better Temps there now. Thanks Todd! Glad you are still filming despite the stupid ruling. I enjoy watching you and "hiking with you" vicariously. I just turned 70 on 12-05 this year. If I was 30 years younger...lol. I am an old, old desert rat!
Oh man, sounds like your dad liked it hot... Summer can be brutal out there!
@@theparkjunkie Yeah my dad loved the heat. I remember driving from LA to visit family back in 1960 to Maine. We did not have A/C in the Chevy station wagon at the time. So imagine driving through the California desert to Needles in the daylight in August. Then through Arizona and New Mexico, up through Amarillo and on to Oklahoma City. All the side windows were open and we had a huge bag of ice on the floor infront and my mom would give us mugs of ice to suck on. Now add on, we'd leave our house on Friday at around noon, and my dad would drive all day and all night and all the next day until we stopped for a motel room, at Oklahoma City! And remember, I-40 was still being built, so most of time we were on two-lane only highway! Good old Route 66. I was only 8yrs old at the time and I still remember those long trips every summer. (My Dad had A/C put in the next year. Thank gaud!)
So yeah, he loved the heat.
@@lindabriggs5118Those had to be great trips tho… 🤙
@@theparkjunkie yes they were 😃😄😊🤙
If you are the same park junkie I met your mom today when I was getting my hair cut in wheelersburg......she was teo us about your UA-cam channel. Btw nice videos
Lol, that’s correct… she just got her hair done for Christmas. Mom taught me all I know… Glad to have you along!
Have you been to Gold Butte National Monument?
My wife s and I spent 5days hiking there and I won’t go back. Just not that beautiful
I like Green and trees.
Yeah, I found the hiking trails here to be kinda so/so... Some were really cool, but some were just okay... So I went out in search of something different. The park's 4x4 trails are kinda cool too.
What kind of hiking shoes do you recommend? Anyone?
I have been rocking a few different types & brands. Altra Lone Peaks gor lightweight trail runners, & La Sportiva X3s for more rugged stuff.
Hi Park Junkie did you need a permit to film in Joshua tree? Do you need a permit to film in national parks even if you don't make money on youtube?
At the time of this film, no I did not need a permit. Now, a permit is required. There is legislation moving through the Senate which seeks to change that, stay tuned, as I have an update on this issue coming very very soon.
@@theparkjunkie great thanks so much, I hope this ridiculous law gets removed soon! 🥵
