Grom Mods - Chimera Intake - Power Commander V - Worth it?

- Assuming you're already running an aftermarket exhaust and are considering purchasing the chimera air intake and Power Commander 5, I use a set of speed runs to determine whether or not these Mods are worth the money. See the results for yourself.
Mods discussed in this video:
Yoshimura Exhaust (I use this): amzn.to/32JqCxb
Chimera Intake: Chimera Intake (I use this): amzn.to/3eRI5pJ

This was a very kind informative service you did for Grom enthusiasts. It obviously wasn’t the easiest thing in the world to do and you didn’t have to do it. Thanks.

Bruh you only have 7k subscribers I thought you had the popularity of Photogromer. Definitely a great channel and content! Thanks so much.
I really appreciate the compliment! Thanks a lot for watching and supporting!
Just got my Grom a couple weeks ago, so glad I found your channel! Keep it up and love the smiling and happy feel! Love my Grom!
Congrats on the grom! I'm glad you're enjoying the content, thanks for watching!
What an awesome video. Great editing too. Hope to see more like this!
really appreciate it brother, thank you so much for watching!
This video is SO VERY WELL PRODUCED and INFORMATIVE! Outstanding!
comments like this are such a blessing, I'm truly trying to produce good content for people, thank you.
The best modding video I have seen like this. Incredible job man. This is exactly what I was looking for!
Wow! I truly appreciate the kind words, thanks you so much for watching and commenting!
Agreed, just was I was looking for. Clear and systematic. Still relevant 2 years later. Thanks
Smooth style to your vids, CT. Always helpful and informative with a fresh, vibrant feel. You're my Grom source, player. CT Gromer for the win! I'm in.
That's a pretty big compliment! I really appreciate the kind words! The reason I make the videos is to inform, so I'm glad you're enjoying the content :)
Awesome that you took the time. Is was a lot if work. I love my grom.
TOM C I appreciate you watching and commenting!
Been looking for a Channel Exactly like THIS. Thank you Daniel you HAVE SAVED me a LOT of time and Head Scratching. I;m 52 in Wales UK and been Looking into getting my 1st GROM So cheers Bud.
This was a good video!
Super glad I found your channel!
Lovely looking forward to doing it the intake sounds a lot better
I don't even have a Grom and I subbed. Well done, really informative.
Comments like this keep me going, thank you so much for the kind words and the sub!
I just subbed well put together video - you deserve way more subs - regardless keep it up!
Tishawn Fahie thank you so much for the sub and for watching, means the world to me! More subs will come with time I hope!
hey! What do you think of my channel lol, I just bought a grom!
Great work! Thank you for the info. I don’t have a grom yet but if I end up getting one 🤞🏻it’s sure great to have this ammo to back up upgrade decisions. Subbed
I sure appreciate the kind words man, I'm about to do an updated power mods video, stay tuned, more good info there!
Great vid man, i just picked up a Grom today. I had heard a bunch of different suggestions about the exhaust, air intake, and add ons to the ECU but the way you delivered this information was outstanding.
I really appreciate it! Don't buy anything tuner related yet, I'm about to release a video on the cheapest power I've found to date, that will add to an intake and exhaust, stay tuned, and enjoy modding your grom, its the best!
Yoooooo!! I can’t wait!!
Thanks for the quick reply man!
Leave it alone. All those "mods" do is make it run WORSE. Been there - done that.
Thanks very much for the informative video. I think I’ve now made my mind up. After just purchasing a 2018 grom I think I’ll go for chimera intake, yoshi exhaust and a full dyno remap instead of the plug in box. I might as well seen as the business next door is a dyno bike mapper.
Thanks again 👍
Dope video, all around. Good stuff man!
I really appreciate you watching and commenting! Thanks!
Good video. Informative and entertaining. Keep up the good work. 👍
Zach Lee I really appreciate the positive feedback! Pushing for quality! Thanks for watching.
Well presented. Looking forward to more.
Thank you very much, trying to produce content that provides value, very glad you found some.
Damn good video Bro. I’m debating on buying a grom. And this video came handy. You have a new sub. Thanks and take care.
Hey! Got a new subscriber as youve helped make my decision on what to mod after my exhaust install.
Awesome! Thank you so much for the sub, and taking the time to comment, glad you're enjoying the content!
Just bought brand new grom. Love your videos
I really appreciate that Dennis, thank you!
Grate video. Did a good job putting it together.
Pedro Clemente thank you for watching and commenting!
Told my friend we need a grom hope I get to get one thanks for the video
Christian Colon thanks for commenting brother, you DEFINITELY need a Grom in your life! Besides my wife, it’s the best decision I ever made!
Just subbed Brother. Excellent approach to determining the differences, and props to you for doing that reverse engineering and putting your old stuff back on for us. I seriously would not have had the wherewithal to go through that pain in reverse! I ride a black OG like yours up here in the Pacific Northwest. My channel isn't Grom focused, but you sometimes see it make a cameo in my videos. ;) Looking forward to watching what all you get up to on yours so I guess I have some content to watch now. Keep it shiny!
Just subbed right back! I appreciate your kind comment man, just trying to provide quality content! Glad to hear you're grommin too! Hope our channels continue to grow, cheers!
We need more professional videos like this CT! This really will help me improve my 2017 Grom
I just bought a from
I really appreciate the comment, I'll keep them coming!
Yooo thanks for the video I learned so much, I wanna Grom and will have one one day, my buddy owns one and had been modifying his
That's awesome man, have you been helping him mod? If so, it'll be good practice and knowledge for when you get yours! When do you think you'll get one? Thanks for commenting!
Great video comparison of your mods! First of its kind on UA-cam that I've seen! Great job w/ content & narration!
Jason, thank you for the sub and the compliment! Guys like you keep me fired up to produce content, thank you! Do you have a grom?
@@CTGromer As of today, I don't, but I've been eye-balling them for awhile now. I have a friend or two with them...it seems it may only be a matter of time!
@@JasonTurner I promise you wont regret it!
@@CTGromer I picked up a gently used Z125 this week, and I've already put 150 miles on it! you were right on the money!
@@JasonTurner I'm so stoked for you brother! Keep riding it! Any mods on it?
Great video bro exactly where I was T with my grom
Thank you for explaining it!! Most vids just have a unboxing of parts and that usually it.
I'm glad you found value- my goal is to be informative!
Very relevant video. Great job!
I really appreciate the comment! Stay tuned, another is dropping in less than 24 hrs!
Great vid man love your channel, I have a Honda Cb1000r really considering getting a grom now.
That's really awesome to hear! I bet that CB is a hell of a lot of fun. Interestingly, the guy I bought this grom from upgraded to a CB1000.
Great video and comparison sir. Thanks so much !
Glad you enjoyed, thank YOU for taking the time to comment!
Great video, you just got yourself a new sub 🤟🏽

*Thanks 'CT Gromer'. Great review! HONDA Grom ex Honda MSX. The first bike, flat-foot that I felt comfortable riding after my latest TKR (Total knee Replacement) Left Knee 2020. Than was the 5th TKR operation. Four on the Right Knee. Primary TKR failed in 2014 Stockholm, Sweden failed resulting in a almost chronic, deep infection around the implant. 2018-19, finally after a two-stage revision here in Bangkok, Thailand. Thai orthopaedic surgeons are world class. Maybe, because of the many motorcycle accidents! The orthopaedic residents perform a lot of "Nailing & Plating". Anyhow, I never thought that I would own/ride a bike in Bangkok (traffic) Later, I did test a scooter VESPA 300 GTS, automatic, of course. But "swing a leg" I thought that's impossible! Anyhow, the dinky HONDA Grom was the motorbike that changed my mind and I almost bought one. But, then finally I decided to buy a "flat-foot" cruiser, easy rider instead. But that's another story. Here my GROM video. I do like the name far better than MSX ('Mike, Sierra , X-Ray)* ua-cam.com/video/SH3hCvVxf5E/v-deo.html
I'll check your video out! Sounds like its been a crazy journey of surgeries, pain and recovery!

CT Gromer I got only 65 with intake and exhaust 👎🏻 no tucking but still was expecting to go faster 🥴 pcv will arrive tomorrow hopefully it helps
@@Godsslave777 Thats about what I get without a tuck. my runs were all done in a full tuck, good luck with your PCV!
Great post!!!! Get a BBK, you are pretty much already set up for it.. Keep posting those vids. You will see your channel grow!!!
Raul Cano should I do it?! Believe me I’ve thought about it. I appreciate the comment! Thank you for watching
Yes, that PCV will be put to good use. Wouldn’t go over 170cc though.
I love this video! Commenting from The Bahamas
Cheers! Wish I could go tan, and drink umbrella drinks on the beach! Thanks for commenting!
Hey dude! Nice video! Very well done! I like how comprehensive you are with the testing!
Btw are you an engineer?
Hey thanks a lot for commenting! Glad you found value, thank you for watching. No, I'm not an engineer, what makes you think that?
I just ordered a Yoshimura exhaust to go with a short finger intake. I plan on having my ECU flashed by DHM. Maybe I should try riding it before I have my ECU flashed first so I can check my numbers before and after. . Great video!
Definitely ride it and take before and after video so you can calculate the difference! After this video I had DHM do my re-flash and got his cam package as well!
I've been running the chimera and full two bros for a while now with no fuel map. I definitely need to get one after this.
Hey bro, thanks for commenting, I'm a fan of your channel!
I know Im asking randomly but does anyone know of a method to log back into an instagram account??
I was dumb lost my account password. I appreciate any tricks you can offer me.
@Brody Emmitt Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site on google and im trying it out now.
I see it takes a while so I will reply here later with my results.
@Brody Emmitt It worked and I finally got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thanks so much, you saved my ass!
@Bradley Mathias Happy to help xD
You should do a comparison of the DHM ECU and a Finbro ECU w/coldstart with the 150 injector. I would be really interested to see the results in that. Great video bud!
That's not a bad idea! I really appreciate the suggestion! Thanks for commenting!
Great video. Just subscribed
Thank you so much for watching and subscribing, means alot!
Quality content. Subbed
Thank you so much for the compliment and the sub! I'll keep producing good content, keep watching!
Thanks mate, you just saved me 1000aud. The grom i am picking up has a Yoshimura Exhaust, i believe the rest is stock.
That's awesome, as long as you dont modify airbox/intake then you're good. If you ever do, just reflash the ECU, say cheaper than running power commander.
@@CTGromer Cheers!
Nice man!! I have a PC 5 so. To install on my 2012 ltz400.
Sweet! That LTZ400 engine is a good one! Got them same one in my DRZ. Takes a lot of abuse and keeps going!
Really interesting. Cheers :)
Love that air in my ecu
Appreciate the testing since I can comfortably save my money on not getting a power commander unless I go full Gucci grom
U just helped my decisions for mods chimera intake & aftermarket exhaust is all i need for now & retuned
Truly. Anything else is just extra. Best bang for your buck is just those 3! Thanks for watching and commenting!
I am 5’10.5” and 162lbs this is a perfect info video for me.
That's awesome! All those little details should be factors, thats why I include them!
I saw in another video that you can remove your stock ECU and send it out to have it reflashed for $100. That is another option too aside from getting a power commander or similar EJK.
Absolutely correct! I actually reviewed one of the guys who reflashes the ECU's product here: ua-cam.com/video/t7xqQPafvF8/v-deo.html
Thanks for commenting! Turns out it works great, and it's definitely the cheapest fix! Watch that video I linked, it piggy backs on the speed runs from this video you commented on.
I recently purchased a 2020 with 14t, and the mods you spoke of. I switched to a 15t and I never hit recline anymore and top out at around 60. Same height and build as you. I expected more top end but it seems to be same. The gears seam longer
Thanks fam
You're welcome fam, thanks for the comment!
With stock air filter box, you don't have to worry about riding in the rain, or washing with pressure, no worry about any little thing go through the throttle body, and make it more clean last longer.
All those things are true, and definitely in the "pros" column when debating whether or not to change to an after market intake. Unfortunately it's also super restrictive! It sounds like you value reliability over performance, which is fine! Thanks for commenting!
Very informative video! Earned my sub. Thanks for posting. I ride a 2015 Grom in Canada. I moded the air box only (removed the snorkel, restrictor plate and internal tube) I run 89 octane. I consistently get up to 124kph (77mph) and saw 129 once. I ride it pretty hard and would like to get a few better tuned parts such as you show in the video. I've heard of people reflashing the stock computer instead of a power commander or the like. Do you have any experience with that?
Well I very much appreciate you watching and the sub! Thank you. Yes, I do have experience with running a reflashed ECU and recommend it better than PCV because it's much cheaper! I'm actually running one currently on my 2015. DHMotoring does a reflash package for $105, for someone like you that wants to go a little faster on the top end, i'd really recommend the DHM Reflash + CAM package. I did a video on it actually not too long ago, check it out if you want. Best bang for your buck I think, and install was not hard: ua-cam.com/video/t7xqQPafvF8/v-deo.html
Wow seeing the results with the top and speed and 0-55 this convinces me the the intake mod only gets you the best bang for your bucks. Amazon has multiple air intakes from $33 to $149 for the Chimera and you can spend more but all are about 3" induction with filter.
dope aerials
Well appreciate it brother! If you liek those, check out the drone shots in my last DRZ video (skip to 4:05) here: ua-cam.com/video/_5suzR_HKjE/v-deo.html
Thanks 👍👍👍👍👍⚜
You're welcome, thank you for commenting and enjoying the content!
We all like our grom's.Good, fun bikes to play with.Your Video is first class, really well put together. You have my LIKE for sure. After a sports pipe and airbox mods, does the grom run dangerously lean or can I just ride without a fuel tuner ?Or would you recommend an EJK Tuner ? Thanks.
I really appreciate the compliments brother, thank you! I'll keep the content coming! Man, airbox MODS - anything keeping the airbox is a gray area, but you're probably ok with stock ECU. Once you go to a true performance intake such as a Chimera, dingerbuilt or DHmotoring, you'd definitely need some sort of fuel richening. By far the cheapest way to do it is to go to dhmotoring.com and pick up one of his re-flashed ECUs for just over $100.
9:01 The moment when u fly drone in followmode, and get a surprise Maxpass from wristy🏍🤭

Dude your channel is amazing! I’m getting a new Grom in the next week or so.
With your experience do you think the bike is gonna lose power because I live in Aspen Colorado in such high altitude?
Thats awesome man, congrats! The answer is yes, unfortunately you will lose a little performance at over 5,000 ft. I do a lot of riding here in Central CA in the mountains also around 5,000ft and its noticeable. You'll notice that it feels like its got some balls if you ever take it to sea level!
CT Gromer thanks for the reply... I really appreciate!
Very good job bro. Almost 400 bucks for nothing? You just busted the myth of power commander!
It's a somewhat complicated subject, but from a PERFORMANCE standpoint, it would appear the PCV doesnt add anything, just puts a band-aid on your leaned out AFR.
Very informative video, What would you suggest as an alternate for the Power Commander V. "Budget build". I also have a zoom high mount exhaust and K&N intake. I have no plans for a big bore kit. Any thoughts thanks.
Thanks for watching! if you're not doing big bore, I think ecu=shop, tuneboss, apitech or EJK would be adequate--all much cheaper than the PCV. I had a Zoom on my first Grom, great bang for the buck!
Awesome video!! What gas grade were you using? why didnt you take a 3way average with each mod? Also did you shift at the same RPM for each run?
Whats up man? I use 91 Octane. a 3 way average, like do 3 speed runs and average them? Because thats' a lot more work and a lot more editing, but for true consistency I agree with you it would've been better. Shifting yes, I tried to switch at redline each time. Glad you liked the video!
well put video, u just got a subscriber
LOLgarena thank you so much for the sub! I really appreciate you letting me know about those Thai alternatives to the power commander. I’ll check them out!
I keep my stock exhaust and I bought a chimera intake for my 2023 monkey, not really planning to change my exhaust, I also bought a pv3 but most maps are for intake and exhaust
Exhaust + Intake + PCV = Faster & the Grom needs it. Stock it can bare ride 2UP & hills sap it hard. Level 1 tuning brings it to life
I agree. Should be mandatory for a grom. It's a significant increase in power and acceleration for sure! Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@CTGromer Just finishes installing the Chimera intake & PCV. The plastic body panels were the hardest part lol... Messed up one of the screws under the rear fender, stripped the phillips head lol, to the mechanic tomorrow for help removing it. Sounds good. Combo of Zoom full loop exhaust, Chimera Intake & PCV with map tuned for said combo makes a noticeable increase in power, tops speed & overall performance. Cost nearly $900 plus my DIY install time. Glad to make it happen :) More testing tomorrow once it warms up^^ Colder than a snowmans pecker right now & the morning will be colder
Love from Clovis
Heck yeah dude! Thanks a lot, Clovis resident myself! Thanks for watching!
Very constructive 👌
Glad you found value, thank you!
Don’t know what state you are in but the power commanders I have bought have been 49 state models. On both my bikes the CA legal tuners doesn’t nothing below 4K RPM. So you get the power commanders through a 3rd party in calif. Makes a world of difference
I've heard that the PCV I had doesn't intervene until higher RPM just like you've said, I thought all of them were like that! There are some the provide a complete map for all RPMs?
CT Gromer yes the tuners that are available in the 49 states. It was the same for my Ducati monster. And my husqvarna 450 SMR. I also bought the auto tune unit for the husky.
@@CTGromer i would call the mfg on the tuner you want to use. they will or should tell you about the difference in the tuners. california carb standards kill any real gain with the calif spec tuner. i havd mine tuned by a great shop w a dyno, so we could do back to back runs.....
@@grooviefan That's a really good idea. I will investigate further next time I run a PCV. I've since gone to a re-flashed ECU for fuel/air correction. It's more simple, cheaper, and has worked well for me.
The Duc & husky ECU ran out of ability to adjust. Could never get it rich enough in the range we needed. But every mfg ecu is different
A powercommander, bazzaz or any fuel controller doesn't necessarily increase performance. You could even lose a few hp after a tune. They aim is solely to get the air/fuel ratio or mixture right. I'd also recommend getting a custom map for your specific bike. Each bike is different even with the same exact parts on. There's a lot of parameters generic maps doesn't take into account, so a custom map on a dyno is definitely a must.
#sauce - Superbike Solutions
I do agree that a custom map is by far the most effective, but very expensive in combination with a PCV. I think the better solution is to re-flash the ECU.
Between your after markets exhaust. The chimera instake and air filter along with the ecu flashing. How has it effected gas mileage? If much at all? Considering doing these but I love my 100mpg plus
Not too much affect, I've MAYBE lost a little, but I'm still at 100 mpg. It really depends on how I ride it. I did not notice a significant decrease in gas mileage. Thanks for commenting!
Super well done video! What do you think about the lifan 150cc? It's a from clone but I've heard so much good about it, and has 5 gears! Sounds like a possible from killer🧐
It'll be faster than the average grom no doubt, but for how long? I'm a huge fan of japanese engineering. Their craftsman ship and quality parts are why their engines last a long time, that lifan engine wont last half as long.
So if I have an aftermarket exhaust and intake it’s not mandatory to use a dynojet tuner? Great video!
Anthony Glassey Not the power commander five specifically, no. In my opinion it is not a good bargain. Stay tune in the next 72 hours I’m going to drop a video that takes care of all that as well as add power for cheaper!
CT Gromer awesome, I’ll be looking forward to watching the video, thanks for your help!
@@anthonyglassey3200 Don't know if you saw the video I'm talking about, its here: ua-cam.com/video/t7xqQPafvF8/v-deo.html
Yup , I just bought a 23 Grom. I now have the Chimera Intake and Vance & Hines exhaust. It did wake up some . Not saticfied with the very small gain . I just want this thing to handle head winds and maintain 45-55 MPH on small grade hills. I guess some kind of tuner and maybe a cam upgrade . Who knows ? Trial by parts .
Have any luck?
Would have been interesting to see the bike with a standard exhaust run b4 you put the new one on
I actually do a stock grom speed run in this video if you're interested: ua-cam.com/video/tn8uK82MCAM/v-deo.html
Think I’ll still get the power v. Definitely getting the chimera air intake now. Need to drop 20 lbs to get back to 165. Can you add the carbon fiber wheels next?
shoei07 it’s still a great air fuel management unit! I love mine. And it gives you piece of mind your not running too lean, enjoy!
Very nice bro MsX c 125
Appreciate it! Thanks for commenting!
I like you ❤️❤️
Thanks....
You're welcome!
chi·me·ra | \ kī-ˈmir-ə ....not "chee", but chi is pronounced like "kye".
I didn't see any other comments mentioning it.
Otherwise, nicely done video. A good logical analysis and testing.
If I had a dollar for every time I've been told this in comments! I appreciate it though, I have since learned the correct pronunciation. Thank you for the compliment, glad you enjoyed the content!
CT Gromer I tried looking to see if anyone else mentioned it; figured you may have been bombarded with it already. Lol.
Damn! I coulda sworn this was a Fooligan video from that intro
Lol! I'll take that as a compliment I guess! We have both sense changed our intros though!
Subbed! Question: Do you think these changes would pass-over to other 125cc bikes?
The concepts are the same yes, the specific parts wont fit, but if its a street legal 125cc bike, you can get more power out of it by letting in breath better with intake and aftermarket exhaust and richening the AFR. Thanks for commenting!
@@CTGromer Am I right in thinking that most 125cc bikes will be okay with a new exhaust and air filter without adjusting the fuel mixture? Just referring to what you tested in the video, and basically, I'm trying to avoid ECU remapping/flashing
What about the Free Intake mod with exhaust, maybe the yoshimura ? (I only removed the 2 snorkel’s) Is the Powercommander necessary?
I'd say you're fine without it!
One thing I found with my 2020 is I have never hit rev limiter in fourth so today I’m dropping the front gear one tooth.
Getting limiter in 4th is hard to do, you need a light weight rider and some engine mods.
Great video...man I just got the chimera intake and dhm stage 1 ecu flash. Already had the yoshi rs2 exhaust. My top end only went up to 57mph from 56 mph. I'm about 235. Does this sound right?
Nice 👍 ! How far have you ridden it, and did you reset the ECU when you got it? If you didn't ride it at least 50 miles and the ECU will make the adjustment.
What about going from fully stock to adding an exhaust?? How many mph would you gain?
Makes me wonder how fast mine would go at sea level.
Thanks for commenting! Altitude definitely a factor in correctly tuning for maximum power-- what altitude are you riding at?
@@CTGromer SE Arizona. Anywhere from 4500' to 6500'. Mine has a BBK and associated mods, but 60 is about tops (haven't changed the sproket yet) but I'm a big guy.
@@wraith67 Thats definitely a factor. I do a lot of trails on a DRZ400 between 5,000-6,000 here in CA. The DRZ can pick up the front tire in 3rd no problem at sea level but takes the same amount of effort to get it up in 2nd gear at that altitude.
I just copped a from
They fly, I'm from Boston Mass and it definitely is peppier than alot of groms I see on YT thay are further inland
Nice work..... I’m currently under going mods on my 2020 Grom abs and I’m not sure which to get .... dynojet or ejk because I plan to put a big bore and cam...... any suggestions
I definitely have suggestions, the cheapest way to go if you're going to keep the bike stock bore is to just-reflash the ECU! Best bang for your buck. Check out DHM. Good luck!
What are some of the other tuner options and how do you know which one to get? And where do you find them? Amazon? I just recently got a grom and was thinking about purchasing those upgrades but I don’t want to buy the power commander. Thanks!
There aren't to many options out there that are cheaper than the PCV, but I've heard great things about the EJK (part number EJK 8110049) for the Grom. At only $225 its by far the cheapest. You can get them on Amazon, good luck!
Check the comment from @LOLGarena - they just listed some cheap Thailand alternatives to the power commander, check them out!
I've watched 4 videos so far, I'm glad to say I am your 3110th sub hahahahaha
I appreciate the sub, thank you!
CT Gromer you’re good dude, trust
