This was very helpful. Thank you. I have a very wide nail bed. Too wide for my tastes. I always end up digging into the sides in an attempt to make my nail bed look more narrow, but now I know I can achieve a more elongated look without doing that. ❤
You’re not supposed to file the side wall because it keeps it sealed? Can someone explain? I always file that to make an almond shape but maybe I shouldn’t do that?
i file the side walls of some of my dominant nails, cos when they hit things they start splitting from the sidewalls, so i remove them so there's nothing there to hit, every time i forget... splits.
Hi there, love this little nail nugget! I have already destroyed the sidewall on my natural nails, is there a way to repair it or get it back to that lovely hem!? I watch and love all your videos but I haven't seen one with you working with nails like mine. I have small, stubby nails and my nailbed is narrow at the bottom but goes wide as it goes up to the top of my nail with my skin growing up around my nails, usually hindering nail growth. ANY suggestions??
Thank you! I learned this when I read my nail school text book and I'm always worried about being judged for not only going one way even though the nails turn out just fine. Although, I remember the able at which you file being a factor?
i go everyway when shortening the length which requires speed, then i go one way during the shapping part... it's not even on purpose that's just how my brain works, i feel most people do that too. it's probably the grit ruining everyones nails as you said, because most stores don#t even have the label to say what the grit rating is.
I have a thumb nail that continually splits in the same place, it’s so bad I have to wear builder gel on it or i could fully split my nail😭 how do I stop this? I’m trying to use more cuticle oil
Yes! Bring back natural nails please! My technician recommended the same, I have a stainless steel nail file that I use on the sides for dry skin like that and some other great products from South Africa
Can you do another E-file video? Testing Amazon E-files like cordless ones, top rated, affordable 😊 please and Thank you! What drill do you recommend for a beginner nail tech?
Everywhere I've looked, says to file in one direction. But, I always see both directions being filed. Does it mean file inward toward the center on both sides? I hope that makes sense and someone can help me out. I'm so confused. Haha
That’s what I do. As long as you don’t drag the file back and forth I think it’s fine. Doing that will ruin your nails. But I find going from out to the center on my nails keep the edges looking better
It’s actually a myth that you can’t file in both directions. Doug Shoon has a video explaining that overall it makes no difference. He has looked at this under a microscope. Obviously there may be exceptions.
@@nicolanewman9308 yeah, you can file in two directions, proved by the study you’re referring to. The discovery also concluded that the only thing that matters is the coarseness of the file. The finer the healthier for the nail.
More great basics that we need to know but didn't realize we did. THANK YOU SUZY THANK YOU! Things that just make sense and made doable because of you . Thank u
OMG, I have a habit of absolutely attacking my sidewalls to get the shape I like. I hadn't thought about it acting as a hem for the whole nail. It totally explains why my nails tend to fray. D8
this whole time i’ve been going down the side walls. thank you! i’m trying to learn how to correctly file my natural nails and clean them up since they grow out pretty long but it’s always one side lopsided 😭
So: thoughts about styling when one finger joint was nipped off by a dog? Do I stay nude/low contrast with the others, or fuck it? I don’t want people thinking I’m drawing attention to get sympathy
I wouldn't worry about it. Whatever you think looks nice and will make you smile when you look down at your hands. If you don't make a big deal about it, most other people won't either.
Alot of nail techs don't know THIS! its nail 101 its sad..alot of times they hurt my toes or finger nails with such harshness omggg i tell him stop it hurts..you're using the wrong file...
It's like going back to school...a good reminder when we r in a hurry. But a glass file on natural nails is best it seals them, what do u think? Thanks for this.
I have a question, how can I file my natural nails into a more pointed shape when they grow out without chewing into the side walls like she was talking about?
I needed this for my chewed up boy nails lol. Wearing polish helps me not bite and I’ll actually end up growing nails. My hardest part is knowing how to shape my natural nail
I love Bob Ross the painter, his voice is sooooo soothing maan! Obsessed Bob is the man! Essie basecoat "Here to Stay " and Essie "No chips " topcoats have saved my long bendy nails, with Essie I now have very strong nails! 11 days and not one torn or broken nail! And my nails very long! Yes, Hallelujah! ⚽️🥇🎊! Gels polish on my toes now! Gels peel and chip too much! Essie Second Shine topcoat is very thin, hardly any lifting! UK 🇬🇧
I’ve always had this habit of wanting to file down the sides of my nails to make them look longer instead of just.. letting them grow longer. Thank you so much for this, I think it was the wakeup call I needed to stop messing with my nails so much.
That’s one thing they always do at the nail salon is file down the side of your nail bed. It drives me nuts because I instantly know there goes the integrity of my nail! They do soo many things that keep your nails unhealthy so you have to keep coming back ✨😡✨ Thank goodness for your light at the end of the nail table ✨
I really want to learn how to work on nails properly but i don’t know how can i deal with the sound of failing wither its mechanical or by hand … I mean sensory wise how can I deal with that awful sound ?
Personally, I’ve found that filing the edges have made my nails last longer. My nails aren’t the strongest and always tear at the edges from the littlest of things. So, when I file them, any part that might be starting to break gets filed away and my nail can keep on growing.
😭 I went to get my first mani. I told the girl I wanted to keep the length. She filed my natural nail with a 80/100 and she kept moving the file to both sides. It was so gritty my ears were hurting 😭 and she used the same file to buff the top of the nail. My nails are now so thin that they bend like paper. My natural nails broke in less than 3 days. 😭😭
For a tip from someone who maintains long nails, coarse grit is generally to remove nail/ shorten it. Medium does that as well but also helps transition to smooth tips once you go to the fine and then polish grits. Or at least that's how i use them.
Her voice is like Bob Ross for nail tutorials, love it😊
She’s about to tell us about all the ‘happy little cuticles’

I am the exact same! Wish there were more videos on how to file and shape wide nails
my thumbs are so wide!! but now i will stick to just cleaning up the corner
How though? The nail in the video looks just as wide as it did before the filing (in my opinion!)
Pinching mine helped SO MUCH!
You've got me out here feeling like I commit nail brutality to my poor hands! 🤣
You’re not supposed to file the side wall because it keeps it sealed? Can someone explain? I always file that to make an almond shape but maybe I shouldn’t do that?
I read it can also weaken the nail

Thank you for emphasizing the "one way". For my mails, this is key!
The walls of my nail are always ripping if I don't file them away 😅
Fun fact: it's been debunked that going one way is the proper way. Turns out, it doesn't matter.
The grit however, does.
Thank you! I learned this when I read my nail school text book and I'm always worried about being judged for not only going one way even though the nails turn out just fine. Although, I remember the able at which you file being a factor?

What is fine in terms of grit?
They are usually 240

I like using a glass file. Do you recommend?
How do you feel about glass nail files?
I loveeee glass nail files
I hate those!! It's not a problem with the file itself, it just makes me ick, the sensation and/or sound triggers me
All these nail videos i know absolutely nothing about beauty and pedi/manis.....
You should organize a beginners playlist. From what tools to have & where to start etc etc. I would buy that!
But the wall looks like square why not shape it a little?

Thank you!! 👏🏻 I wish my nail tech would do this every time she files my natural nails!
My problem is I'm too impatient to go one way..that's why my nails are flimsy now lol
Try filling at a 45 degree angle and just making sure the last few strokes are all in the same direction. I hope that helps!
this whole time i’ve been going down the side walls. thank you! i’m trying to learn how to correctly file my natural nails and clean them up since they grow out pretty long but it’s always one side lopsided 😭
Please tilt the file properly. Else, you'll make it catch on stuff
Love this, more natural nail tips please 🥰
I did everything she told me not to do 😅
Very helpful but I’m watching this right after I finished filing and I did basically everything u said not to do 💀 😭
It’s ok - this is how we learn

What can you do when you acidentally filed up the base of your nail? (like the big transparent part)
I USED A COARSE AND NOW MY FINGERNAILS HURT SO BAD😭😭😭 HELP MEEEE
I can’t do this, it leaves tiny nail fringes. I need it to be smooth
The trick is the type of file - it much be a fine grit
I have a question, how can I file my natural nails into a more pointed shape when they grow out without chewing into the side walls like she was talking about?
I am manifesting beautiful natural nails
Do not you fine nail files they may be good but glass nail files are 1,000% begter
Bardzo pomocne tylko mało taki h porad A szkoda😢😢😢
Problem is, my nails tend to flare are the tips, so if i don't file the side walls they would look very weird!
I really needed to see this especially for today ❤
This is common sense. If you use a course nail file and your nail looks ragged, of course you’re going to use a finer grit if you have one.
what nail files are those? do you have an amazon link by chance?
Tenía entendido que se lima del medio hacia afuera y no al revés.
as a former harpist i cannot stress how important rounding out those corners are
How do I ask you a question with pictures?
I use a glass nail file. Never gone back. Smoothest and strongest edge ever.
Do you have a suggestion for one?
I needed this for my chewed up boy nails lol. Wearing polish helps me not bite and I’ll actually end up growing nails. My hardest part is knowing how to shape my natural nail

What file to use to get the shine off of gel nail polish on natural nails before soaking them off?
