  • In this video I will walk you through my hardware live set up for playing improvisational electronic music. I love to play techno on this setup, but it will work for lots of other styles. I will show you how I use the Elektron Digitakt, Octatrack, Digitone, Analog Heat, 1010 Music Blackbox, and Strymon Bigsky to play techno live.

    Really interesting to compare this live setup to the livestream you did with EZBot this month, how the OXI gear has worked in, but the theoretical side is still fundamentally the same. Will forever be tipping the hat on that high-pass/resonance boost tip on the kick. Great stuff.

    This is amazing! Excellent content! I’ve already got 5 out of the 7 pieces of gear you’ve got here … so I’m heading in the right direction.. this is my goal spot on! Performing live gigs with spontaneous and improvised creation of sound. I’m a visual artist firstly - this is my second love - making sounds! Thanks so much and I’m so excited to have found this YT from the Elektron group over on Facebook. Thanks so much I’ve added your IG.
      I’m an old school punk now past the half century and wanting to return to music again to create live performances alongside my arts practice … my sound direction would be akin to Trent Reznor / NIN / Prodigy / sound scapes that still utilise guitar alongside the sequences. Just need a foot switch pedal to change up the sequences etc.

    Thank you very much for your insight and explanation Eric. This will help me al lot to set up and route my Elektron and Roland Boutique gear. I have to make choices though to bring back my set-up, but it's difficult to not include my TB-03, SE-02, SH-01A, JU-06A or JX-08 (I can't choose which one to let aside). In my case I am thinking of putting the AR mk2 and A4 mk2 on the left side (drum, percussion and bassline) and DN with maybe two Boutiques on the right side (lead, arp and pads) before going into the OT and AH. Creating loops beforehand (with the gear I will exclude on my live setup) and play them via one or two tracks of the Octatrack (in my case) for the liveset is a great solution, but with these machines it's already a big setup. Ofcourse it's a start to practise what works best.

    • @SURCOlive
      @SURCOlive  2 роки тому

      Sounds like a great rig no matter how you go. On thing to consider is that the Analog 4 and the Digitone each have 4 unique voices each. This meant at with just those two you have effectively 8 synth tracks for bass, leads, arps, plucks, stabs, etc. You would just be missing something polyphonic (depending on the type of music you are making), so the JU-06a might fill that space. I don't need much in the way of chords or pads in my music, so pad samples work for me. I know its hard to chose for sure. I leave my A4 and AR at home because they are far less portable than the DT and DN. I also leave my SH01a, Minitaur, TB03, and others because they really only do one monophonic voice each. I love that there is so many options for us all to dial in exactly what we love. Thanks so much for watching!

      @@SURCOlive Thanks for your reply! So as I read you already made the same though decicions to decimate a proportion of your gear for a workable liveset. I am just 2,5 years ahead and just 1 year with Elektron gear after started with only a MC-707 in late 2019 (which I sold to justify the OT mk2). So things got really out of hand and in a short time. They have a name for that. 😇Let's say people like you and others in this community inspired me. Now it's time to invest no more money, but a lot of time to learn all ins and outs of mainly the Elektrons. 😅 I still have an eye on the DT, but my AR mk2 should take care of that. 😅 Thanks and please keep inspiring and helping the community. Hopefully I can add to that in the future when I am more experienced and also have some video editing skills.

    Thanks for the dive. The Heat "without that resonant boost" @30:45 min to @31:15 min mark didn't translate during the demo, as there was no change in the sound, if you ask me. So the "Big Key to the Sound" didn't come across. :-)

    • @SURCOlive
      @SURCOlive  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for the feedback. In order to hear the difference you’ll need to listen on something (headphones or monitors) which have a frequency response low enough to pick up the sound. All of the boost is happening between 30Hz and 50Hz (mostly around 40Hz). I just listened back to the video on my monitors and the change is definitely there. This lack of low end frequency response in a lot of monitors can make it really difficult to dial in the bottom end. Not so important for casual listening but vital on a club sound system. I hope you are able to check it out as it is truly a key component to my live sound. You’ve given me the idea to do a video on this topic. Thank you! Thanks again for the feedback and thanks so much for watching!!!

    • @SURCOlive
      @SURCOlive  2 роки тому +1

      Yes I do! Well, sort of. Who the loop is playing the effect is muting the output of the individual tracks. When is not muted is the record buffers that are listening to those tracks. By 'cueing' the record buffer you can hear what is playing without having it turned up in the mix. To cue the drums, it is one buffer and the melodics are another. Cue plus that record button sends that signal to the cue output where I have my headphones plugged in. I hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching!!

    Hey Surco, love your videos! Keep up the good work. Just some questions. I have a similar setup and getting ready for some live gigs using it. Do you have the Octa as midi master? in your video you said (while the looper was playing) you can switch (or load) a whole new set of patterns while pointing to the Digitone, thats where I struggle. I have my Octa as a midi clock and when I try to load a new song on my Digitone or Digitakt it stops the sequence on these machines (while the octa keeps on running, as it should), and in order to get them back into the rythem of the tune is to "earball" the and hit playbuttons on the sequencer of those machines (tone and takt), and that sounds horrible when I bring back the live signal if I screwed up the timings. Any tips? I was about to buy a E-RM multi clock, but I dont really want to spend the money on sth like that :) Thanks!

    • @SURCOlive
      @SURCOlive  Рік тому +1

      Hey! Glad you are digging the videos. If you make sure that the midi settings on your machines are correct, this shouldn't be an issue. I use it the same way with no issues. Set the Octa to send clock, Transport, and Program Change (Program Change only if you are controlling that from the Octa. I don't). Set the Digi machines to receive those. Also, double check that the Inputs and outputs are set to MIDI and not USB. Once it is set like this, the Digi machines will stay in sync even when changing patterns and projects. You won't need to stop them, but if you do, they will start in time. I don't ever stop my machines playing live, but theoretically could. THanks for watching! I hope this helps.

      @SURCOlive  Рік тому

      You could for sure, but my goal from the start was to do this without a computer. There are a number of other hardware samplers you could use as well. The Octatrack is good with samples but in my setup it is doing other things. Thanks for watching!

      And what would you suggest besides 1010

    • @SURCOlive

      The Blackbox was my top choice after testing a bunch. Other good options for samples are SP404, MPC, deluge, or even the Digitakt. It all depends on what type of samples. If you will use one shots like drum samples or synth stabs, there are more options. If you need it to time stretch longer samples and pitch shift make sure your choice does that well. For those things the Blackbox was the best I’ve found especially considering the size and weight. I hope this helps.

      @@SonicVibe it is a recent addition. I didn’t think it could possible be worth the money to just ‘make things sound better’. I was so wrong! It is live sound mastering voodoo magic. It’s crazy how it makes everything sound better. I go into how I use it in this video, but I will do more on it for sure. Thanks again for watching!

    I don't like this video... because I am still waiting to be able to purchase my Octatrack Mk2 to replace the Boss RC505MK2 that just died on me. Octatrack is where I should have put my money in the first place. 😞 Really Phenomenal sounds BTW!

      THanks! You will love the Octatrack (after a frustrating first couple of weeks ;) ). It is an amazing piece of kit that can be a lot of different things for different people. Just don't try to learn it all at once. Learn how to do the things you want to do first, then dig in piece by piece. Thanks so much for watching!

    • @SURCOlive
      @SURCOlive  Рік тому +1

      @@earnestgildon2704 No difference at all. They only made 350 of them, so people snagged them as keepsakes of the 10 year anniversary of the brand. The all black version is exactly the same, only a bit less of a collector's item. The gray and even the MK1 are all great gear. MK2's on Reverb are going for $900 to $1200, but the anniversary editions are starting at $2400. Just because they were a limited run.

    to be honest this setup is bs - too much redundancy. If you're good with octa, then all that you can do with this, you can do with octa alone (with RK-002 cable). Combine octa with a multitimb synth, such as virus, and possibilities are endless. This setup is for GASers who instead of putting in work, look for reasons to buy another box.
