I'd love to see you take on a real monster of FM synthesis - the Yamaha SY77. Amazingly sophisticated machine that I have a love/hate relationship with. All the power of six operator FM combined with a Korg M1 like sample based synthesis section. The downsides (apart from the usual FM difficulties) are the less than intuitive interface and bizarre audio routing.
I had an SY85 briefly before I got my SY77. I like using the AWM synthesis that the two machines have in common as a "virtual analogue synth", starting off with one of the simple waveforms and then filtering it.

The Keys version is one of the best things EVER! Just had to say that. It's paired with my Waldorf M, and the four part MIDI is perfect. Being able to record chords to steps with actual keys is nice too.
Hah, I SO wanted one of those (MODX) when it came out. Played with it in the music store, and once it was stuck in some “mode” I could not figure out how to escape, despite having over 3 decades experience programming computers 😁 It’s a shame, the MODX/Montage sounds great, but it’s just too complicated. I ended up (eventually) getting a “Nautilus”. More expensive, but I got along with the control layout and key feel much better. Sure, it’s a similar level of complexity inside, but Korg did a great job of letting you wade into it, instead of throwing you in to drown. And Nautilus has a filter on its FM engine, too.
@@gautrstafr yeah, I wonder how much gear is “bad” or “good”, and how much is “workflow did, or did not, make sense to *me*” In my case, the first time I got to try the new keyboard, it was almost an hour noodling around with it (“I should go, but this is really fun”), so I kinda knew which one I was going to get a month or two later, vs merely a “meh.” feeling about it. Yamaha sounds great, though, enjoy!
@@Roboprogs yeah totally agree. On one hand Elektron machines are kinda counterintuitive to me. Got my hands on one for a day and got no where. This one... this one hurt 😿 My Digitone is my main synth. I paused on the Hate screen and read them all as a tear rolled down my cheek. But we only roast the ones we love, right? (jk jk, great video as always!)
*gasps* How could you?! Just kidding, I enjoyed the video But you seem to be able to make any gear (even bad gear) sound good. I haven't purchased any Elektron boxes yet because the workflow is a huge commitment that I'm not ready for.
I have a Digitone paired with the Pioneer DJS 1000 and absolutely love them together. Sure, as you drilled down on in the video, the Elektron "Workflow" is a learning curve. However, once you get used to it there is a quite a uniquely powerful little synth in there.
As always, perfectly on the spot. I think you're rocht, every FM synth should be accompanied by an samplebased synth or at least an analogish type. And now - let's squeeze the dirty tones out of FM! (pressing random knobs on the dx7 with a hammer)
@@sparabo3780 I just had a great idea, have you ever seen the Twisted Electrons Mega FM? How about something like that but DX7 instead? Having those sliders for every operator would be amazing

Now do the Yamaha MODX/Montage with the FM-X engine. It truly is the best FM synth out there.
Great suggestion, thanks!
Hah, I SO wanted one of those (MODX) when it came out. Played with it in the music store, and once it was stuck in some “mode” I could not figure out how to escape, despite having over 3 decades experience programming computers 😁
It’s a shame, the MODX/Montage sounds great, but it’s just too complicated.
@@Roboprogs I actually found it the other way, it was just very intuitive to me compared to the Kronos and the Fantom.
@@gautrstafr yeah, I wonder how much gear is “bad” or “good”, and how much is “workflow did, or did not, make sense to *me*”
In my case, the first time I got to try the new keyboard, it was almost an hour noodling around with it (“I should go, but this is really fun”), so I kinda knew which one I was going to get a month or two later, vs merely a “meh.” feeling about it.
Yamaha sounds great, though, enjoy!
@@Roboprogs yeah totally agree. On one hand Elektron machines are kinda counterintuitive to me. Got my hands on one for a day and got no where. In contrast the Korg Volca Sample was pretty limited but got me wasting hours for a whole week. Like you said, depending on your self some things just click, some just don't.
Absolutely superb as always! 👍
Thank you!
This one... this one hurt 😿 My Digitone is my main synth. I paused on the Hate screen and read them all as a tear rolled down my cheek. But we only roast the ones we love, right? (jk jk, great video as always!)
Thank you, true that!
😂😂😂
Looking forward to a review of the Syntakt in 4 years time 😅
Great fun review as always 👍
Thank you!!!
*gasps* How could you?!
Just kidding, I enjoyed the video
But you seem to be able to make any gear (even bad gear) sound good.
I haven't purchased any Elektron boxes yet because the workflow is a huge commitment that I'm not ready for.
Thank you!!! Yeah, Elektron really wants your soul;)
Wise of you to realize that, it is hard to learn
Fantastique, encore une autre review de qualité mek 🖤💚❤️ can't wait to see the DX200 one 🙏🏾🙏🏾 bisous
Merci!!!
This one is a techno beast... or eno esque ambient.. pair it with a drum machine and youre set.
👍
I have a Digitone paired with the Pioneer DJS 1000 and absolutely love them together. Sure, as you drilled down on in the video, the Elektron "Workflow" is a learning curve. However, once you get used to it there is a quite a uniquely powerful little synth in there.
Nice setup!!!
As always, perfectly on the spot. I think you're rocht, every FM synth should be accompanied by an samplebased synth or at least an analogish type.
And now - let's squeeze the dirty tones out of FM! (pressing random knobs on the dx7 with a hammer)
Thanks! There's quite a lot of dirt in the ole DX7...
Wait, there are no knobs on a DX7!
@@ncapone87 Damn, what did i do? 🥹
@@sparabo3780 I just had a great idea, have you ever seen the Twisted Electrons Mega FM? How about something like that but DX7 instead? Having those sliders for every operator would be amazing
Great episode as always.
If I had to choose one fm synth, I would take the MegaFm.
Such a great character-full sound.
Especially for video game soundtracks (because of the 2 Sega mega drive chips) a no brainer
Thank you so much!
bottom line for me is simply, that it sounds gorgeous.
I liked it quite a bit...
