This is exactly how I'm setting up my whole workflow. 100% improvised. For me it's because I just can't get my brain to come back to the same thought after a session. I can't stand the idea of building up a "playlist" for a set. That sounds like torture to me. Major executive dysfunction stuff. But I love just learning the tricks of the tools to just tweak stuff on the fly. It's so much more satisfying to me. Love this vid!

This is the best video on youtube for live performances.
    This got me soo inspired.
This acctually made me sell my oxi one and a couple of synths to get a rytm, faderfox pc12 and a torso, going to pair it with a tb3 and a tr8s. And somehow include koala sampler since the rytm is class compliant... Not sure it will work but fingers crossed.

@LiamKillen Yeah... Keep doing these setup vids with guests. So informative and fascinating. There are tons and tons of channels just doing reviews on single gear.
I mean dawless is basicly building a live instrument as a whole. The whole chain is what makes the instrument and workflow. Keep up the good work and thank you for this. This setup is awesome with handson controll of all parameters you want. Love how this opens up the rytm ...i mean it completely unlocks it and it becomes a true live instrument.

Best setup I’ve seen on yet channel. It’s just super proficient, hands on, simple, and badass and you can use any sequencer you want if you don’t want to use the torso. You can even add another external synth like a Norand Mono Mk2. Hard to beat.

Thqnk you! Loved to see such a competent video diving into detail on this subject and I like the elektron/non elektron approach! I have a similar setup and focus on improvisation, but using an MPC live together with some semi modulars instead. With some practice you can make some surprisingly decent improvised live sets. Especially after realising the q-link knobs can be mapped to do basixally anything!
For those of you who are interested in doing improvised techno: make it enjoyable for yourself, make it easy. Less is more.
Don't fall into the trap of thinking more stnths equals more potential. It is true, but it also means more distractions and less focus.
Your feelings behind the knobs will be translated to the crowd whatever they may be.

This video was great. I love to hear about finding spots in the room and how you can manipulate the energy of the crowd with sound and also ways to make DJ/Techo performance more hands-on. The way he controls each aspect of the sounds calls for Roland or someone like that to make a better device! I'll try to do a lot of what he said with the mappable encoders on the MC-707 and see how far I get.

I'm using the Faderfox PC4 to control effects and params in the whole setup but after seeing this I kind of want even more knobs haha. Protip: I opted to set my kick on channel 16 in the Torso, so that I can easily mute it with one hand, while using the other to turn knobs.

Love love looove this interview and this gear breakdown! I’m a guitarist and it’s so easy to jam on a few chords or melodies, and if I hear a new note, I just grab it on the neck. Been expanding my synth setup recently and learning how to devise a jam in the same way has been tricky, so this is mega insightful. Thanks for sharing this discussion. I got a lot of great info from this. "Its more about more feelibg than more sound." Perfect advice.
Great to see Faderfox pc12 in live jamming. I love mine and highly recommend it. I use it with bitwig and voltage modular 2, and tend towards more ambient and berlin svhool, but many principles of the set-up are identical. Since i do.not use hardware synths, I use the faderfox for the synths, arps and drum sounds, and an akai midiMix for the drum pattern control.

Improvised performance is a funny thing. I think ppl think it means to create new ideas on the spot. It’s not really true… at least in live traditional music (blue, jazz, rock). It’s more about substituting in things you know work at the right time. This actually blew my mind years ago when I read it in an interview and learned it to be true… and it really helped me sound better when I hit the stage as I was much more confident in what I was performing. Of course you can do what you want… but thought I’d mention it in case it helps someone.

Anyone knows what's being mapped next to volume knob for the synths? For the bassline it's the modulation between the 2 vco's, but what's it for the other synth layers?

Alright, I’m scratching my head regarding the controls for the open and closed hihats… 😅 to be able to control the common parameters (decay, tuning etc.) for both at the same time, I imagine that the voices are set to the same midi channel ? But then how do you separate the volume controls of both between 2 knobs ? Am I missing something obvious maybe ? Awesome video and setup !

Here’s the answer for anyone wondering, from Pat:
“Hey man! Really good question because that is the trickiest part of my setup. I had to map the controls that I wanted to share a knob to a performance macro and the midi controller is mapped to the macro. This is a fairly specific work around for the Rytm in particular. If you don’t have a Rytm then you could look into midi controllers that send more than one midi message like the yaeltek stuff. But yeah the CHH and OHH have to be on different midi channels if you want to send them separate sequences and have separate volume control.”

He's in good company using the Torso T-1 to drive a set like this. Anthony Childs (AKA Surgeon) too. Declarative Techno is a great way to go for generating material, leaves the performer to concentrate on sound sculpting, arrangement, mixing, effects and transitions. It's a bit more like being a conductor than having to take care of every little detail. Neat idea using the Mod Dwarf for mastering chain. There aren't too many standalone devices to do that, if you don't want to either bring a laptop, or spend really quite a lot on the DOCtron Stimming Instant Mastering Chain. Idk, maybe the newer Analog Heat mk.II can also be useful for that, compared to the Analog Heat mk.I?
