Amazingly simple method used to coax a swarm of bees in the air to land.

Well folks, for the second time in two weeks, due to my extremely busy life at this particular time, I have once again resorted to reediting an old video and posting the new version of it as my weekly post. And, just like last weeks post, this reedited video has for it's subject matter swarms. The particulars of this swarm catch are as follows. There was a huge swarm of bees about 40 feet up a pine tree, and yes, I'm pretty sure they were from one of our hives that were very near the tree. Because they were so high, my bucket pole was not long enough to reach them so I stood in the bucket of the tractor and was lifted nearer the swarm where I could reach it. My attempt to catch the swarm in my bucket was pitiful, and I got only a portion of the swarm, and by the time I had gotten to the ground to dump the bees in my box which had old brood comb and lemon grass oil in it already, most of the ones in the bucket had flown out. Still, I managed to get a hundred or so of the bees into the bee box that was on the ground already, but the queen was not one of them. How do I know that? Because at the same time I got to the ground with my bucket, the swarm took to the air and was moving away from me at a pretty good clip. And as we all know, the swarm moves with the queen, and as the swarm was moving away, she was not in the box. At that point that's when I reached for the crowbar and started hitting it with my hive tool. The method is called "tanging," and though on this video I used a crowbar and a hive tool, one could use any metal on metal to produce the sound that will work. Normally, I use a cow bell that I carry with me on most swarm calls, but because I did not have it, I improvised with what was at hand. I have used this method a dozen times over the years, sometimes successfully and others not, but because I usually don't have my camera with me, I never got to video it. I just happened to have it with me that day, but not my cow bell.
With things slowing down a bit now, I will be posting a brand new video next Friday so get ready for some real time bee wrangling. God's peace to all.

Needs more cowbell. Sharp and loud noises is thought to simulate thunder. Bees can and do fly in the rain. However, they don't like to mess with a thunder storm. I used this method a couple of years ago in my own yard. Worked well. I did more random and spread out patterns. Cowbell. I think I will add one to my vehicle when I roll with swarm gear.
Meds more cowbell. Great SNL episode.

Jeff, I have been doing exactly this and telling peeps about it for at least 50 years, although I use two bee tools generally and 80% of the time it works, as soon as I see bees congregating at the entrance of a hive acting like a swarm I set up and rarely miss a swarm.
Hot thang! Who would have ever thought you could catch a swarm with a crowbar. Great job Jeff.
Mr. Ed, that was really crazy to watch and I really don't know how your going to follow that video with a better one. You are so fun to watch and I always learn something from the videos. Blessings to you and all of the Abbey Honey Bees. 🥰

It's not just the fear of rain, it's losing her sent in the rain so they need to land. This is what I was told by my grandfather.
"Scent"!
this video had a lot of bee sound in it, it was great. It's also the first time I have heard about tanging. Nice method.
Tanging really does work, unfortunately not every time, Still, when it does work it is quite amazing. Thanks for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
That was so cool to see. Have a Blessed Day Jeff and your Crew.
Beautiful! The theory behind it, from what I've heard, is the bees think it's thunder which mains rain, so they try to get out of the air asap. Whatever the reason, it works.
In reality it mimics the workers piping swarm call.

A customer told me they used to bang on a cast iron pan to get a swarm to come down, and then I see this video. Crazy! Maybe I won't lose any swarms this year. I watched several fly away last year. I've got a crowbar, cast iron pans, and hive tools. I should be set if any get past me. Thanks for the video! I hope I don't need it for my bees. Maybe I'll catch a swarm from my runaways last year.
The crowbar is all I had at the time, I normally use a cow bell and it does a great job. Of course, it is not a 100% guarantee the swarm will land, but when they do, it is just so cool! We released her and it was beautiful watching her swim away. Big ones are getting rare nowadays, so gotta let them go to make babies if we want them to come back.
Mr. Ed, That's a C chord. I've watched a video this past week and bees are attracted to the chord of C. This was very interesting due to they create the same C sound with their wings. WOW!!!!!!
Now that's news to me, I had never heard that the "C" cord was the pitch created with their wings. I am going to investigate that one. Thanks for bringing it to my attention as well as for watching this older video. Until the next one, God's peace Jennifer.
Mr. Ed
@@JeffHorchoff Hi Jennifer, If you have a tuned piano, the wing sound from many honeybees sound like a mid C chord to a low C chord sound on the piano in the key of C. From what I understand is that vets with PTSD and civilians can use the humming sound of the honeybee wings in the chord of C. Supposedly, it's suppose to heal those with PTSD.

@@ojibwemamastevens768 some are from my own apiary but I have tanged maybe two feral swarms, my swarms have all gone back into their own hive the wild feral swarms have gone back to the tree branch they originally swarmed to it is a amazing spectacle too see, you know I’ve never noticed how long it took them to go back maybe five or ten minutes oh and I used my hive tool banging on a old metal bucket, I can honestly say I don’t know the science behind tanging people say it mimics thunder so the bees think it’s going to rain but I am definitely a firm believer in this trick because it’s worked for me. Good call on turning the tractor off - exhaust fumes discourage them. You could even see the arrivals pick up as immediately after it was shut down.

Morning from texas Mr. Ed!!
There was a great article in Bee Craft magazine last year about this method. They call it "tanging" in Britain.
I did this once when my hive was swarming. I beat on the side of my metal building with a soup spoon 🤣 cool stuff
Nothing short of impressive. But then, I’ve learned to expect that from your presentations.
Lead on.

Wow- the beauty of nature, and a crowbar with a hive tool too :)
Very glad it worked for you Jeff. I learnt this trick from you in a previous video. I did exactly the same as you did and they went 25 metres up a gumtree ...The highest any of my swarms have reached .. I even had an impact sprinkler on the hive they were leaving to no avail ....They were determined ...I think your prayers must be stronger than mine ...Ha ha .
Someone told me they did this with two pan lids. I wonder what makes them attracted to that noise. Great video!
It works with almost any metal knocked together. This was fascinating. Truly enjoyed it. Did the queen go in the box? Hive update please.
Oh yes, she went in, but there can be no update, this happened 3 years ago and I reposted the video because it is just so cool. Also, if you read the description of the video it give all the details of what happened. Thanks for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
That's great. Here is common knowledge. You need an metal empty pot and a hive tool. And a couple of people should be doing it.. to mimic a thunder storm, with a deeper sound. And do it longer time.
If you catch them swarming from one of yours this can make them move back
A question that came to mind while watching this video is, do Queen bees have a different body temperature than drones? If that is true, perhaps you can use a thermal camera to spot her heat signature amongst the thousands of others bees" A tool with a finer reading capacity to locate her could be created to do this? I am NOT a bee expert, so just sharing a curiosity. Thank you, as always for your fun and educational videos!
I do not know if there is a different temperature between a drone and a queen, it is an interesting idea if there were. God's peace Jackie.
Mr. Ed
Thank you Jeff.
Sweet spot congratulations
a great video i heard of doing that , glad you were able to retrieve the swarm , God has blessed you greatly take care
I've simply used swarm traps in far away areas to have 'Hunting Parties ' come and bring their queen to. I've lost count of how many swarms I've caught. About 500 in my first 5 years. I'm now disabled but still keep bees at home.
I fortunately have my beehives almost in my front door 9 hives I keep a hammer and a pan during the swarming. Close by if I catch them early enough I bang the pans and the bees will return to the hive. I then do my diligence to find the new Queen and prevent the swarming
That truly was Blessed by God, Mr. Ed! Thanks for sharing a technique I've never seen!

And just when I had thought I'd seen it all!
All those in the air remind me of my old 5-string pal that had over 200 hives behind his house. He hauled them all over to pollinate and whatever they do and got the honey hisself. The hum was plumb LOUD and the air was black from all them flying. I was SCARED to get out of the car in summer and wondered about it in winter. Books written a long time ago mention banging on stuff to attract bees. Bang away, Pal and have yourself a Jesus weekend and I thought those were DIESEL bees for awhile there!
