Simple method for new beekeepers to split a hive Use a double screened dividing board

I know for many beekeepers around the country, the thought of splitting your hives at this time of the year is only a distant thought. However, here in Southeast Louisiana, I have actually been doing splits since the beginning of March.
In this video I discuss a method that a beginning beekeeper can use, will have very little difficulty implementing, and have great success once it is completed. The method, using a double screened dividing board to make a split. This method is the very one I learned and started using in our bee yards over 10 years ago. The simplicity of it almost makes it fool proof, and I highly recommend it to any new beekeeper.
Also, if you don't know what a double screened dividing board is or how to build one, I made a video on that you can check out and build them yourself, the link is below. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

I think if I watched and listen to this about eight more times I might be able to remember most of it.
I'm willing to bet once more and you will have it. Thanks for watching, more than once. God's peace Robert.

I don’t usually wait five days to watch a new Mr Ed video but circumstances dictated it. And it was worth the wait to watch another awesome bee video. Thank you for your time and dedication to this.
Always happy to hear when folks like what they watch when they view one of my videos, thank you so much for your kind words and for watching. Until the next one, God's peace Carl.
Mr. Ed
I keep my tree trimmed up at the bottom. So it was easy to spot. What was surprising was, It was cold 60 deg and cloudy. The way they was hanging JUST GORGEOUS ! They looked like MINK FUR. I wish i could filmed it 😩 they was close to my apiary, but not my bees! They said, they just hang here! OLD JR will see us. 🏆😁 i so happy > I started the smoke method of combining queens and splits . My friends are using that method with great success! Just smoke the insides down good. Add them, smoke again good. Your good to go. The smoke make them not to smell any thing. Plus there confused. And are accepted ! 👍 It take about a week for the smoke smell to leave . EASY AS PIE 😁
Great to hear from you brother, I hope all is well. God's peace.

Very interesting. A division board isn't something that we have talked about in the past. 👍
A very simple, and effective way of making a split, and so easy even for new beekeepers. Thanks for watching. God's peace.

Hi Mr Ed! Didn't get a notification for a couple of weeks so made sure I checked. Seems my partner of 20+yrs, Emma, has seen some bees and their keepers on Tik Tok so I thought I'd introduce her to a REAL wrangler! She can get to know the whole crew.
Thanks for upload, God bless, Christian (and now Emma😁)
For some reason UA-cam will drop your subscriptions, I have been told by many, many folks they no longer get notifications of my videos. My advise, re subscribe, but remember, weather you get a notification or not, I still post a new video every Friday. Thank you for sharing my adventures with Emma. God's peace bother.

Great wrangling, but I missed the bloopers at the videos ending😉😂❤️💯🙏🏻
At the point you took the top box off - there was a lot happening at the entrance to the bottom hive. It's still there at 15:28. I'm sure it is not the start of a robbing that it looks like to someone like me who is at best a virtual beekeeper (never having stepped into a real apiary). What was that? Great video sir! Your double screen boards are epic!
It was not robbing, just a lot of activity due to the fact there were so many bees in the box. Our bees are very healthy this year. If you think the boards are epic, wait till you see the honey the bees produce this year. God's peace Julie.

Great information as always. At what point do you add a box to the hives with the queen?
I did not do it one the video, but I add the queen box right away as well. Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching. God's peace Hope.
Mr. Ed
Happy Easter Jeff! I love the idea of a double screened divider board especially for heat conservation and queen rearing. But with an operation of your size why don't you graft and then do a split and drop ripe queen cells in? It would reduce how long the box is queenless and you may still get a honey crop from the new split too.
Grafting is in my future for sure, stay tuned for that adventure. Happy Easter to you as well Jon. Thanks for watching. God's peace brother.
Mr. Ed
Thank you for this wonderful information! quick question I am new to bee keeping why would you not put a queen excluder between the new split when you added the super? Thank you
Because I run 2 deep brood boxes and a separate honey super, if I would use a queen excluder, and I don't, I would add it after the second brood box went on. Thanks for watching. God's peace.
Mr. Ed
Hi Mr. Ed, I love your videos and have learned much from watching you! My question to you is, what is the advantage of using a double screened divider over performing a walk-away split, where you move the split elsewhere? Also, why do you keep the queenright part of the colony on top and not on the bottom? God bless and be well my friend.
Though both accomplish the same goal, using a DSDB gives the advantage that if the split does not take, the colony can be rejoined to try again at a later date, as well as sharing heat between the 2 colonies during the split. Because I want the queen right hive to have fewer bees in it so as to discourage and lessen the chance of the hive swarming soon after the split, I move her off the original site and steal her field bees. Thank you for your blessings and for watching. God's peace John.
Mr. Ed
More power to the little goomers to do what they do best, I'll try not to mow them and let them have free reign here. Thanks, Palley! Hope all is well and have a Jesus weekend. GBWYall!
That's right, power to the groomers! Happy Easter, God's peace Lewie.
Mr. Ed
@@JeffHorchoff I was meaning the bees were little goomers BUT in your case it'll be gRoomers before long if not already. Almost 70 here today. here summer comes and GBWYall and especially YOU!
Where does the queen egg come from? Does one of the workers lay them?
The queen egg is laid by the queen. Even though all female bees can lay eggs, they are not fertilized and therefore can ONLY produce a drone, male bee if they lay eggs. Because the queen pheromone is so strong, it suppresses the urge for the other bees to lay eggs, and the queen is the only bee in the hive that lays eggs. Thanks for watching. God's peace Mike.
Mr. Ed
