Awesome TAS. Banzai has always fascinated me, it was so ahead of its time. I play kaizo:light hacks RTA, at some point I'd like to conquer this behemoth of a hack
Such a cool hack that stands the test of time. All the gimmicks are really well executed (even though some of them kind of make it hard for a TAS to do anything creative :P ) Always good to return to a video like this and just enjoy good ROMhacks. The quality of the product isn't lost within the TAS's shenanigans, either.
Finally got through the entire video :D I loved the TAS and I'm also quite impressed by the tech of the hack. Maybe I just don't enough hacks, but it amazes me how far they are pushing this game. I really enjoy watching your work and my poor amateurish eyes fail to notice any slip-ups (I'll keep looking for them tho :p) Please keep it coming :)
Finally, someone's TAS-ed the whole hack! Besides ingenious mechanics and generally robust execution, it has pleasant vanilla aesthetics and great music for that time. Some of it still holds up to this day, even several unsampled songs. The only major flaw is that it has many autoscrollers, a lot of them being long and dull. Minor, but there's a lot of unfairness in Penniless Mario, such as that tight Muncher jump. The entire showcase here is really nice, but you could've 6/5-ed through tight gaps with solid ceiling and there's no input from 14:20 until touching the orb?
Thanks. I am not quite sure what you mean with "tight gaps". If you mean 1x1 tile passages, 6/5 would be slower, as you need to jump for it to be effective. 14:20 was intentional. Running would not be faster than 11 frames.
@@Emerald_Shell As for the first answer, I am not sure if it is faster. I tested it, and it seems to be slower. As for the second, running on the platform would not save much time.
Wow, this came unexpected and was a nice trip down memory lane. Thanks for making this TAS, always nice to see optimized movement through these levels! 6:08 Nice glitch showcase 6:50 Always nice to see non-standard ways of killing reznor 15:12 A use of the pause button! I'm happy now 18:52 I'm a bit disappointed that no reznor was spawned here... it looks possible (I guess the sprite slots didn't align?) 45:40 What's stopping you from smuggling a yoshi into this level, getting a feather from the green !-blocks and skipping 3/4 switch palaces? 50:25 Why are you keeping p-meter here? Seems like keeping 49 speed would be strictly faster :o 51:15 ldadBlu ldadBlu ldadBlu 54:45 What's the point of getting the cape here? (Also, lol @ "Rerecords: Too Many")
Thanks! 18:52 - The P-switch sadly spawns in slot 7, so no reznor spawn is possible. 45:40 - I did not think about getting a feather from these blocks. As there is no cape in other place than the end level, and no switch palace corner sprite, I gave up on that idea and thought that I would just complete all switch palaces either way. 50:25 - You are correct 54:45 - There is no point, other than to finally get the cape at the end of the game. Perhaps I will someday make a really optimized version, with the improvements you suggested.
the thing i hate about this hack is that after like 3 levels you cant save, so i’m here completing exit 2938 trying to find a save so i can finally rest, at some point i just gave up
Great work, but I wish there were fewer unnecessary wall jumps and running back and forth. I get that TAS allows for some showboating, but it just made me nauseous after a while
Could you give some examples? I suppose you primarily mean the autoscrolling levels, which there are quite a few of in this hack. Would you prefer if mario stood still during the majority of these levels? I would like to understand your concern.
@Jba03 Not OC, but I find it hilarious and awesome when the TASer “gets bored during an autoscroll” and goes nuts doing tricks. It’s a TAS, and if you have the chance to stunt and show off, you should! It’d be too boring to have Mario stand still while waiting for the next move. TASing is art that requires good skill to do well, so the TASer should show off a bit, especially during downtimes like an autoscroll. I thought you did a fantastic job, and I throughly enjoyed the showboating. Keep it up!
