    I don't know if I'm right but I would have thought the suicide doors provide more cover so that both passenger and driver have cover from both front and rear fire.

      Every General is personable. You kind of have to be to make General nowadays. Especially during what equates to be a PR shoot. So yeah, it's not like he's going to berate Leno because Leno told him he forgot to check his sidearm before he went into the defac.

      Just how easy is it to become four star general in the US? In my country we only have three active people with the rank of four star general/admiral. That's the king, crown prince and the head chief of the military.

    The suicide doors are probably to provide more cover when entering and exiting the vehicle. If you've got 2 normal doors, you have no cover at your back so someone could very easily flank you while you're getting to safety.

      She kept running her mouth off camera (like a typical female) early on while he was taking to the General. It sounds like that irritated him big time, so he cut her off to let her know to STFU until she was asked a question. Notice at the end how he didn't call her "Doctor", just her first name. Shows just how much she irritated him.

      You can stop near some entrance and before you move out of the vehicle you can have protection from 4 sides and the attacker can only shot at your feets... "Think about that." And its not a taxi driver and the other guy on fron seat will be going out with you...

    • @suesan5111

      Both of them were AssAfirmative Quota hires. The General didn't seem to have the General knowledge and the Chief Engineer didn't understand the abs question. Sucide door DOES provide the benifit that you mention. I think it was also out of design necessity, cuz if you were to try to hang the 300lb+ rear door the otherway, you would end up with super thick pillars getting in the way. Just look at the door hinges.

    Adam Alvarez
    "A lot of times they'll build a prototype like this and knowingly ignore some of the faults in order to test more important things, like the engine, suspension and ergonomics. Once they get that stuff perfected, fixing all the little things gets a lot easier. If you try to do it all at once things will ALWAYS go wrong from the get-go."
    Exactly. They knowingly ignored all of the things that would keep them from making it fuel efficient. If they simply wanted to show that it could be fuel efficient, all they had to do was put that engine in ANY 15,000 POUND vehicle, and prove the powertrain system. Then design a vehicle to fit it. The fact is, if they had finished the thing off with everything it needs, it wouldn't have been "30% more efficient", so the whole thing is a failure. As a matter of fact, it's already been replaced by at least one iteration, the FED Bravo, in which they completely changed everything in the powertrain. It uses a Ford twin turbo V8, the front wheels are electrically driven, and it was designed by college students.
    Oh yeah, and it's 70% more efficient...
    doesn't have pushbutton door handles...

    Keep in mind that this is a 'project' vehicle developed to test lightweight materials and to improve fuel efficiency; it is not for war fighting. Danny Cannon and the few military guys that have been near real vehicles fill in some of the gaps. Popular Mechanics recently ran an article on a Stryker Brigade, where vehicles are differently configured for different parts of the mission. Those vehicles carry a nine-man team. This demonstration vehicle is four-man and might represent a command and control vehicle or serve a rapid reconnaissance function. As we saw this monster, it is a basic demonstrator about how a specific set of problems might be solved. It represents a different take on automobile use and the novelty itself is of interest to viewers outside the services.

      The intention of the HUMVEE was never to be a patrol vehicle. It was for base to base and in base use. People were misusing the intent of the equipment and wondered why it didn't work. These small armored vehicles will still not stop RPGs, rockets and 120+mm shells (even in IED form).

    I like that this FED is low-tech solutions to modern military problems. All the internal systems look easy to repair or replace. Its obviously not a front line or constant combat vehicle. Think of it as more like the ancient Jeeps, its for driving around a base or other areas that are supposed to be safer. Any sustained fire will shred the FED but it would provide enough protection that you have the chance to get the hell outta there.
    Another thing I respect about the FED is that it was designed to be the main "car" of the Army, it takes the place of all the non-combat vehicles. No need to have all the infrastructure for four car makers and a hundred different models, just one vehicle for the motor pool to learn about and store parts for.
    Also, anyone in the Army could drive it because it was designed with so many different uses in mind. The power steering and power brakes were really strong so even the smallest person in the Army can operate the FED as easily as the largest. I doubt the FED will be seeing much open desert in combat zones, however it would be right at home doing all the inter-base transportation. It seems like most of the rugged features are there as a "Better to have it and not need it" kind of thing, and the FED will spend almost all its time on regular roads with traffic maybe. So the anti-lock brakes and traction control don't seem like a bad idea.

      of retardation that coexists in the community....Some stupider than others. But you; you're something else...you've pushed the limits of every illogical premise and misunderstood simple concepts of an insult; I'll break it down, so even YOU can understand it:
      I told you to get a thesaurus; because a word you had no idea of was used in an initial comment.

      Leno nearly always interupts, but usually only to add an afirming or conversational interjection to the other talkers sentence/line of thinking. Sometimes it is eagersness or excitement, other times he is redirecting to back on topic, or killing BS, and other times he is being just a bit of a c*nt.
      He, Leno, is human, albeit an enviously rich one, but still appears relatively normalish compared to the many silver-spooned mega-elite economic-(US-)aristocracy types.

    After WW2 my father went back into the car business. He had eclectic tastes which I mistook for no taste at all. But every so often something weird would show up in the used car lot. One of my favorites was the Messerschmitt. During the US occupation Willy Messerschmitt couldn't build warplanes but he still had factories and machine shops and an imagination. So he built a 3-wheel car naturally called the Messerschmitt. It had a canopy but no doors, two tandem seats. From the aircraft shop came a yoke instead of a steering wheel to save space. It had a 175 cc two-stroke engine with a pull-cord starter (although mine would never start). I just wonder if there's a Messerschmitt (car) in the Leno collection. (We also had an Isetta but BMW didn't have Willy Messerschmitt's imagination.)

    Almost 5 years in the army and have never seen this. From the looks of it they can keep it. No turret, No rear visibility, Rubber air bags for suspension have they been to a war zone, I see so many flaws in design obviously not tested by soldiers. If they did you missed a few things. If they actually make this army wide I hope they make a lot of changes. Also what's the point of the flimsy single solar panel in the back. Were they trying to make a rugged camping rig. So hefty camping rig i would definitely take. To a war zone going outside of base I would take a different ride If I may. Yes it is designed better than the standard hmmwv. Of course it rides more comfortable. Have you seen the standard army seat. Your lucky to have padding at all.

    There should be two small robotic vehicles that travel in front of these troop carriers to set off mines.
    A robotic mine detector would be of the design to take an explosion and be able to be blown in the air and
    come down in shape for the troop carrier to proceed on down the road. This design is symmetrical vertically,
    so it no matter if it lands on it's back, it can motor on.

This is a demonstration of the checks and balances system. So how can America be a dictatorship when it uses the Madisonian model of government? In addition, 72% of the American people agreed with declaring war on terror after 9/11. Now, your counterargument might have been: "Well, the government is owned by the 1%, so they are all elitists." Congressmen are elected by citizens of the United States. So therefore, the 72% of Americans elected, and agreed with Congressmen declaring the War on Terror.

      Its the work of simple physics. For example, if you splash a cup of water at a flat wall at 90 degrees, the water will splash everywhere and will be absorbed by the wall(in this case, would be the bottom of a typical Humvee). But if you splash water at a V shaped wall, the water will hit the tip and divert most of the water past it. So in this case, it would be the bottom of the vehicle in the video. The IED or a roadside bomb of some sort would theoretically explode under the vehicle and divert most of the explosive pressure up and around and above the vehicle in the air so it doesn't blow the actual vehicle into shreds. :)

    • @WheatSn4ckBread
      @WheatSn4ckBread 9 років тому +1

      The Humvee has 4 wheel independent suspension and rides incredibly well over rough terrain at high speeds, for the amount that it weighs. That's just me though, I only spent 7 months riding around on the top of one of these as a turret gunner in Iraq. If you want blame to a military vehicle for spinal injuries, blame the MRAP. You wear a harness in that truck because you won't want to ride in it without one. Otherwise you will literally fly out of your seat and slam your head into the ceiling if your driver runs over a rock the size of a baseball.

    • @gary_beniford

      Bobby Boucher I saw a video about a soldier trying to get help from the VA because his spine had 3 smashed disks he claimed it was because the Humvees were always driving over bumps. he could barely walk but the VA just told him there was nothing they could do and refused his request for surgery.

    • @WheatSn4ckBread
      @WheatSn4ckBread 9 років тому

      Nobody in the units I was in had that problem. Most of the guys, actually wanted to ride in Humvees, or 7 Tons instead of the new MRAPs. Mainly because they have a more comfortable ride. The only reason anybody wanted to be inside of an MRAP was because it had 110 outlets. We had plenty of guys with back problems, but that was from lifting 100+ lbs rounds and emplacing/march ordering howitzers.

      +Tucker Dale You are correct. But it is supported and subsidized by you guessed it tax dollars. Who loans to the Federal Reserve? Yep the US Government. Then they loan our money back to us and charge interest. But the accounts the government deposit in the Reserve are for the most part interest free. So the profits are private but the costs are public. The rich get richer. That is why both Jefferson and Jackson so hated the idea of a "federal bank".

      +DanOfTheWild 35 gallons is larger than the humvees fuel tank and it gets 30% better mileage. At the same time the humvee is basically completely unarmored and has no defense against mines or ied's.

      Other than that this thing is perfect. It definitely needs a bigger tank.

      And a 7 speed. 4 forward, plus a granny gear, r1+r2. Although I do agree with jay, abs and traction control? Just something else to break. I hope the 4x4 is mechanicaly engaged, as well as the diffrentials and, tranfer case.

      Its in 4WD all the time, with a high lock which locks the center differential in the transfer case giving a 50/50 front & rear torque split plus 4WD Low Range...same setup that the HMMWV's have....and contrary to what many think the HMMWV's do not have locking front and rear differentials.

      Remember: This was designed by people who've never been in battle. That high 6-figure PhD engineer probably never designed a car before.
      But, the purpose is to show congress and other key political figures the Army is, as Dirty Harry would say, "Stylish." That way, they can get more R&D money, hire more PhDs and bigger staff for the general.
      "Mission Accomplished!"

      +madmanggo It's been a thing for a whole. I think the actual camo uniforms used in the field might be pixelated too. I heard it's actually better than the flowing organic shapes because of the way it tricks the human eye

    so theres no engine protection?

    • @spartavus2238
      @spartavus2238 8 років тому +1

      It's not a tank, the only part of the vehicle that really needs protection is the cabin to keep the crew safe. The idea is not to have an invincible vehicle, its to increase the survival rate from roadside bombs and other high explosives. If it was hit depending on the damage engineers can replace the engine and fix exterior parts.

      There never was in the HMMWV's either, as is the same for most military vehicles.

    I’ve honestly seen a few different trucks in the past 10 years that claim to be the replacement for the humvee but they’re still using them today. What happened to the JLTV?
