As a young apprentice mechanic, I would have a question on how to do something. Some journeymen were helpful while a few would point to the manuals room and say "everything you need to know is in there". I figured out they were insecure personalities that had the thought that if they taught me what they knew, I would know that and possibly more. The threat for them was that I could then replace them. This irritates me to this day. If someone is willing to learn what I can possibly teach them, I have no problem taking the time to explain.

As much as I appreciate the work and skill that Chris put into these cars imagine how hard it is to mass produce an automobile. The science, engineering, skilled trades and design that go into every modern car is almost unimaginable. The next time before you get in your car pause to imagine how the roof was made or how the door skin is perfectly smooth as it wraps around the door frame. Think about the engineering that goes into every engine or computerized system that makes your car run the way it does. P.S. I am a retired Process Engineer I worked on the plant floor for GM a few years back and I'm pretty proud of what us folks who build cars can do.

That car is absolutely gorgeous... It truly is a shame that handcrafted metal work is becoming a lost art. My dad could make anything out of a sheet of metal and have it look like a piece of art... He taught me a lot but when he passed so did a tremendous amount of skill that will be lost forever. This car is awesome... Takes me back to a bygone era of cars and drivers. Sort of reminds me of a Porsche 917 had it been built in the 50s... Thanks Jay for another absolutely great Garage episode.

  • @Mike383HK
    @Mike383HK 4 роки тому +1

You really have to understand aluminum to do that. I taught a lot of people how to work with it. What he would use is probably a 5052 marine grade aluminum. It's easy to form and easy to weld. If I were to make a chassis out of aluminum I would use 6061 because of it's machine ability and weld ability. Most aluminum boats are 6061 frame and 5052 skin. 5052 is great for salt water resistance. It's used for tanks. As in fuel and chemical and food. When you bend aluminum you have to use force from two directions to fix something. If you don't, something isn't going to come out well. This takes talent and boy does he have it. Monster kudos from an old pro.

Back in the 70's my grandmother's friend had worked in an aircraft factory making skins on an English Wheel. In her retirement she had her own wheel & made all kinds of neat stuff. She made a mock gas tank for my bicycle. She made a few bodies for pedal cars.
When I was a little older I tried to learn & it's very difficult. There is a real art to rolling metal like that. I managed to make some parts that looked like post crash aircraft parts. :)

What a great video of Runge and his work! I have been following him on Instagram for a while now, and it's great to see his machines take shape. He's an amazing craftsman.

It's about as close as you can get to a postwar racer. In the late 40's, early 50's it was easier to get aluminum than steel in Europe, cars like these were handcrafted in sheds with tweaked engines like 2cv Dagonnet, Peugeot 402 and 203 Darl'mat, Renault Boudot twincam, Constantin Supercharged flat-twin Panhard, Alpine A106...
It's an amazing job, although I'm not a big fan of KDF !

Agreed! Post WWII in Europe you worked with what you were lucky enough to get your hands on. Same in Japan.

Chris, I would be fascinated by a program on your ancestry.
Some of the most beautiful stone and wood artistry was done during the Middle Ages, especially in Germany and France. Can't leave out Italy. I've seen a lot of it from two feet away and it is awe inspiring. Standing a couple of feet from a cathedral wall outside and looking up hundreds of feet at the art and engineering that has been there for over half a millennium is an experience that can't be described. You have to do it. Same applies inside.
My point here Chris is that you must have artisans in your background because the artistry in your blood shows when you are doing things that are harmonious using only your eyes and your mind. You are a gift in this prefab, stamped out, thermo-molded throw-away society.

      Also had a stupid 3-speed slushbox on a 700hp twin-turbo engine, with 80's tech.
Still, you had countach, testarossas, etc... But the Vector W8 is the quintessential 80's hypercar.

The first porsche 356 1100 in '49 had 40hp and the 1300 between '50 and '58 had 44hp. So this performance was attained by the OKRASA fine tunings from engineer Gerhard Oettinger some of the 34hp engines in '53 had 57,5 hp afterwards accelerating out the "lady" porsches of the above mentioned engines in those days. It was situated at Osnabrueck where also Karmann was, and the abbreviation OKRASA means Osnabrueck institute of motor engine development (Kraftwagen Entwicklungs Anstalt)

I learnd my trade as a Boatbuilder in austria and one of the first things I learnd was that for visible srewheads you only use flathead screws and you ALWAYS ajust them to eighter the grain of the wood the are in or you follow the lines of the boat. THat way thy become less visible.
The same if you have to paint a surface by hand. always follow the lines of the boat or the grain of the wood your varnishing. If You've done your job properly the grain folows the lines anyways.
That makes brushstrok or roller marks far less visible and pronunces the bends and curfs in a ver subdule way.
Thats just Proper workmanship and not sticking to it would get you in to a lot of troble as a aprentice. It also, very quikly, becomes secound nature.
    cheers from europe
