Jay Leno Meets His Hero Bob Riggle And The Iconic Hurst Hemi Under Glass | CNBC Prime
I had the opportunity to meet Bob Riggle in May 2023. He was super cool and down to earth. Sad to hear he passed only a few months later. I remember my dad talking about the hemi under glass so it was cool to meet him. What a legend.
RIP Bob, You and Jay make a great team..
I'm from Mansfield and my boss is good friends with Bob Riggle. 78 years old and still rides motorcycles cross country. He comes into our store from time to time to see how we are. Fantastic guy
The way the show led into the crash I thought it was fake!
I was NOT expecting this! Given Riggles experience and track record this was a freak occurrence. Leno’s videos are usually pretty tame (in a good way). Totally surprised by the ending!
This was Riggles 2nd wreck in the Hemi Under Glass in the 50 years he's been running it. I'm looking for any info and or video of Riggles first wreck in the 'Cuda. I would appreciate any help in doing so from anyone put there. Thanks in advance.
This is a few years old. I believe Mr Riggle is turning 85 tomarrow. Hope it's his best 1.
This really resonates with me. My Grandpa and my Dad were truck drivers. my grandpa thought me more about life than I can summarize and I learned alot from my Dad. I am a mechanic by trade because I needed to if I wanted to race cars. Everything in this video reminds me of great men that paved the way for me to drive through life on on the best days. Thank you to all the great men who put humanity first and adrenaline next. We owe you more than what we can afford.
This is why Jay usually drives.
Just when you think nothing can happen, that helmet and gear come in pretty handy.
Glad nobody got hurt and it's old footage but epic footage.
You could tell he's experienced a rollover before. He kept that hand inside the window.
A bit of trivia. George Hurst is the man who invented the "Jaws of Life". The story goes that he had seen to many of his friends died in crashes that they could not get out of the car in time before it caught on fire.
I can believe he did invent the jaws of life, but not the reason..........have you ever seen how long it takes to break out, set up, and use the jaws of life? Because I've witnessed rescue workers using them during several incidents over the years, and it's time consuming. It exists and is used to remove injured people from a car so crushed, the doors cannot be opened. The jaws of life cuts large openings that enable rescue workers to extract injured people as safely as possible. It's also used.......unfortunately.......to get to people who died in the crash. They had to use one to extract my grandfather ( on my dad's side of the family, and no, I didn't witness it ) when he was killed instantly from a truck crossing into his lane and hitting him head-on. The car was crushed so badly, it was unrecognizable. At a glance, you couldn't tell if it was a Ford, GM, or Chrysler........other than the passenger side tail light that wasn't smashed beyond all recognition........a '58 Impala, if I remember correctly. This happened days before Christmas of '71.
I feel bad for Bob Riggle, the rare time you have an accident in the car, you've got a big fan with you.
Talk about sods law or what.
That's the way the universe works at times.
That's the full experience!
That was outstanding thanks for keeping it real and sharing the Oops!
Wow..... Keep it easy on that bucket list Jay! We need class guys like you! :) Glad neither of you were injured!
Jay! You are absolutely the best comedian I have ever had the pleasure to listen to. Even after rolling over numerous times with your life passing before your life you come out on top of your game in jokes. After real concern for you both you had me laughing my a off. I lost it on the one about you do this all the time that's why you have so many cares. lol
R.I.P. Bob Riggle
You have fulfilled one of my bucket lists!
So much for bucket lists. A Leno. Yea, I saw him and lil red wagon in Altha,Fla. About year 2000. Something about 13 ft in the air. And a light bulb. 😂😂😂
Dude I'm glad J kept his hands in the car
very cool, The Hurst company was about 10 miles from where I worked, we did all the heat treating of the parts for the shifters until 1981 when they sold out or moved, unreal how many shifters were made, Robert Wooler Heat Treat Company closed in March of 2021and I am now retired
They are both really lucky to have escaped without injury in that crash. You can see Jay instinctively keeping his arms/hands inside the car as it rolls. I would imagine it would be easy lose an arm in a rollover having it crushed if it was dangling outside the car...Having said that, it was pretty f-ing funny to watch!!
Not so much lucky as prepared. This car has a great safety system in place. It has a really good roll cage and seat harness as well as a real steel body, not fiberglass.
@@warrenmichael918 Right! I didn't notice the full harness...I met a guy who lost his arm in a crash on the highway. I don't know if it was a roll over like this but it madw mw think of him when I saw this...Thanks for clarifying...
@@wam44 Posted wrong comment about another video here sorry! LOL
@@wam44 Anything can and does happen, no matter how safe the car is. I just know most of these fancy race cars and other weird specialty cars usually have a full cage and harnesses in them that are above and beyond what is considered safe! Did you notice the scrapes on top of Jays helmet when he pulled it off? Hid head was at least making some contact with the roll bar or roof as they were rolling. Im sure he didnt even really notice it as it was happening but you can bet if he wasnt strapped in good or not wearing a helmet that he would have had some serious pain in his big ol punkin! LOL
@@warrenmichael918 Hahahahahaa!! He does have a melon head! Yeah rollovers aren't fun...I will take a look at the helmet again...
So glad everyone is okay and better yet how you both just seemed to laugh it off. It's hard to believe the car turned over so easy.
I can laugh now only after seeing that both legends were ok .
Wow! Now that was a ride. Glad no one was hurt..
Not a fun ride, to be sure, but fancy editing aside, I think it only rolled once.
You might want to re-watch that if you're serious.
@@sleepingninjaquiettime Yeah, I counted. It rolled once, but was shown from 3 angles, making it look like more.
@@ClayLoomis1958 man u r right it is only one ... I re-watched it two times to be sure but the editing really made it look like it was multiple rolls
@@nitinshukla1370 Yes, they don't say how many times it rolled, but it's more exciting to watch if it looks like more, so, a little editing and...........
No way! You're right! The very last cut of the crash reveals it.
I think part of the problem was it should have been done at a drag strip. That car was meant to go straight and that ground was not level at all with obstacles
With an old geezer behind the wheel who had no business being there.
Real Man!!
I knew I saw this before, Jay Leno posted this video 5 years ago!
I was NOT expecting that… holy crap…
Been there done that. This is when a very abbreviated and quick thought immediately flashes: "I'm dying"? Nothing you can do but brace yourself by tightening every muscle in your body and wish the violent motions and noises would come to an end, with you still alive..........Opened my eyes...I'm in an ambulance....lights...paramedics...I survived...can I move my legs and arms...YES! Am I gonna have internal bleeding and die it's not fair!? Anything broken? Came out alright. Went home next morning. I lost the fear of death, but accepted it's terminality!
Eagle-eyed viewers would notice in this vid, when they first show the hemi under glass engine by itself in frame, the car is already crashed
Jays a decent stand up guy
He just passed last Month at the age of 88 I saw him in 93 Topeka Kansas that strip is gone now to
Apparently you didn't know Bill Maverick Golden' the Little Red wagon 👍❤️
didn't see that coming
Ugh. Yeah. Ouch. I'm just going to sit here and be thankful no one was hurt and try not to be totally disillusioned. I love the hemi under glass. Ugh. Brutal.
Jay's chin predictably survived.
I thought he was going to say....Whats your name? And please show me your Lic. and insurance.✊😂
Way to keeps those hands in the car Jay 👏
BURNT OUT ON JAY.
R.I.P bob riggle 2023
Every time you let a couple of kids get ahold of the car keys.
Wtf is wrong with people? Everyone who watched the video should give a thumbs up for a performance like that!!
Got an autographed picture when I was a little kid from him
Rock and Roll! Glad you guys are okay. Gotta watch those 80 year old wild men.
WOW!!!!
Ouch 😳
Holy Smoke I can’t believe that happened. Somehow I don’t think rolling the car was part of Jays bucket list
Now he can write it in, and strike through it immediately!
I mean the dude is 80 he may be a experienced race car driver but hes still 80. Look at air show crashes always some 80 yr old guy in an old plane
I just watched a video from 11 years ago we're either this car or a car just like it was driven by the same guy doing wheelies at the Goodwood expedition event/show...
I tell you what,... it's a good thing that Jay's arm didn't go flying out the window!!!
Something that does this sort of thing should have window nets on both sides if there's gonna be a passenger. Sheesh!😬
('LS George' on the Cleetus McFarland Channel had the same sort of thing happened to him in a rear engined Fierro at the Freedom Factory... And they decided to never drive that car again....)
At first I thought it was special effects, like no way that car is flipping like that. Glad Bob and Jay are okay, hurts to see that car get so damaged. And I remember getting in trouble with a Hot Rod magazine. It was recess at Clarendon Elementary in San Francisco, '66 or so, and I am a little kid on a school bench, drawing cool cars from an issue of Hot Rod which my Dad let me borrow. And the Yard Monitor, a teacher in a long coat and cat-eye glasses, comes over and gets all cranked at me for not playing kickball or whatever. And she had that big bell, too. She was serious.
Might be an idea to fit window netting 👍
Bad testing grounds, the back end flopping like a fish out of water and the turn was a killer. In hind-sight its easy to see what the better driving choice would have been.
Stick to the drag strips, no corners & no banking, just a straight away with plenty room to stop. Sincerely glad they are alright, Jay did a whole lot of shaking in that seat, next time he'll pull those belts down one more time.
feel sorry for poor old BOB
Gramps almost killed Leno....
Total rookie move, suspension bouncing and the old geezer cranks the wheel to the right. DUH!
Time for him to retire and crash rocking chairs.
Jay Leno called the driver his hero but seven months earlier he wasn’t even sure of his name when he did a feature for his youtube show: 1967 Plymouth Hurst Barracuda - Jay Leno's Garage. He said “is it, is it Bob Riggle, I think his name is" and looked to the VP of B&M for confirmation. If he's your hero you know his name. Bob Riggle is not even the original driver of the Hemi Under Glass. "Wild Bill" Shrewsberry is and half the b/w photos they showed were of Shrewsberry. CNBC: You should stop Jay from conning the public with this footage. The car only rolled one time and landed upright on its tires. In a July, 2016 Autoweek article written by Leno, he said "We rolled over and over then came to a rest."…Not True! They rolled once slowly and landed upright on the wheels. They edited the footage. The car they used was a new build with no racing history. Hurst never built a 1969 Hemi Under Glass.
Glad no one got hurt. Love to meet both of them. But I live in Maine so I probably won't see either one of them ..
Just as scary as the first time I saw this .
Lol I knew I'd seen it before, and I felt bad for the old man. Didn't want to again see the awkward humiliation he went through, but I clicked anyway!
@@anamaakotube It looked like a bad over correction on the rebound bounce. Hard to make a resonable response under the conditions of speed and impact with the narrow track of the skittish 'Cuda. Those aren't cheap to replace. 😢
What could go wrong yeah right 👍 with a hemi you never know
It could have been worst thank god there both are ok!
I meant to do that😂😂😂
I can just hear Mavis now ------ So darling, did you do anything out of the ordinary today?
You answer - --- No, Sweetheart, just another boring day at the garage. LOL LOL!!!!!
Of course l am glad no one was hurt back a few years now...But this is one of the funniest things l have ever ever watched lol lol lol lol...Thanks for the replay....!
Not many race cars I know have a properly mounted passenger seat along with all the belts.
Hmmmm....
Two legends doing boy things
Oh...bummer. Thank goodness no one was hurt!
Looks like Bob Riggle was Team Coco lol
Me too I have always wanted to roll over numerous times in a car. lol
What do they say about meeting your heros......Lol
I know this is an old video but I wonder if Jay Leno had a clean his pants out
Jeez, that was some roll! Glad you both got out unscathed.
Whooooooaaaa!!! 4:50 Goodness!!! That's intense!
Jay is so LUCKY he pulled his hand in when he did, he would have been missing fingers. Watch that interior camera shot again of Mr. Leno ua-cam.com/video/OT789MAVVBs/v-deo.html
Just duck tape and bondo the car back together and go!!! Hahahaha!!! 😜😜😜😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
You'd be hard pressed to find a more iconic car.
Forgot the radio and did you
Not designed to turn left.
Or right.
Wow shocking. Wasn't sure I was seeing what I was seeing.
The driver only knew how to ride that thing on straight line, how he tried to make a turn when the car is still in such speed is befalling!
You should read more into it. He didn't want to do it there, he said it was a bad idea, his hand was basically forced
Jay Leno can we build a car together and run it in cannonball run race. Hopefully they run another race like cannonball. Lol!!!
Bet that wasn't on your bucket list, Jay!
Soon as his back wheels bounced up and left the ground the problem started.
The car was bouncing and he turns the wheel hard right for no reason.
He should have retired well before that.
that poor car
No way...
lol
Lol
Well you get a BIG tub of lard on one side of a vehicle, what do you expect ?
Think you should roll a locomotive next.
Why the *uck!, did he destroy that car????! I never want to see anything, like that, again,...ever!! I'm glad, him and Jay, were alright though. But damnit!
#HemiUnderGlass
Rawhide ))
Thank You, and Thankfully Your are both OK - The Car, not so much...
Old footage.
omg moment
😱Holy crap! 🚗💨 🥴
Dementia Under Glass...
Jay's last words will be a joke. He was more upset about the car than his self.
Wow wee !!! Lucky you didn't stick your arm out the window , you might have lost it 💪
The car is a pile of junk anyway after making it a rear engine wheel stander. No loss at all. The best part is that Neither were injured.
Like riding a bull in the rodeo
😮 too much viagra
I can laugh now only after seeing that both legends were ok .
