I can't believe that this vid is almost 5 yrs old! This is by far the most informative and easy to understand guide to MAC foundations this should have more than a MILLION views by now!
Ok so i just started working at mac in in the UK and i have not yet sent on basic training! You have just basically taught me what i need to know on our foundation range and saved my life! lol. The most informative and awesome channel i have ever visited! Thank you soo much for helping me start and organize my kit and everything else! U have no idea!!!! Love u!!!
I feel like every time I need to know something about a product, I check your channel first to see if you've talked about it! You are such an incredible wealth of knowledge!
I just stumbled upon your videos today. WOW!!! Finally someone who explains this well. I get it now! I always felt so confused and intimidated at the MAC store. **THANK YOU**
Please do an updated version of this! This was helpful for me when I was first purchasing a MAC foundation in high school, but I would really like a new version!
This is definitely one of the best make up videos I've ever seen on UA-cam simply because it was so informative and so much effort was put into it. Thanks a lot!
i cannot express how thankful i am for this video, i'm a new MAC artist n eventhough i have gone through the MAC product handbook, your personal review is so enriching and i feel like you're my trainer (cos my basic school's not until march 2013)
i am so glad that you did this. i have been boggled by mac foundations and never knew which one(s) to get. thanks for clearing things up (ridiculously awesomely too!) so grateful for this series. thank you!!!
These guides are THE most informatively done guides on youtube for all levels of MUA's.. I'd like to see updates too, maybe including matchmaster and the new mineralize etc. Come on Dusty! :)
This is the BEST foundation review, overview, guide, etc. I have ever seen! Thanks for the hard work you put into this. It's so helpful because MAC foundations can be a little intimidating.
This is exactly what I was looking for when I typed 'MAC foundations 101' into google. Thanks so much for all the time and effort you spent to make this comprehensive, well edited video. It goes above my expectations of what I thought it would be. I also love the mix professionalism and personaity. I'm sick of seeing reviews that are rambley and talk about things like the youtuber's cat or some such nonesence. After watching 2 minutes of the video I had to subscribe. Thanks again.
OMGGGGG u have no clue how helpful this was for me! im 16, sooo i dont have much high end makeup brands and when i do buy something i have to make sure it is the perfect thing i am looking for! so i appreciate it! thanks! :)
Thank you SO helpful! First videos i see in youtube that actually goes on detail with every foundation, especially when your starting with your basic kit with mac cosmetics:) THANKS AGAIN!!
i could swear that i've seen this video like 10 times....basically everytime i wanna try a new foundation by mac or learn a couple of things about a particular foundation that I'm thinking of trying out
I am seriously obsessed with all your changes of looks throughout your videos. I LOVE THEM! I'm a new subscriber (and MAC employee candidate) and gain so much knowledge from your videos. THANK YOU! KEEP ON FILMING!
Thank you for the well thought out review, I have stayed away form MAC foundations because there seemed to be too many and i could never find a MAC artist who had enough knowledge to explain the differences... sad.. I like the fact that you gave the objective description and then had the link to the personal review, I got so caught up and watched the whole thing in one sitting.. Thanks again!!
I always recommend trying out some and taking some test shots (with and without a flash) just to see what you think you like the most. My personal favorite (and I mention it in this video) for photography is Studio Fix Fluid. It's high-coverage and looks amazing on the skin in photos.
In a kit I think you need options. My two most used ones are Face & Body and Studio Fix Fluid but I also have several others like Estee Lauder's Double Wear and Double Wear Light. I used to keep Chanel's Pro Lumiere in my kit but it's not in production anymore. If you're only going to pick one, then pick something that's full coverage that you can sheer out with moisturizer or water.
After like months of oggling at MAC foundations(MAC is really expensive here for some strange reason) i finally bought the prolong wear and it was AMAZINGGGG:DD i really really love it and the best thing is that it stays on for ages despite the hot and humid weather here! thanks for the vid dusty!
Thank you so so much for doing this! It is indeed THE definitive guide to MAC foundations that a lot of us have been waiting for and I love the fact that you have done separate personal reviews on all of them too. It takes a lot for me to add a video to my 'Favorites' and this made it in the first few seconds! :-)
I love this video! I've been wanting a full overview of all of their different foundations and this is just perfect. Thanks so much for taking the time out to make this video. :D
If you like the way it looks, then I'd say go for it. You can also warm up the under-eye area with skin corrector in orange or dark peach tones (hint: lipstick works as well, Morange by MAC is a fine skin corrector that you can mix with foundation or concealer to warm it up).
Studio Fix Fluid. It's my personal favorite and based on what you want and what you've used, I think you'd like it. If you have oily skin it may oxidize on you so pick up a couple samples first if you can't return it (in case it doesn't match or you just don't like it). It's provides fairly full coverage, is very smooth looking and doesn't bounce light back (check your powder too though).
this is by far THE BEST and most in depth video about mac foundations and to think this was posted two years ago and i only saw it now! :) thank youuuuuuu!!!!! subd :)
Hi there, I'm writing to you from sunny Spain and I have to say your videos are fab, and watching you feels like watching a great frien talking to you about all this stuff we like. I am a make-up artist myself and it was funny when I saw your papers on MAC foundation because that is what I do as well, take notes on all the ones I get to use. Anyway, it great having you around. Thanks for sharing all of your tips. Bye gorgeous!
this doesnt feel like 20mins really. its definitely not boring like other videos past 10 mins! thank you very much for this video, very informative. :)
Honestly I think that you gave a great video regarding these famous fundations and I've never seen as video as helpful as this one.... Keep up the good work and you have my subscription for sure :)
This video helped me SO much. I realized I was about to buy the totally wrong foundation. After this video, I definitely found the one perfect for me! You're seriously the most knowledgable person I've found on here so far :) Thank you
Just wanted to say thank you so much for taking the time and effort to produce this vid. Very very helpful, and way better than any explanation we can get at MAC counters. Not sure about USA, but in Singapore, the girls at the MAC counters are terrible!
Thank you! I'm working on an update for this video with the new foundations that are available (ones that aren't in this one). It's a little slow-going because I actually want to re-film everything with better lighting and better equipment :)
This is such a great thorough review! I found this incredibly helpful. Thanks so much for making the task of trying to choose a foundation much less intimidating and daunting!
I'm such a huge fan of you! your videos are simply the best and most entertaining beauty vids on youtube. I think I could seriously watch a full-length feature film where you talk about nothing but mascaras haha!
Aside from living in an air conditioned room (which I don't really advise), you're really going to need to experiment. Sweating is a little different than dealing with oily skin but the same products usually help: Moisturizer, Primer, Powder, Transfer-resistant or waterproof foundation, etc. If you have clear skin opt for a tinted moisturizer and PRESS your powder into the skin with a puff. Blot papers can help too. Mix and match your products and experiment to see what works for you! :)
That was so amazing! Thank you so much for taking the time to do that massive review! As a side note tough, I think a "bang for your buck" sorta section (just like you did for the concealers) would have been great. I always feel I have to choose between expensive foundation that matches me or afforable and blah..
This is a great help. I was looking for something like this to try a new MAC foundation. I wish I'd seen this video before I bought the stick "foundation" from MAC. I ended up giving it away. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO SO INFORMATIVE!!!
Hey Dustin, can you do an updated overview on both concealers and foundations? Also can you do a video the best products for a upcoming freelance makeup starter kit? Please Thank you
This video has the best information and advice on youtube that i have come across about mac foundations. I have tried quite a few of them myself, having very oily skin I also favorite studio fix fluid to any others. The studio Fix powder has a great texture but did have the white look in photos, and because i'm very oily needed touching up a lot : ( love your video!
Great video, it's really very helpful! It's saved me much time, since i didn't have to watch each and every complete review, just went straight to the 2/3 products that seemed accurate for me. Thanks a lot!!
Studio Fix Fluid also oxidizes on some people, turning yellowish - it's more often than not going to happen on oily areas, but can happen anywhere. That could be part of the problem. The setting powder is one of those things that you can speculate on for days and days wondering what will happen but honestly, you won't know until you try (it's not a difficult experiment and doesn't cost anything ;) Re: Pro Longwear, I've just had luck with it around fine lines before. Worth a shot :)
Foundation as a concealer or a concealer, you're spending just as much time. If you don't like heavy foundations you won't be happy using one. If you're only talking about occasional pimples and some minor dark spots you might be better off just getting a pen-style concealer (like YSL's Touche ÉCLAT but heavier). Everyone and their uncle makes one. I use them all the time on myself; they travel well and take seconds to apply! They're all different so test a few out to see what you like :)
Thank you so much for this review! I watched the video yesterday and bought my foundation today, you made it really easy! I thought I would go crazy trying to find the perfect match! I guess from now on, you are gonna be my make up guru, thanks!
@BiEskinazi same rules apply for any liquid foundation (because they are easy to blend). i keep 6 face & body foundations in my kit (C1, N2, C4, N6, C9, N12) plus white. look at your client base though - that will impact your shopping list. i would always recommend face & body in white (it's just VERY helpful, you can mix it with any foundation and lighten it), then a light shade, mid-tone shade and darker shade.
ooh && btw i LOVED this video. studio tech was my first mac foundation && every time my friends wants to knw something a certain foundation i tell them abt this vid
thank you soo much for this, it was amazingly helpful! you described everything in great detail and it was entertaining as well as interesting so it didn't feel like a long video at all!
Gosh, how long did it take me to find this video! This actually helped me A LOT, because using Studio Tech tends to make my skin look ashy & dry when I use it, as my skin is somewhat dry. Flash photography would make my skin look a couple shades lighter when I put Studio Fix Powder to set it. I remember using studio fix fluid and it was perfect & I am totally going to go back to it. Thank you so much!
That depends on how FULL you're thinking full coverage should be. Like most full coverage foundations, MAC's "Full Coverage" foundation can be applied lightly with a brush (like I do in the demo), sheered out very thin with a damp sponge or built up heavy with a dry sponge. It's easy to layer and you absolutely get full coverage from it. When I say "medium to buildable" I mean it can go on as light as medium and then be built up to full coverage.
Fantastic review! I always love when people do reviews on MAC foundations and yours has been the most informative and in-depth that I've seen so far. When I began using MAC products, I started off using Studio Tech and Studio Fix foundation years ago in high school (loved it), switched to Mineralize Satin finish (meh...) with MSF Natural (yay!), and now I'm finally using Pro Longwear, which I love so far! I have combo skin and I like medium to full coverage. Concealer review next please! :)
you are the bomb! * you are educated in what you are talking about - hooray for your research & A for EFFORT :-) * you speak so well - born for video * heart your sense of humour what more could we ask for... ive subscribed to your channel & look forward to plenty more popcorn 'n butter fingers. seriously tho, keep up the fabulous reviews.
I have dry skin as well. Good skincare is your best best (as well as picking the right foundations - stay away from anything with a matte finish especially). Exfoliating once or twice a week with a good AHA chemical exfoliating mask/cream (not BHA) can REALLY help dry skin to kind of "re-boot" and re-charge. I always recommend Terra Firma's Pumpkin Mask to friends (I buy it as gifts for everyone too! LOL) because I've had such good luck with it.
Thank you! There isn't really an answer to that question because it all depends on what suits you best. Studio Tech is sort of designed to not NEED a powder but some people will use it anyway. This isn't wrong if it works for you (there is no such thing as "wrong" with makeup IMO - if it works for you, do it). Regarding pressed vs loose, that's entirely your own personal choice. They both work the same so, whichever you'd prefer :) Hope that helps!
Hi Dustin, I was searching for information on Mac Foundations and products on youtube when i came across ur video. I LOVED it so much and was taking down notes. I'm new to MAC products how sad hahah and need some help. You Sir now have a new Subi :). Please keep this vids coming !! Great voice, nice and calming and detailed explanation on the products.
@aalamode Thanks :) The individual videos are actually listed in the info section as well. I don't know if you can see info on moble UA-cam though... Glad you liked the video though and thanks again :) xo
If you like the way it looks, there's no real need to change up the routine. They do have several different setting powders that you can use, Studio Fix Powder offers the most coverage out of all their powders.
Skincare concerns really require a skincare professional - which I am not so I usually shy away from giving TOO much advice. I was never trained in skin and only know what I know from my own experience. I have dry skin too though, Studio Tech looks horrible on me because of it. My skin is quite fond of oils so sometimes I will put oil in my foundation or use oil with my moisturizer (coconut oil, etc.). I've also found that exfoliating with a good AHA exfoliator twice a week will help me :)
Wow, this is awesome. Thanks so much for doing this! I was afraid of MAC foundations before because I've heard some really mixed reviews of different ones- so it was good to hear just the facts about them! :) You're the best!
The only one I can think of with a matte finish and that coverage level is Studio Fix Fluid. If that's the one you tried it could be an issue with the silicone levels in the product (they bother some people). I love the way it feels but my dry skin adores silicone! :) It's not matte but if you don't mind powdering, pick up a sample of Face & Body, I know it's not the coverage level you like but it wears like a tank and I have good luck with using it for oily skin types :) (It also layers well).
Iv been liking for a new foundation from mac for awhile and really wanted to invest in the right one for my skin so this was very helpful thank you :)!
Thanks so much, this was Sooooo helpful, I have yet to buy MAC foundation and thanks to your video I now have a few lines that I'd like to try out that I may not have bothered with originally. Thanks again!
Thank you! :) I know there are a couple foundations that I need to add to this round-up (it's over 2 years old now). I'm thinking in the new year that I'll be doing more individual foundation reviews instead of these massive overview videos. I like these and they are helpful, but it's harder to keep them up-to-date :)
Thank you so much Dustin for your recommendations and taking the time to respond :) ..... I will search for the Mask ASAP !!! Have an awesome day and keep those vids coming. XOXO
Omg thank you so much for the time and effort you put in this video for everyone... I learned a lot and i guess ill just stick to studio fix foundation :) i love it!
Great video, very informative and I learnt a lot I now have a better view on the foundations. I checked how long the video was after watching it and couldn't believe I had been watching it for 20 minutes, which is a really good thing cause I can't of been bored at all through out the video! On top of that your a really cool guy and make me laugh! Thanks! X
It depends on what you're concealing... if it's blemishes then ABSOLUTELY match your skin tone (you don't want to go lighter and highlight the blemish). If it's undereye darkness that you're concealing then you have some room to play - some people swear by using a concealer that's one shade lighter than your skin tone for undereye circles. My personal preference is to not. I prefer to just match the rest of the face UNLESS I'm doing something like drag/showgirl makeup.
From MAC... probably something moisture rich. I like the tinted moisturizer but if that won't give you the coverage you need, then I'd suggest picking up some samples to test them out. I'd go for liquids before powders though and if you don't mind stepping away from the MAC counter, there are several nice brands (Youngblood for example) that make really nice liquid foundations that have ingredients that might be easier on your skin. I've had problems eczema, I feel your frustration! Good luck :)
@BrunetteEmily11 a green-toned primer, skin corrector and/or foundation will help cover redness. however if you have rosacea, many drugstore and even department store foundations can make the problem much worse. using a more natural mineral foundation is the best way to go.
I really enjoyed this video. I have tried many of the foundations you talked about but I am interested in trying the face and body one. Thanks for the review.
I can't believe that this vid is almost 5 yrs old! This is by far the most informative and easy to understand guide to MAC foundations this should have more than a MILLION views by now!
Ok so i just started working at mac in in the UK and i have not yet sent on basic training! You have just basically taught me what i need to know on our foundation range and saved my life! lol. I can't believe that this video doesn't have more views! You put in so much for this! Thank you! It was extremely helpful!
Medium to buildable means it gives medium coverage but is buildable to something approaching full (if not completely opaque) coverage.
I always recommend trying out some and taking some test shots (with and without a flash) just to see what you think you like the most. My personal favorite (and I mention it in this video) for photography is Studio Fix Fluid. It's high-coverage and looks amazing on the skin in photos.

can you do an updated version of this video please ♡
I love your personality and sense of humor, plus those glasses are so sleek!

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO SO INFORMATIVE!!!
Hey Dustin, can you do an updated overview on both concealers and foundations? Also can you do a video the best products for a upcoming freelance makeup starter kit? Please

what more could we ask for...
ive subscribed to your channel & look forward to plenty more popcorn 'n butter fingers. seriously tho, keep up the fabulous reviews.
Wow!! This video is just awesome. I love how you just explain everything. Your voice is so like soothing, (sorry bit weird) it keeps you listening!!
Thanks for this tutorial . I understand more about what makeup to purchase now.
Thanks again for another excellent tutorial. You are genius at this . Thanks again and keep them coming xx
Thank you for the freezer tip! Now I don't have to feel like I need to use up all my liquid foundation before I buy a new one!
XOXO
thank you so much! been really confused about what to pick between all of these type of foundations.
Omg thank you so much for the time and effort you put in this video for everyone... I learned a lot and i guess ill just stick to studio fix foundation :) i love it!
This is an amazing review. So informative and insanely helpful thank you for taking so much time to do this
Omg the best and most informative video on mac foundations that I have ever seen thankyou sooo much it was very helpful x
Your videos are always entertaining and informative. BIG Thanks! :)
From MAC... probably something moisture rich.
