Ready for my unscripted, unrehearsed opinions on MAC foundations? That’s what I’m giving you in this video! No disclaimers, no pretense, just content. I’ve included any extra information or helpful links here so if you have any questions, please read on and then enjoy the video!
I’ve used MAC foundations for years. I think of them as no-frills, workhorse, get the job done foundations. I know them well and, while I don’t like all of them, MAC makes some of my favorite foundations that I know I can rely on time and time again.
Often MAC foundations are split into cool (NC) and warm (NW) undertone categories. What MAC calls “cool” and “warm” is also opposite from most makeup companies so if you’re looking at a MAC foundation and you have blue/pink undertones, you’re going to go for NW shades, whereas if you have yellow/golden undertones, you’re going to be looking at NC shades.
One of the biggest mistakes that people make when shopping for foundation is expecting everything they want in one bottle. That’s just not the case. Our bodies change over time. Our skin changes over time. One formula may not work every day, year in and year out. There’s also no way of knowing how your skin will react to something until you try it; the same foundation that doesn’t oxidize on me may oxidize on you. Just one shade may not ever work for you either; mixing your foundations to get the proper color match is something I would call normal.

THIS is the kinds of videos I want more of. Not only are you offering your likes and dislikes, but you are making (in my opinion) valid points that people should know. I'll always be referencing this I think when I go looking for more foundations.
Side note: "You can argue with me all you want. I don't care, because you are going to be arguing with yourself" causes me to laugh so hard I had to rewind to hear what you said after that. (Can I put this on a shirt for my job? Because I am going to do that.)
Haha yes! Completely! And thank you.
Wonderfully informative!! Thank you ❤️
You are welcome and thank you for watching!
Thanks so much Dustin. Glad to see you on the regular!
Thank you for updating your MAC foundation video. Great information presented with your usual affability that always makes me feel like we’re having coffee somewhere... I look forward to the next one!
You are appreciated! Welcome back!
Having you back on UA-cam so regularly is so nice. You really make the day a bit nicer.
Thank you!
Thanks darlin!
Havent subscribed this fast while being fully convinced ever!! Thank you for the detailed and understandable information! this video was very informative and helpful, also your voice is soothing. and as a change from other youtubers, a tolerable long video that doesn't get the viewer to feel bored. Thank you!! ♡♡♡
Nour K.E Thank you very much! I appreciate that! I edit a lot of my videos down but it’s not about making myself look better than I am haha! It’s more about making sure you don’t get too bored! LOL! Thank you! 🤗😘🤗😘
You are without a doubt, one of my favorite youtubers. Thank you for making classy, quality content! ❤️
My middle name is Classy! Actually its not. But thank you anyway. THANK YOU! xo
I love both your old and new videos on guide to Mac foundations! So informative!😊
I really do love how informative your videos are.
Face and body has been in my wish list for a while. You are making me hurry in buying it😁 I like the practicality and professional taste that we get of your videos, while everyone is freaking out about the last thing that comes out, you remind us what makeup is about😊
I'd like another tipsy video😂😁
Haha! Thank you! I’ll keep all of that in mind 🤗😉
Thank you for this very helpful video! Always happy to see and hear you :)
Yessss
I adore your videos
So informative
And your voice is the best asmr 😊
Danny Manivanh literally came here to say that lol his voice is so soothing!
Haha thank you x
I think it’s basically because he’s a kind person and that is reflected in the way he talks. Kind with an edge, the best combination.
I’m so happy you’re uploading more! Thank you so much.
Thank you for saying that and thank you for watching!
“Hurrah for you!” 🤣 I love your humor! Thank you for all the info. Best guide that I’ve seen. Hugs, Summer xo
I absolutely live for your content, but especially your informational videos.
Amazing!! Thank you sooo much for this video ❤️ excellent description , good job
Awesome video! Answered all the questions I didn't even know I needed to know. This is the UA-cam I miss. Keep up the good work.
Kim Thank you! I’m glad this was helpful for you!!
Omg! Yes!! You've always been so entertaining while also informative!! Yes!!!
This was very descriptive and helpful, I'm going back to MAC for foundation again and this helped me tremendously in figuring out which one to choose, I think im going to get the last foundation you mentioned on here. Thanks so much! 😸
Foxy 5150 You’re welcome! I’m glad this was helpful!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! You’re always so informative! Glad to see you back more regularly/often! 😊
so glad you did a new mac guide video!
Thanks for the video Dustin :) I watched your guide to MAC foundations a few years ago.
Thank you for giving us all the details. Sometimes I just don’t know which MAC product to get. But now I know kind of. Thank you
Glad I found this video. Very informative and helpful. Thank you so much.
You're welcome! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Dear Dustin, I discovered your channel when I was searching for "depotting foundation" last year, I found your MAC foundation palette. Then I watched more and more because it's addictive haha I even singing your "chicken at MAC" and "happy fucking v-day". Your two smoky eyes' videos are bomb (and I've tried, it's amazing) you along with Lisa Eldridge are the proper source of smoky eye tutorial (you're the bold version when Lisa is the soft version). I also enjoy your reviews especially your MAC series but previously little bit sad because I thought you were in long hiatus. But now I'm excited because you're back. I'm so grateful to find underrated makeup education channel (and person) like you. Have a good day, take care and drive safe
Safira Ssi Thank you so much! I’m glad you’ve found videos that are helpful and also entertaining too! That makes me happy! Thank you for commenting and sharing all that! 🤗🤗🤗
I think I told you this before but your first MAC foundation guide saved my life when I first started working at MAC! They didn't give any sort of training so I had to go online to learn about the products, and I used your guide as reference. Thankfully I actually have similar opinions to yours when it comes to their foundations! I also don't like studio sculpt at all, I hate the texture, but I don't think MAC discontinues it because for some reason it has a cult following. It's strangely a very popular foundation, a lot of people repurchase it and have it as their holy grail, at least it's what my ex colleagues tell me!
I'm not familiar with all of their new foundations. but I've tried a couple. I didn't like the water weight foundation, I'm more of a dry skin type and still it just feels greasy on my skin. I like the look of it, but it's just so uncomfortable. Strangely the pro longwear nourishing allthough it is indeed long lasting makes my skin produce copious amounts of oil throughout the day, I think my dehydrated skin doesn't deal well with anything that's made to be long lasting. It just starts freaking out and producing oil like crazy! Mineralize I think is super glittery to be honest, it has so much shimmer in it.
My favourites are also studio fix fluid and face & body. I do like MAC full coverage as well, thinned out it just looks beautiful! I like classic wax-based cream foundations. Do I want to try the next to nothing powder? I've been really interested in it since it came out. I was thinking about getting a darker colour to use as bronzer.
Sorry I'm commenting as I watch the video XD I really liked the fortified skin enhancers, I had them in my pro kit and everything. I hated the CC creams! The BB cream I haven't tried but all my friends at MAC hate it! I remember I liked the Studio Tech, I never noticed it go powdery to be honest, I didn't even realise that's what it was supposed to do. It was fine. I really liked it on combo to oily dark to deep skintones.
dapperfish I I love studio sculpt. I'm one of the cult followers. 😂 it sued to be my go to foundation, it photograph beautifully.. But now im getting older and my skin getting dryer, i find it too heavy and drying.. Now adays my go to is the one with dropper.. Whatever the name is😅.. What do you think about the mineralize foundation?
I like all the comments! Thank you for sharing all of this! It was a little bit of a “throwback” to talk about all these haha! It was fun.
I watched that first MAC foundations video when I started working at MAC too 😂
I was soooo lost back then, especially because I didn’t own a lot of MAC stuff at the time and most foundations looks really crappy on me for some reason... which is very sad when you are a makeup artist :p
Having played with them a lot now, I do really like the studio tech for dark skin and I really wished that I could try it on my very difficult skin, but unfortunately, it doesn’t come in my shade (I’m too pale) and I like Studio Sculpt a lot too, I think it gives a really nice (quite full) coverage and finish and I use it on set a lot when I want something really flawless and perfect, and that one even looks good on me !
BUT....... it breaks me out 😭
I think I’m cursed... :p
I missed you so much. You are one of fav og youtubers. You were such a big help for me years ago.
That's so sweet. Thank you. So every time someone posts a comment about how they miss me, I always ask them where I have been because I still have content all over the place. Nobody EVER answers. Don't let me down! Be different than everyone else! Do you just watch the makeup videos and miss the others or does UA-cam not notify you when I upload or am I just that addictive that you miss me even when I upload regularly? I'm being a smart ass but I'm also serious. I'd love to know! This is helpful information for me! :)
Dustin Hunter hahaha. I get it. so it’s a little bit of both. I think I when I started watching you it was back in 2010-2011. I wanted to know everything makeup. And you kept popping up. I swear every time you made a Mac video I went out and tested and tried everything. And I did notice that you started uploading more this year. And I gotta say I just miss the old UA-cam when people just wanted to help others. But my notifications are on and I can’t wait for more!!!!
brnprettiegrl88 Haha Thank you! Yes the atmosphere has changed a lot over the years. It’s less about learning and sharing information for a lot of people - I think that content is still there somewhat but UA-cam doesn’t promote it as heavily as stuff that’s more over the top - a lot of folks have left, it’s more difficult these days to find your voice on here. I take breaks when I want to and have just started uploaded when I want about whatever I want and only doing it if I enjoy it. Much better this way! Thank you!
So immensely helpful. Thank you for being so thorough
These are never long enough! Hahaha Greta video Dustin!
Who’s Greta? LOL My phone autocorrects the stupidest shit! LOL Thank you 🤗
Omg the fridge tip!! I have a weakness for foundations so will defs be trying this!!
I thought I had tried every method of applying my MAC Face & Body (hands, multiple brushes, beauty blender, apply, buff, repeat, etc...) and it just hadn't been love as of yet. I knew I was missing something. I tried your method yesterday and found the magic of this foundation. I knew I would love it once the mystery was decoded. I generally prefer my makeup to have a no-makeup, natural look to it and this is now perfect; especially for summer in the desert southwest. I finally got enough coverage and kept the appearance of skin that I prefer. Thanks, Dustin!
That’s wonderful! It’s so great when you recommend something and someone reports back that it worked and you’re not crazy! Haha! Thank you! Glad it worked well for you! I think it’s much easier to apply that way. Whenever I see people on UA-cam say they are using it so they have to work quickly I always want to yell at the screen, “No you don’t! Stop!” Haha
I do not even want to think about how many studio fix powders i have gone through in my life!!
Your long videos are my favorite!
I'm glad! Thank you!
Great video Dustin!
Thank you for helping me with make up techniques and tricks
You are an awesome teacher
Blessings
JC

Omg I found your channel again after years
Thanks so much! I was so waiting for an updated video!! I actually bought the face and body because of you 😀 Best purchase!
Yay! I’m glad! Thank you!
I love the Nourishing Waterproof Foundation, Studio Fix Fluid and the Waterweight Foundation. MAC foundations have just worked for me lately. I'm oily skin and NC 15 to 20.
That is wonderful that they've been working for you. Thank you for sharing this and including your skin type - that's always helpful for people reading through comments!
Tech photos beautifully ...great video !! Commented twice ! Yay!!
thank god for Dustin hunter!!!!! just in time for me to build my kit, you are truly awesome
It seems a little conceited loving a comment like that haha but thank you! I'm glad this is helpful to you!
Dustin Hunter well I've been watching your videos for a couple of years now and I can honestly say that you are one of the best makeup artists on UA-cam,I find all your videos super helpful from the time I got into makeup,it's also great to see a makeup artist on UA-cam that's not pushing products they are affiliated with you clearly do this for the love of makeup and we love seeing that.
Love your MAC videos...keep them coming
Oh YOU'RE the one ;) Haha! Thank you very much! This was fun to film!
I am sitting down and here for this. 💜💜💜💜💜
Videos like these are what made me subscribe in the first place 😊
This video was extremely helpful. Thank you!
Chrissy Hanson Thank you! I’m glad!
I like you. This was super informative and helpful. New subbie💜💜
Ahhh your soothing voice and pretty face was much needed after today. Thanks for this
Buy my album? Hahahaha! Seriously though... then you can listen to me whenever ;) LOL! THANK YOU VERY MUCH! That's really kind of you to say and always makes me smile to know that something I did helped someone's day - especially in the way you describe :)
I'd really like to see M.A.C extend their Pro Longwear Foundation shade range. I'm pretty light and I couldn't get a proper color match in this item. Great video Dustin ! I've seen your past overviews of M.A.C foundations :)
So informative. Thanks a lot.
I used to love your (brand) foundation guides back in the day, and it's awesome to finally see you do an updated one. May I request you do a foundation guide of a cruelty-free brand if you plan on making another? I hope you're doing well. :)
Thank you! Where do you get your information on what brands are cruelty free and what ones aren't? Do you define cruelty free as vegan as well or just companies who don't test on animals? I find that it's a tricky area with a lot of... opinionated people (see what I did there, how I didn't say aggressive judgemental buttheads? LOL!) Seriously though, I have thought about it before but I don't want to get it wrong, come off like I don't know what I'm talking about or piss viewers off. It's not my area of expertise and there are plenty of UA-camrs who focus on that so I've just let them be. Side note: Have I ever told the story about making everyone in PR at L'Oreal fall silent when mentioned animal testing after they bought Urban Decay? Not my most delicate moment but I imagine you would probably laugh! LOL!
I can definitely understand not wanting to touch on the whole cruelty-free debate in fear of offending or coming across these 'opinionated' individuals (aka rude butts).
I myself only buy within companies (with parent companies) who don't test on animals, but personally I view cruelty free as a spectrum. If I were to get deep into it, in theory it's almost impossible to live 'cruelty-free' as you could argue that many companies source ingredients, packaging, etc from places or in ways that can contribute to environmental damage, unfair work conditions/pay, and the list goes on. But I imagine that's probably not the can of worms you were asking to open in your questions, haha.
Long story short, it's pretty impossible to be perfect, so don't stress too much, and I appreciate channels who include a cruelty free option, even if it's owned by a testing company or sells in China. In my eyes it opens the conversation and helps direct people in the right direction. My main go-to website is cruelty free kitty. From memory they personally email HEAPS of companies asking for personal statements on the status of their cruelty free...ness, whether they sell in China, whether they are owned by a parent company, are any or all their products vegan, what organisations they are certified by, and so on. That way you can personally determine whether that companies practices align with your ethics, as opposed to just checking the back of a bottle and calling it a day. I think if you're just transparent about the company's stance so your viewers can decide what to do with that information, instead of difinitively stating "X brand is/isn't cruelty free" in your videos, it can save your arse on the whole aggressive butts front.
Sorry if that all that info is way too intense! I also absolutely love the thought of a bunch of L'Oreal reps dumbfounded at that statement. Someone's gotta ask these questions! Thankyou for the response. :)
cheesecake This was all wonderful information! Thank you for sharing all of it! I like how you phrased it and I think I could tackle it that way. I also used the same site for my research as well so we are on the same page there! I’ll look into this more and consider it! Thank you! 🤗
Genius video! Thanks for this, so helpful. Can I now be greedy and hope for a concealer video? (Especially one about concealers for people with texture/fine lines under eyes? xo
Thank you! You can be as greedy as you want. Haha! I did a MAC concealer video years ago but I haven’t done much else. Something to consider!
Thank you so much, Dustin! Learned a lot!!! In future videos I would love to hear about color correcting ;)
I don’t bother with a lot of color correcting myself but I will take that note and consider it! Thank you!
I swear i was like : humm hubby and baby asleep and my feed is boring me... oh wait! I got a dustin video that I missed. Happy mood immediately 😁😁😉😉
It's been a while Justin, I'm happy to watch your video again. Mac Studio Fix Fluid is my fav too! I mix it with a bit of moisturizer because of my dry skin, and it still photographs beautifully
Thank you for sharing the tip!
Luna in the sea does it looks natural?
Super informative! Thanks 🙌🏼
This was so informative! Thank you!
Kelsey Leigh Thank you and you’re welcome!
I stopped using studio sculpt, and started using studio fix fluid. I love it😍
Chantia Calhoun Yay!
Loved this review.....very brainy 😉 Thank You!
You're welcome. I may be updating it this year because they have discontinued several and added a couple.
Missed that voice! 🎧
Thank you for another thorough video Dustin.
Thank you and you’re very welcome!
Hey, Dustin. I adore your MAC Powders video so of course I tuned in for this one. Could you answer a question about the Next to Nothing Powder/Pressed? How is it compared to the Mineralize Skinfinish Natural (coverage, finish, lasting power, oxidation, etc, anything else you can think of). Thanks!
Love ur video keep up the good work! And can u also discuss about the tones for every each skintone like the NC NW medium plus light plus so on and so forth thanks! Looking forward new subbie
Thank you! Read the description, there is some info there and links to a few videos that you will find helpful regarding color selection. Not everything is there but a lot of it is!
I love youuuuu I finally found my shade you helped me thank you 🌹🌹🌹🌹
I love Mac Match-master. It literally blends into my skin.
Forgive me being late to the party here but thank you! Your channel is what youtube should be all about Dustin- reviews and information I can Trust xxx
Annie Adaptogen Never too late to comment! Thank you so much!
Your first Mac overview was a life- ( and money-) saver back then.
In all those years I think I've kinda grown out of Mac tbh. It seems like for years they haven't really come up with anything worthwhile and I've moved on to a lot of better foundations. I still keep F&B (in the fridge where it lasted years beyond its expiration date - I know, disgusting) because it works wonders on my legs or when I know I'm going to sweat a lot.
Cheers
What are your favorite foundations now? Share! I would love to know! :)
Dustin Hunter as I've matured, I've come to terms with my extremely oily skin and the fact that no amount of foundation and powder will make my face matt. So I try to rock the shine 😁
My holy grail is the very cheap Catrice HD foundation. Some days I like UD Naked Skin but after 8 hrs it separates. And when I have little to cover up I use the Bare Minerals Original
The shade intelligence technology on the matchmaster works wonders on me!!
Wow I just clicked your video from recommendations , and your voice is magical ! Soo soothing oh my god not even listening to what you saying
Candy R Haha! Thank you xoxo Buy my music then? Haha! Plug plug! Dustin Hunter on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, etc. 🤭🤗
Thanks ,it’s so helpful 😊
I just bought a bottle of Studio Fix with SPF as a blind buy NC15. Good thing l decided to go paler, as l have combination to oily skin. Haven't tried it yet. So good to know it looks good on 📷. I want to be photogenic like you too, Mr Hunter! It's still untouched. We'll see how it goes!
Wow thanks for the reviews 🤗😍
Excellent guide, thank you!! I'm always getting the studio fix fluid mixed up with the studio waterweight and think the water weight is what I wantl..Thanks again. Watching for a second time☺
beatnick92 You’re welcome! I’m glad this is helpful!
Teach, this is what we are missing. ❤️
Haha! Thank you! LOVE your comments!
Wow, I remember watching your old vid on MAC foundations from like 6-7 years ago? Thanks for the update, even though I never did and never will buy any foundation, I just love listening to you talk :D (and sing...) #benediction :D
8 years ago! RIGHT?! WHAT?! Never say never? Haha! Thank you! I'm plugging away on a new album!
I loathe fix fluid, the waterproof and match master, I’m shocked that you don’t like studio sculp!! 😱 I love it, also face and body it’s one of my favorites ever 💖
Great video! Love your brand summary vids! Oh studio tech 😂😂 I used to use this religiously coz I couldn't get my hands on the full coverage when I had no idea how to use makeup properly and just wanted it to blank my entire face out lol. Oh the memories....
Might have a look at that next to nothing powder..... 🤔 🤔
Haha! I actually really like the powder and I was surprised that I did! Total shock. Love it though.
Video is really helpful 👌👌
New to Mac, would like to know what would you set ssf with?( something that has no flashback please)I have the ssf powder foundation but was told that it would cause foundation to "cake up". I dont like loose setting powders (ex: coverfx) because they immediately cake my under eye.
Fantastic video
Amazing & helpful 👏☺
I’m watching this video again because I’m shopping for a new foundation and thought I would go try MAC again. I was really interested in the Studio Tech and wanted to know what kind of feel, coverage etc. it gives. Too bad you hate it because you didn’t cover a lot of its characteristics but you did say it would work well probably for an oily skin type which I am. I just hope it doesn’t oxidize as much as the Studio Fix.
1 minute in and lovin it!
That's what he said? No... no that's not right. LOL
LOL LOL LOL...ooopsie!!
My skin is bit dry. Which foundation will be better for university use .?
Can you recommend good foundation please?
My skin is white and I’m just trying to find a shade match before I buy!! This helped me a lot figuring out my shade range and love how put in which ones you use and what the formulas are used for🔥⭐️💥
Thank you for taking the time to comment! I’m so glad this was helpful :)
8 seconds in. Me: clicks like
Ah hour later. Me: Hearts that comment.
Always a pleasure...
solid review. informative.
9razzler9 Thank you!
What about the Mac prolong wear Pressed powder?
I hit play on this video to go to sleep (because...your voice), but ended up watching anyway (because...you).
That's so cute! HAHA! Thank you!
I have bit white skin but also have light dark spots on skin so which foundation will be better? Plz help
Great video!
Thank you!
If I wear NC47 in the mac prolong wear waterproof would I be the same color in the regular prolong wear?
Thank you for your so thorough review. What is your favorite brush to apply the Next to Nothing Powder/Pressed? Hope it’s not a MAC brush. I’ve been sadly losing my admiration for their brushes lately.
Any old brush will do really. I’ve used powder brushes, fan brushes, sponges, even fingers in a pinch.
Plz suggest foundation which doesn't oxidise with oily skin
beautiful video! I also used macs foundation in my videos, it’s bomb af🌹
Studio fix fluid is silicone based? Or water based?
Hi this is a very useful video. Thanks you so much for making it. I have a question though. I have combo skin (oily on the T zone and around my nostrils with dry patches on my cheeks) so its very confusing for me to chose the right MAC foundation. I do not have major acne scars or any skin concerns to cover up so i love a natural light to medium coverage foundation that can even out my skin. Which MAC foundation do you recommend? Any suggestions are welcomed! Thank you!
Cathy N Hi! Combination skin like that is probably the most normal skin type. Any one of these would be fine but my favorite for lighter coverage is still going to be Face & Body. That’s MY favorite though. There is a lot of information in the description area and links to other videos that will help answer some of your questions. Check that out too.
I love how well you know your stuff! I have been afraid of mac foundation after a mortifying experience I had at a counter in Ireland. A lady there tried some foundations on me to see what would work. It showed up and seemingly *created* dryness where there wasn't! It was so awful looking, she sort of frowned and looked perplexed and looked at me like there was something wrong with me that it looked so bad on me! lol
I don't often see dryness without makeup, it's just so many products seem to highlight it - must be my weird rosacea skin.
Haha! That’s terrible! I don’t see dry patches on my skin usually unless I apply foundation - that will highlight the dryness. A good chemical (AHA) exfoliating will usually kick that in the butt for me!
oh, I need to investigate if this is allowed on my rosacea skin. Thanks fella!
