Guinea Pig Bedding can be a mystery to a lot of people. Which is the best guinea pig bedding to use? It really depends on you and what your life is like. There ARE SOME BAD CHOICES, like Cedar wood shavings. Cedar can cause respiratory problems. Paper bedding is expensive and gross smelling after it gets wet, and puppy pads and towels can't really do an effective job, especially with lots of piggies. So what is the right choice for you? Watch me clean my cages that use different types of bedding. See what it takes, and discover the best one for you. I use fleece blankets I bought from Walmart and then incontinence pads for underneath. Sweep out once a day and change the fleece/pads once a week. Works great for my two pigs and much less waste than shavings.

I have 4 boys (Archie/Ernie/Opossum/Bear) who refuse to bond, so we just keep them as safe by making them cage-neighbors instead. Since they all have their own cages, changing and cleaning their bedding is a lot. It takes a real love to clean as you are supposed to, but nothing makes me happier than watching them popcorn on fresh bedding :)

Try puting news paper down then your pine shavings. That way when you clean, just roll up the paper.

We only have one cage(2x6 grid) with 3 pigs, so fleece is great! We have 3 guinea dad liners with pockets and 3 guinea dad liners without pockets, a whole bunch of big pee pads and a bunch of water bottle drip pads. I can usually go a week before I have to wash all the pee pads and I cycle out the guinea dad liners every 3-4 days. We love our piggies!

    Your piggies are so cute!
Three words for people using fleece for their guineas: PET LAUNDRY BAGS. 👍 You can get zip up pet laundry fabric wash bags on Ebay and Amazon, search for “pet laundry wash bag”. They come in jumbo sizes. Shake off fleece, put your fleece inside the bags before putting in machine and zip up, to prevent your washing machine becoming clogged with hair and hay (hair can actually clog up the inner pipes of your machine and break it!) Best purchase ever!

I prefer fleece but i have a front loading heavy duty washer a nd dryer. For sure i am constantly washing but i dont mind. I have learned to sew as well because like you said you never have enough. I sweep out the cage twice a day so it always looks clean. I dont have wet spots because i use the smaller pads all around. I have long haired guinea pigs so i find shavings get stuck in their coat. I am also 68 years old so lugging pine shavings into the house is not easy. I enjoy the whole process of caring for them though.

I am so glad that you give the pros and cons to fleece and shavings. Most people seem pro fleece but I am not a fleece person and am relieved you don't act like fleece is the best. Fleece looks gross fast with the hair and poo. I use kiln dried pine and only mess with cages 1x a week which is better than daily sweeping or vacuuming of fleece. Plus I feel gross about pee and stuff in washing machine. I wish I didn't care but I do.. As a busy mom, I prefer wood shavings which is 1x week change vs fleece which would be daily spot clean and weekly laundry on top of a household of 5 laundry lol!

I have two boars and use two sets of the guinea dad fleece. That works pretty well for 3 days before a cleaning. In their houses I lay extra layers of fleece which I replace before bedtime. After breakfast is the daily spot cleaning with a small pan and/or dust devil.
I find the most annoying thing about fleece is hay getting stuck in it. So now I have a chloroplast tray under the hay filled with paper bedding and it catches the hay. Anything leftover can just be sweeped.
Also, I love what you said about doing it because you love them doesn't seem like a chore. I LOVE it when my pigs settle in for a nap in a fresh, beautiful cage. 😊

I recomend cotton towels in the summer instead of fleece, cause it's just too hot for fleece in California in the summer. I save the fleece for the fall and winter months. Big lots has some large cotton towels and really nice solid colors for only 6.00 that I recently have bought last week that I recomend . Bought the noodle mats that match the towels for the loft/kitchen area there too.

I love Tractor supply pine shavings!! Best price and never had any problems with it like i have had with paper bedding, fleece and Aspen. I love that people use fleece, its so pretty and comfy but i absolutely HATE IT! I guess im just a shavings person, sorry fleece lovers! I love you guys though!!!! I also get huge 50 pound bales of timothy grass there too. Only $25. I have 6 piggies because my girls did not get along. Two were emergency rescues I took since I had the space. I have two groups of three in a divided c&c 3x5 plus a protected outdoor run. Thank you so much Scotty for all the priceless info!!! I actually caught a hormone issue in one of my girls because of the Saskia videos about the crusty nipples. I noticed it right away!!! You all are amazing!!! Love the piggie community 💕

Yeah I'm old-school when it comes to bedding. I can't abide fleece because I don't want them running around on their pellets and getting them mashed between their claws and gross pee spots all over. I'd rather spend the extra money on a good supply of shavings and hay than spend all my spare time doing laundry. Give them a few soft rags to lay on and they are fine. Pigs only really care about food, water, hideys and treats, not running around on an extra-soft surface.

I have three guinea pigs. Two parents and one young one - he was left over from an accidental litter. (Store told me the mum was a he). Now I know how to sex them. I use fleece bedding for the three cages, shake the poops and discarded hay out every morning and sometimes late afternoon. I wash the fleece with detergent and vinegar once per week. One is a guineadad pad, the other two were homemade from fleece blankets and a moving pad I happened to have.
The father and son did not get along, so I had to have three cages. Drying takes the longest amount of time- I hang dry outside for about an hour or two, squeeze water out occasionally, then dry in dryer for somewhere around 60 minutes (it’s an old dryer).
I let them have outside time a few times a week in appropriate weather with a c&c cage and rubber matting from harbor freight plus their gear.
I should add I live in a tiny house so their cages are in a row on the bottom bunk of my bunkbed. 😜

Btw, you can spot clean the cages with shavings, everyday just look for the areas where they poop alot, or where it's wet, and then add a handful more of bedding. It's easier to do a full clean, when it's ready for it, and it will keep the piggies from walking all over their poops!

Great video! I've learned so much from watching you & Saska's channels😁 I used to use pine bedding when I had two pigs & was brand new to it all but I never knew about spraying it to keep the dust down or pressing it down like that. It seems like that would keep it in place better so the urine don't get on every inch. We switched to fleece & expanded so much when I got a 3rd pig. It's a lot easier to clean up & definitely not as much trash but I only have two huge fleece liners that I sewed a plastic-like rug on the back to trap the urine. Im thinking about using pine & fleece because I miss my piggies fur smelling nice all the time & I'm sure they miss burrowing in it haha!
Thanks so much for always providing the best advice, wishing you & your sweet animals all the best❤️

Morning to you Scotty! I really appreciate this video. Plan to purchase two little sows sometime this autumn, and watching your videos is helping me get things right the first time around, I hope. I have a 2x4 cage from guineapigcages. Also got a cavy bistro to use in the cage. The only space I will have for the pigs is in my bedroom, so I am planning on fleece, as I think the shavings might cause too much of a mess. Problem with fleece is having to do laundry at laundromat........ So it’s a bit of a dilemma. Maybe having three liners, along with pee pads, so I would only have to wash once every other week. Doing so in order to cut down on laundromat cost... I appreciated your comment about not being impressed with people who have 100 pigs. Two will be my limit! Hoping for the best! Hi Scott. We recently changed from bedding to felt blankets with pee pee pads underneath for protection. Also have bedding in a small litter box and it's working. We change out every other day the soiled areas and wash the fleece. It's working great. We have a new Milwaukee cage too. 😊

I have tried both shavings and fleece and currently have permanently settled on fleece flippers with three sizes of pee pads (many) and 1x2's that I use around the cage over the 2x5's in the heavier areas. The double loft has custom fleece liners. I cycle everything out every 4 days except I change pads often. A hint to stay much more odor free; use Arm and Hammer Free liquid detergent as it already has the baking soda in it that really helps to make the bedding smell fresh and clean.

We make our own fleece liners using fleece uhaul blankets and water proof pads. We change our big pads 2-3 times a week and we change small ones as needed when they get really wet. We clean poop and soiled hay 1-2 times a day. We have 8 piggies. A group of 4 girls and 2 separate pairs of males.

I agree the Guinea Dad fleece is first class. I shakes out and washes out better than regular fleece but it is expensive. I use the EZwhelp pee pads in different sizes also. They are a good second layer or in carriers too. These are not too expensive and wash and wear well. Someday hopefully I will have two full sets of Guinea Dad and spares.

Very informative video thank you. I have my guinea pigs on fleece ( ikea bath mats) in summer in the c&c cage.works great but I sweep up poops every morning and night. Once a week wash the mats. Our heating and cooling ceased so had to put my boys back into the original cage. I have been using back to nature on bottom 2 inches and wood shavings on top 2 inches. I still clean morning and night , I remove wet wood chips and collect all poop and uneaten food scraps night and day. It keeps the cage clean and no smells. My two boys have turned one , so I can hear more rumber strutting and chasing going on. I clean the entire cage once every 9 days. The general clean and scoop out means the wood chips go down, I even top it up in places. My guinea pigs love a clean cage . The pop all over the place. Thanks again for your wonderful videos. My two boys have a circus tent made of fleece that keeps them cozy, they pee every where in these and poo inside. So these get washed weekly. They seem to make the most smell. I think both methods are great but they each have to be daily maintained.

I started out with pine bedding with my 2 girls and I just found it was very costly and smelled terrible no matter how much I used. I now have 5 piggies, 3 girls and 2 boys and I switched to fleece and the best method I found was lay puppy training pads in the coroplast, fleece on top of that and I use bath rugs under their hideys. Then about 2 times a day I will spot clean and then change the pads and fleece on the weekends

It may seem weird but I do both. I put fleece in the middle and paper bedding on the ends where they pee and poop the most. I put hay on they ends of the cage so that is really the only place that has alot of pre and poop. That way they have the soft comfort and I can clean the ends every couple days

I change out the pads everyday, main fleece every 4 days. I wait until I get a pile of fleece to do a load. Probably 2 changes of fleece.

Really good info, Scott. I used aspen shavings for about 4 years before switching to Guineadad fleece. I have a 2X6 C&C with three girls. Except for doing laundry all the time, I found both types to be about the same amount of labor. The difference being where you spend your time. The big difference I noticed was the smell. As you pointed out, wood shavings act as a natural deodorant on the urine where fleece doesn’t. The shavings are also a bit abrasive and help keep piggie butts cleaner and less smelly (they seem to spend a lot of time dragging their bums around.)

It’s all trial and error what works for you! I have 2 girls in a 2x3 cage with a 1x2 loft. I have 3 fleece liners that I swap out once a week. The litter pan gets changed about every other day. I tried to make the loft the kitchen, but one of my girls in not fond of going up the ramp so I will be switching to fleece in the loft as well. I’ve liked pelleted pine for my litter pan because it is so economical, but I’ve been considering switching to carefresh because of the dust.

Hi Scotty, we are new piggy parents and have been watching your videos non stop.
We have a pair of piggys. Father and son. We are using Fleece handmade sewn by the Mrs. She uses u-haul for the middle. We looked at Guinea Dad fleece but it is on the expensive side. So it's cheaper for us to make multiple for the price of one Guinea Dad. Well have to save up for special occasions pads from them. The Mrs. Has been finding remnents of fleece at the goodwill as well as fleece blankets to use over the u-haul pads. So tell your viewer's that tip.
But my real question is in our updated piggy kitchen, we have a large tray and have customed fleece to put over the litter tray. We heard about these Pelletized bedding you can buy in bulk at Tractor Supply Co. 40 lbs for $6.29. (green colored sack)
It says it is biodegradable with no additives, chemicals, or perfumes. The people on our FB C&C cage group say it's great for piggys, absorbs the pee and ordor.
But it hard to walk on. And only a few have said they chewed it. That's what worries us!!!!
I am interested in your thoughts on this and if it's safe to use?
We threw out the Vitamin C drops for the water bottles and purchased the Oxbow natural science "C" cookie instead and they're eating it daily. Thanks for all you do 👫

I have 7 guinea pigs (Im a sucker for a pig in need) and I have found it best to use fleece. I have 4 pigs in a 13 x 2 grid cage and have 1 end, about 2 grids long of a "kitchen" space that I use Aspen shavings. 4 pigs tend to drain the water bottles pretty quick and the fleece gets gross quick. I have a ton of the $2.50 walmart fleece throws and I just fold them up to fit the cage and change them out every day. I do a lot of pig laundry but it works out for me.

I have 3 midwest piggie cages two attached for my girls 5 girls and one seperate for my boy. I have a layer of Newspaper with a layer of puppy pads then 2-3 inches of pine shavings. The pads make cleaning the cages easier,I just roll the shavings up, easy. I did make a futile attempt to compost the shavings but too much for the area I had to compost in. For three cages it takes about 20-30 minutes. The best place for shavings I've found in PA-white bag at Tractor Supply, $5.99.
