- We’ve been using FLEECE LINERS for our GUINEA PIGS for several years and thought we’d try another type of BEDDING to see how they COMPARE. In this video we’re testing PINE BEDDING to find out if we and our #guineapigs like it more than the FLEECE LINERS. See how our cage set up now looks with the new PINE WOOD SHAVINGS. I use a mixture of both. I use aubiose under their hay area where there's loads of room for all 3 to gather, and eat/burrow/toilet and relax. I put a huge pile in there along with wooden hayracks that doesn't allow any soiling. The fleece area is soft and cozy and they do use the pockets to hide and bridges for fun/zoomies/ hiding. I'm lucky enough to wash my fleeces/dry them elsewhere in the same day (Sshhh!🤫) 😂. I use a pet laundry bag, they're a god-send!

There's a great satisfaction in seeing them all pop-corning! Happy, Healthy piggies ! 😁Up-date: New wooden piggie home now built! 😀 Wow! I can't believe the difference! And why it's taken so long for the light-bulb moment!!🤣. It's what we would call 'kerb appeal' when viewing a new house! 🏠👍. My piggies have really settled in and I'm thrilled with it myself! 😁. I tried fleece for quite a while and liked the softness but found that their wee would sit on top for too long, took too long to dry during spot cleans and smelt quite badly of urine. Using carefresh now and I honestly prefer it.
Not to mention having to machine wash it
if the pee was sitting on top of it that means your fleece was not wicked properly. and if it smelled of urine that also means you were not cleaning it enough, as that is not normal. i am unsure of what you mean by "took too long to dry during spot cleans" as spot cleans are typically just cleaning up hay and poop off the surface of the fleece.

Until i got my c&c cage I used to have at least 3 bags of used shavings. Used to fill my bin up! Have had the 5x2 c&c since February and always used fleece as i thought it would be cheaper. I would use loads of shavings and the urine would stain the correx i thought. Not too bad with fleece, the urine scale sits on the top
It's good to hear other peoples experiences of the different bedding options so thank you for your feedback :) There are definitely pros and cons with all bedding. You do get a lot of waste with the disposable ones but fleece liners require a lot of washing and we've found and are higher maintenance when it comes to cleaning.
@@GuineaPiggles true. My zipped bag i put the dirty fleece in to wash, came undone in washing machine early! What a mess! At least the dryer removes a lot of the hair and dander!
I use fleece liners on the bottom of my cage and paper based mixed with kiln dried pine on the loft
It seems that quite a few people like to use both but for different areas of their guinea pigs cage - it's a good compromise :) Do you find a mix of shavings and paper is more absorbent than shavings alone?
Guinea Piggles I’m not actually sure, but I find it really fun to mix them together 😂 I also got this fun blue bedding and it lasts longer if it’s mixed in.
I think some people may mix them together too because paper bedding can work out quite expensive so mixing together is a bit more economical - we will have to try out some mixes and see how they work too! With coloured bedding, we don't usually recommend it but it's worth checking that the colours are natural because they do sometimes try and eat bedding :)
Guinea Piggles actually, colored bedding is completely safe!! It’s only scented that can be an issue.

I always thought pine wasn’t a good choice because of the naturally occurring resins in it, although the one used in the video is new and improved. Aspen is supposed to have less dust in it, so, it might be even better. Is paper-based bedding a good option? Informative video, and such beautiful piggies! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Pine bedding is fine providing it is Kiln Dried. The drying process removes the aromatic oils that are toxic to guinea pigs. We will also be testing Aspen and paper bedding so look out for these videos that are coming soon but yes, these are both good options too. I used to use carefresh litter; it’s soft, compostable and made of recycled paper.
Carefresh paper bedding is another popular bedding but it can be more expensive. Pine shavings are cheaper and they're a good substrate providing they're kiln dried. We have more info on guinea pig beddings here www.guineapiggles.com/guinea-pig-bedding/

I use a mix of fleece bedding and kiln-dried pine or aspen in my c and c cages. I made a very big coroplast tray, and put the shavings in, then do fleece in the rest of the cage. Right around the coroplast tray some shavings come out as the piggies go in and out, but not too much, it's pretty easy to get up off the fleece. I also use a few one by two fleece liners over the main liner in the rest of the cage, which is full fleece, and potty pads under the hidey houses. It's still alot of work, although they do about 2 thirds of their pee and pooping in the large tray with the bedding, because they have their hay there. It's still a bit of work each evening, I spot clean the shavings area like you did, then brush off the fleece in the rest of the cage, and remove any damp pee pads or smaller liners. The main liner does last about 5 or 6 days though, but there's still alot of laundry because I have 2 cages about the size of yours. I'm thinking of trying to bond them into one herd, that way there's only one cage to clean, but I'll make it bigger for the 6 piggies. Now I have 3 in each cage. Great video! Thanks!
Thank you so much for your feedback - it's really useful to hear about other setups that work well. It's a good idea to combine shavings and fleece too. I think your idea of bonding the piggies into one big herd is a really good one - they can be so funny in larger groups and really entertaining to watch... often better than watching TV! For me it's the laundry that I find challenging so we'll test a few more beddings and will make a decision on one once we've tried them all :)
@@GuineaPiggles I'll let you know how the bonding goes, and boy, do I know about the laundry!! I do from 7 to 8 loads a week of piggy laundry, also because I have 2 very large enclosures. Then every other week I wash about 5 large liners, usually at my local laundromat, so it's definitely alot of wash!
What brand of kiln-dried pine shavings is dust extracted? I have been doing research and I cannot find any that says the dust is extracted.
i have pan liner with paper beding and hay. and my pig love it. and then have washable dog pads and fleece on the other side. so i can get away with washing every 2 weeks and spot cleaning daily to every few days depend on my work

Everyone seems to think fleece is cheaper because you re-use. But is it? If you factor the gallons of water, laundry soap, the constant sweeping (ok thats labor) it's really more expensive.
I def use fleece liners as shaving etc get stuck in my pigges long hair 🙈
I just had to ask a quick question are you supposed to change the set up of your guinea pigs cages I don’t know if that’s correct or not can somebody please answer thank you
We often change the setup of our guinea pig's cage and they really love to explore when we do this. But if you have a blind guinea pig, changing the setup is not a good idea.

We got it from Amazon UK but I'm not sure if they're available at the moment - they seem to go in and out of stock a bit! They're the Resch brand which are really well made items.
In my opinion I like fleece more cuz I did try out bedding but it was too messy because the room ha carpet and my long hair had got it stuck in her hair and yes this is just my opinion:)🐹
Hi Hayley, lots of people prefer fleece and I've noticed people have a bit of a love/hate relationship when it comes to different beddings! Some love fleece and some hate it and the same goes for the shavings :) It's really down to what works best for you and your piggies :)

Shavings are definitely a more natural type of bedding for them and our guinea pigs seem to love them! We'll be testing paper bedding and a few others too so keep a look out for new videos!

If the pine shavings are kiln dried and not dusty they are safe to use with guinea pigs.
They use pine with small animal babies. Chickens rabbits etc my hamster doing just fine right now

If it's kiln dried then it's ok because this process removes the dangerous oils :). It should also be dust extracted as the dust is dangerous to piggies.

I’ve been using kiln dried pine bedding for 2 weeks now with my rabbit and i have NO problems. I don’t know what your talking about that kiln dried pine is bad.
