    Going along with the first point, I think it's important to not beat yourself up over mistakes you've made in the past. I've had pigs for thirty years, and a lot of care standards that were acceptable back then would (rightfully) be seen as abusive now. I feel awful for those pigs, but we did the best we could with the very limited information we had available. But I've been learning and becoming a better piggie owner/servant ever since, and I'm still learning new things. You can't undo the mistakes of the past, but you can keep learning so you can to give your piggies a better future!

    Great advice. We got ours on a whim (from a pet shop 🙄). Wish I'd watched something like this first. It's been a slog, we've had to work for a year to gain their trust but it's been worth it, watching them change from hiding every time we entered the room (or even running if we so much as moved an arm or a leg!) into now being 2 confident boys who sleep out in the open with their eyes fully closed. They're particularly messy and need spot cleaning about twice a day, get through tons of hay (my missus complains I spend more on them than I do on either her or me (new top for me or new fleece for them? The fleece wins, obviously 😂). They drive us crazy with constant bickering but we wouldn't be without them. Don't be like us, learn before you buy!

    Thank you for speaking up for piggies! It's heartbreaking when people go "it's just a guinea pig" when actually, they mean the world to us. I love to see Pipsqueak keep this possessive little paw on the stem towards the end of the video, as if to say "don't take this away, I'm eating all of that!".

    Another great video, Scotty! Just the right amount of information for a prospective owner. Another suggestion is to determine whether you are allergic to hay BEfore you adopt a piggy. My final suggestion is to volunteer at a rescue for awhile if you are lucky enough to have one nearby. Not only will you discover whether guinea pigs are really for you, you will also learn a lot, make friends with others, as well as help the rescue a lot. Best of luck, everyone!

    I recently adopted 2 sows from a local rescue shelter and one of them had upper respiratory infection I noticed the next day, and the other one had mites and ringworm ☹️ thankfully I took the sick one to the vet and have been giving her antibiotics, and gave the treatment baths and ivermectin to the other one seems to be working well. Great job Scotty! Number 1 is 💯 true because of an experience I had a few years back with giving liquid vitamin c and scurvy. I noticed one day, one of my gps was dragging her hind legs and I had no idea why. At that time, I had been giving my 4 gps liquid vitamin c though their water bottles because that was what was recommended to me. She was eating and drinking just fine, just dragging her legs. I brought her to a vet (not the current vet I go to now) and she thought my gp had broken her spine, suggesting I put her down to put her out of misery and that x-ray might not be able to show if her spine was truly broken. Instinct just told me not to put her down so I took my gp home and never went back to that vet. Seeing that my gp was still acting like a normal gp despite dragging her legs, I switched to those Oxbow Vitamin C pellet along with some green bell peppers other vitamin c rich veggie/fruits, and just as suddenly, started using her hind legs again. So yes, keep learning, be open minded and most importantly, continue to be committed, even if you don't get it right the first time ❤️

    I do feel bad about not getting them from a rescue but they’re from a lovely lady who loves her animals and they are already a bonded pair as they were from the same mother.

    I think all beings coming into our lifes are divinely orcestrated to be there. And that this is the case with everyone entering our paths through life. Free will, yes, but also predestination. No coincidence, no chance. Reincarnation. Keys everywhere if looking. Lessons in love, love as frequencies to adjust the balance in every interaction. Romantic and idealistic, my point of view, I know. But my Guineapigs, my 'animals' are my masters. I have to listen and learn.

Hay rack, lyso wipes, bags of soft bedding, fleece, bottle of water lots and lots and lots of pallet and hay and $25 gift card on any groceries. I was set! And the guinea piggies got all they Have the following wheek! So they were set for months!

    Pine shavings? I thought aspen was better? What say you pine vs. aspen. I had a Uromastyx lizard for 13 years, and he meant the world to me. People say "It's just a lizard". NO. Also, thank you for the list of veterinarians, you have not one, but two listed in my area, one of whom accepts CareCredit. Nice. If someone is looking for guinea pigs to adopt, check on Craigslist. I found my boys Vinnie and Comancho that came with a huge C&C cage, hay, pellets, even a little dustpan and broom. For FREE.She listed a re-homing fee, but that was to discourage snake owners.

    Last year for Christmas I made a comment that I would love to have a guinea pig to my surprise a few days later I got home and there was a guinea pig was so excited but a few days started watching videos found out you needed to have 2 so in period of 2 weeks I had 2 piggies man yes they are expensive and dirty my piggies have almost a whole room for themselves I clean every day they always hungry they eat more in a day than I eat in a week. I feel bad cuz I love them even though they only come to me when they want Food but sometimes I get frustrated because I have more animals and the piggies eat and require more than the other animals I have 2doggies 1cat 3turtles 1lizard. The only good thing is they like the dogs and cat but yes I can't hold them they won't let me even touch them after a year 😞

    Hi Scotty 😊 Thank you for some great videos!!! 🤩 I still have so much to learn! 🤓
    I have a complex question that I hope to share with you 🤞 Can you maybe elaborate on when you would separate two male piggies (or refer to a video regarding it)?
    I rescued two male piggies 9 months ago, one baby and one adult. Seeing now, they are not really the perfect couple, but I have grown quite attached to both of them 😏😌 Its not all bad, and they are desperate to get back together when separated. However, they have started biting each others butts, and the adult can be quite dominant. They have made scratches in the past (Mostly on the adult). They generally have their ups and downs, however currently it's mostly downs 😰. What would you do?
    Stay safe 🍀 Happy wishes from Denmark 🇩🇰

      If a piggy has bite wounds that bleed, then the bond is over. Are you able to increase their cage size? The more room 2 boys have, the happier they may be to get along

    • @sl9021
      @sl9021 3 роки тому

      @@karaleetrapp Thank you so much for replying ! 😊 No bleeding per se, but they have had scratches for example on their nose 😰 Mostly the adult. Is that still in the same category? They call out and bite/shake the cage when I separate them, so they are really hard to understand 😰
      Fortunatly, I learned quite early about the cage size, and they currently have 8 square meters (86 sq. Feet) to play on :3

    • @karaleetrapp
      @karaleetrapp 3 роки тому +1

      @@sl9021. Happy to help, no scratches are a little bit different. When 2 boys really don't like each other, they can cause massive bleeding wounds. I had 3 boys living together, when their hormones hit, 1 boy tore a big hole in the back right leg of another boy. My vet at the time put sutures in Zorros' wound as it was so close to his bottom, but removed them after 2 days as he chewed them

    • @sl9021
      @sl9021 3 роки тому

      @@karaleetrapp Thank you for sharing! I will keep a good eye on them to make sure they do not draw blood and open wounds. Hopefully he is just a hormonal teenager and they will get over it eventually 😌 Once again thank you so much for your help 🍀🌻 😊!!

    • @karaleetrapp
      @karaleetrapp 3 роки тому

      @@sl9021. If possible increase their cage size, that way your boys have more space to escape each other. The recommended size for 2 piggies is 8 square feet minimum, but I suggest to people that is ok for 2 girls, but boys need more. It sounds as if you are doing an awesome job and are very aware of possible problems.

      It's not impossible BUT it could definitely cause the boys to fight. If you have these piggies already all you can do is try introducing. You would absolutely need massive enclosure for it to be possible. If you already have said guinea pigs, are they housed near each other? Can the boys smell the girls already?

      @@MissUnderstood-yi1zm thank you for your response! & yes i have them already, they are a father & son duo currently living together, the older male was recently neutered & ideally we wanted to neuter the young one in the hope to reunite them both with the girls but I want to make sure this is possible before spending the money on neutering him. Also the boys are in a cage above the girls so I’m not sure if they can smell them.

      @@mstella5997 my pleasure! I love to help where & when I can. They definitely can smell them if they're that close. Im assuming that the girls presence hasn't caused an issue between them thus far which is good but I'll be honest with you. The reality is that NOTHING is guaranteed when it comes to bonding piggies. Could it be possible? Sure. However, it's not certain. Never is. It could even work at first then down the line it changes. Basically, go into it knowing that there's a huge possibility it won't be ok. Another thing is that if a rift does happen, you very likely won't be able to just take the boys out & put them back together again. So many things to consider here. Im sorry there's no definitive answer. I wish there was.

      Males can be difficult make sure they are a bonded pair or you have a rescue that can help you bond them. The fact is there's only a 20% chance any 2 males can be bonded and there's nothing you can do to make it better they have to decide. You can't get to males from different places and expect someone to be able to help you bond them. They either will or they won't.
