Not me watching with a huge grin because I remember the days when Scotty was not on board with fleece! Now look at you sitting in front of a sewing machine surrounded by a pile of fleece and showing us your fleece haul 😃
You can also use adult, leak proof, washable, pee pads that are used on your bed (incontinent pads) the trick is to remember that one side is non absorbent. A good way to remember is to use a solid color fleece on the bottom non absorbent side and a print on the top.
Another tip is to use about a cup or more of vinegar in your wash to help get rid of pee smell.
Finally, if you don't want to make small pads for under their beds or water bottles, pick up some dish drying mats at dollar tree and place in heavy soiled area like under pigloo, houses and water bottkes

Thank you for doing this Scotty. I have two comments: 1) I’d like to see a detailed explanation with examples of why we use the thinner fleeces and the purpose of the fleece: it wicks moisture away, it does not absorb it. The moisture goes through the fleece into the absorbent layer. I don’t think people understand this. And 2) a waterproof layer has a purpose. It makes fleece pads much more effective because the urine doesn’t go through the pad/liner into the liner below it. This keeps the base fleece clean and it doesn’t smell. It doesn’t make sense to me to use pee pads if the urine just soaks through it. I also use waterproof layer in my large base liner to protect the coroplast/canvas/wood cage bottom. I add the waterproof layer inside the bottom fleece layer. That’s my 2 cents.
We use a pet laundry bag to stop the machine clogging up.
You can also get a fleece brush, dustpan brush or a pet hair brush
I brush mine outside with a scrub brush
Great video Scotty! Having plenty of smaller pads that I can change out has made using fleece so easy for me. I also recommend that anyone using fleece buy a laundry washing bag to stop hay and hair from ruining your washing machine.
I love fleece because it saves me lots of money on wood shavings and my piggies love fleece too. My youngest boy will take a corner of the fleece and fold it to use it as a pillow in his hidey.

One of my boys did that as well, so I ended up sewing them some small pillows where they can rest their head while sleeping. They absolutely love it! :)

Hi Scotty - I have an indoor enclosure of 60 sq. ft. and used to use a blended 3 layer combo of both Aspen shavings and Timothy Hay/Orchard Grass. On a whim, I decided to change things up a little and give fleece a go...I haven't looked back! SO much easier to keep fresh and clean, dust-free and it's much cozier for my 3 piggies - they really like it! Seems to be a much better grip for their zoomies too! I've used fleece for years and love it. I use a adult reusable pee pad for the bed on the inside and it works great. Don't forget to wisk the fleece before use so it absorbs the pee.I use one for the whole bottom and two smaller ones for their hide and food area. We sweep and shake it out every day and clean it once a week. I use a detergent free of fabric softener etc and borax and white vinegar in the rinse cycle.

We use fleece in all 35 of our rescue cages! We use guineadad, small pads under houses and noodle rugs to swap every 2 days. We also use kitchens to “collect” the poop and pee :) it’s an investment upfront but saves money long term 🥰
Preach, Scotty! Preach! I wish I had seen something like this when I first became a guinea pig parent four years ago. You have described exactly what I have learned after a lot of (costly and messy) experimentation with towels, pee pads, paper bedding, etc. An overall absorbent fleece base layer covered with removable absorbent pads for the high-use areas = Success! I'm lucky enough to have a washer that has a pre-wash cycle that is a total lifesaver for guinea laundry. Great description and explanation!
I would love to sew my own fleece pads but I don't own a sewing machine or know anyone that does, I would have to do sew them by hand. Maybe you should start taking orders for making fleece pads for others, we could measure the size of our cages so they would fit. 😄

You are absolutely right fleece is addicting 😂 I rescued my 1st piggy started watching everyone & made 2 fleece trips I was like nooo more use what I got!🤣💙
Yup, that's a great way to use fleece liners. I'll make a large bottom liner, usually with a quilted mattress protector in the middle, and then I put a bunch of smaller and assorted sizes on top so that I can change the smaller ones out daily and change the bottom liner once a week. Works great. 😉
I make my own liners and I just make 2x2 and 1x2 pads and I piece them together based on how big the cage is. 2x5 gets two 2x2s and one 1x2....2x4 gets two 2x2 etc. And using a litterbox for a kitchen area keeps my fleece much cleaner. The litterbox has wood pellets under hay and when it's dirty it goes out to my compost.....and my compost eventually goes to my garden which grows food for the pigs. It's a great symbiosis.
I also find it much easier to wash 1x2 and 2x2 versus big old 2x4 or 2x5 pads. Also easier to sew.
I also compost and use the soiled hay (while TRYING TO avoid seed heads), and the poops. It has really helped my new yard along since spring if 2018!
Aww, I was waiting for you to start sewing! I have 'remade' a lot of the fleeces that had the waterproof backing. I was very unhappy with them because they not only became less effective after a while, but I also found that the different materials were shrinking/stretching at different rates so the matt would lose its shape. I ripped them off and folded whats left to make a half sized, double fleece sided matt. It did involve wrestling with my sewing machine lol!
I do my cages like this. I use absorbent Amazon cage liners, on top of that folded fleece blankets to make it soft and cozy, then target noodle bath mats under houses, tunnels, and then the target bathmats in the kitchen. I’d rather use paper bedding in the kitchen but I’m not happy with the price. My blankets and cage liners almost never get dirty. The mats are super absorbent.
Is there no end to your talents?! I remember your other video but you always come up with great new ideas 💡 I love sewing and made a patchwork dog bed for our dog, simply out of leftover odds and ends. He still sits on the couch. Maybe I could make a fleece throw 🤔 YNWA

I use 2 layers of diaper cloth between my fleece pads, and use a shower curtain liner for water proof backing.

Scotty doesn't use a waterproof bottom layer fabric, but I like to use a waterproof crib mattress cover for the bottom of my dyi fleece. The Uhaul blanket wicks up any heavy urine or water bottle drips. Also, I recommend Nature's Miracle enzyme cleaner and deoderant. A lot of people use it for dog and cat urine, vomit, or feces, but it ia guinea pig safe. Just take a washed fleece and spray it with the enzyme cleaner. Let the fleece air dry. It neutraluzes my boar smells. Before you launder fleece, you can sweep any extra hay stuck after you shook the fleece.

My rescues are on fleece and they have their own washing machine too! Or you might say I have my own washing machine.
White vinegar and a little washing soap is perfect.
I lay fleece over old cotton towels and clothes. That way they can be washed separately.
Where they do most of their "business" there is a small second layer of this, changed daily. The larger whole pen cover is changed once per week, and vacuumed every day.

I love using fleece but having shavings “boxes” under the hay feeders where they sit to eat and sometimes want to sleep. Love someone who can use a sewing machine. Wish I was more handy that way. Layers but also enough stretch are so important. Terrific video 🤩🇨🇦🌟

That is a good tip! I have also found that many fabric stores have a scrap area. Perfect for making smaller pads or sometimes you get lucky

And I’m definitely going to be watching your video on how to make them myself because I have four large ones so I wanna make a bunch a little ones. And as far as the backing of some of them being waterproof and it not evaporating and getting wet and icky is right on because that is exactly what happens! You have been so freaking helpful! I've switched to using waterproof bed pads made with zorb. Then sew on polor fleece. My maintainer lasts 2 to 3 weeks . With lots of smaller pee pads in highly used areas. I tend to buy the bed pads new but being sold cheaper on vinted or ebay etc. I tried the batting before and my ladies really soaked them.
I may have to try your three panels on top of the full cage panel method. Currently, I am using about five “pee pads” on top of two 2x3 bottom liners. I change the top pads every day or two. Sometimes I can flip the pee pad over. (I made 90 % of my pads with two layers of non-pill fleece and one You Haul furniture pad. I bought four 12 inch by 12 inch pads made with two layers of You Haul pads in them and they work great)
I can’t always predict where my guys are going to pee, though! I have a pad under their three hidies and one on each side of the snack shack, and one under the water bottle. But sometimes they pee in the other two corners of the cage. So that means your method of putting three pads across the top of your long cage pad might be the answer to that problem. So sorry for the long message! PS I do the same thing you do- I usually use a solid color bottom cage pad, and let the pops of color come from my pee pads!

I use towels for inside, but I will give the batting a try to. My pigs are in a room on the floor and as a first layer I like to use storebought fleece picknick plaids. They have a plastic backing and are pretty cheap
I’ve gone to dish drying mats under noodle pads for my skinnies, they like the extra squish underfoot. My furred crew still has 3 Satins so I just use Fleece with Uhaul pads or wool batting if I can find it on the cheap. They do have two big pads (3x6) so limited seams, then the small pads under houses and such. I keep with a single layer for them. I do prefer double, but for the Satins, they get the most accessible housing possible.
Kitchens for me are newspaper (Skinnies) and kiln dried/heat treated pine (Furred - heat treated is safe per my vets) then I toss everything in compost bin daily or twice daily.
I however cannot use Free and Clear, my water means F&C/natural detergent builds up a gummy layer. But I’ve used basic Tide or Persil for 35 years of critters now with no respiratory issues in any critter. But I also don’t use fabric softener or scent additives, which I personally think has more issues.

I don't know how to sew, but I've found some wonderful Etsy shops for fleece. I much prefer fleece to paper or wood shavings. We also like to start with Guinea Dad liners and then fleece pads on top of that. Sally and Zero are from Nightmare before Christmas. :)
WOW, Scott thank you so much for helping learn about the Fleece. I wanted to go to fleece. I already use Free and Clear cause of my own skin. I am allergic to Fabric Softerner. I thought it would make sense to make my own fleece.

I sew mine with fleece and uhaul. I buy uhaul blankets from uhaul moving stores. They are huge and only $8! If you buy in bulk, you can get free shipping which is good if you don’t live near a uhaul store☺️

My kiddos have a real bad habit of gnawing on coroplast so I throw washable absorbent pads under a fleece blanket, which I can wrap over the edges of the cage. It's been ok so far cause I set them up a food/litter area with compostable paper bedding. They tend to use that for the majority of their waste, so all that happens on the fleece is the odd accident or rage-spray. I scoop out the soiled bedding every couple days and sweep the blanket, and it keeps the smell and mess down. Then I change out and wash the fleece every week, and wash the pee pads every couple weeks.
I was always told cotton batting wasn’t absorbent ? I make my own liners but using uhaul I love how they thicken up over time also haha . Love your videos thank you for always helping everyone!
I use old towels for the middle. I can get 5-6 towels for 3$ at my local thrift store.

I completely agree with you on the disposable puppy pee pads. I see so many people on Guinea pig sites using them and it bothers me every time. I also hate hearing people say they just buy the cheep $3 fleece blankets from Walmart and throw them out.
I use the $3 cheap fleece openkng and put put queen size human pee pads with blue back in between. then have smaller pads made to wash daily where they do their business the most.
If you don’t mind my asking, why are you against disposable pee pads? I’m really interested!
@@wateredeggs8198 Many reasons. 1) the health of the Guinea pig, the disposable pads are filled with toxic chemicals that will harm the pig that chews on them. 2) the environment, Far too many Americans are ok with purchasing items filled plastic and toxic chemicals to just throw in the trash after one use.
Same issue with people purchasing cheap fleece blankets to just throw them away weekly.

Scott to answer your question about The Nightmare Before Christmas characters. The dog's name is Zero. And the girl her name is Sally. And a real cool fun fact about Zero Jack Skellington's Ghost Dog. Is that Zero's nose is a Jack-o-Lantern.
I have 2 boys and one pees all over the cage. I'd love it if he had a couple designated spots like his cage mate. Is there a way to get a piggy to pick a spot?
Put the house food bowl water bottle and hey all in one spot and keep the rest wide open that should make somewhat of a difference

Very informative, thank you. I've been using kiln dried pine and would like to consider fleece. The cost to buy the liners is absurd, so I'll need to get a sewing machine and make them...but that alone feels like a huge hurdle. I don't know anything about sewing machines. What do you use? (All welcome to reply on machine advise. This would be the only thing I'd likely be sewing and don't want to over spend, or worse, buy a machine that isn't sturdy enough.)

But how do you keep these fleece liners from sliding around the cage? Because mine is. All the time. When piggies run around or when I spot clean it goes everywhere 🤣
To make your fleece pads stay better, make them heavier by adding an extra middle core of bath towel (or 100% cotton from old Tshirts or something). I do the fleece front and back layers, then the middle fabric that is the core layer inside is any kind of absorb ant material. They should be dense enuf not to slide easily.
Do you ever use noodle rugs? I got rave reviews on them so I spent way too much money and I don't like them nearly as much as liners and pee pads. They'll definitely do until I can make some more fleece pads though! Your liners are so pretty. Mine are not pretty or perfect at All but they work! I do fleece, batting, vinyl sheet, batting and then fleece, so there are the benefits of both the waterproof and the flipper in one.
For me - noodles are good with the skinnies, but they hold tons of hair.
That's very true! I have one skinny and several Abby's and the Abby shedding is a problem lol

Does polyester batting work aswell?? i cannot find in my area any cotton batting only the polyester one
Any particular reason for the fleece over other fabrics? Because I sew as a hobby and for my own reusable menstrual pads I prefer multiple layers of flannelette. I was planning to use that for cage pads because I know it works well for absorbency and comfort and I have it on hand
I love this idea may I ask what sewing machine would be good for 3 layers or with U-Haul cause that is some thick fabric.
My sewing machine was relatively cheap and there's nothing special about it
But I do break needles relatively frequently. I only broke one this time when I had two layers of U-Haul pad. Just get a bunch of General use needles and you should be fine

i went the fleece flipper route from Guinea Pig Market. set up is expensive but i think it will make it easier in the long run. its a bunch of 2x1 fleece with uhaul pads with a slap of a Coroplast insert so that holds the fleece down from bunching up. i just got it in, did the washes and assembled the flippers. i have to switch over tomorrow. Going to try my hand at making small high traffic ones but it should be easy to pick up one section to clean it off. hopefully it works out awesome. my friend recommended it to me. Is there a place for recommended patterns? i didnt know that was important for absoption

Is it possible to use a cotton towel between the fleece? Thrift store towels are only a few dollars for an entire bag. Has any tried this?
Can you use towels under the fleece? That's what I have done the past 2 years...I only have 2 pigs and do everyday full cage cleans of their Midwest. I used disposable puppy pads for the longest time before. So that was shocking to see that you shouldn't do that. I never had issues with it, but it was very wasteful :/ I still have some of the washable dog pee pads though that I use.

I've made my own for 4 years but I have a bladder stone prone pig who I keep extra hydrated so.......... Laundry every day (and I have hundreds of fleece pee pads, liners, tunnels etc)
Cost for electricity id going up so much in uk that I'm concerned, millions of homes including myself and my boys in fuel poverty.
I love fleece but have to look for an alternative now for at least half their c and c xxxx

I’ve seen vidoes with people just using a proper fleece layer, and the like doggy pads underneath or reusable doggy pads? Why is it bad if I clean the cage 2 a week? Thanks for the advice is there anything else I could use like a u haul pad. I’m not comfortable with my sewing skills nor can I get a machine. So layering is all I can do.
I use towels because I can't afford the fancy fabrics. They work pretty good as long as you change them out often enough.
I sew the fleece to the towels so they stay in place. And the pads in the frequent-pee-zones get changed daily.
