    When I watch this interview (in April 2021), I constantly have to remind myself that all four of the classic line-up were still alive at that point. Such a long time ago... Now Andy is the only survivor. Rock on, Andy. RIP Brian, Mick and Steve. Your music will live on forever, guys.

    Speaking as a 59 year old and one who just discovered the band Sweet, it’s apparent how timely Scott’s playing really is. I love music and myself have played jazz and fusion guitar for 45 years. To watch videos of Scott and the band from the early seventies, it’s amazing to witness how ahead of his time he was in his playing and his presence on stage. A true innovator. What a talent.

    Andy comes across here as very genuine and honest with no ego. Considering The Sweet don't really get much credit for how good a band they were, Andy does not blow his horn to try and gain favor with those who have maybe dismissed him and The Sweet too quickly. For those who feel that Andy was mean to Brian, I can tell you from experience that it is very frustrating and gets old fast dealing with alcoholics. You can't rely on them, they don't want your help, and everything is that happens to them is someone else's fault. Andy himself admits here that he could have dealt with things differently, but the outcome may have been the same. Only hindsight is 20/20. Brian's demise was super sad, as was Mick's early passing. They did make some great music though that remains.

    • @celticvixen8002
      @celticvixen8002 4 роки тому +8

      Hindsight is a wonderful thing! I think they should have taken a year off and put Brian into a rehab to give him the best chance possible to get well. Thinking has changed in the past 40 years where alcoholism is concerned, it’s looked at as an illness in the same way cancer or heart disease is. I lost my brother to this terrible illness, it takes no prisoners when it gets a grip on them. My heart bleeds for Brian.

    • @JohnWalshLegend

      All the Sweet line up were superb musicians, who had fun and didn't take themselves too seriously. It seems Andy was the most professional, and wanted the band to achieve a higher level of music, which they could have done. They could have done Prog Rock very easily.

    • @andreasuhlbrandt6743
      @andreasuhlbrandt6743 3 роки тому +4

      @@celticvixen8002 I do agree. Andy had to take a responsibility on the band and Brian didn´t like it, But in those circumstances, that was the only choice. How can you help somebody, when one does not care bout it himself and things are going to waiste. I think there were no one in band who could have talked to Brian and trred to make him to get help, even his wife Marilyn couldn´t - I still think, they could have put Brian out off the band for a year and then see, what can they do and then headin step by step and see, what kinda cake would become; it never did and we know Brian had multiple heart attacks and he lost his voice and he was only the shadow of his highlight days. Still makes me sad.

      Very well said, bumzigan.

    • @poulwinther
      @poulwinther 2 роки тому +1

      The fact is that only Brian could have helped Brian. Should the band have rounded him up in some kind of cliche intervention? I very much doubt that he would have taken kindly to that, but the other part is, when you're young and fully fed up with the situation already, that's not your first thought. I've wasted way too much time on similar situations, like traveling an hour to rehearsal while the guy who lived around the corner was too wasted to show up. Even in hindsight there were absolutely nothing I could have done, except for walking away much sooner.
      I find it really strange how a lot of the community wants to blame the band for Brian's problems. That Brian himself ended up bitter and blaming mostly Andy, is a very human thing to do when the mirror becomes tough to face. We will never fully understand Brian's demons but we have to treasure all that was, and see the best of it like Andy was doing here, and like he does even more today. What a fantastic band they were and oh how far they could have went with better management and a less self-destructive behavior.

    What a great interview and what a gentleman. Was a schoolboy fan back in the day then got into Sabbath and punk rock and realised all the real tunes were on the B sides!! To this day the Strung Up (Japanese version) with its mix of classics, outtakes, and a well focussed live selection is one of my top ten albums ever. When the bubblegum was taken away the boys rocked hard, and who knows where they might have gone without the burden of that image. Anyways, in light of all that Andy here, for me, gives a truly genuine take on events. maximum respect to the guy from me, a true legend.

    Having just found an old dvd of the sweet which I bought back in the mid 1990's.
    I must say that from a documentary I saw back then. One of the band members
    said that you, Andy, did not get on well with Brian. But having watched the dvd
    again last night, it was Brian's drinking, and inability to hold his drink, that led
    sadly, to "The Sweet" finally breaking up. I must say, however, that like Brian,
    I too, am a skinny guy, and can't take much liquor without my heart racing. Its
    only the fact that I have been on Beta--Blockers for the past 30 years or so,
    that I have avoided the heart attacks that Brian had sufferred. It's all down to
    metabolism, and Brian admitted that his body just could not take the excessive
    drinking, that he was doing at the time. Its such a shame, that this once talented
    band are no longer with us. Hang on in there Andy and Steve. Long may you both
    keep the Sweet's Music alive.

    When The Sweet first broke out here in the States, I was into Zep, The Who, Aerosmith; bands that were much heavier than Sweet. In fact, I used to laugh at Sweet and Bay City Rollers. Now that I'm much older, I find myself going back and checking things out. Put aside the fact that a producer and studio musicians laid down everything except the vocals. All four of these guys sang awesome harmonies. Even live, which you can find on UA-cam, The Sweet can play very good and still do all of those vocals. You can hear the thousands of hours of rehearsal.
    It is such a shame that Brian and Mick have passed away. Brian was such a force as a frontman and lead vocalist. Andy with some really good guitar and keyboard work. Mick was a really tight drummer and Steve just laid in the pocket and his vocal was so huge. Great band.

    Thanks so much for sharing this uncut interview. Another nod to the professionalism with which Andy and the rest of the band approached their career. I like the idea that they 'prostituted' themselves as to sing the teenie-bop stuff churned out by Chinnichap from a commercial perspective and then using the success to do their own thing. I still remember one day after school vising a friend who had just bought Desolation Boulevard. He selected 'The Man With The Golden Arm' and I asked him if he put on the right record, because I couldn't recognise the Teenie-Bop band I was used too. The virtuosity pretty much blew me away.

    What a great interview, honest and forthcoming, as a band i grew up with, this, for me is audio and visual gold! Even though I'm late watching it! You are right Andy when you say that certain sections pigeon hole you to those few earlier hits, as great as they were/are, for me songs like Action are favourites, i found it interesting as well to hear you talk about the rest of the band, who unfortunately are no longer with us, Andy, live long and prosper, hope you continue for a long time to come! Thanks for sharing your music.

    I have a Channel 4 documentary from 1996 called "Don't leave
    me this way" It focuses on original lead singer Brian Connolly,
    trying to make a comeback. By then, Brian was looking really
    frail, and sufferring from tremors, and stomach problems. He
    was appearing at Butlin's Holiday Camp but he went down like
    a lead balloon. He looked alot older than his years. In fact he
    died just months after the programme was made, aged just 51.

      I actually watched it and it was gut wrenching & hard to watch - It made me feel so bad for Brian still trying to maintain some credibility and the band members holding him on stage ..

    Andy has had some stick over the years for forcing Brian out of the group, but lets face it Brian was completely gone when the drink took hold of him

      Well Andy and Steve were the guitar players, Steve on Bass, and Andy was
      the main man with his lead guitar riffs. Add Brian's voice, and Micks fast
      drumming and you had a winning combination. The Sweet.

    I know he has said at times they were all drinking too much and doing drugs. He must’ve had a level head and was careful or he would not be with us today. I liked the fact Sweet were able to laugh at themselves and have fun with the glam. It’s too bad the music community doesn’t have a csense of humor. I love the music and they made me laugh. A near perfect combination. The outfits in no way deminished their ability to make good music they were not taken seriously when they should have been.

    I was 7 when Little Willy was the hit that spring. Loved it to DEATH. That and Go All The Way made me a RROR(Rocker Raised On Radio)for life. Just read of Steve's passing(awful). Knew there was a lot of bad blood twixt Andy and Steve, lotsa shit passed between them in the press. Although Andy was definitely the driving talent, Steve was the sardonic sneer taking the piss of the parents while offering his awesome harmony work. That The Sweet will be largely forgotten when we've all assumed room temp is an actual tragedy, IMHO.
