As an owner of the 2019 Prado VX-L, I think its a great vehicle in terms of value for money. this is our 4th prado. You cannot beat the resale value, im sorry! give these 2 vehicles 10 years and I can promise you the defender will be worth less, with far more things that need fixing or replacing. I am sure the defender is a better driving experience, but like my first prado, If I want to drive it to 400000KM with only replacing the essential maintenance items, will it last? Who buys a prado in that colour and that interior, it looks a lot better in silver or white with black leather.

Hard to believe that the Defender broke on a test run, but then it is a snow car and he did take it on some minor dust. I had a 90 series Prado for 18 years and 320,000km. No trouble. Then a D4. Things doors would not open at a campsite in Bots. Help consisted of me being told to 'bring it to Johannesburg for a software upgrade", while actually, a door actuator had failed. After that I wouldn't leave phone contact range with a dealer, which basically means stay in the city. Back to a 150 Prado. I know I will get back home each time I go out. 10 USB ports don't help with that.

Of all my years of driving I’ve never cared about how a cabin looks as long as it serves it’s intended purpose which the prado does perfectly, the exterior though I care for and the prado is not a bad looking car to my eyes. The landy looks good too and it certainly turns heads, but just as a new phone, once you are done running through the new features and settings that will probably never use, you just want something reliable that works perfect. This is probably the reason apple flagships out sell Samsung by numbers to 1. Remember it’s easier to throw away 1000$ on a phone than it is to throw 50-100k on a car, therefore the more sensible buy is the more reliable product. It would be nice to have some of the features from the landy in the prado but I’d rather have peace of mind than a bunch of tech I will only go through in the first weeks of ownership and get bored of later in a car riddled with unreliability issues. Motoring journalist are the only ones who get this nit picky since they only have the car during the period of running through all its features, also their turn on is more and more features that’s why this review ends up like this.

Fairly sure that the Prado and 200 Series LC are overdue for replacement with a single modern new model. The Defender was not prepared properly by the supplying dealer, which should have updated the software and done a pre-delivery inspection before letting it loose in the wild. If it is a press car, someone needs their bottom spanked by a thorn bush.

I own a lower spec Prado and I‘m pretty happy with it‘s interior. Easy to clean and in some areas quite utilitarian. I think that’s part of the philosophy of the Land Cruiser model range. They aren’t pretty but they don’t let you down what makes them they best buy. I wouldn’t spend any money on a Tata Rover. Older Discos and Defenders might be good off roaders but the later stuff is premium rubbish to show off.

These new Defenders will not appeal to overlanders/tourers like the old ones because they are too expensive, complicated and for the forseable future, not 3rd party customisable. If I had staff to run around booking in my repairs, dropping off the Landrover for me, a spare car for the down time with repairs, and of course copiuos quantities of cash to pay for all the broken stuff on the Landrover, and the staff wages, and the spare car, id have the Landrover everyday. However which one do you want to be in when it breaks whilst in a remote location, or traveling with your family. I had a Land Rover 110 pickup for 22 years until it was scrapped due to being generally too worn out to justify repairing a failed piston in its Diesel engine. I've had two big [80 and the 100 series] and three Range Rovers plus a Discovery MkI plus many other brands over the years and the only ones to have left me stranded were another 110 [a station wagon], the 80 series Land Cruiser whose fuel injection pump failed and a BMW X5 that had electrical issues. The last Range Rover I owned was the best built and most reliable of them all, a 2004 model, and I ran it concurrent with the 100 Series, the 110 pickup and an Isuzu Trooper plus something else, I can't quite remember the timeline.

As much as lovely and modern the defender is, it can still be a let down. The reason why buyers are opting for brand new vehicles over used ones is because they mostly want something that is hassle free and won't give them headaches in the long run. But sadly, the land rover fails to deliver in that part. It's just like ford; equipped with the latest boat loads of fancy technology at the expense of cheap quality. And what sucks is that you pay higher only to get something like that in return. Meanwhile, the prado also has its faults. While it's not all bad overall, the price is a bit high for something that has a decade-old platform although it is due for replacement next year. Exterior is decent but ofc interior is very meh compared to the new ute. Tho hey, at least it does have some gadgetry inside and is much more modern compared to something more traditional and spartan like the retiring pajero. Also it's obvious that it's tough as nails too. My conclusion, the defender may be the more friendly vehicle in terms of experience on-road/off-road because it's a lot fresher, luxurious and jam-packed with features that makes the prado look like an average ute. However, the latter is still better all-around tho especially when it's remarkable in things like reliability, resale value, network, simplicity and like the defender, it's premium as well albeit in an old-fashioned way. But if you are a serious offroader tho, what makes the prado more capable is that it won't let you down in case you have to traverse through flood or rivers. Whereas the rover may break down because its fully of electric stuff. So there's that too.
