After this epic off-road review, do you think the new Defender is a worthy successor to the old Defender?
Im looking forward to svr version with a big old 5.0 v8 supercharged engine that would be awsome
As I watch this, no, no I don't. Too complex, too expensive. The old Series LRs and Defenders weren't the most reliable (I've owned three and used others) but a huge part of the appeal was their simplicity and ease of maintenance, repair, and upgradability - their utilitarian approach. That's why there are still thousands of them scattered around the world and being held together by bits of whatever. No computers needed. These look hugely capable but get totally away form that original essence. Too complex, too expensive. Basically they seem more likely to take sales away from Discoveries than the traditional Defender buyers, who've since moved on to Japanese pick-ups.
Old defender was great, but also seriously flawed. I drove my dad's V8 County, extremely cramp for my height and slow (except off the line at lights). Henry just proved this is a worthy successor.
Some purists will always complain about it for sure. Been a long time fan of ‘off-roading’ and green lanes I’d bet certainly happy to swap my Landy for one.. that said I would be scared about scratching it my current one gets driven through bush’s and all sorts at the moment. Well done LR for me I think it’s great!
As someone who does aid work in difficult parts of India I can tell you that this car is positively reassuring and one of the few that I look forward to get as a tool for my work. It's very difficult to help westerners understand how much relevant these capabilities are, all the "smart talk" about comparisons with discovery, and hp and electric motors and stuff is irrelevant to some who use these types of cars as a tool in their work. Reliability, serviceability and available of parts , Ground clearance that's the golden triangle.
Catchpole is the undisputed king of automotive journalism.
Yeah, together with Harry Metcalfe
I raise your Chris Harris....
@The Hammerman & @KTM_ADVrider Yap, those 3 should be Top Gear presenters together.
Throw in Mat Watson for comic relief!
He is good. I also do enjoy Steve Sutcliffe.
Best press drive and resulting video EVER !
Not sure how you could beat this. Well done Henry and team 👏
Hello peter!
I can't believe that I watched that for free. This was absolutely extraordinary. Bravo!
Hey now don't give them ideas now lol
I will still choose the toyota landcruiser over this. Hahahaha
@Viktor Sligo Who could blame them? My Al Gore Rhythms are mighty fine. 😂
@@YBehri Whether they're paid by JLR or not, it's not coming from my own pocket. Besides, reviews are of no value to me apart from that of entertainment, and this was fantastic entertainment.
Wow ... easily pleased aint ya!
This is by far the most impressive car review for me in many years' time. The filming capability is second to none. Well done Henry and the team!
wait a minute... did the LR pay for the trip? 🤣
this isnt a car review, its a movie i enjoyed watching very much...thank you for all this wonderful work - its just perfect!
kkkkkkk agreed
Lawrence Of Namibia
I rarely feel the need to comment but this was a remarkably well put together short film. In my opinion, Carfection's quality outclassed the other automotive journalists on this trip. The star gazing scene at 16:00 truly portrayed a sense of adventure which took me to another place for that moment. Well done Carfection and well done Land Rover. The new Defender is worthy of its name and heritage.
Absolutely agreed
MLH Media I agree !
It's Amazing
I've only watched the topgear one but yea this one is really good
The review of the new Rs6 had some the most amazing quality shots i have seen until this i think, Carfection really is on another level right now!
If there is the Oscar for the car review, this one definitely easily wins it. Well done Carfection!
Henry is that dude, so effortless
The night sky scene was....mesmerizing, years without seeing such an amazing sky. Txs!
Cameras see things differently. The night sky doesn't look like that there by eye.
I have just done 4500km or travel through Zimbabwe where I basically lived out of the Defender for two weeks. I did everything from overgrown tracks to thick sand, rocks and mud. The new defender didn't miss a beat. I will be doing a video about the trip soon
Any update?
@@yahtadi5152do you need an update from me?
The planning, the writing, the cinematography, all the PTC are exceptional in this review. Thank you, Henry and crew for being fantastic at what you do.
Henry: "Let me be clear about this, the new Defender needs to be reliable."
Anyone who's ever owned a Land Rover: "lol"
Great review, Henry is unmatched in current automotive journalism.
coocoo4coca yeah if I need an Africa explorer vehicle, I’m just gonna get a toyota
@@Two-Stack why not a defender
@@woodchip543 It's going to break down the second day
@@woodchip543 "If you want to go anywhere in the world, take a Land Rover. If you want to make it back again, take a Toyota"
Have you owned a defender then? Ok, thought not
You know Carperfection has come a long way, when they out perform Top Gear in production value. Excellent work guys!
What about knowing what they are talking about!?
Others have already stated what I was thinking but I wanted to add that this channel is one of the best automotive channels period. Henry is subtly hilarious and a true gearhead, who is not only great at driving, but has a passion for what he does. The whole crew deserves unending lauded praise for their work on this video--truly a gorgeous video.
thanks, dude, it mean a lots to me
love, from India
I didn't even realize that the video was half an hour! It felt like watching one of the best old top gears with the big three
16:01 - why everyone should see Namibia before they die. Epic review Henry. This really is Top Gear-ending content. A new standard has been set.
I did a motorbike trip through Namibia , amazing country
Nah .. top gear edits are simply the best . But yes the hosts in carfection are the best.
@@AhmedMehluf but they outdid topgear with this one!
I watched the TopGear version of this review, Carfection you are leagues ahead.... 👍🏻
As a former topgear watcher, I agree but top gear has never been the same since jeremy, james, and hammond has left
True... Also carFection didn't call Africa a county like in the first top gear Namibia trailer that they deleted after an hour.
What, they still make Top Gear? What's the point?
@@Jerem3iah I totally agree.
I very much agree. Excellent work.
Before: Uhnnn 30 minutes video for the new defender? RLY?
After: Why not 1 hour?!
10/10
Giovani I’m in the same boat, I really liked this video and would love to see more footage
Thats because everyone is scrambling to review it !
Bcoz it was in it's natural habitat.
That is one of the best bits of car journalism I have seen in years. Entertaining, informative and not taking itself too seriously. Well done.
I’m impressed his white T-shirt stayed immaculately clean. I can’t even walk out of the house without a smudge or two randomly appearing :(
Carfection make easily the highest quality car content out there, never disappoints. And Henry is an okay host as well I suppose ;)
Absolutely brilliant review! Well done, Henry and Carfection. You are indeed the best storyteller between all the car reviewers. You are also the only one I have seen yet that responds so much to the fantastic landscapes of Namibia. Thank you for taking us with you.
After all the other reviews we've seen, we can't wait to see the Carfection take on an icon reborn!
I know this might come as a shock to people that only use their SUVs on the school run - but being able to survive three days of dirt roads doesn’t make a car rugged. The wife watched it and said “that looks pretty easy!” . My old defender has been doing that stuff for 15 years. 😜
Probably the piece of automotive review ever put on youtube. It captured all the essence of what these vehicles were meant to do. Absolute class.
That’s got to of been one of the very best videos you guys have ever done!! Bloody fantastic :)
The best car channel and the best car journalist doing what he does best 👊🏻
“Night, like me trying to surf, falls quickly” oh Henry 😂
If he's surfing in those shorts, we can see why.
The best UA-cam automotive journalist by far, and this is one of Henry’s best.
This is a beautiful video that was shot in my own country, I love it and I am looking forward to pass that Van Zyl's pass in my own defender in the near future. I like your videos. Thanks mate!
Carfection knocking it out of the park, this is documentary level quality
That was wonderful. If Land Rover sales shoot through the miraculous, night sky, they may have Carfection and Henry to thank for that.
The David Attenborough part killed me, had to pause and comment haha!
Lmao
Lol
As a film maker (and LR enthusiast) who made car commercials for most of his working life, Carfection is one of the few UA-cam Channels I can watch in any comfort . Well done guys!
Utterly beautiful film
Thank you Carfection, this review is so much better than Top Gears
From all channels, this is the best car video of the year so far!
Namibia is breathtakingly beautiful! 😱🤯 And those starry night shots!! Eat your heart out NASA!✨🌌 Thank you for such a beautiful and informative video.
You will appreciate it more in person trust me. Too bad Covid19 is wrecking havoc with traveling to different parts of the world
Some old hardened Land Rover people would rather see new Defender crash and burn than to admit this is the modern equivalent.
There are car reviews, and then there are automotive documentaries. This is CLEARLY the latter and Henry Catchpole is, to me, the David Attenborough of motor journalism. Exceptional!
@4:21 I remember landrover mentioning the snorkel wouldn't increase the wading depth, instead it helps to take in cleaner air in dusty conditions. So i guess it's not for the water but for the sandy dunes.
For all the middle east buyers..
There is the manufacturer's recommended wading depth which is what you can do without damaging anything at all, and what you can get away with in practice when you absolutely have to cross a certain river. I fit a snorkel on my old defender, and was often doing way more than the 50cm they recommend. There are several limiting factors in terms of the safe wading depth, but the air intake is the critical one while the other ones are more like "getting water in there might reduce the lifespan of this or that part" kind of limit. At least that's how it was with the old one.
Congratulations to the whole carfection team. I enjoyed every second of that!
No other Defender review matters. Or can stand up to this. Once again Carfection bringing the world the pinnacle review.
The best video/car review of 2020 thus far
Henry is still the most articulate and insightful car reviewer I've had the pleasure to watch. The Attenborough of cars!
This is the best defender review so far🙌🏼. Look at that stars ✨
Journalism and videography of the highest quality. Bravo Henry, Charlie and Carfection 👍🏻👍🏻
Bloody hell, this might be a new high watermark for youtube automotive journalism. At the very least it's some of the best content Carfection has ever produced.
Even a a person who isn't a car enthusiast would love this content. top notch
Working my way through these reviews now that they are unembargoed. Henry and Carfection's take on this trip is the best by far, you guys need to be on TV, you outclass even the obvious competition. I'm glad JLR know who they should be inviting on these trips.
I watched the top gear review before this, and i regret it. this review is so much better!
I did the same and I agree this review is way better
Amazing as usual! I was curious how you'd make a video of a Defender interesting, but Carfection consistently manages to spin unique tale for each car.
looks like an awesome experience this trip. That older Defender looks so much better than this new one. Wish manufacturers could provide modern reliability and technology with this killer strong vintage looks 👍
uhm, this is just a personal opinion, but I still like the look of the new defender
The future is now,old man
They can. It's called a Grenadier.
what a great video showcasing the new defender , thoroughly enjoyable. thanks
Absolutely nailed it Henry (as seemingly JLR have too). What a superb production.
You guys really have filled the void left by the departure of the big three, and continue to raise the bar.
Wow! This is the "BEST" by far, review of the new Defender that I have seen. Delivered with a clear and concise style that people of average intelligence (like Myself) can understand. I have Loved Land Rovers ever since my time in the Army and have been lucky enough to own a 2009 Defender 90 and a 1955 Series 1 with 200TDi and Series 3 running gear. I for one shall be "waving" at the new Defender. It still embodies the basic principles of the "Land Rover" made in 1947/48. It can go where a lot of other vehicles can not. I will never be able to afford one but I am happy with my Series 1. Well Done Land Rover and well done you on an excellent review. Lets Hope we all survive this poxy virus and can continue to drive our Land Rovers for as long as we can. G
By far, by far the best test of defenders i have seen. Thank you.
Absolute Carfection yet again. Best motoring channel in all of UA-cam.
What an amazing video! The quality of the pics the scenery, the cars, the commentary. Awesome. Those skies! 😎
This is a great film. Thank you Carfection team!
Great journey on the new Defender!!! Thanks for the amazing footage in Southern Africa! Really fantastic cinematic shoots! As well some historical information on local land. Video on much higher level than "Top Gear"...
Огромное спасибо за отличный обзор нового "Дефендера" в подходящих условиях со всеми вытекающими внедорожными условиями. Намного круче чем обзор у "Top Gear".
As a person who enjoys off roading I say this could have been a long documentary. I now love this defender more.
Henry really is the best automotive journalist on UA-cam
Didn’t watch the other reviews, waited for Catchpole to do it! Best ever.
Wow - that took car reviews to another level (a bit like the Defender has with the competition)! Well done Henry and the Carfection team - budget well spent 👍🏽🙏🏽😊
Awesome. Loved the drive through Africa. You were wonderful in giving the tour of what the Defender can do. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽💜
No other video on the Defender comes close to Carfection. Top class.
I never thought that I'd hear Henry say the word "gnarly". Amazing video as always!
This IMO has been Carfections finest video, Well done Henry, Bravo Team
Zac S I thought the review of the singer was a pretty epic film
What a masterpiece. Oh and of course the car as well
After watching this video, there is zero reason to watch any other video review of this car. Well done!
I have a 2008 Defender. It has been driven in a lot of country much like that in Namibia. I'm reassured that my intended purchase of the new Defender will enable me to see bits of Australia that I haven't seen yet. Excellent production by the way.
Henry and team, this video is top class. Keep following your instincts - it’s working.
I would buy one. Henry what an awsome work!
spent three years in namibia, loved it....nice to see it again..
Love this film. Beautiful place
16:13 What a beautiful moment. Bet most of us will never see that. Well, I probably won’t. Brilliant car the Defender is. Tackling all of those obstacles.
Really beautifully put together film, what an adventure!
decent Attenborough impression!
@0:32 when Catchpole’s shorts are the big reveal 😂 one of the best storytellers in the game, loving the longer video!
How can these car reviews be so inspirational? Absolute brilliance!
there is only one thing wrong with this upload
it's not long enough, fantastic stuff. thanks
cool stuff, the whole time i was just thinking how awesome would be this route on a motorcycle
dakar rally of the past comes to mind
"Better than Top Gear" button
For a second I thought u meant old top gear 😂😂
Pretty sure some of the old crew is working on this 2. The connections and similarities are obvious. And that's a good point.
I agree I switched across, this goes straight too the adventure
That shot of the Beechcraft flying over three defenders at the end is epic! All in all good work, Mr. Catchpole.
"Night, like me trying to surf, falls quickly"
Absolutely brilliant 😄, and another reason Henry is one of the top two car reviewers in the world (the other being Chris Harris)
Another exceptional production, just when Henry started to stretch to logic of needing to test defender "reliability" in an appropriate environment, picture zooms out .... and we see the SHORTS, I get it; "tongue in cheek".
Clever, enjoyed this vid.
Wow what a review! You are well worth your 2019 price! The video quality is so beautiful that it is almost a film / documentary. Keep going Carfection and Henry Catchpole

Love u carfection
These guys r seriously passionate
Fasinating to see both Henry and Jack from top gear looses their mind when they see wild animals 😆
Though Henry, as expected (unlike Jack Rix) didn't say: "Africa, what a country!"
Really great video, well filmed and presented. Thanks for this. Oh and the Defender’s pretty good too!
Watching this for the 3rd/4th time and each time I am impressed. it doesn't seem to tire me! Wow! Its a beautiful machine!
Welcome to Namibia 🇳🇦🥰
Beautiful place
I enjoyed that journey.
This is like a movie, definitely unmatched 👍
Henry just crushing it.
Carfection doesn't do reviews. These pieces are pure art where the car just happens to be in the frame.
Superb motoring journalism. The Defender in my mind looks great but I find the price ‘scary’ ! Incidentally the correct pronunciation of Van Zyl is Van Sail 😊
Having an older defender to show a comparison would have been helpful. While it would've made it through all the sections it would've been interesting to see how much easier the modern tech made the journey. Some people also don't want all the improvements and enjoy bare bones off road driving so it would have been something to consider in the making of this version.
