Generic name: Nitroglycerin.
Brand names: Nitro and Nitrolingual.
Available as spray, injection and patch.
How to use it?
- Spray: first take a rest. If your chest pain does NOT subsides use the spray. Do so by sitting down, press your tongue against the roof of your mouth and hold your breath. Then spray under the tongue and close your mouth. DO NOT inhale the spray. The drug should starts to work almost immediately. However if necessary, you can spray another puff after five minutes.
Contact a doctor immediately if the pain has not disappeared after three uses and after 15 minutes. This could indicate a heart attack.
- Patch: peel off the protective film and try not to touch the adhesive with your fingers. Apply the patch to a clean, dry, undamaged and not too hairy area on your chest or on the inside of the upper arm.
When to use it?
Nitroglycerin are part of a group of drugs called nitrates. These can cause vasodilation (which is the widening of your blood vessels), lowering the central venous pressure and decreases the supply of blood to the heart. That is why nitroglycerin can be used in the treatment of:
- Acute attacks of angina pectoris, which is a medical term for chest pain or heart cramp.
- And offlabel it is used in the treatment of acute heart failure and Acute coronary syndrome.
What is the correct dosage?
The precise dose will depend on your specific indication of use, the side effect you might experience and the severity of your symptoms. Therefore always use the precise amount and frequency your doctor prescribed you.
- However, when treating angina pectoris in adults with a spray your doctor might prescribe a dose of 1-2 sprays under the tongue. Which can be repeated after 5 minutes if necessary.
- When your doctor prescribed you nitroglycerin as a patch, the usual dose for an adult would be a patch of 5 mg per day. If necessary this can be increased up to a patch of 10 or 15mg per day.
What are the side-effects?
- Very common (10%): headache, nausea, vomiting.
- Common (1-10%): dizziness, low blood pressure, sleepiness, a fast heart rate.
- Uncommon (0.1-1%): Worsened symptoms of angina pectoris, collapse, allergic skin reactions.
- Rare (0.01-0.1%): transient redness of the face and neck.
- Very rare (0.01%): heartburn and exfoliative dermatitis.
Safety:
First of all nitroglycerin can cause dizziness. Which can make it dangerous to drive.
Furthermore if you combine it with alcohol, this might further increase some of the side effects you might experience.
In addition nitroglycerin can have interactions with other drugs your are taking. Always discuss this with your prescribing doctor.
Lastly, nitroglycerin can be dangerous for pregnant women and women who are breast feeding. Therefore always discuss this with your personal doctor.

Is that delivery method the most common?
Perhaps a little discussion about using them 5 or 10 minutes prior to exercise instead of only after feeling angina.

I have had a migraine for a whole week now. My Husband think his Nitroglycerin tablets will help to get rid of the migraine since all of the home remedies have not helped at all and I am getting really cranky. Would nitroglycerin help get rid of a migraine headache? I am desperate for any advice.
Never ever use a medication prescribed to someone other than yourself. Nitro is not used to cure headaches as it is a vasodilator intended for use with chest pain. One of the common side effects of nitro is a headache so it may worsen your current condition. I would suggest making an online or in person appointment with your primary care provider or maybe swing by an urgent care / ER.
Nitro will help eliviate the headache but like myself I get severe headaches/migraines a few days prior,the week of and a few days after my cycle. I was first prescribed nitroglycerin and after 2 cycles it didn't seem to help. Doctor then prescribed me Naproxen. I take one at the peak of the headache/migraine and I'm good for a whole month it feels like. See if you can try this method if the nitroglycerin doesn't help. But remember it's never okay to take a prescription medication that is Not prescribed to you directly. Dosages and side effects vary person to person

@@dieselnation555 it's electronic imaging of the heart, a doctor can see how your heart works and if there are any problems with it. i'm just ten years older and just because you are under 40 does not mean you're untouchable when it comes to your heart. In just two weeks time i landed my ass twice in the ambulance, and hospital. Never had anything prior to this. Be safe out there man. Peace
An ECG is basically a camera that takes electronic photos of the different sides of your heart. These photos are interpreted by trained professionals as they make sense of your hearts "squiggly lines". I'm sure you're fine and no lasting effects from your nitro venture lol.
If you're experiencing chest pains, you should tell your doctor. However, (not diagnostic) if you experience chest pain and can push on it with your hand and make it better or worst, it's most likely not an issue with your heart. However, if pushing around on your chest near the pain doesn't make your chest pain better or worst, that could be a sign of a heart related pain.

Does nitroglycerin help with pulmonary embolism emergency?
I don't see why it would - it's a clot traveling farther down narrowing arteries, into smaller vessels and capiliaries. I mean, you wouldn't start CPR on someone who you know is choking by giving them breaths.
Might help with an air embolism, but that's cardiac.

That is nitroglycerin (not known as nitro). Nitro dioxide is what's actually and commonly known as (nitro) two completely different things

Well, watching them melt away within 48 hours felt so good, and yes, I used what I mentioned the other day. It actually took a bit more to make them totally disappear, I just go’ogled Melissa Thanderski and followed her simple advice.
