Actually, half these steps could be skipped if he's willing to just use nitrocellulose as a lot of British firearms did back in WWI. It was cheaper and easier to make, and for the weapons of the time, refining the cellulose compound down added no real advantage in explosive gas production.

Freshly prepared NG isnt very sensitive, even if thoroughly washed and dried it isnt stupidly sensitive. The stuff burns with a torch like blue flame if you light small amounts. Indirect heat or sudden violent heating explode it easily though. Some organic peroxides are movie nitro sensive for real
