This really has nothing to do with retirement. It's addiction and depression. She needed a purpose in life, something to do with her money and a reason to get up in the morning.

Exactly. For me it was my faith that helped me through my depression. Having a sense of community and purpose really helps the human mind so much.

Retiring in 20s is not the problem. Normal person could find something useful to do like hobby or help others. Amanda had mental problems that she tried to drown with alcohol and drug use. And from this video it seems that her problems started before she retired.
Can't get retirement benefits in the US till your 67. Drained my 401k when I found out I was dying lol. They tax the shit you of you for it though
@@belialofeden here in finland you dont even get most of your retirement money, unless you live to like 100 yo. You only get payed 1k-3k a month when you retire and when you die goverment keeps the rest of the money.

So turns out her early retirement had NOTHING to do with how things turned out. She was already spinning out of control, depressed with a few other mental problems, self-medicating while abusing drugs and alcohol. In fact, her "retirement" came about from those problems. The industry is used to problematic actors and their toxic quirks. So imagine how bad the problems have to be for them to classify her as unmanageable and too big of a risk. Then she simply spun out of control as she no longer needed to hold back and there was no longer anyone managing her.

Yes - Her first interwiev left the exact same impression to me as the later ones. Everything is fantastic, I never do drugs etc.
Im pretty sure her role was the only thing that kept her consumption at bay.

@@xxx0ox0 Sadly, in my opinion, Hollywood did far less damage than her parents. What kid wouldn't crumble when they discover that the people supposed to shield you from exploiters are the ones making your life miserable to line their pockets.
I was medically retired from the military at 27. The problem is, if you’re not working you need to find something to fill your time, otherwise life can get pretty boring. It would be very easy to fall into substance abuse.
Depression/traumas, when treated poorly (or just straight up untreated), can and will get bad enough to a point where activities that should free up your mind will actually get you more anxious (can't disassociate them from traumas or takes a stupid amount of willpower to start. Or both)
Just to say that in some cases, hobbies won't help you at all (and might even do the reverse) unfortunately
We don't know what happened with Amanda at all, we only saw the consequences. Maybe it was just a lack of hobbies that spiraled out of control, maybe it was something entirely unrelated.
But seeing that she went to the gym or just went outside to do random stuff. Heck, some clips implies she has/had a dog so that should replace some boring times. I wouldn't be surprised there is way more to it than just a lack of hobbies. At the end of the day, we'll never get to know the full story of why she went down this badly

Drugs are juat a popular choice for a coping mechanism, like behavioural addictions and others. They are just more covered by the media and demonised as the issue is far more politicised.

Oh man, I miss Amanda Bynes. I know there were always those rumors about that creepy Dan Schneider during her Nickelodeon days. A lawyer who had explained some of his interactions with her over the course of 11 years revealed on his podcast that she had told him that she was R'd, forced to end the pregnancy, and had to continue to work with the person who did it. Also, she had said that acting is how she got through life. It was easier to be characters than herself. If one of the versions got hurt, it didn't matter because there were all of these other versions to keep her safe.

Saw a fascinating vod about european soccer academies and how 90% of the students don't get to be signed by clubs because they simply aren't good enough. The aftermath on that realization to some of those kids even led up to them taking their own lives. And the video was suggesting either some laws be implemented for age restrictions or academies should take responsibility for and provide alternative career paths and education. I mean as asmon said maybe this wasn't because she was a child actor but as he also said a lot of child actors do end up like this.

@@gagereed486 It goes both way, an academy, by picking a youth player (these generally already start around 10 years old sometimes sooner) make the player believe they are special, not once are they under the impression they're not going to make it. The academy in the mean time, keeps those players from pursuing other things like further education as they need to be fully committed to the club. So when you just get cut because you're not 'good enough' it is a devastating attack on the players mind but also years of dedication and lost time they could've spent properly furthering their education or a career.

@@gagereed486 Are you American by any chance? From what I know your system is that clubs take from college teams which keeps the focus on education. Scholarships etc, here the focus lies on the sport itself. So Academy/club generally do nothing with education. There are some clubs that have restrictions like AFC Ajax for example that if you don't get good grades you don't get to train. They also provide a school on their training grounds. But this again is outside of the European norm.

When I was young, Amanda Bynes was my favorite actress. She was so funny. I grew up watching The Amanda Show and her movies. "She's The Man" was my favorite movie for awhile, and honestly it's still funny as hell. Whenever I'm reminded about her, all I can think of is how much wasted talent there was. It is really tragic what happened. I genuinely do hope for her recovery and return to films one day, even if it would be awkward for a bit.

I honestly don't get how you'd get bored in retirement, especially if you have gaming as a hobby. In my twenties I got severe burn out at work and took like 2 years off living off my savings, and pretty much just gamed the entire time. I had zero problems keeping myself entertained.
Imagine a MAJOR burn out on a game that you've payed 20 hours a day for 2 years. Or retiring on an island with no electronic devices at all. Or binge watching shows 24/7 without sleep and once it's finished --- now you have to deal with the enormous black hole in your heart, messed up sleep patterns that just don't give you a break, and completely disoriented to reality for weeks. Gamers, artists, and especially these actors are naturally people who can very easily "immerse themselves" into their own worlds, who can easily suspend disbelief, who cannot help but "day-dream" and "roleplay". We're all prime candidates for getting lost like this, just that you can still get immersed in games of your choice in retirement --- But Amanda's game IS her job, she's been playing that extremely high-immersion Role Play Game called "Highest-calibre professional movie acting" since childhood and without it... Yikes, I wouldn't doubt that it will hit her like a truck. The sad part is that being so young, she'd only realize this after she has stepped away. And let's be honest, for someone who enjoy RP in RPGs? You don't get more immersed than actual Hollywood level film making. It is like a "high" that will prevent her from getting joy from things like RPing in WoW taverns. She's basically... Stuck with a severe withdrawal from the substance that gave her a high since childhood, this will be much more devastating than an Adult actor who has also tread through ordinary life before. As for retirement, I'm most certain that I will NEVER retire as long as I live, I will employ myself if I have to. Some call it "work", I call it "a reminder that reality and myself have not abandoned each other yet". Because why else should I give a F to this certainly less than beautiful reality? I can use this time in reality to enjoy more beautiful worlds in games and art and books and movies, yes, but in order to do that I better make sure I can force myself to care about this "necessary evil" enough to have the motivation to go on...
@@aarondodo4076 Yea it's understandable in her situation or others already struggling with depression or substance abuse. I still stand by my statement for well-adjusted individuals, however. Being able to retire early is a privilege and any issues that arise is simply a first world problem. There is simply no way you can't find a healthy alternative in this day and age with the internet, ability to travel anywhere and to do almost anything.
I remember Amanda Bynes from her time on All That, a kids sketch show on Nickelodeon in the 90s. It was crazy to see her fall so far. Kenan, also from All That, has gone on to be so successful.

Sounds like an ex-girlfriend of mine. She started off career driven and focused, would smoke weed from time-to-time, but eventually she started to wake-and-bake every single day and basically do nothing. Lost multiple jobs, stopped talking to her friends, lost all interest in doing anything or contributing to our relationship. As hard as I tried (and boy did I try!), she wouldn't snap out of it. Seemed to lose interest in everything. There was most likely an underlying major depression that went undiagnosed, and getting her to see a professional was completely out of the question. We eventually split and she moved back in with her parents. After that she dropped off of social media entirely and I have no idea if she got her life together or not. Really sad, but sometimes people spiral and there's nothing you or anyone else can do about it. 😟

Had a similar situation. Ive been speaking to a clinical psychologist every week for the last 7 years to deal with my own depression. Saw the signs with an ex and did everything I could to get her help. But if they don't want to get help then there's nothing you can do. Do everything you can to support but at the end of the day you have to look after yourself as your main priority.

This is what happens when parents overly shelter and helicopter their kid and control every aspect of their lives but completely fail to instill moral and philosophical guardrails, i.e. mental and emotional tools, to deal with the adversities of adulthood and being responsible for yourself in an adversarial unsheltered world. This isn’t even unique to child stars. Many children with controlling abusive parents end up this way to varying degrees.
Yeah. The problem with overly controlling parents is that the child could potentially never learn self control. Ironically being completely hands off or neglectful with the child has very similar results. It's important to figure out a balance.
Asmon is right, The sociological impact that society can have on a female can be pretty impactful, and it does show with how many times she brought up appearance as she probably was as a young girl hyper fixated on that by the people around her who wanted to leech off of her. While she was kept in this level of delusion that she lived inside of her mind it slowly, like a festering rot took her mind, and she ran from it into drugs and alcohol, and this was the result.

This has nothing to do with retiring in your 20's. This has more to do with being extremely famous as a kid and then becoming an adult and realizing you don't want to be famous anymore but no matter what you do someone is around every corner to harass you, or invade your personal space.
My buddy got to fucked up at the bar didnt want to leave his new pickup wasnt going to drive and just asked if he could sleep in his truck. The bartender said no problem. It was February so he started his pickup and laid his seat back woke up a few hours later to a knock at the window getting arrested for dui. Even with the video of him not leaving the parking lot still got hit just for starting the vehicle.
If you managed to get a large amount of money and want to retire young, keep doing something that is really fun for you. Keep doing it regularly. You could also do things where you don't get paid and do something for someone.
The worse you could do is change your usual day. Like start drinking alcohol, going out on a weekday, etc.
Sounds like a lot of us and unresolved issues or trauma. When we have something to distract ourselves we can manage and be fine, but when you can’t, thoughts come flooding back. She’s no different in this case to everyone else.
I do drug testing. Adderall is not meth. It is Amphetamine, which is chemically similar to meth, but has more of a medical use. It’s like how hydrogen peroxide is chemically close to water, but one is safe to consume and the other isn’t and the only difference is one oxygen molecule.
They have other ADHD meds that aren’t amphetamine based. If the medication helps you function better, so long as you aren’t abusing it, there’s nothing wrong with taking it. Just like how there’s nothing wrong with drinking alcohol, but when you are chronically abusing it, then it is a problem.
As someone who struggled with severe adderall addiction, I really feel bad for her. It’s a miserable, devastating drug to come off. I cannot imagine being a celebrity, having my face plastered all over tabloids during recovery. It’s honestly disgusting what the media does to these young actors
I'm actually surprised how people manage to get addicted to this stuff.Two or three experiences with those terrible withdrawal symptoms made me quit.Sure, it feels really good when you re on it, but damn, once its out of your system you feel like banging your head on the walls.

Even the relatively "tame" drugs by our current standards, I'm trying to end all outside influences I don't need, not that it's easy or anything, precisely the opposite. Idk if others are perfectly able to manage their use but it feels like to me that any small amount starts you down a path and with access to other stuff I just don't know what'd happen, I'm perfectly happy living a mostly sober life and just not thinking about what's causing my problems, it's always up to me.

It's genuinely sad because underneath her attractiveness, she was a genuinely talented actress.
I do believe that she can bring herself back from what she has been going through, but I think an important part of what allows her to shine through with her talents is that she needs "structure" in her life.
She needs help with organizing her days and activities, she needs to keep herself busy with work and activities that keep her brain busy and constructive with less time to concentrate on destructive activities. I'm not saying she should become an obsessive workaholic either, but even if she had personal time that was structured like planned vacations or hobbies that required a structure of planning, organization, and activity, I really think it would just help her find a little more peace and comfort within herself.
Living a life filled with structure like that is absolutely not for everyone, but I think with people who struggle in the way that Amanda has with her own life, I genuinely think it would help her regain so much control over her own life and allow her to feel more empowered within herself.

I feel bad for her, she was an idol of mine growing up, me and a few kids used to always talk about her show on the bus. She went through some rough stuff and it is sad she has not pulled herself up or had anyone help her.

Hot take. She would have been crazy regardless. Her problem didn't seem to be the fame it was how she reacted to the fame. A girl as pretty as her, sadly, would have gotten attention to a much higher level than most girls. This felt pretty inevitable to me because this is the story of almost every pretty girl that isn't given a good support system.

A job keeps you too busy to allow a nihilistic life outlook or lack of purpose to take hold. About 2 years after graduating college, I spent about a year and a half jobless, and I was fairly happy but ended up stagnating somewhat. I played more more video games, spent more time on UA-cam, etc. I didn't have the discipline to do what I really wanted to do, which was to create stuff. There was no excuse, just lack of motivation. So I went back to work but still long for that magic combination of purpose, free time, and self-discipline to do the things I truly want to do. I enjoy video games and other forms of entertainment, but it it's very difficult to balance those with things that are more fulfilling. Being productive through our own freedom to do whatever we want is very difficult.
But yeah, addictions can mess a person up. They can take any notion of purpose and meaning and flush them down the drain.

My sister in law is schizophrenic/bipolar and shes roughly in the same boat. Shes good when shes on her meds but when shes not, all hell breaks loose
This also doesn't say that she has confirmed schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. And is probably not being treated for it and the substance abuse makes treatment not work as well as exacerbates her symptoms.

It becomes a problem when you become a daily user. I used to work in a head shop and a lot of the customers would become aggressive when they wouldn’t be able to access either cannabis or synthetic cannabinoids - as soon as it would have such a hold on them that they can’t relax or chill without it - I would consider it a problem. There are exceptions where some people can function normally and are even more productive on pot, and it’s certainly a better alternative to SSRI’s for people with PTSD (for example). I think that if you also have an underlying mental illness (schizophrenia or bipolar disorder), it can be very damaging. I grew up watching Amanda, with her funny personality and always thought she is gorgeous inside and out. She became bored and depressed. Made mistakes like the rest of us because why? She's human too. So instead of making the problem worse by antagonizing and criticizing what she already knows, let's support her in the idea that it's OK to fall down and get back up. We all fall down sometimes.

Cannabis can trigger immediate schizophrenia in people who are genetically inclined to develop it. Considering her life went to hell immediately after smoking cannabis, and because her life continued to be psychotic even after stopping drug use, she probably has untreated bipolar or schizophrenia.
Cannabis doesn't cause these symptoms in the vast majority of the population.
I think that kind of discounts the benefits marijuana can have. I think people are too casual about it and the possible effects it can have on them, but it can also be really helpful for certain people. I have severe insomnia (I used to average like 3-4 hours of sleep at night for years, despite following all of the recommendations for improving sleep quality), and the only thing that helps me sleep outside of stuff like ambien (which is MUCH worse than weed in regards to side effects) is marijuana. I went from being so sleep deprived my body was struggling to function, to the point where I dropped to 85 lbs due to my stomach refusing to function, to sleeping 8 hours a night and being able to drive, hold a steady job, take classes, and so on.
and honestly, alcohol is a lot worse. It can actually kill you, and while smoking weed too much isn't good for you, it's nowhere near as bad as alcohol addiction. I like beer as much as the next person, but logically if we're going after addictive substances for the danger they pose to people, alcohol should be first lol

I mean retiring that young leads to roughly 60+ years of nothing. It’s so important to keep a job to keep you active mentally and possibly physically . I see it all the time. Stay at home mothers who very late in life have regrets of not doing more in their life time, not having an occupation, etc. Also very important to ward away dementia.

Her being a girl had a big impact on how she ended up addicted to drugs… she was hyper fixated on what the media said about her looks and that’s what led her to try adderall in the first place, to lose weight. It’s a cruel thing.

Most of the smartest people in the history of the world were addicted to something…cocaine, speed(like meth or Ritalin and adderal) and don’t get me started on alcohol, opiates, weed or hallucinogens…they all don’t end up walking the street shoeless…
@@namethefifth7315 The main reason why people start doing drugs are either they feel depressed and wish to experience some form of enjoyment or they are heavily pressured by individuals in their social groups to try it out. All it takes is one trip to start a craving.

8:15 - By no means am I defending people who commit or have committed DUI's, however I want to mention if you have never used a breathalyzer to understand how your body absorbs the alcohol you drink, you will certainly be surprised how fast the 0.08 (The typical legal limit in the US) comes up after a beer and a half, but the person is completely still fully functional and even may not feel any of the effects of the beer.
Let alone the 0.06 for a DWI. The point is, it's almost impossible to have two beers (Maybe even one for people on the small side), let alone hard liquor and still be under the legal limit, so getting a DUI isn't a perfect indicator for negligence as in many cases it is a situation of ignorance. I know nothing of Amanda's story, but it's possible she had 2 beers, could do a handstand for 20 seconds, play proper chess, and still be blowing above the legal limit. Do I think that's the case for this one, by the looks of her hotel room, nope.
I own a breathalyzer which we use after a night out if anyone drove just to logically ensure that someone is legally okay to drive, rather than their lack of physical impedance or count of drinks. I have never had a DUI/DWI, so it has worked for me and friends thus far.
