    I loved Dune on the Sega CD so much as a kid that when they were clearing it out in the store, I bought a second copy just in case I accidentally scratched my original copy.

    Man, the pixel art in this game is gorgeous and it really does seem like there's a lot of in-depth stuff to these mechanics. I'd love to see a new and original IP try out some of the things you highlighted here!

    I played it as a 90's kid, and the most hilarious thing is that I loved this game so much that when I won the game I didn't know any english or knew anything about the book or movie, I inferred the meaning of words from actions taken and moved on through trial and error to greening up the planet and beating harkonnen's castle. To be completely honest with this kind of imagery it wasn't hard to figure out who the bad guys are.

    This is a great video St1ka !
    I think it's my favourite of yours so far.
    The connection you made to Dunes art direction with french science fiction comics and animation at the time was definitely spot on and as a fan of all that stuff I was definitely glad to see it made.

    It's the only game I know of that pulled off a perfect mix of point-n-click adventure, storyline, strategy/empire management, and great progressive character development, how Paul the Hapless Noob turns into Muad'Dib the powerful Fremen warlord with telepathic communication.

    This game is unforgettable. My only regret, well, aside from never completing it because I was too young and it wasn't in my language, is that I used to play it on a 386 with grayscale VGA so I missed on how amazingly colored it is. Also no sound card, so no music either.

    It probably wouldn't take much to make it a harder game. It could be as simple as just inflating the quantity of spice demanded by the emperor by a fixed percentage for each difficulty tier. Less resources left over after for fighting etc. With that said I haven't played this game through fully yet. I played the Amiga version solidly for about four or five days until I beat it. I’d play the intro in the morning so I could listen to the music whilst getting ready for school, then when I got home I’d fire it up and play it every night until I beat it.
    When I was done I felt like I had lived in Paul Atreides’ world, like my experiences whilst playing Dune were real memories. It was such a surreal feeling, a result of the immersiveness of the game and the - as you describe - “dreamlike” otherworldly music.

    Another blend of strategy with other genres, also on MS-DOS, is "J.R.R. Tolkien's War in Middle Earth". Star Control 2 is way too well known for me to have to mention, in regard to hybrid titles for home computers. Another RTS that comes to mind is "Carrier Command". You're right! Specially Jagged Alliance 2 nails this kind of strategy mixed with characters' progression (in this case more like an RPG than a point and click), and like Dune also tries to be realistic about not abstracting some mechanics into the interface but rather incorporating them into the game world. For example, you have to bring a character to the airfield to pick up the shippings that you buy.

      The game's RTS elements are seriously unbalanced though. A competent playthrough will see you make maybe one purchase of an orni at a smuggler's because later you find more gear than you can allocate and even while turning almost every encountered Fremen into a recruit, you will likely be drowning in spice with five or six crews working it. And ecology is completely useless. As soon as you have a couple of military experts, Zerg rushing Harkonnen fortresses is a walk in the park.

    I like Cryo's adventure games. I like their stuff with their gorgeous, stylized pixel art like this Dune title and Lost Eden (where is this kind of pixel art in today's indie games!?), and I like their pre-rendered 3D ones too. That old-school, hella uncanny CGI is just charming and weird to me, I dunno. Early CG has such a cool unreal nature to it, and games like Atlantis: The Lost Empire or Faust. I know Adventure Game fans tend to find them... not great, but screw that - they look cool :) And have great soundtracks! I love the old cartoon Reboot too; _fite me, internet adventure game reviewers!_ :P
    Anyway, this was a cool one to talk about. Not nearly enough people do and yet every time I've seen it, that pixel art _really_ pushes my buttons. It's such a neat, interesting little curio. And you're totally right about French sci-fi art. At least Moebius has influenced his fair share of _Japanese_ games like Gravity Rush and Paladin's Quest, but yeah, I'd like to see more games adopt that kind of aesthetic. I usually liked "French Cartoony" style too - the swirly motif in titles like Rayman 2, Kya Dark Lineage or Pankapu always gives 'em away (seriously; they love painting swirly clouds or swirly foliage; it's neat). Would like to see that in games more today.

      Cryo has some stunning art when they put their minds to it. It's just a shame most of their games have turned out kinda poor imo.

      The game only somewhat covers certain segments of the book. It's definitely not a faithful adaptation story-wise. But it does capture that intangible feeling of mysticism the book has. (I'm also a big fan of the Dune book) :D

    I really hoped that the new Dune movie will adapt some (a lot) of the music here, but that did not happen. So, basically, quite the whole World likes the new Dune movie except me, since there is no music brought from this brilliant game.

      Yeah sadly I doubt they would care about the first dune game:/

    And in hideo kojima's cyberpunk project game, Snatchers, one of the important characters looks JUST like Sting from Dune and it always creeps me out. Great vid though. This game is a part of history.

      Sadly, I've never played Snatcher. I really should correct that at some point D:

    I.. remember trying Dune.. 2 from some abandonware site ages ago, but the AI opponent just kicked my a*s immediately lol. XD

      @st1ka  4 роки тому

      Oh if you're playing Dune 2 I have a recommendation that should make the game much easier:
      If you position your units in a tactical way (like in the corner of enemy buildings) you can get the enemy AI to shoot at its own base. When you do that, the game becomes much easier.

      @@st1ka Lol really? I'm not a big fan of cheesing (too much) the AI tho.
      Btw it was like 15+ years ago, I should try these games again at some point.

    I've played it back in the 90s and I recently picked it up again from a thrift store!

      Ooh score! I sadly don't have a physical edition of this game. I'd like to track down a complete Big Box copy.

      @dvdkolk 4 роки тому

      @@st1ka it was only a jewel case copy not a big box unfortunately. Can't play it either because I don't have a dvd drive on my pc any more. This was the only time I've seen so many pc games at that store as well as I picked up Shivers, 7th guest (also jewelcase) and a big (but very smoke discolored) big box of Star Trek: a final unity.

      Yeah that might work. I do plan on upgrading my PC in the near future, but I'll probably keep using a DVD drive.
