This was a great list! I grew up without the 32-bit generation entirely, so it's been so much fun seeing all of these games that I missed out on. Battle Blues and Hell Night really stood out to me, the latter especially because it has the same unsettling vibe that mainline Shin Megami Tensei games have, but with a more grounded sort of vibe. I subscribed and can't wait to watch more of your videos!
Stopping by to say I really love your channel, one of my favorites in a long time, as most retro stuff has been done over and over, I find you unique. Keep up the good content, I'll keep watching.
Hell Night (also known as Dark Messiah in Japan) was by far the most terrifying PS1 game I've ever played. The game uses sound queues in a way that makes it to where you need to REALLY listen. I even ended up cheesing the monster a few times by going in a room to reset where it would appear a few times. It helps the graphics give that uncanny valley vibes to it. Such a gem.
Great video! So many awesome games-I now need to try out Septerra Core and Battle Blues. I also appreciate the Shiren 2 love ❤️ such a fun game, and I’m glad the English fan patch is doing well!
Battle Blues looks interesting. Almost the entire 3DO's library is hidden gems. So many unique games. I'll have to check it out, I've never heard of this one.
Great video! For The Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road, the music was made by Hitoshi Sakimoto, Michiko Naruke and Masaharu Iwata which is a winning combo. I would add Guardian's Crusade and Mega Man: Battle & Chase to this list. They are both great games. Guardian's Crusade has a very cartoonish, almost playdough like visual style, but it is colourful and has great locations. The music slaps and while the story is simple, it feels like a fairytale. When travelling through the overworld, there are a few ways to travel with one way being painfully slow, but is needed to travel across water and the other which comes later in the game is really cool and takes away the need for the prior option. The battle system relies on you feeding you taking care of 'Baby' who is your dragon which has powers as well as using what is known as Living Toys. They are summons and each one has its own power whether it be status, damage or healing related. Mega Man: Battle & Chase was the first 3D Mega Man game and unfortunately came out at a time when people were burnt out when it came to Kart racers despite being released before Mario Kart 64. The visuals are great for the time having a lot of colour and detail in each of the racers and the background visuals. The music was composed by Yoshinori Ono who although didn't make music for Capcom regularly, he produced one heck of a soundtrack. The gameplay is like if you took the core idea of Mega Man where you have to beat a boss to get their power, but turn it into a race and if you win you can choose which part of the defeated bosses kart that you want to take. This can lead to some really cool upgrades and if you get all of the individual parts by beating the boss on multiple completed playthroughs of the game, you gain access to taking the body of their car which gives you access to their powers while still retaining the character that you chose. The game does suffer with not having a standard drift system and the courses can be a bit narrow in areas with not as much creativity in the course layout as a Mario Kart game, but the rest of the game makes this a great playthrough.
One thing about the Nintendo 64: Yes it is a 64 bit system but developers prefer using 32 bit instructions and calculations due to being faster than 64bit and most likely also for compatibility reasons with the Playstation and Saturn at some extent. I think one of the few games that uses actual 64bit instructions was Conker Bad Fur Day. Most games on the N64 ran at 32bit instructions so is correct including them here, but at the same time is kinda weird since until very recent years we totally phased out 32bit systems in favor of actual 64bit systems, at the end of the day the bit thingy was more of a marketing standpoint after the PS1/N64/Saturn era rather than actually talking about the console capabilities.
As a software developer, I must note that this is largely irrelevant as the usability of 64-bit instructions over 32-bit ones is extremely situational and dwarfed by other graphics or audio acceleration features. N64 hardware, while more powerful overall, has pitfalls that make it somewhat inferior to even the older PS1. Saturn also has larger total performance but lower practical performance than PS1 unless you basically build a game around exploiting all its 2D&DSP power and then you don't necessarily obtain a *good* game and it is then of course not portable, except to much more powerful hw.
@@napoleonfeanor RAM is extremely slow, at the Point that some assets are better loading directly from cartridge rather than RAM, and the cache was so small so thats why a lot of games had blurry textures. Also loading from cartridges meant that the video qualities were dwarfed to accomodate space, RE2 suffered from this also not longer games that PS1 had due to multidisc factor.
I love Mystery Dungeon in general, from the OG Toroneko to Nightmare of Druaga, Chocobo, Pokemon etc. If you're into that kinda stuff and want something new, I also highly recommend checking out the modern indie Tangledeep.
I loved the Wizard of Oz game! It was so much fun, and I loved the character interpretations of the Scarecrow and Tin Man. The trackball moving style was unique, and I got used to it very quickly. Thanks so much for including it here, because more people need to know about it and try it out for themselves.
Cannot have enough PS1 content, kudos for St1ka... NesClone could be my first console, but PS1 trully the one that shaped my gaming taste with its variety of genre
@@st1ka Never thought about that, I always though european usually have better circumstances so they could afford better entertaniment than us living in 3rd world country in the 90s (its more like 80s to be frank, pc are none to found ,console starts to gain attention for children with 8-bit clone console, I even got my NesClone in 94 and my PS1 in Feb 2000, only play genesis occasionally at my friends and neighbour house, we are just like a decade left compared to other parts of the world)
@@bpcgos oh Portugal was a poor country during the 8-bit generation. Even during the 16 bit generation most kids didn't have games, so bootleg consoles and games were common
Septerra Core is indeed a hidden gem, played back in our college days in the 99-2000. Still playing to this day, heck we even buy the steam version again. the story is so good and unique. Really recommends it
every time one of your videos randomly finds me, im surprised at how good you are at digging up random games. i literally only knew 2 games on this list: keio and bulk slash
I absolutely agree, but sadly that hiatus was always going to happen. The minute 3D became the hot new thing, the general gaming crowds attitude got actively HOSTILE against 2D. If it was 2D it was oldfashioned and regressive, the people saw Polygons and it hit them like crack cocaine- if the paying audience isn't there anymore, most studios sadly had to move on.
@@goranisacson2502I still like 2d. In fact, I was hoping, back then, that the introduction of cds would lead to really giant, long, and detailed 2d games. We got a few of those in rpg format, but I was hoping to get games like that in other formats as well. Not a CD game, but Mischeif Makers on n64 was something like what I was hoping for more of, though that game wasn't especially long. I think it was the fault of game reviewers more than fans, and the game reviewers often influenced the fans. Reviewers were really dumb back then. They still are, of course, as not much as changed as far as that goes.
St1ka you tricked me! I was told this video would contain games I've never played yet I distinctly recall having played Keio Flying Squadron 2, Hell Night, Bulk Slash, and Steam Hearts.
There's nothing "suggestive" about Steam Hearts, it's exactly what you see. After all it was made by Giga, one of the more prominent eroge developers in the industry. It takes place in a world where people are infected with a behavior changing virus, and your 2 sibling protagonists are the only ones that are immune. They set out to cure the infection (by making love to the affected girls) The Saturn version is slighly toned down, though not by much. But the gameplay is definitely superior compared to the PC-98 and PC-Engine version
Most x64 PC and console games use 32 bit ops as well. You generally don't want to waste time dealing with 64 bit long ops when you don't absolutely need to.
@@scheeseman486 There is no clear distinction. Is it system/video bus size, CPU bus size, CPU ISA register size with or without DSP/SIMD extensions, CPU ALU size.. SNES has 8-bit cartridge & CPU bus yet considered 16-bit.. PC Engine called 16-bit because of video bus width somewhere, but then PS2 GPU allegedly has 2560bit bus.. Intel Pentium MMX has 64-bit data bus *and* 64-bit instructions yet not called 64-bit CPU until several generations later..
@@st1ka Give it a try, it's part of the Simple Series so it's simple and short, but it can be very fun. It's basically a board game and worth trying with one or more friends. It has a lot of RNG so not all matches will be good.
I never seen these games before back in my childhood in the early 2000s. I must have missed these games already and those video games looks very Exciting to play. All i know was NES and Game boy games but i can finally play some of This cool games for the very first time on my phone for a emulator 🎮😊
This is quite good. 32 and 64 Bit era was when I was old enough to buy my own console from earning pocket money from my parents at the time. So I have nostalgia from this era of gaming the most because it was the 90s and it was just after the 16 bit era for some of these games, while others are from the 16 bit era but enhanced by CD technology like the SEGA CD and Turbo-CD addon that was the PC Engine CD in Japan. Seeing Japanese Anime games from this era feels like they should have made OVAs out of the source of those games. So therefore they count as 32-bit games due to the enhanced power of CD-addon technology despite their obvious limitations with FMV videos.
Thank you so much. I owned a copy of ODT back in the day, and forced myself to finish it over a summer, due to not having any other new games. It was both a chore and an accomplishment. Fast forward to today, and I have spent the past several years trying to remember what this game was. At this point I had thought I had actually hallucinated it or something. Once again, thank you for proving I was not crazy.
02:48 - Keio Flying Squadron 2 (Sega Saturn) 05:09 - Septerra Core (PC) I've played both of 'em, and they're great. Especially Keio i've played over and over again like Parodius Deluxe.
Battle Blues looks awsome, its one of the coolest looking games ive ever seen on the 3DO. This, Lucienne's Quest, and Guardian War are the 3DO titles that appeal most to me.
Played one game featured on release (Septera Core) and was playing another game for the first time (Silent Bomber) when I fired up your video. Love your selections
I like the soundtrack in Septerra Core. It's by Bungie vets Marty O'Donnell and Mike Salvatori, and if you listen close you'll also hear the voice acting talents of Steve Downes.
SepterraCore is a deep cut, i got this in a bargain bin at toys r us for like 5 bucks loved ever min of it and barely hear anyone talk about it good job man
Have you played Growlanser? It has a branching story, a personality system that impacts the plot (I haven't seen anything like it, even in modern games), multiple endings (Atlus says 50 but I think they're exaggerating a little), 5 romancable party members (with multiple routes each i think?), and fun strategy gameplay. (for some reason You can also build your own town as an optional thing too) The music, art and writing are really good and the story made me cry over 10 times for being so heartfelt and tragic. Satoshi Urushihara (legendary erotic artist) did the character art. It's both sexy and cool. The game is so good, but nobody knows it! The first disc has an English fan translation.
Thanks for the Wizard of Oz recommendation it was a pretty fun game, i played around 28 hours approximately and i did really adore the graphics and artstyle being Autum map the best of the four seasons. Wish you the best and hope to see more videos like this.
@@st1ka And with the quality appropriate for this meme. (separately liked many things about it, but it wasted too much of my time on vapid story and slow combat)
props to you for Silent Bomber. I had it and it was awesome. sadly it suffered from a horrid bug that blocked the loading of the next level after a specific boss fight. only after internet came in my life that I discovered the bug could be skipped by... skipping the cutscene.
Hey St1ka, it's me again, I just beat O.D.T., and I gotta say, your review convinced me to play the game in the first place and I ended up liking it quite a bit, even though it's a very unpolished gem, it's a game that desperately needs a remake to realize the developer's original vision.
You're one of the only channels that covers games that I actually own... Most of my giant collections consist of games most people go "What the heck is that??? I've never played that..." 👍
Killing Time is a masterpiece. Played maybe 5 years ago for the first time through the emulation and has a blast. PC port is a completely different game
O.D.T. is one of my favorite games, there is a PC version available on Steam and GOG too. Great game, I wish someone would remaster it already and give us some improvements like an increased draw distance.
Septerra Core was the first PC game I ever bought (along with Age of Empires II) for my first PC. still vividly remember having trouble installing quicktime and almost giving up because i was a dumb kid. so glad i persevered.
11:06 Mine too! and its also my favorite I also love that the first R-type final (and it says something that we now have 3 R-type final games, well, one has yet to release) has a specific shout out to it! Spoilers for a schmup (which might actually mean something for people like me who do enjoy Schmups with more story to them) but one of the ships you can pick will not make it out of the final boss intact due to its stats (funny enough, my favorite ship) come R-type final, one of the many routes you can end up going down has you running into that very same ship, now corrupted due to being stuck behind at the end of delta. edit: and yes, the ending does change based on which ship you used, though as far as I know its only the one that fails to escape. Also, if anyone enjoys good schmups and side mech-based contra-likes sheck out the Astro Saga games on steam, a series of Schmups all set in the same universe, with each subsequent game adding more story, interconecting events from previous games, etc; The universe's timeline starting with a cheesy 70s voltes V style super robot schmup and cartoony antics... and then following up with real robot style plots building up from the after effect of having literal super robot and alien technology around.
@@st1ka There was a sequel, also on the psp I think, Japan only had the subtitle "Operation Bitter Chocolate" or something along those lines you can find its kickass intro video on youtube Both 1 and 2 are getting steam re-releases/remakes under the name R-type Tactics I-II Cosmos.

Have you played Deep Fear for the Sega Saturn? It was WAY ahead of its time as a Survival Horror game and had some really crazy ideas as well as AMAZINGLY awful voice acting.
I saw Ross Scott make a video about Killing Time. Seriously, that game is really impressive. Majorly flawed, but holy cow you get all these digitized cutscenes in the levels themselves! And the overall design is incredibly immersive and ahead of its time! It's a shame it never got enough love for someone to go back and make a "definitive edition" that combines the strengths of the PC and 3DO versions, as well as fixing up some of the other flaws...
@@st1ka It has a pretty interesting development history. It almost didn't come out and the development team worked on it for a while while they were all unemployed after the original publisher shut down while they looked for a new publisher to fund the project.
Great video. I am also getting more and more to 32 bit games… I would recommend the game Casper on 3DO,SS or psx. Also like very much Crusader No Remorse on the SS, PSX and PC. For the third one I would recommend Legend of Oasis 2 on the SS, it’s like a Zelda clone. Not very well known games that never got big scores but I love them. Grande abraço

Battle Blues and Hell Night really stood out to me, the latter especially because it has the same unsettling vibe that mainline Shin Megami Tensei games have, but with a more grounded sort of vibe.
I subscribed and can't wait to watch more of your videos!

Awesome and criminally underrated channel. I discovered a lot of great games from these videos. Good job!
Thank you ^^
Hell Night (also known as Dark Messiah in Japan) was by far the most terrifying PS1 game I've ever played. The game uses sound queues in a way that makes it to where you need to REALLY listen. I even ended up cheesing the monster a few times by going in a room to reset where it would appear a few times. It helps the graphics give that uncanny valley vibes to it. Such a gem.

Battle Blues looks interesting. Almost the entire 3DO's library is hidden gems. So many unique games. I'll have to check it out, I've never heard of this one.
Oh yeah the 3do has a pretty interesting library and it does not deserve the hate it gets
Ooh thank you for the recommendations. I'll add them to my list
Yep that's a good point
As a software developer, I must note that this is largely irrelevant as the usability of 64-bit instructions over 32-bit ones is extremely situational and dwarfed by other graphics or audio acceleration features. N64 hardware, while more powerful overall, has pitfalls that make it somewhat inferior to even the older PS1. Saturn also has larger total performance but lower practical performance than PS1 unless you basically build a game around exploiting all its 2D&DSP power and then you don't necessarily obtain a *good* game and it is then of course not portable, except to much more powerful hw.
@noop9k which parts of the N64 hardware were worse? Curious as it came considerably later and games usually looked better although not by much
@@napoleonfeanor RAM is extremely slow, at the Point that some assets are better loading directly from cartridge rather than RAM, and the cache was so small so thats why a lot of games had blurry textures.
Also loading from cartridges meant that the video qualities were dwarfed to accomodate space, RE2 suffered from this also not longer games that PS1 had due to multidisc factor.
@@ppprime98K no wonder they released a ram upgrade then. And so did Sega, which allowed for great 2D on Saturn.

I loved the Wizard of Oz game! It was so much fun, and I loved the character interpretations of the Scarecrow and Tin Man. The trackball moving style was unique, and I got used to it very quickly. every time one of your videos randomly finds me, im surprised at how good you are at digging up random games. i literally only knew 2 games on this list: keio and bulk slash
thank you! I try to look for the lesser known stuff ^^
KEIO looks so damned good! Imagine if 2D didn't take a 20 year hiatus. Castlevania SOTN & Keio could have been the dawn of a golden age
Agreed completely
If you only played 4 out of 17 games it sounds like the title spoke the truth 😎

Yeah but that's not as catchy :P
@@st1ka Well, that's true, all things are permissible if they lead to catchiness.

Well I did have to censor it a bit and I have to be careful with my wording on this platform or I could get the video taken down 😅
Well that's a given for sure, but it's hard not to be specific when one is describing an eroge

There is a PC version of Killing Time as well and can be easily bought these days on most online stores.
Yeah but the PC version is an almost entirely different game
I think 32 bit generation was likely the time when I was the most influenced by gaming
Bulk Slash remains a favourite, and always appreciate more people talking about Stellar Assault!

Which sentinel? The remake of the 8-bit 3D game? Played the PC version, never finished but it was a cool, trippy puzzle game.
Battle Blues looks awsome, its one of the coolest looking games ive ever seen on the 3DO. This, Lucienne's Quest, and Guardian War are the 3DO titles that appeal most to me.
Yeah the 3do actually sold decently in Japan so it got a pretty healthy amount of Japan-only games

SepterraCore is a deep cut, i got this in a bargain bin at toys r us for like 5 bucks loved ever min of it and barely hear anyone talk about it good job man
I got it for free from a gaming magazine and loved it
Have you played Growlanser? It has a branching story, a personality system that impacts the plot (I haven't seen anything like it, even in modern games), multiple endings (Atlus says 50 but I think they're exaggerating a little), 5 romancable party members (with multiple routes each i think?), and fun strategy gameplay. (for some reason You can also build your own town as an optional thing too)
The music, art and writing are really good and the story made me cry over 10 times for being so heartfelt and tragic. Satoshi Urushihara (legendary erotic artist) did the character art. It's both sexy and cool.
The game is so good, but nobody knows it! The first disc has an English fan translation.

I also love that the first R-type final (and it says something that we now have 3 R-type final games, well, one has yet to release) has a specific shout out to it!
Spoilers for a schmup (which might actually mean something for people like me who do enjoy Schmups with more story to them)
but one of the ships you can pick will not make it out of the final boss intact due to its stats (funny enough, my favorite ship)
come R-type final, one of the many routes you can end up going down has you running into that very same ship, now corrupted due to being stuck behind at the end of delta.
edit: and yes, the ending does change based on which ship you used, though as far as I know its only the one that fails to escape.
