I was glad to see Cian on some reasonable form today. He had pure determination to contribute today, it was all over his face. Once he started going backward from the break it was time to pull off. I do think he waited just a little too long, but I appreciate his tenacity to serve the team.
One thing for sure about this race is we have seen what Ben O'Connor's ceiling is. If there was any question if could be be a legit GC contender, well we've seen it, as he's been giving it all he's got. Tomorrow certainly is the day of days for Ben. I think tomorrow will be his last day starting in the red. The team bosses have to be happy to have gotten lots of attention in this race.
I remember watching it at the time, up the Cuitu Negru, Dario Cataldo winning, the final climb seemed to go on for ever, with the commentator describing it as the slowest end to a stage they had ever seen ! Good replay to watch
Yeah, I'll be sad for him, but I hope he's gearing up to enjoy his last day in red as much as possible. I think he's already gotten much further in it than he expected!
Thanks Chris, the strategy of VLB to ride for WVA up the final climb to try and tire out Groves was reasonable but it was not a steep enough climb to blow the legs of Groves who went over the top along with his whole train and then it was a certainty of being a field sprint. By 'wasting' the energy of the team supporting WVA by pacing the whole peloton up the long climb (including a turn by Kuss) it seems that VLB have all but ruled out any attempt by the team and Kuss to try hard on tomorrow's hard mountain stage. Nope IMO Ben cannot hold on to the Red tomorrow
I keep saying that Groves is a much better climber than people give him credit for and certainly better than you'd expect from such a powerful sprinter.
Visma was never trying to drop Kaden on the final climb. They were only trying to go fast enough to bring the break back and hope to make it a field sprint. Visma is not afraid of the head to head battle of Kaden versus Wout and would (I bet) like to have Kaden there after the climb so that his team would help control the peloton into the sprint. 🤔🦋💪👊

With that %6 grade leading to the finish, it must feel like a bad dream; the harder you pedal, the slower the finish line approaches. The big guy almost took another stage.
Tomorrow is going to be another lovely mountain stage starting at 30Km. Ben better have solid legs or rely on another Roglic´s bad back day, probably jersey change. 19Km at 7.4% finish looks more like a rocket launch pad!!!!!! Oh I love this 2024 Vuelta
Hi I found this channel during Tour de France and it’s helping me to understand cycling but I don’t understand many things still… Can I get some insight / explanation on how come certain teams are able to have the breakaway on a close leash and other teams allow the breakaway to win the stage with such huge time gap
Yes. I assume you’re talking about Ag2R and possibly the comparison to Visma today. If so, here you go. Ag2R: Care only about protecting the red leaders jersey. They would only chase the break if a rider in the break is high on GC (general classification) and a threat to take the GC lead from Ben O’Connor. Which was not the case today as no one the break was close in time to Ben’s lead. Visma: Today saw an opportunity at a chance to win today’s stage so they worked all day long to bring the break back and give Wout (their Sprinter) a chance to win another stage (he has three already). 🤔👊🦋
The classification of some of the climbs in the Vuelta is baffling. The last climb on Stage 13, which completely blew up the GC was classified as Cat 1, which seemed appropriate considering it was a double digit gradient for 5 km. But then, we find that the second (and main) climb on Stage 14 on which almost no one - including the sprinters - got dropped is also a Cat 1 despite not having any gradient more than 5%.
I'm hoping Enric Mas can return to the form he had a couple days ago to keep things interesting. He doesn't seem to have great team support and he would need at least 30-45 sec on Roglic in Madrid to have a chance at beating him in the GC. Roglic wins if he can keep the rubber side down and doesn't blow up :-)

With WVA already having the green jersey, why would Visma spend a lot of energy to catch the break? Wouldn't it be easier to just let them go and just focus on staying ahead of the #2 guy in the green jersey competition? Or is a stage win more important?
