As soon I saw six Belgian riders on the front, Netherland riders around still, and with DePlus in the break still. I said Pogi blew it and he may as well wait until year. Slovenia better hope Roglic is good. Then Remco attacking so soon with a 55” gap still and at the summit of the first climb. I thought, maybe Pogi maybe. Did no one in the race watch Montreal and learn anything from that race tactically. 😂🦋🇨🇦👊🌈

    • @milhouse53
      @milhouse53 2 місяці тому +19

So all that meant simply that Tadej did not trust Roglic. He decided to ride away because Novak was done and now it was either Rogla helps riding the front or Belgium would. BELGIUM and NED are looking at two Slovenians like..hey Chris Horner keeps saying you are #1 and 3 so go ahead!
POG had no choice he had to go..otherwise it would he a slow riding for up to 20km left and then breakaway can be still 2 min ahead. 9:38

Their knuckleheadism neutralized Pogi's knuckleheadism. This has to be the greatest season of all time. I think that's the main issue once you are in the second group. The favorite doesn't want to tow everyone and the non favorite won't ride for them either. So that's why this start and stop. Again and again... If only Remco, MVDP and WVA then.. yes they will work together. But not when they are with the non favorites in a group of more than 5.

Nobody wants to work to catch him because he can sprint. It’s different when you think you have a chance to win, but why work & drag everyone else too, only to get torched in the eventual sprint. Pog’s year was helped when everybody else went down in Spain & that crash made what should have been a competitive and exciting year, one of the most boring in recent memory. Tip of the hat if you like it. But I’m still struggling to get excited about a race where a guy goes up the road with >80k to go every single time & wins

I doubt it. He doesn't need to. Check the course, it is tailor made for him this year. He just needs to ride tempo till Sormano then do that Pog move 2 km into it, slap a minute onto everyone atop and then cruise to the finish. And even if some unlikely hero somehow manages to keep up with him there is also that little bump at San Fermo where Pog can again crush them.
Honestly, if Pog is in form, barring some freak stuff, I dont see how he could lose that.

It was a crazy move from Pogačar. But it was probably the best he could do for a chance at the title. Because Sloveniens were weak, Roglič was unusable for the job of a domestic player, and opponents started to go away. No one in the peloton would be able to catch them, so Pogačar would have to control all the riders himself. And that is not possible. But since Tratnik was in front (which is a good tactic) it wasn't so bad to jump to the front. If the Tratnik be in the peloton, he would also drag his opponents, who would rest and then start anyway. This is how Pogačar avoided further brakes, forced the opponent to work much earlier than they thought, so they were tired in the end. Of course, with a stronger team, a different tactic would have been better for Tadej, but with what he had at his disposal, it was probably the best he could do in the end if he wanted to have any chance of fighting for the title. And that was greit for us, viewers to see a battle of favorites. Otherwise, the race would simply be won by some second-rate driver, whom the favorites would let pass.
Pogačar was obviously also lucky with Sivakov. Evenepoel was clearly not in form and the absence of Van Aert also took its toll. If Belgium were stronger, it would be much more difficult for Pogačar. But Van der Poel surprised positively.
In the end it was an amazing race, but as a fan of Pogačar I suffered a lot. That title was terribly important to Tadej. And unfortunately, the opponents relied a lot on that. And so they wouldn't have helped the Pogačars even once, even though that would definitively lose their chance for the title. But with the fact that Evenepoel and Van der Poel already have titles, they could be completely at ease and played the trick.

Actually it wasn't a stupid tactic at all. Our team (Slovenia) did a mistake when they went all out after that Castrillo attack. They said this after the race. They burned 2 domestiques in 500m for no reason, but I think they were afraid the break would make too much of a gap. They couldn't rely on Tratnik to come out on top in that group.
Pogi immediately saw the attacks coming in advance, so he got ahead of the other team's tactics. He had Tratnik ahead and Primož behind in the peloton waiting. When Tratnik did his part, Remco had only Wellens and Van Gils helping him, but both of them fell apart in that first climb. That was game over. Belgians were weak (they missed WVA badly), as were we (Slovenians), but now Pogi created a 2vs1 situation vs the Belgians (Roglič sitting in the back). After that it was all group 2 syndrome.

I think you have a good point here. One thing that played a big role here I think is that for many 'domestiques' the season seemed to be already over - only few showed good form (Mollema, Tratnik). This made many teams rather nervous I guess. The absence of radio communication and country teams made this probably worse. Then we could see (also with the womens race) that it was in fact very difficult to drop the stronger riders. Pogacar dropped all his competitors with his surprise attack - otherwise I doubt he could easily drop Van der Poel, which he certainly wasn't planning to sprint against (just watch his pre race interview when this was asked).

We are witnessing an incredible time in cycling history, and somehow, Pogačar keeps us entertained while killing everyone so dominantly. I'm still a little bent out of shape that he skipped La Vuelta, and think it would have been realistic for him to win all three grand tours and still have a good chance to win the Worlds. Maybe he's just saving that for next year. Anyway, such a fantastic season for this alien from another planet, and he's not even done yet! Finally, it is important to savor these moments, because cycling being the inherently dangerous sport it is, it can all end in an instant. R.I.P. Muriel Furrer. Hot take: Sivakov did the right thing. He would have been dropped way earlier if Pogi didn't wait for him. The only reason he was there is because Pogi was letting him. If Sivakov didn't do a few small pulls then he would have just been dead weight. His only chance was to work with Pogi doing small pulls and hope for a miracle where his legs held on for a podium finish. Just riding Pogi's wheel is what everyone seems to think he should have done but that was not one of his options. Also France didn't really have anything else going on at that point this was their only chance. It's not like dropping back and helping Alaphilippe or something like that was an option.

I mean the france favorite Julian Alaphilippe is crashed out, Chris laport is no where to see, the closest one is Romain Bardet, we all know if Sivakov work with Tadej, he will lose on the line to Tadej for sure, but at least he could get himself a chance on the podium imagine if he pull 20%, Tadej pull 80%, so i don't think that was a knucklehead move; then combining with the "UAE team love", i think it was an intelligent move, just personal reading, correct me if i'm wrong. He's the kind of rider who thrives on turning the unexpected into a winning strategy. And while nobody else dared, he went for it in classic Tadej fashion-bold, aggressive, and always entertaining.
What’s next for him? The big question now is whether he can win all five Monuments. He’s already proven he can dominate races like Liège-Bastogne-Liège and Il Lombardia, so it's not out of the realm of possibility. The challenge will be the cobbled classics like Paris-Roubaix, but if anyone can adapt and rise to the occasion, it's him. The guy's a legend in the making!

I believe Remco didn’t want to let Pogacar gain more time, but I don’t think it would have made a difference. After the climb, the Netherlands, Spain, and the U.S. each had two riders in the group, but everyone was looking to Remco first and Mathieu second, without even taking their turns at the front. I think Remco’s best move would have been to do one strong pull, like he did in the Olympics, and drop them off his wheel. After that, with a small group working together and taking turns, it might have been possible to make a comeback. The only real chance was if there were 5-6 strong riders, each doing their part.

I am sure Tadej knew that too when he launched to bridge. If a newbie race watcher understands such a basic tactic, the greatest cyclist of all time with an insane race sense surely does too. Tadej not for one second even pretended anyone is going to work with him. Him and Tratnik straight up moved to the front and Tadej recovered at P8, and then moved to P2 before attack. There was no flicking of elbows or looking back at the breakaway asking them to set pace.

@@ChrisHornerCyclingit is indeed funny to criticize the only rider who wanted to win and not ride for 2nd or third. You are only mentioning the things Belgium did wrong, but they were the only team who chased Pog for 30km. No other team helped. I understand his frustration. He wants to win, in comparison to the USA, swiss, dutch, italian, spanish,…teams

Even without Wout van Aert, Belgium can't help having bad tactics.

It was not bad tactics. Who in their ride mind would chase Pgacar at 100km? They let him go and he kept them off with 35-60 sec for 86km. That means they had no legs to catch him. His famous: "tactics doesn't do wins, legs do" proven true!

Small correction: van der Poel and Evenepoel looked at each other and believed, rightly so, that Pogačar went too early and would blow up, they didn't deem it wise to jump after him. Fatal, but who could believe it! Not even Pogačar himself...
