  • I purchased my Buck 102 woodsman over three years ago. There are many things that I like about this tool. The fact that this knife is durable, light weight and compact made it particularly attractive to me.

It amazes me how often the 105 Pathfinder gets overlooked; the happy medium between the 102 and 119. It sheds the excess meat of the 119 and gives more purchase for larger hands that the 102 lacks. I always saw the 102 as a youth knife due to it's handle size.

Everything you said is spot on. I've been carrying a Buck 102 now since 1967. The first one used used a lot until 1999, when my truck was broken into and it was among the stuff that was stolen. They didn't get much, it worn down pretty thin by then.
My wife bought me a new one in Christmas 1999, and it's been with me ever since. When I say with me, I mean really, it's my EDC carry. When I retired in 2001, and we moved to Texas, it was on my hip everyday since that is not only legal here, but not even looked at twice. I've never liked folders, especially locking folders like the Buck 110, because I've seen a couple bad incidents where a lock didn't hold up to insane trust and the user got bit bad. If my little keychain penknife won't handle it, it's time for a fixed blade. Like the 102. Like you said, it's soooo light, I don't even notice it behind my right hip, and the sheath rides high enough that it doesn't to hang up on the car seat. But in my retirement I do a lot of fishing with my friends on the banks of the San Gabriel river, and the 102 makes a fine trout and bird knife. Thats 57 years of one brand and model of knife.
The only complaint I had was the handle got slippery when wet. So I roughed it up with some 80 grit sandpaper in a swirl pattern, and it fixed it great, no matter water, food stuff or fish slime.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, this was very informative. My favourite knife store has the 102 Woodsman in the regular 420HC steel as well as S35VN steel so I still need to make a choice there, but it really sounds like the 102 Woodsman is a great option either way.
