Mad props for “Hitch A Ride”. Never gets old… NEVER! Boston and excellence go hand in hand. Second album was just as infectious. Welcome to sonic genius.
You hit the nail on the head!! The sounds of Boston always makes the listener happy. They are always amazing, in all ways! Their sound was so far ahead of their time, as well. Excellent reaction.
This album had dropped just before I left for college in the fall of 78 and I’m cruising along the highway on my out into the world, my first time moving away from home, with this song blasting on my car stereo. It was the single most perfect moment in my life.
Ryan hit the nail on the head. Delp's vocals cut through the guitars more on the first album than on this one. When a band has a vocalist like that, this should never happen. Nonetheless, it's an outstanding classic rock track. Another great one off this album is "A Man I'll Never Be."
Well my dudes I agree with you on Hitch a Ride. my favorite of Boston's many great songs. This one is good and you've got more great music to listen to
A few years ago, I was going through a very difficult period in my life and was struggling each day to keep going. This song was on my playlist and I'd heard it literally hundreds of times by this point, but when doing some yardwork one day, it came on and by the end of the song, a calmness had washed over me. It was like I'd truly heard it for the first time and understood completely the message it was conveying. It helped enable me to let go of the past and move forward.
LOVE THIS SONG!!! I listen to it practically every single day, Monday through Friday, leaving from work as I pull out of the parking lot. Thank you Brad Delp for the stunning vocals.
I am Glad that these 3 guys are getting a first time education in the 70's and 80's Classic Rock. Today's music is good, but the Classic Rock Era is unmatched. Boston is one of the Greatest Bands in the Era of Classic Rock. Boston is one of those bands you don't get tired of listening to over and over again. The band Boston just have that Iconic sound and vibe that is not produced now. Classic Rock will always be in a Class by itself. Everyone keep Rocking to the Classics!!! 🤟🤘🤙👊✊
Boston, just one of my all time favorite bands. Good times, I remember cranking up the stereo listening to Boston, cruising around in my '79 Trans Am, t-tops off.
Good for you Nick…I grew up in the 70’s and followed everyone in rock..Zeppelin, Queen, Aerosmith, Tull, Ozzy with Randy Rhodes, G&R, Oasis, name It…and Tom’s solo in Hitch’n a Ride is my all time favorite.
So cool to watch these kids analyze Boston….All I remember was gettin’ high on $30 lids and me and my friends playin’ Boston on our radios in the woods, with 2 couches and a mattress. Good times! Somehow, we survived and now it’s just many yesterdays, ago…….
Boston came at the height of my teenage years. We would go to a disco called "Gatsby's" in Cincinnati, Ohio and they would always open the night with "Foreplay/Long Time" and it was so bomb! You really need to hear "Feeling Satisfied" for sure!
I bought this in 1978, but I got the cassette because I just started driving. Most parties my senior year in high school, '78/'79, were jamming this tune!
Had their first and second albums when they came out. Also had them on 8 track (I'm old - 63) for the car. This was some of the best cruising music ever!
Scholz and Delp were in many ways painted into a corner by their own success. Boston's sound was so unique and iconic it left them nowhere to go. Any attempts to do something different would not/did not "sound like Boston" enough for their fans, but you can stick to such a narrow road for only so long before you run out of ways to grow and not be repetitive.
I always look for Boston reactions on UA-cam but yours are the best...mostly because you've learned to appreciate them as much as I do! Waiting for the "The Man I'll never be"... Keep up the great work! ❤️
This song is so nostalgic - it just brings those of us who were young when this album came out back to such a simple, happy time. I was 14 and I remember going to buy a Boston t-shirt - black with that album picture on the front - thought I was so cool. lol
I understand the point about the mix, but maybe that's accounted for by the record company releasing it before Tom was completely happy with it, also bearing in mind that Don't Look Back being the last song they recorded for the album? As some others have suggested also on this album is A Man I'll Never Be which, for me, is right up there as potentially Boston's best song. It oozes atmosphere and, shock horror, isn't a happy song! If you take Foreplay/Long Time as separate songs, A Man I'll Never Be is also actually Boston's longest song (c'mon Tom, write a longer one!). It's an absolute classic in my view and the solo gets me every time. Oh, and the bridge into the second chorus is beyond sublime. I'm sure you'll get round to reacting to it eventually so I'll look forward to that day!
I agree about the solo for Hitch a Ride. This is a great song! Pretty good for not being ready! Love the bass line!!! The boom boom back and forth of the bass and drum together. Man - does not get better! Brad's voice just as great! Funny that you said bbq. We used to have block parties and a lot of teen age kids. From Wikipedia: Boston is the debut studio album by American rock band Boston, released on 25 August 1976 by Epic Records. Produced by Tom Scholz and John Boylan, A multi-instrumentalist and engineer who had been involved in the Boston music scene since the late 1960s, Scholz started to write and record demos in his apartment basement with singer Brad Delp, but received numerous rejection letters from major record labels. By 1975, the demo tape had fallen into the hands of CBS-owned Epic Records, who signed them. Defying Epic's insistence on recording the album professionally in Los Angeles, Scholz and Boylan tricked the label into thinking the band was recording on the West Coast, when in reality, the bulk was being tracked solely by Scholz at his Massachusetts home. The album's contents are a complete recreation of the band's demo tape, and contain songs written and composed many years prior. The album's style, often referred to as the "Boston sound", was developed through Scholz's love of classical music, melodic hooks and guitar-heavy rock groups such as the Kinks and the Yardbirds, as well as a number of analogue electronic effects developed by Scholz in his home studio. Besides Scholz, who played most of the instruments on nearly all of the tracks, and Delp, other musicians appear on the album such as drummers Jim Masdea and Sib Hashian, guitarist Barry Goudreau and bassist Fran Sheehan. All except Masdea became full-time band members. The album was released by Epic in August 1976 and broke sales records, becoming the best-selling debut LP in the US at the time, and winning the RIAA Century Award as best selling debut album. The album's singles, most notably "More Than a Feeling" and "Long Time", were both AM and FM hits, and nearly the entire album receives constant rotation on classic rock radio. The album has been referred to as a landmark in '70s rock and has been included on many lists of essential albums. It has sold at least 17 million copies in the United States alone and at least 20 million worldwide making it one of the best selling debut albums of all time.

It took two years for the second album to be released (it felt like three) and fans were getting upset at the band for keeping them hanging. Successful bands didn't wait two years to release another album, so when the album finally arrived in stores it sold quickly.
