I'm grateful that I got to play all these games, and experience that generation as older teenager and young working adult. I was still pretty young that generation, but just old enough to play whatever I wanted at the very beginning of that sixth console generation (DC/PS2/GC/XB). I was born in the early/mid 80s, so not long after the PS2 released I was finally 18 and old enough to be able to buy M rated games like GTA: Vice City and MGS 2:Sons of Liberty (and later San Andreas & Snake Eater) with my own money I earned at my part-time job without my parents needed to be there with a ID.😁 It was amazing: I would go to Battlefield 1942 LAN tournaments all the time and hang out at peoples houses all night and play SoulCalibur II, Sonic Battle, Golden Eye or Halo CE multiplayer/splitscreen. I was able to afford any game I wanted... AND (for the first time in my life) I was able to own all three consoles (skipped Dreamcast) in a generation! I could stay up all night if I wanted (as I did with Sons of Liberty) and play it without having to answer too anyone. But at the same time I was still a young HS/College kid that generation so my responsibilities were limited, and free time abundant. 🎮🤤 I am also grateful to have been that specific age back the when I played all these legendary games. I was young enough for the games to feel impactful and life altering.. but at the same time I was old enough to enjoy all the mature themes and be able notice things I perhaps would not have a bunch of years earlier. Just talking to my little brother about the old days, I am convinced that had I been his age (he was born in early 1990) I feel like I might have not been old enough to really comprehend all these complex themes and notice some of that stuff. And I might have not enjoyed that generation as much. 🤔 I fear had I been your age (1996?) I probably would have been WAY to young at that specific time, to have 100% absorbed and enjoyed everything going on at that time in gaming. I miss being that age for sure, but I'm kinda glad that at the time I was that young, it was the NES era and I did not need to learn about the La-le-lu-le-lo, Foxdie or some biblical concept in a crazy JRPG. All I had to know was were to jump and when, lmao. Some of those game like Xenosaga 1-3, Silent Hill 2, Fatal Frame or Kingdom Hearts probably would have been incomprehensible too! lol. I know when I was about to turn 30, I got into emulation and started replaying alot of SNES and early PS1 RPGs I played when I was 10-14 yro.... I couldn't believe how much I had missed due to just being too young in the early and mid-90s to grasp the themes or notice gameplay systems I basically originally fumbled thru. I really appreciated the romance elements and drama better too, and honestly, most the plots went over my adolescent and preteen mind.👼 I wish those days of gaming never ended. Those were our times, and it'll never be like that again.👍
@@Zero_Tester It's funny you mention that, because that's EXACTLY why I said in my comment to *@July1996ful* that I am so grateful to have been late HS and then college age thru that generation because of that very reason! I think had I been even a few years younger I wouldn't have gotten a lot of the themes and subtext in many of those games (alot of it would have went over my head). And I would have probably had no clue what was going on in the gaming industry as a whole, because I wouldn't have had the ability to experience all of it. I think for that one, single, generation I was the perfect age to be a video-game player: I was old enough to appreciate romance and deep themes AND had disposable income to play them all. Yet at the same time, I was a young collage age kid with tons of free time and few responsibilities who still felt like every game was impactful (probably due to hormones) and changed my life! I had freedom (a car), youth (lots energy, fee-time, etc) AND a part-time job... I felt like a god that generation! lmao. I miss those days.
