- After last week's vintage cassette walkman haul, I have a few walkmans to repair and restore. This week I start with my favourite one, the Toshiba KT-S1 and try to get it up and running, I suspect the main issue is a perished belt, therefore a belt replacement required.

I wish ALL walkmen were that easygoing and relaxed to repair when it comes to the belts. Everything here was soooo easy accessible. While in so many other models you have to dig deeep down into the components and pretty much completely tear the whole thing apart only to remove and replace the belt (or belts). You were really lucky with this one, Maddi.
Yes! This one was surprisingly easy when it came to belts, I coudlnt believe how simple it was, if it wasn't for that tyre getting grease on it this would probably be a more simpler repair and restoration.

I had one of these last year and I can say that it was my best walkman. I've had numerous walkmans since then but none have come close to how good this one was, i had absolutely no problems with it at all. I really regret selling it last June. You don't know what you've got till it's gone!! Love the vid!

Great job. I had one of these in 1981 and never forgot it. I just bought one on ebay, and then found your video. One of the most amazing devices I have ever owned. Portable cassette players never got better than this in my opinion. Congrats on finding this in such good condition.

Oh you have no idea what a mess i have found in my Aiwa TPR-300A radiorecorder. The gooey... goo these belts have turned into is worse than liquid tar >_< It's really really nasty...

Those tiny screws... happens to me all the time. It's like they sometimes just fall into a black hole. I had the same "black plague" sticky belt thing happen to me this week, as I just finished repairing a hand-me-down 18 year old Aiwa all in one system (which also gave me several few "why am I doing this?" moments). Everything was worn and extremely crusty inside from sitting in a hot kitcken (no a/c) for several years plugged in just to hear FM radio. CD tray wouldn't open/close, volume knob wouldn't respond, disc wouldn't spin, tape heads were all covered in green crud, bad belts of course, and apparently just the right environment for small reptiles. I was shocked to discover a large gecko fossil wedged right up against the power supply circuit board. Amazing what you may find inside sometimes. It's all restored and working now, though I think it needs new heads (it still sounds ok... you think DeOxit may work to free the corrosion?) .
By the way, I found that using a tape with white noise works better than just a sine/square wave, because you can more easily find that sweet spot when you make it sound the brightest. The Aiwa has a "karaoke" feature which works by cancelling out the center channel. This actually helped alot to adjust the azumith, because you know when you found the right spot when it goes silent due to phase cancellation. Oh, and a couple ideas on how to adjust the pitch: one is to use a phone app like a guitar tuner that can detect and display the pitch in Hz for comparison to your Sony player, and the other is to have a second copy of the azumith tape running simultaneously on both players and trying to get them to phase together.
I think i'm going to use a magnet next time with those tiny screws, I should have done that this time but it just didnt occur to me.
yikes, I think your Aiwa must have been a serious victim of nasty kitchen grease as well as all that steam and moisture. I don't blame you for having that "why am I doing this" moment, I wouldnt like to work on that lol. You could give Dioxit a go and see what happens though on the head.. i'm not sure, it's supposed to protect, there fore it must leave some film or something... i'm not sure how that would be tape head friendly or not.
I may try white noise actually... it will also leave less ringing in ears! Thanks for the suggestion!

The rubber has srunk over the years and the rubber around that wheel originally had a rough surface kinda like sandpaper. Once the Rough rubber surface is gone combined with the shrinkage causes a gape between the drive wheel and that's why there's no fast forward process.

I need some help. I am obsessed with my collection of Toshiba cassette players. Just acquired a KT-R1. Had a broken wire in battery compartment. The belt was disintegrating. Replaced it. My problem now is radio works great. It FF AND RW perfect. The cassette player has no sound. It works, but no sound. I noticed that the record light stays on. What can I do? It's like brand new.

I had one of these, it never failed even after several high speed falls on the road when my friend and my brother dropped it when riding their motorcycles. The headphones were fantastic. Very high output, clean sound. It was stolen after about 5 years of use, or I would probably still own it today.

After applying any lubricating or any cleaning solution you could place the whole thing in bright sunlight for 10 minutes to dry. This will help I think.

I synced a tape deck up with music on my PC, then used it to record a tape of a 440hz tone. Now I just adjust the speed by measuring it with a tuner app on my phone to make sure I'm at the right pitch (datuner is a good one)
Today I bought Crown SZ31 "new" (unused) full package and works as well as I remember. It was my preferred walkman in my childhood. I still have that old one but does not perform properly.
I work on watches but am nervous about working on my Walkman collection or my Sanyo 9998k which needs new belts, I think it is due to the fragility and mix of electronics and mechanicals. Keep up the great videos. 👏

I think you are right, the Deoxit overspray "lubed" the tire causing it to slip. You could save yourself some hassle by using a magnetic screw driver for those tiny screws then demag the head after :D. My KT-S1 probably needs a better belt, I just used what I had that was new but probably too thick a belt and so it plays a bit wobbly. Cheers and thanks for the vids, your laugh is infectious!
The screw driver was a little magnetic, but yes I should have got a magnet to stick those screws to so they wouldnt roll over the place lol, I think I will do that next time ;o) ... And it my pleasure, Thanks! :o)
I like the aesthetics of the Toshiba, any portable stereo with a big tape window, but I'm always hesitant about buying one because they don't feature the Dolby NR chip. Oh, and a tip when working with anything with lots of screws use an ice cube tray.
I have that kind of walkman many many years ago it was thrown by our neighbors. i repaired it. but unfortunately it broke altogether. so i threw it after using it for a year.

Very cool video! Would you believe I have the exact same one with the exact same problems when I got it! The rubber wheel on the forward takeup reel is quite finicky on mine when it is in play mode. These actually have an auto stop mechanism (only for play) that works off of the forward takeup reel, but it depends on the outer part of the wheel rotating as the inner part slips to unlatch the play button. Did you ever see if the rubber wheel is strong enough to engage this auto stop mechanism on yours?
MsMad Lemon: Excellent videos! How about showing us a restoration of the AIWA HS-T06 Mk2? Mine needs a new belt and a proper cleaning. Also has a crackly volume control.. Mech is the TN52 Aiwa setup- like the G35 has. Please...

Ah, a perished belt - reminds me of my repair of my Amstrad CPC 3 inch floppy drive. Cleaning up the rollers was really tedious, can't recommend it. :-D
Looks like one of the those cheap magnetic parts trays or dishes on Amazon would come in handy for those tiny screws.

Over time, the tape head gets magnetized, and requires demagnetizing to restore it, I wouldnt say it's urgent, but if you have a good demagnetizer, it's worth doing it.
Just purchased one and I’m experiencing the same issue, how did you remove the cassette door to access the spindles ?
I have the KT-S1, replaced the belt that had turned to gunge, and it works, but has one annoying problem. It will randomly just power off until tapped on the top. I have been inside and looked at the top of the main board, and have isolated the apparent fault to just inside a square hole about an inch below the radio/tape switch. Inside that hole is some kind of switch I think, and inserting a small screw driver and wiggling gets the power back on again. But I cant get it to stay on for long, seems like some moveable plastic switch down inside? How do I get to this as its inside the main board and cant really see how to lift up the circuit board to see whats going on. What is this switch inside the square hole?
Are they any significant change after using those demagnetize Cassette? i was thinking getting one, love the azimuth green color cassette
I'm probably the last one to figure it out, but another way to adjust speed, and this would be a non technical way. Get one of those cheap guitar tuners. Record a 440hz tone (same as a A musical note) froma known good deck and play it back in the walkman and use the guitar tuner to measure it to a accurate "A" note. Saw this in some other you tube video and seems like a good idea. Espicially when you dont have all the testers and oscilloscopes of a shop.

I recently bought one and mine seemed to automatically stop when rewinding and at the end of the video
You can get fairly cheap 3000hz test tone cassette tapes that have been recorded from direct drive decks on Ebay. Then its just a matter of using a multimeter with Hz setting or a pc with line in to make the speed right. Its alot better than just using your ears alone...
However be warned that if you are a perfectionist and you get measurements that precise its easy to become Craaaaaazy with how inaccurate your tape decks really are.. I should know.. Ive been there :D
I tend to be a perfectionist when it comes to head alignment but with regards to speed, i'm resisting falling into that trap which you know well haha. As long as the speed is close enough, i'm satisfied :o))
Did you figure out the radio part. ? You need the FM cartridge that goes in it like a cassette tape. The hole in the cover is for the tuning wheel. I still have one of these but haven't used it for some time now.

I've recently got one of these and unlike my cassette deck forward and rewind don't stop automatically when it gets to the end of the tape and have to do it manually. It does stop automatically when playing and reaches the end but not forwarding or rewinding. Is this normal?

Hi! Thank you for your video, great stuff on your channel! Thanks to you I managed to change the belt on this walkman, the old belt was melted and then horribly solidified on the tiny motor wheel.
Anyway, the walkman works but not properly as a I noticed a couple of issues:
1. it plays slowly. when I adjust the motor speed to maximum it is not fast enough and sometimes it's not able to hold that speed. 2. FF and REW don't work smoothly, sometimes I have to press play, then stop and then FF or REW in order for them to work, it looks like they struggle to start spinning (could it just be because of poor batteries?).
These problems seem to affect the way the tape re-wraps inside the cassette case (sorry I don't know how to describe it better).
What are your thoughts about it? any advice? Many Thanks :)
I had the exact same problem with my Walkman WM-F1, it is probably the tape speed adjustment, mine was a bit corroded, I used some isypropal alcohol and some contact cleaner and twisted it back and forth and presto it fixed the speed back up! Hope this helps man!!! 🎉

Have you repaired damaged tapes? I have some that I have to split the original case because the tape either makes noise or they do not turn. And install the tape on a case that has the screws so you can open those. I wish there was a way to open original tapes without destroying them.
I have done a few times yes, if they do not turn or feel too tight, hold the cassette from one end and tap it on the palm of your other hand a few times, it somehow loosens it. Yes i'm not a fan of tapes which don't have screws, there's just no way without destroying them.
I will try your suggestion, hopefully it will work.I found a tape box set of a live concert of Bruce Springsteen wich comes with 4 cassettes and they are all stuck. :-(Thank you for the tip.Saludos

Where do you get your belts from? I have the same one and my belt is just a bit stretched. (Thankfully it didn’t break and get all slimy!)
You could just get a 30 pack of eBay, did the same with mine, fits well.

The best thing i've found is 'Dioxit Fader' it's a bit expensive but the can lasts you and it does a good job, I wouldnt use any other dioxit variant though, just the one specifically for faders.

How do you take the plate out? I have a KT-S3 and would like to do the same. You skipped that part in the video.
I just got this machine from eBay. I think it was sitting in the box since the 80s and was in really good condition. I just had to adjust the tape speed thing because it was playing too slow and the belt was fine. My only problem is the volume seems to be super quiet. I read somewhere that maybe I need to replace the audio capacitors. Is this a hard thing to do? Thanks for the video :)
Thanks, and congrats! :o) .. I wouldnt say replacing the audio caps is a hard thing, just as long as you find the right replacements however I must tell you that mine is quiet also, sometimes i'm listening to it while it's full volume and it just sounds normal lol
MsMadLemon oh well if yours is quiet too maybe that's just how these were made. I can crank up the volume on my speakers at home and it sounds great but listening with headphones seems very low at Max volume.
@@Amasloth Hi ... it's pretty loud. Replacing caps helps. Mine had just the buzzing sound with no volume control effect on this buzzing sound whatsoever. I replaced all the caps. Sounds quite good now. Though I'm struggling with slow speed and take-up spindle/pulley/spool. I have tried IPA so many times on the rubber tyre....works very weak for sometime then gives up. And play speed is about 80Hz slower for a 440Hz tone.
Oh and by the way, you should save that 5 minutes of Tuning sound as a flac file so you can always play it as a steady running reference when you have the cassette in the cassette deck who's motor speed you are tuning to. So you can do it in one step without swapping the same tape between two decks ;)

God I wish mine had its belt still in one solid piece. Instead it looked like a symbiote was growing inside.

Luis, I would be very careful lubricating this, as you can see in the video i tried and it ended up greasing the part i didnt want and i had to drench it in IPA to get the lubrication off... only on the mechanism and only a single drop of even singer oil would do... Wow and flutter is different that can be caused by bad belts or a bad pinch roller,

I have a beloved Rio Karma 20gb MP3 player which only plays in mono. I can get it to play in stereo if I angle the jackplug with a little pressure, but it is a custom socket which the mini-jack sits inside, so I don't think it's possible to replace it. Is there some sort of soldering trick on the internal contacts I can try? Any ideas?
This is a faulty stereo one? i'd try cleaning out the socket first thing with this dioxit stuff or isopropyl alcohol just in case the contacts need cleaning. if i'm understanding right, it seems like contacts have been bent out of position?
it could even be a dry joint, try resoldering and see if that would work.
Great suggestions. I'll take a look. Make sure I'm extra careful. It's made out of quite cheap plastic unfortunately, so the screw holes are ultra fragile now. I'd love one day to make a new case for it somehow, as the software/firmware is beyond awesome, even today.

U can use a Guitar tuner to fix the speed , download an app and u can do a perfect job , Ciaoooooo
I put 1.2 V batteries in this but it didn't work. I noticed it required 1.5 V batteries so is this the problem? The reason I'm hesitant is because I put 1.2 V batteries in an Aiwa that required 1.5V batteries and it worked fine
1.2v AA batteries will work (rechargable AA batteries are 1.2v and not 1.5v) and I use rechargable all the time anyway, try this with new batteries to test.

Great video as ALWAYS!. A couple of comments, not criicism, just trying to pass on my knowledge.
Caig DeOxit is really great stuff, but for faders like the one in the Toshiba, you should use their Fader product. Faders like the one in the Toshiba have a grease that allows the large slider to move across the surface freely. Regular DeOxit tends to wash away the grease and as a result the fader tends to stick in certain spots and not move smoothly.

Second, there is a great product called Rubber Re-Grip that is a chemical conditioner for rubber and is great for the idler pulleys and rubber surfaces. It makes them almost as good as new and gives them a new lease on life. It is especially handy for parts that require much disassembly to replace the rubber. Here is a link:

Third, look into a screwdriver magnetizer/demagnetizer. It is really helpful in working with tiny screws. And working on a towel keeps the wayward screws contained and stops them from bouncing off into oblivion.

And last, you should look into a FFT program for your computer. It turns your sound card into an audio spectrum analyzer and would allow you to read out the frequency of your tape to set the playback speed. Do a google search for FFT software and you will find many available.

The Re-Grip isn't perfect. It works best on glazed and hardened surfaces. If the rubber has turned back into petroleum, it won't help at all. Before trying to replace the rubber, the Re-Grip treatment is my first step. I am not sure what the actual chemical make-up is but it is very strong. I recommend using it in a well ventilated place.

interesting :-)) another question about the alcohol. why is everybody using isopropyl? it is so much easier for me to find ethanol... is there some advantage using isopropyl?
That is a good question, one thing I know about Isopropyl alcohol is that apparently it doesnt have any greasy contaminants, and tends to thin out grease, if there is any moisture, isopropyl or IPA tends to evaporate it quicker as far as Ive read before... i'm not sure on the properties of ethanol, how it is in comparison to IPA.
And another thing I know is that ethanol I think dries out skin more than IPA, which is why IPA is also known as 'rubbing alcohol', used for skin/wounds etc...thats the limit of my knowledge about them both :o)) lol
