  • Returning from the Play Expo, I found my beautiful Sony WM-EX610 walkman not working right. One of the right Stereo channel just wasnt working, however flipping the cassette autoreverse to side B was working perfectly. The issue pointing to a severed/broken connection between the circuit board and the playhead. So I attempted to repair it and show the details of what I did.

    It's great that I found this channel where the old electronics are appreciated. Your videos are interesting and at the same time relaxing and your laughter makes me feel good. Old c-cassettes and vinyl records also playing here.

      I freakin hate flex ribbon cables, and because of that I thought I may not be able to fix this. i'm glad it just worked out smoother than I thought it would lol .

    Absolutely outstanding job as usual! I hope you inspire more women to get into electronics.
    Also, I love that you are not square...it's what makes you so unique! Keep calling them Walkman just to annoy the OCD people. ;)
    I'm watching you as I restore a classic Technics Sl-1950 turntable. You inspire me.

    Good job! Really nice that you repaired it. :-)

    It's nice to see her repairing that Walkman, I bought the same model from a friend but when I took it apart I found q. the girdle or leash as we give it in Peru 🇵🇪 they are hungover and I am worried that. Some particle has gotten into the mechanisms, another problem is q. I can't disassemble the circuit to see the mechanical part.

    The lifetime of so many devices is very short nowadays especially since the advent of non replaceable batteries. What I really admire about looking at some of these devices from the past is that because you value them I look at the more closely. This makes me realise how especially a company like Sony produced some amazing equipment I now deeply regret giving away my mini disc player.

    • @MsMadLemon
      @MsMadLemon  6 років тому +1

      Devices nowadays feel as if they've intentionally got a short lifespan, we're living in a disposable era pretty much where consumerism is the focus. But, I dont believe it was that much the case back with all these devices of the past. I have some things from the 70s and 80s which are still going strong now. As you said they made some pretty amazing equipment.
      If you're thinking of getting a Minidisc recorder + discs, now is the time, they're not so expensive, but eventually will be as prices rise. I'll say this, I still use mine and they are fun to use :o)

    Another success (thumbs up). The clamshell design is very reminiscent of minidisc recorders from that time, from the loading and eject mechanism, to the clicky sounds, the curves and the metallic body. It's very sleek and posh looking. One thing with your particular one, not sure if you can tell, but I think the motor had a slight instability in speed. Sometimes the tape sounds fine, but sometimes it ran just a tad slow, so the key was a bit flat ever slightly. I think it's the motor or a power fluctuation because even with no sound on tape, the pitch of the motor "whining" gets slightly lower then back to normal. I wonder if it's the battery or what. Doesn't seem to be the belt. Edit: it sounded like when you connected it to the camera the first time, it made a motor whining sound for a split second. Maybe since camera mic inputs use "plug-in power" that it somehow gave the motor a jolt, and could have also somehow caused the speed to fluctuate slightly? Weird, but I wonder. Maybe I'm expecting too much from a "portable stereo" :)

    • @MsMadLemon
      @MsMadLemon  6 років тому

      Thanks! Yes the design does remind me a lot of the Minidisc recorders/player, esp the one I have, very sleek design!
      Yes I know what you mean about the motor, i've heard that slow dip then speed up with a few personal stereos, It may be the case that the battery isnt fully charged, I still havent charged it since the expo. I need to test that with fully charged Eneloop pro in there too. But that dip motor sound isnt alien to me :o)

    Great job! Those pesky flex ribbons!!! I fixed a few Psion 3's the same way many years ago. The problem comes from physical movement causing fatigue fracture =\

    • @MsMadLemon
      @MsMadLemon  6 років тому +1

      Thanks!..Flex ribbons, that's what they're called! lol i know they serve their purpose but i've never liked them.

    • @GadgetUK164
      @GadgetUK164 6 років тому +2

      You aren't alone lol, I don't like them either! The problem is that they are destined to fail - I guess everything is ultimately - entropy etc, but the fact they are used in mechnical parts where it needs to flex due to movement between say the front and back of the case, the angle of movement and the quality of the ribbon ultimately factor in how long before they break.
      The Psion 3's are notorious for the problem because of the angle they flex at (like 105 degrees or something). I would guess on a walkman (yes I call all personal stereos that too lol) the angle is much less - just enough to get tape in and out, but it does show that even with a shorter angle of movement they still fail at some point!

    • @GadgetUK164
      @GadgetUK164 6 років тому +3

      BTW - Something else I forgot to mention... What typically happens is at the point where its most stressed the flex ribbon actually splits. If you examine the whole ribbon you would probably find the break. It's often worth putting some insulation tape around that part of the ribbon, it can help support the fracture from breaking further. This is something else I did when fixing Psion 3's many years ago, and where I didn't, the split widened breaking more connections later.

    • @MsMadLemon
      @MsMadLemon  6 років тому +1

      I don’t like them even more now lol
      you know what the funny thing is about the walkman part? there are no freakin moving parts in this one, the head is fixed to that position, it’s the cassette that goes over the head when inserted and that’s it, so i’m not sure how the freak it goofed up! lol ..
      okay thinking about it now, maybe only very slightly when you open the lid (the head is fixed to the lid) but not a great deal.
      Thanks for the advise though regarding these!

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 6 років тому

      Psion 5 also has registration holes in the flat flex cable that "help" it to break. Sometimes it's not the worst idea to simply copy the design into a PCB CAD and have a PCB house make some fresh flat flex cables for you, and you can fix their misguided attempts at saving some material in the process. They'll usually have an MOQ on the flat flex though, so... you get to sell 49 pieces or so. Also worth looking around whether somebody already did that and is selling replacements - sometimes it's not on ebay though but on sites that look approximately like this: www.pulster.eu/d__kaffee5__Psion_Cappucino_machine___coffein_shots_whenever_you_need_it694.htm
      As to how this broke... well slight movement can do that too eventually, but if it's really all fixed, maybe it simply cracked at the solder joint at one of the ends simply from vibration and temperature cycling, and reheating it would reseat it...
      I'd have an urge to run such bodges with transformer enamel wire... assuming it's not gonna rub through and contact something else, would this be good enough? Given there isn't much or any movement there... they are so similarly coloured and they are thin and easy to fit anywhere.

    Great work, sometimes the solder could be a dry joint meaning you just need to flux it, clean and re-solder. Just wondering is ESD an issue when repairing these, especially the IC components, if I get one might be worth having a ground strap just in case.

      If you pry off the lid from the battery slot side first that will create enough space to maneuver the headphone side off.
