  • After successfully repairing the Toshiba KT-S1 in the last part of "The Walkmans", the next in line for a repair and restoration is this Sony WM-4 in that gorgeous red edition! I open this up and discover more than I expected. I attempt to repair the stuck buttons and free the mechanism from this jam. I then sort out a very crackly volume control using Dioxit. All while listening to Amiga Mod remixes on the previous KT-S1 walkman.

    The walkman (quoted from Wikipedia)
    "Walkman is a Sony brand tradename originally used for portable audio cassette/tape players in the late 1970s. In the 2010s, it was used to market Sony's portable audio and video players as well as a line of former Sony Ericsson mobile phones. The original Walkman actually introduced a change in music listening habits by allowing people to carry recorded music with them and listen to music through lightweight headphones. Owners of the Walkman were able to take back their "lost" time, commuting for example, and turn it into a pleasurable experience, or add a soundtrack to their urban surroundings.[2] It was the privatization and personalization offered by the Walkman that led to its success.
    The prototype was built in 1978 by audio-division engineer Nobutoshi Kihara for Sony co-founder Masaru Ibuka. Ibuka wanted to be able to listen to operas during his frequent trans-Pacific plane trips, and presented the idea to Kihara.[3] The original idea for a portable stereo is credited to Brazilian-German inventor Andreas Pavel.[4] The first Walkman was marketed in 1979 in Japan, using the name Walkman. From 1980, it was known as the Soundabout in many other countries including the US, Freestyle in Sweden, and the Stowaway in the UK.[5] Advertising, despite all the foreign languages, still attracted thousands of buyers in the US specifically.[6] Sony President and co-founder Akio Morita hated the name "Walkman" and asked that it be changed, but relented after being told by junior executives that a promotion campaign had already begun using the brand name and that it would be too expensive to change.[3]
    The names "Walkman", "Pressman", "Watchman", "Scoopman", "Discman", and "Talkman" are trademarks of Sony, and have been applied to a wide range of portable entertainment devices manufactured by the company. The name "Walkman" was based on its precursor, the Pressman tape recorder. An initial prototype of the Walkman was in fact made by replacing the monophonic recording circuit, head and speaker from the Pressman with a stereo playback-only head and amplifier.[7] Sony continues to use the "Walkman" brand name for most of their portable audio devices, after the "Discman" name for CD players was dropped in the late 1990s"

    Thank you for posting this. Our family's first Walkman was a WM4 (silver, not red). I found this video by a search of the model #. If you think the tape speed is off, you can adjust the pitch pot while it's running (and not all apart) by inserting a jeweller's screwdriver in a slot at the top of battery compartment.

    Very happy you managed to fix the big red bus. The door being jammed, it must have been a relief to finally kick out the passenger. Awesome music, never heard any of those remixes before, and if anything, the bus sound fuller and richer in sound than the silver one. Perhaps it comes with a built amp? Its funny, whenever I see caps in a video now, I instantly imagine you going to work with your de-cap gun. That things is a menace!. btw, someone posted some excellent Turrican music into the Lemon Hallowed Guitar hall of fame thread today, which you must check out. :) (its in the games section)

    • @MsMadLemon
      @MsMadLemon  7 років тому

      You've had a thing for that red bus from the beginning havent you ;o))
      I didnt give them a fair comparison in this video as Toshiba was playing quietly throughout the video.. But yes the Red bus is much louder than the Toshiba... sound quality wise I think Toshiba might have a slight edge over Red bus.
      Hahah there's more recapping to do (God help me!)
      I must check out that guitar hall of fame thread! I still need to have a go at the two games, i'm going to suck at this round lol i've been practicing though. I got further in Lionheart than i did the first couple of times I played.. the controls feel a bit stiff as in the way the main character moves is awkward. Something a little off about it.

    • @lifeschool
      @lifeschool 7 років тому

      ha-ha, great to hear it. I know Lionheart is not really an easy game and Tetris can drive me crazy! Yes I have a thing for the red bus, it stood out among the crowd and said "pick me". It is so amazing to see you repair things, as each time I think it is beyond help, but each time you fix it. I dont know about green fingers, but you must have solder silver fingers or something. :)

    Nice video, I'm starting my own project with a wm-4! I kind of want to add a Bluetooth receiver parallel to the tape with a switch to switch between tape or Bluetooth. That way I'd have the option to stream music from my phone to the Walkman, giving the illusion I'm more old school than I actually am ;) Was just wondering, what track is your intro music from? Does the demagnetizer tape cassette work very well compared to one that plugs into the wall?

    • @MsMadLemon
      @MsMadLemon  6 років тому

      I've never tried the mains powered one, i'm a little wary of it since apparently there seems to be more chance of magnetizing the tape head with it.

    • @keithaumann8183
      @keithaumann8183 6 років тому

      MsMadLemon I have read the same thing happening. Have you proven to yourself that the cassette shaped one works very well?

    • @MsMadLemon
      @MsMadLemon  6 років тому

      Honestly speaking, i've heard that demagnetizers make a difference hence why i use this one whenever restoring or before recording a tape. However I havent heard any significant difference in the sound quality itself before or after demagnetizing.

    • @keithaumann8183
      @keithaumann8183 6 років тому +1

      MsMadLemon Thanks. I have read that magnetised heads can cause reduced treble response and partially erased tapes on playing. Demagnetisation would indeed be beneficial. Need to see if those cassette form-factor demagnetisers work well as they would be very handy!

    I have a question about tge very same WM-4, I replaced the belts but the speed is too slow. I'm wondering what could be the problem?

    • @MsMadLemon
      @MsMadLemon  6 років тому +1

      Two things, make sure the belt is not to tight if you've used a non standard one, and also there is a speed adjustment pot in there with which you can tweak the motor speed.

    • @poeticphantom
      @poeticphantom 6 років тому +1

      MsMadLemon where can I find this speed adjustment pot?

    • @MsMadLemon
      @MsMadLemon  6 років тому +1

      14:58 the part that says "VR" on the board is the pot.
      15:43 you see me turning it there.

    I just got one of these at an auction, for an exceptionally reasonable price. Do you have details of the demagnetising cassette you are using? I would love to get one. Thanks

    • @MsMadLemon
      @MsMadLemon  6 років тому +1

      The only thing I know about it, is that its an electronic one from Radio Shack.

    • @vincentmaggio5799
      @vincentmaggio5799 6 років тому

      I see a lot of them with brushes and a "demagnetizing fluid", but I can't find one like yours that actually looks like it makes a difference! I'll keep looking, Love your videos!

    • @MsMadLemon
      @MsMadLemon  6 років тому +1

      "Demagnetizing fluid"? what the freak is that?! lol.;o)) .. Ah brushes, its a head cleaner, the fluid is just Isopropyl Alcohol. Yeah i'd only get electronic demagnetizers, I even have a second electronic Sony one somewhere, but I prefer this one.

    • @vincentmaggio5799
      @vincentmaggio5799 6 років тому +1

      I've cleaned it up with Isopropyl and cotton buds, and it's already sounding good. Do you put a battery into the electronic demagnetizers, or are they powered by the motor of the player? Thanks and keep making more videos!

    • @MsMadLemon
      @MsMadLemon  6 років тому +1

      no the demagnetizers have coin type batteries you have to change.
      Nice! glad you got it sounding better!

    Hi, what solution do you use to clean the walkman???

    • @MsMadLemon
      @MsMadLemon  4 роки тому

      I would use soapy water on a soft cloth or sponge, anything harsh like IPA would take the coating off.

    was the motor running before repair? i've got a similar mechanism sanyo walkman but the motor was not working at all, so have no idea what i should do first, any recommendation?

    • @MsMadLemon
      @MsMadLemon  5 років тому

      Turn the walkman off and try to power the motor by using a 3v battery, if it spins it mens the motor is fine, if not, possibly a replacement..... if the motor spins, it could be a dry joint so resolder the motor wires on the circuitboard. (best to always start with the simplest things when repairing)

      Ms Mad Lemon thanks for the input, hopefully i could figure out how to connect the battery to the motor directly for trial.

      I read somewhere the WM-4 is much louder than many models because it uses 4 batteries instead of the usual 2.
