      Jet engines usually do at low speed.

      That are the blades of the compressor. There are several reasons for that:
      1. Easy Installation and removal
      2. As the engine spins faster the centrifugal forces will push them outwards with hundreds of G's, reducing the vibrations
      3. It leaves space for thermal expansion
      For the model you dont need any of that obviously, but in a commercial airliner thats another story

    Man that thing was not machined well. Main shaft not in balance fins moving and scrapping housing. Johnny needs to make a high quality one

      @@Petriefied0246 nah, high-bypass doesnt scale well unfortunately...fluid-dynamics and all that.. but single-stage low-bypass is very doable, I built one as a teen 20+ years ago.

      @Noman1000 i know they make some noise but it's not necessary with a model or they could have tightened the tolerance and had an explanation on a plaque with the rest of the information

      @njones420 I know this but it ruined a nice model on this I'd choose functionality over accuracy when it's never actually going to see heat to shrink tolerance

    I'm a former Turbofan Test Engineer for Lockheed and Rolls-Royce at Stennis Space Center, from 2007-2012, testing the Trent 900, 1000, and XWB engines for the Airbus A380, Boeing 787, and Airbus A350.

      God the Trent XWB is beautiful.
      Btw, can I ask you one thing I couldn't find the answer online?
      I've seen the inside surface of the air intake/nose cowl to be perforated with small holes.
      Is it actually blown to remove the boundary layer? Or is it just a texture to reduce the viscous friction?

    You should shim up the blades with paper so it doesn't sound like someone threw a bag of pennies inside that thing. :))

      Why? Real turbofan engines sound like that when they rotate slowly. The fan blades are loose on purpose.

    3:00 if you wonder what these tubes are for: This is called Low Pressure Turbine Active/Passive Clearance Control (LPTACC/LPTPCC). All these tubes have small holes on the inside and they blow cool air at the LPT Case. This is done to ensure a small tip clearance between the turbine blades and the case to achieve a higher efficiency. The difference between active and passive is the presence of a dedicated valve (active: there is a LPTACC Valve - passive: no valve).
    This is a nice model for educational purpose however I'd prefer a two shaft model (obviously more complex but also more accurate).

    I was looking at it thinking the tolerances were lousy and wondering if it would be rectified on tightening all the fixings, now I know why it’s not a working model..

    With the runout of the turbine visible when looking in from the rear of the turbine , if you spun that up it would scatter extremely destructively. Something doesn't seem right because it sounds like a washing machine filled with bolts and nuts

      It’s an educational model, it is not intended to achieve the strength, tolerances and frictionless operation of a real jet engine! If it did it would be much more expensive!

      @@crashwelder5337, at low rpm, the front stages of the engine have their blades pinned and are able to move 5 to 10 degrees about the pin, the noise is something else at 20 to 80 RPM. It does sound exactly as you describe.

    It does look cool and educational. It most certainly does not sound like it.

    I bet you could get that rotating assembly to run quieter, would require loosening off all the housing bolts and shimming the fan to centralise it then tightening up again.

      it's barely holding on at the RPM it's going at.... i can't imagine it running any faster and not just exploding.

    The problem with this models is that they usually cost arround the same as a real RC type jet engine. And the RC type one can be expose, can be dissasembled and reassembled, and can be turned on and used on a RC aircraft.
