I have the same Japan market model KT-RS1 and it got same problem with cracked gears and volume control problem with 1 audio channel not working. While I ordered the POT from ebay, which takes 2-3 weeks, but I decided to take the old POT apart and one of the metal brush broke off so I super glued it and now both channels are working. I was able to repair the gears without disconnecting all the wires. Then when I play test it player runs super slow or triggering the auto reverse perpetually. After nearly losing my sanity, the cassette I had used for the test have sticky shed syndrome creating excess friction with the tape head, I found a good chrome tape and plays better, though I may have to tweak the playback speed, it a little slow.
When we buy and use things we accepting them for granted. And only when we have to repair the product we may appreciate design efforts or cry on design pitfalls.

Very Cool video, I'm now going to use your technique of holding cotton balls through tweezers; cheaper and more accurate than q-tips. At 2:11, Did you use Alcohol to check for leaky capacitor? Isn't the yellow stuff on the cotton, just flux leftover from production? What oil do you use for lubrication, is it clock mineral oil? Thank you for the tips.
