These are the consequences of living in a state where there is NO 2nd amendment. This doesn’t happen in states where that guy would have been leaving in a body bag.

This is why I always carry regardless of ubers policy. I'd rather get deactivated from uber than get deactivated from life.
Me too, but that brings with it a whole different set of problems that you, me and every other carrying driver better have squared away in our minds way ahead of time or we will all be cell sharing not ride sharing.
If people feel the need to carry while driving, they need to comply with whatever the laws are for your state. If you don’t and someone gets shot, things will not go well.
Training is also critical and should not be considered optional. People need to be proficient if they intend to carry while driving.
You need to be able to hit what you are aiming at under stress. If you shoot, miss your attacker and kill or seriously injure an innocent bystander, you will probably go to jail and/or get sued for all you’ve got.
Malfunctions can happen to anyone at any time. Less likely if you keep a clean machine. Clearing malfunctions quickly could mean the difference between being here and not being here.
People need to be intimately familiar with the use of force laws for their state. A good shoot in Texas may not be a good shoot in Illinois.
Taking a class that addresses shooting in and around cars may be a wise investment. It is probably good if the first time you hear rounds go off in a car is not when you life depends on it. Good to experience also what it’s like shooting through auto glass, how to get in and out fast, What qualifies as cover vs concealment on a vehicle.
This may also be a class in which you can sort out yourself if the equipment you currently have works for a driver.
In the non-permissive Uber world, concealed carry really means concealed.
Drawing from concealment, dealing with the seatbelt, steering wheel and how to exit the vehicle can reveal your holster set up and position aren’t going to work, Better to find that out now.
Role playing is an important element of training in terms of thinking about what could happen and what you should do in just about any scenario.
For instance, in most rideshare related incidents, you are most likely to be put n a situation where you might think you have to draw from the drop, meaning an attacker is already pointing a gun at you and you would need tp draw aim and fire before your attacker does.
Statistics show the odds aren’t in your favor given that scenario.. But what is effective here is the concept of waiting your turn. If someone has the drop on you, it may make more sense to initially cooperate and then wait for the moment where your attacker is focused on something else and then you can do what you need to do.
This may also be a good time to talk about retention issues or making sure your gun stays your gun even when someone tries to take it.
This is particularly important in the close quarters of a vehicle. Again, it may be a bad idea to try to draw your weapon with your seatbelt on and then try to orient yourself to one or more attackers 180 degrees behind you and well within arms reach.
Under these conditions, a struggle for the gun is virtually guaranteed and that is a fight you cannot afford to lose.
This might be where a good retention knife might come in handy.
A better option may be to wait.Maybe it would be smarter to exit the vehicle first , then draw when you are clear and possibly have cover and can decide whether or not you still need to engage targets.
Sorry, didn’t mean to go off on a wild goose chase and these remarks were not directed at you.
I just think it is vital for anyone who wants to practice their right to be aware there are definitely responsibilities that go with it.
I was fortunate to be trained by a lot of guys who were passionate about this stuff, treated it as if it was a life or death situation, because it is.
They all could tell stories about what it looks like when things go well and also what happens when people get lazy and complacent.
It’s too bad things are the way they are in this country and with this company in particular. In an ideal world, these are classes Uber would be conducting at the hubs. Throw in a First Aid/CPR class.
I guess we should focus on getting them to stop ripping us off first. 🤣

@psaint60 Lots of good points you made. Fortunately for me Texas is a stand your ground state. I also have a lot of training with weapons being a vet. Like you said a good shot in Texas may not be in others (looking at you California).

I was extremely fortunate to be a martial arts instructor for many years and one of the guys I trained with had a brother that was an SOF guy who retired, then worked for Blackwater for a while
Ended up meeting friends of friends, which lead to us getting a gig teaching basic self-defense, gun and knife disarms, etc. to different Naval Intelligence Officer groups up at the Great Lakes base.
Some of the guys I knew quit contracting and opened. their own firearms schools. Next thing I know, I’m at a place they called The Site or Blackwater North out in western Illinois. I don’t think this place was even on the map.
Hidden in a town of about 250, you drove an hour through cornfields, dodged cows on rutted mud roads, then you get to a non/descript farm fence, somebody makes a call, gate opens and you drive down a mile long gravel road that eventually opens up to look like a well groomed golf course, but it’s actually the 600 yd rifle range. That place had everything. Two fully furnished shoot houses for CQB a single level and a two-floor set up with cat walks above. About 20 different bays with different reactive target set ups.
I learned so much crazy crap hanging out with these guys.
There was a retired SEAL who was in charge of the place. He briefed us before we diid the CQB module telling us they lose more SEALS doing that than any other training 😳-so pay attention!

I drive here in Chicago 10p-8am 7 days a week now.The way it’s paying now , I’d be lucky i if xi could afford paper targets never mind 500 rounds of 9mm or .556.

Whenever someone calls me after accepting a ping, I always cancel without hesitation. Either they're at the wrong location, or there's some other problem. Regardless, I'm not going to find out! Sergio, please keep up the good job!
There is never an excuse for what that guy did, none. This is why drivers SHOULD always look out for RED flags, pick up on the clues like calling right away or texting " Im here and not where the pin is". These apps DON"T have drivers safety in ind. Be smart and glad this driver is ok, Uber needs to be held accountable as this could have ended badly.
Yeah I had a sketchy situation the other day where somebody ordered an Uber for their "baby brother" yet they were down the street and were telling me hey we're waving you down do you see us and when I drive a little closer I see multiple people and nobody looks like anyone's baby brother so I just took off

Uber & Lyft do not care about drivers safety or security. We are just a car to them. They only care about their shareholders and stock price. Peter is brave to agree to press charges. Then he should also sue that passenger in civil court. Thank you for interviewing Peter, Sergio. I hope he is made whole again. Uber needs to start caring for their hard working drivers that get beat up and abused because of their lack of vetting passengers.
100 % Correct, they only care about shoving money in their pockets.
People pay for rides for other people , and they feel sorry for them. It puts drivers in a bad situation. No for thought of the driver they're bringing into the situation.

Peter was fortunate also not to get his account put on hold because they did that to me in another incident. I canceled the ride on a passenger would not stop distracting me from driving, which is very dangerous. Then his demeanor changed and started saying racist things to me. I told him please exit my vehicle, and he tried to lunge over and punch me in the face, but missed, and I grabbed him to prevent him from hurting me and hurting himself. Mind you he was sitting in the front passengers seat because his two other friends were in the back. After the incident, I reported it to Trust and safety and I was deactivated for three days. Mind you, my ear was scratched up and, I was bleeding as well. Also, he came back and damaged the car so I tried to get him away from it and eventually, his friends had had enough and just got him away. Like I said, be careful out there and be streetsmart. Also, I think those people did not help Peter because they probably would get prosecuted by that stupid LA DA too. I would not put it past him to do something like that ether.

My fellow drivers, you have to protect yourself before anything happens. Calling me just a minute of me accepting your ride? It’s a big red flag 🚩 for me. Guess what? Am not dealing with you. Am a lady and I am very protective of myself. Uber/ Lyft won’t protect me. Even when they text me, it depends on what the text says. If I smell trouble, you gone end of story.
The other big problem is media coverage of the things that happen everyday. Attacks against riders are covered by the media far more often than the attacks against drivers. Thanks you Sergio for highlighting this story

That is the part that really needs fixing. If Sergio needs to use his influence and access to shame Uber into doing the right (and probably legal) thing, that goes against one of the founding principles of this country.
Uber shouldn’t help Peter because he knows somebody. Uber should be helping because that’s the law and it’s the law because it’s the right thing to do.
It’s the old “justice denied to one is justice denied to all.”
Sergio is a prince for offering his help, but Uber can’t be allowed to continue to benefit from avoiding their responsibility.
This is the clearest example I have ever seen of how a toxic corporate mindset can poison every single decision and way of doing business at every level and every touch point. They just seem to naturally fall on the wrong side of every decision they make.
It seems like everything is taken straight from the Rockefeller manual with elements of Scrooge & Marley sprinkled in.

Its easy for commenters to judge his actions. I personally do not get out of my car when i drive bar time. In this situation, i would like to say i would have driven to the nearest police station... i know where they all are in my community.

I actually had something like this happened to me about a year ago here in Texas. This lady put the wrong address. I guess I don’t know if she was trying to get a free ride or trying to go to a location further away or if honestly, she put in the wrong drop off address. I just told her no problem. Just change it on the app and I’d be glad to drop you off at the new location, but she refused to do it and kept giving me attitude. Sure enough I got sick and tired of the stupid games so I gave her two options, either she changes it on the app or I will call the police officer to come and defuse the situation. Sure enough and Officer came, and he agreed with me and tried to explain to her that I was not her secretary, and that I was merely an independent contractor, but she didn’t seem to get it. So she kept arguing with him eventually he had to remove her from my car. I stayed in my car the whole time and in the video the reason why on my phone is because I’m covering my ass with Uber and letting them know the situation. I got the video footage still, and I could send it to you Sergio if you want it. First of all what Peter did wrong was always have a dash cam rolling, second never get out of your car that’s just asking for it, and third good luck in LA. Cops in LA are not like cops in Texas. Sorry to say that, but it’s the sad reality. Especially when you have these woke DA that will prosecute a cop over a criminal. Not being political just being real. Stay safe out there, remember be street smart and handle your shit.

Totally agree. The getting out part really baffled me because he knew going into that situation that he was more than a llittle physically disadvantaged. Without lung capacity, every part of your body is affected, including your brain.
The way the legal system works these days, getting out of the car creates a whole different dynamic. It has now transitioned from a verbal conflict to a physical conflict.
And at that point I’m sure a lawyer could argue that in that transition you also went from victim to aggressor.
I can’t remember how this transitioned to a fight, but I know in a public and business related setting, if you put your hands on a customer, it’s over for you, unless you get hit first.
Even if he was carrying, what would his options have been? There is no “fear of imminent death or severe bodily harm” presented by a guy sitting in your back seat. You point a gun at that dude, he may get out of your car, but you’ll be screwed.
Worse yet is if he calls your bluff and still won’t get out. Then what? Shoot the unarmed passenger?
As you said, getting out opens a whole can of worms you don’t want any part of. Cops have the legal cover to deal with stuff like this and even with that, look at the legal problems they run into.
Sounds like something to avoid at all costs.
@@Dog-advisor Oh cool! I always wanted to visit Salt Lake City. Plano I never had problems even when I went to South East Plano. Close to Garland. Though I would not Uber there or Oak Cliff at 3:00am because that is just asking for it. This particular incident happened in Lewisville near where that Walmart and Waffle House area also in broad daylight between 11:00am and 2:00pm. Glad I have a Dashcam because it was the times doing Uber in the ghetto where I got false reporting, lots of 1 stars, and less likely to get a tip. With a dash cam all of that was reduced by 90%. This is a taxi job; dangerous, Working the drunk hours is worse. I had one guy so drunk he couldnt put in the address. This was in the daytime. He wanted to tell me how to get to his house. No can do. So he wanted a couple blocks away. Min fare ride. He walked back to rhe Korean restaurant/bar he came from. Then I noticed the Korean name on the account. The restaurant paid to give him a ride (get him out of there).
So sorry this happened to you Peter. Uber should compensate you and pay all your medical bills. Stay safe!
The fact that riders get away with everything is disheartening. Uber says add extra stop but rider won't do so but want the stop because they don't want to pay. You refuse and you get negative reviews with racial toppings.
You are honest because you do not have a car seat, you are reoorted for refusing to break the law by not conveying a toddler without one. You are in unfamiliar territory and someone wants you to turn off navigation when they cannot give clear direction. One can go on and on. Its sad.
Every time I run into “change of plans” scenarios, it is always because the passengers genuinely are not familiar enough with the app to make the required changes. Not that they are purposely trying to screw me.
I’m driving and don’t want to deal with their phone and TBH, I think I’ve used he passenger app twice in my life, so I can’t tell them what to do either.
You make Lyft and Uber millions of dollars in profit. The thanks you get is “none”.

Send that story to the senators and Congressmen including the beat up pictures those are the types of story drivers should be sending to their legislators every month plus their contract trying to not be responsible for this type of crimes to show how this 2 companies put drivers in danger all the time and don't want to do background checks on their passangers this is something that happens every month.

The root cause of the dangers of public rideshare is what I call “rideshare randos”. Neither party in the transaction know each other. They are strangers and yet they are participating in one of the most personal experiences we have. Both parties trapped in an enclosed environment with no immediate method of escape to safety.
Somewhere riders myst be encouraged to sit behind the rideshare driver. Yet for my protection as a driver, i want the rider to sit in back on the passenger side.
1 st mistake you got out of your car and got in this guy's face at that point you lost your way to immediately get out of there if things went south and when you get in somebody's face crazy people see an opertunity to get crazy especially to an old man
his mistake was he should have just took the passenger where he wanted to go instead of arguing
Surprised with his experience he left his driver's seat to engage with rider. I feel this could have been avoided. Know tne signs. Especially the opening call. Lots of red flags. Be Especially vigilant at these times. Never exit your car [*non Airport or assist]. Stay safe. Glad he's okay

You have to carry a weapon no matter what their policy says you can loose your life in a matter of seconds while the police and Uber are chilling and not doing their job. I Hope this men sues them for putting in danger his life like so many other drivers.

Wow 2 days later his back working that means he doesn't have any money save broke like all other drivers and it's addicted to the app and no sick days and no insurance.
I had a close call recently. I had to yell at top of my lungs to get him to get out. Thought it was going to get physical. I was locked out of my account. He gave a crap story that I had pulled a weapon out. Just a confrontational guy with bad attitude.
Who in the world vets rheir customers? Maybe 711 should start vetting their customers. They get robbed more.
Get a police caged installed
This is so sad, He was attacked by some drunk/high idiot and has to work 2 days later to continue to pay for the cheap motel. He and his girlfriend run the car almost 24 hours to avoid pitching a tent on skid row. He can sue the guy but that will take time. He has to pay his rent daily, So many people blow all their money when theyre young and you cant get a job at 70 or even 50 except gig work, He needs a gofundme,
With all due respect, there is at least one thing Peter did wrong, and it’s a doozy.
Peter references situational awareness. That’s awesome. But situational awareness does not mean assessing the situation, then proceeding to do something risky and foolish.
Peter had assessed that his passenger was displaying more red flags than a PRC rally-yet he failed to be aware of his own personal situation.
He is age 70, self-described sufferer of COPD. Said he wasn’t capable of getting into a boxing match with someone.
Ignoring all those handicaps, he proceeds to exit his vehicle to confront his much younger, stronger and crazier passenger in a strange neighborhood in the wee hours of the morning.
And what was his plan when he got there? There is only one reason that a driver would exit his vehicle and go to the passenger’s door. You don’t have to exit the vehicle to tell the passenger to get out.
The only reason to get out is if your plan is to physically remove your passenger.
Forget for a minute that Peter was in no condition physically to attempt to drag a young, possibly drug-crazed passenger out of his car.
What do the Uber rules say about physically removing a passenger from your vehicle?
I would bet that action is not on Uber’s list of best practices.
And what do the laws of the state of California and/or the city of Los Angeles have to say about that kind of activity?
When you go to confront an offender, you aren’t de-escalating, but escalating the situation.
Did Peter threaten the passenger at any point? Did he put his hands on this guy at any point prior to the brawl? There are probably legal issues connected to both of those actions.
Was there an easier, safer less painful way out of this situation? Maybe.
What if Peter had taken a few minutes to get this guy where he wanted to go. I’d bet the guy’s English probably wasn’t the best.I’ll bet he wasn’t that familiar with the Uber app either.
A lot of Uber drivers these days have a chip on their shoulders because they feel like they are getting ripped off by their own company and so they have a long list of things they won’t do.
So we find ourselves in situations where a driver decides he would rather roll around on the ground, get beat up snd lose a bunch of rides instead of taking five extra minutes to find out where he really wanted to go and getting rid of him.
Another safer solution might be to just drive straight to the Cop Shoo aka the police station. When you pull up there, even the surliest passenger will likely exit your car immediately and head for the hills.
This whole story has a much larger situational awareness component to it for all of us.
There are A LOT of desperate people out there. Desperate passengers. Desperate drivers. Desperate people tend to make emotional decisions vs rational decisions.
I’m glad Peter seemed to emerge from his ordeal relatively unscathed. However, the psychological effects of incidents like this can surface long after the bumps and bruises have healed. This can present additional problems for Peter if, as a Vietnam War vet he is already dealing with PTSD..

I saw the article. How long before Uber releases the name of the passenger to the police? The article is throwing out a description of the suspect. Why is that needed if Uber knows his name.

It's funny, I'm in Chi and I don't hear about cabbies getting robbed or carjacked. It's always the Uber drivers getting killed, shot, robbed. I wonder why?
Bad things happen after 12 midnight.
Cab companies run your license and verify you like an escort service would
6 years with Lyft 2000 rides, 1/2 year with Uber 600 rides. Miami to Panama City, FL. Only once got pulled over so police could arrest warrent for murderer in Panama City. This was a lyft ride called for a friend. They can't really block people from rides as I've picked up at least a dozen or two from jails in Tampa and Panama City. Everyone needs a ride home or to work. I'm retired military and am good with guns, but don't carry. The car itself is the best weapon. This is a good report on the dangers. I'd stay behind the wheel and call 911. Hope they catch the guy. I really don't think they can vet riders as many have felonies from DUI and stopping those customers from getting rides would be wrong. Don't see a right way to fix this problem....

Yes, if they forgot something in your car, they will send a message to them. They will send you a message to agree if you are okay for the rider to call you. If you agree then with your permission, they will give the rider your number. I only give permission to call me when someone left something in my car and It’s in my care. Bad economy and can’t afford to even rent a place of his own. I think him and his girlfriend are living in a hotel. So sad though! I pray God changes his story soon. It’s time for him to rest and enjoy the near end of his life and it seems to not be happening anytime soon. Heartbreaking.

I’m having a hard time understanding why it is a consistent theme in all these stories of violence against drivers, that Uber seems to get a pass and does not participate in an investigation unless compelled to do so.
I’m sure their attitude is to not be involved unless we have to be. Why does law enforcement let them get away with that.
If Uber cared about driver safety, they would be proactive. If a driver reports being attacked, Uber’s response should be, “thanks, our legal team will take it from here” They would contact the police department that filed the report, provide the passenger info and reassure the department that the driver will press charges.
In doing this Uber would be taking an easy step towards protecting other drivers from the same perpetrator, but also set themselves up to recoup medical costs incurred by the driver by going after the perpetrator for damages.
It seems ass backwards now. Uber hides until law enforcement forces them to help out? It’s ridiculous that Sergio needs to somehow use his influence and access to get Uber to do not only the right thing, but what I have to assume is the legal thing for them to do.
Think about it. How many cases are there already where an Uber driver was attacked by a guy that attacked one, or multiple other drivers previously and was allowed to continue hurting people because Uber made a business decision to avoid involvement.
Don’t know why they’ve been allowed to get away with it for so long. I would assume there would be a fat class action suit and no shortage of plaintiffs.

What do you expect from people. When you price gouge, run off with people’s food order and other betrayals of trust, how should you expect to be treated. People get tired of being taken advantage of. There are always consequences to your behavior. If it is too dangerous for you, change your practices or get out of the business.
