Always felt the eth Armor bug was a happy accident. Since there’s only a blah 2 soc runeword for player use (Unless you don’t mind breakage), it’s merc only, and even fully geared, they’re squishy. Fun story: found a perf base def eth Sacred Armor, naturally got 1 soc so couldn’t even make prudence. Also had a 44 res eth vortex ruined, which are extremely rare if you don’t realize how many bases are duped by botters.
The ebug could have been easily removed, but luckily the devs saw it as a game enhancing mechanic. Unintended for sure, but a great bug for players to aim for.
Huh. Never knew this. I always assumed that the only bugged items were the paladin class specific shields that dropped in hell. They had super high stats but appeared on the low level paladin shields.
The auto mods have level restrictions to spawn, but don’t cause the level restriction on the shield. For ex: the highest res all is something like level 45 monster level that dropped the shield to spawn. But a non magic targe will be level... 3?... to use no matter what.
When i saw the video title, i thought all the possible topics you could cover. And you did! For me, there was nothing new, still, i appreciate the info you made common knowledge for the most awesome game ever made. Kudos!
@Coooley, I can tell you're a longtime pure and true fan of the diablo franchise. You should try Grim Dawn's Reign of Terror Diablo 2 Full Game Remake Mod. It's Incredible.... literally like re-living the game in modern day (well as close to it as we're ever going to get.)
No, the ebug armors are a result of a "fix" to upgrading rare/unique ethereal armor. In 1.10 they would lose their eth defense bonus, so the "fix" was to add eth bonus to any eth armor type item coming out of the cube. Anyway, as a Single Player enthusiast, I often switch which game version I run. Version 1.00 allows repeated cow king kills, and uniques didn't have a lvl req back then. They only gain that once converted to expansion. However, if you want to do rushes in classic, SoJs with no level req is bonkers. As are the bugged mana per kill rings from 1.07, not to mention the crafts.
The durability bug on classic D2 was pretty common since all exceptional items had no unique associated with them. Add to this unique items were exclusionary to a game they already existed in, and you could force a lot of items like this.
I keep learning about this awesome 20yo game till this day thanks to you Cooley, your channel is unique same as this rare ítems, keep the great content!
Was doing chaos runs and D dropped an arachs. Sweet! The very next run a random mob dropped a rare spiderweb sash with triple durability.. it was pretty amusing
I remember when I played years ago, hacked/bugged harlequins crest (Shako) existed. They were hacked in such a way, that they had 2 or 3 sockets. The 3 socket one didn't even look like a Shako but rather that crown-looking helm. Yes, this was on *closed* bnet. I remember because I traded literally everything I had of value for one. And I had a ton of gear. I lived and breathed Diablo 2 as an (at the time) unemployed, living in my parents basement type supernerd. The norm was putting IST runes in it to increase MF. I haven't been able to find any info about it at all, which really annoys me, because noone believes me! :(
@@adamcarr4989 Just like these bugged items are "impossible". If someone told me about the items in this video, without showing them to me, I'd say THAT was impossible as well. It had something to do with merging items. It was like a mix of Crown of Ages and Harle. The stats were all messed up. But it had most of the Harle stats.
Great video. Made me mad tho. I’ve rolled ten thousand of sceptres looking for 2/3/3 on my plugy and never cared about anything else. Maybe I rolled a godly item and handed it to charsi.
The reason why some skills are forbidden is quite a nitpicky one - can't hit with your head, therefore no melee skills are allowed on helms (they are allowed on Druid pelts, but that's a separate can of worms). Holy Shield and Smite are of course *shield* skills, so it isn't logical for a scepter to possess them. And similarly, wands and shrunken heads aren't daggers.
As a necro player the poison dagger skill being forbidden is really neet but ultimately not mandatory for poison and bone builds as a forbidden skill roll on a item so I personally wouldn't pay a premium for it I can see why a min maxer would.
5:40 blizzards engines can be a bit funky. I remember being a young kid in highschool, and i wrote a bit of code similar to this. Instead of it trying 6 times and just exiting the loop, Warcraft 3 would just crash immediately, everytime regardless of if it worked first time or not. LUL There's a way to code it so you don't have to check a random index of the entire set, which I was forced to learn after the crash issue. Funny that whoever wrote that script didn't know to do that (=
Extra durability weapons are really nice in D2 Classic for whirlwind barb. Especially after 1.10 when they increased the amount of hits WW does. A rare lance with 75 durability vs the default 25. Though I'm not sure why it spawns 75, back in the pre-LoD it used to spawn 255 or something. How it worked back then is that you would carry a Unique pike with you in the game and when ever the game tried to roll a unique pike it would fail and reroll to possible Rare Lance with 5x durability. Back then uniques could only exist once in the game, which is why it was very easy to gamble SoJ's also. Keep Nagel and Manald and every unique you gamble would be SoJ (just remember to mule them away). Gambling could roll uniques with 3-5% chance..
I remember having finding holy shield scepters but yeah, had far more whirlwind helms over the years. Always knew to look for them, but not how it actually worked with the code and the engine. On E-bug, I see that has an happy little accident since it gave value to some bases, same for zod bug in conjunction for non-self-repair, non-indestructible items. Now, could you explain how taking the Horadric Staff past act 2 bug worked? did it accidentally a few times. And once I went back to town using the portal Deckard Cain creates and it became permanent, never heard of anyone doing that and my friends thought I was bullshitting them, tried many times but could never recreate it. Maybe very specific 1 frame 1 pixel click or something. Probably more bugs Im forgetting, but there's a video idea, could also include old skill bugs in it like bone wall farming. Good luck getting footage for most of them though, Im not sure I even have the screens from my older drives anymore.
The only bugged item I ever remember "finding" was an Eth bugged Shaftstop but it bugged in the wrong direction...I upped it to Boneweave but the armor value stayed the same as Mesh armor D:
This video is 4 years old, but I'm disappointed it didn't include the durability bug on magic items too, which occurs when an item rolls as a set but there's no corresponding set item
hi Coooley, i like your videos! You told me some useful infos even to a vetaran player like me who playing Diablo 2 since october 2003, good job! Subbed ofc !
Thanks man! Glad you're liking the videos. I'm actually not sure if this is possible. I know that the skills that spawn on these scepters tend to be in the same "tier". It'd be rare to see HS mixed in with lvl 30 skills (if it's even possible). Hope this helps! Thanks for the sub

Back in patch 1.09, I distinctly remember a unique Aegis (!!!?) dropping from cows. This was during the height of one of the public dupe exploits that made the servers incredibly laggy - actually playing was incredibly painful as you kept desynching, but we were 12 years old and completely obsessed with Diablo. Anyway, the reason a unique Aegis is weird is it should not have dropped in that patch at all. There was no unique Aegis in 1.09. In 1.08, it was a Stormshield, and in 1.10+, it was a Medusa's Gaze. But 1.09 was a patch that did not have a unique Aegis at all! A schoolmate of mine picked it up before I managed to get to it, and I tried to convince him to identify it to see what it was, but he decided to sell it as an "unid 08 Stormshield" (which it almost certainly wasn't). I assume it was another unique that the servers spawned with the wrong item base, due to a bit flipping somewhere in memory. Computers aren't 100% reliable, and Blizzard likely did not spend extra money to get enterprise-class hardware with ECC memory. Anyway, so I makes me wonder if some of the commonly-duped bugged items that had the properties of a unique or set, but with the wrong base (such as the Occulus ring, for example) might have been a legitimately found drop, when playing on server with ever-so-slightly unstable hardware.
FYI, from a streamer to a streamer/channel operator... create a visual 'deflection', your chest at a slight angle, to limit anxiety/viewer-exhaustion when 'squaring up' shoulder line to shoulder line, directly facing one another. Do a 15-second long rendition of the same recording, with each type of positioning. It's not that we don't want you to feel as if you're about to lean in and slowly make-out with us (lol, all joking aside, it's the same anxiety your brain sources it from)... it's simply just how it is. Give it a shot, you may be surprised how much easier it is to watch and, even more important, absorb your content. Otherwise, the first time I've interacted with your channel aside from a sub (oh shit, I'm JUST now doing so? yikes..) I THOUGHT I had done a while back. Great content, keep it up!!!

Aaahh, the durability bug! I remember when the item would have rolled a set it had double durability, and triple if it rolled unique (but obviously haven't got a set/unique version).
I’m pretty sure it’s a lie though. As in- non ladder, a diadem is more likely to spawn with triple dura than a diadem is to spawn unique in ladder. The quality or some sort of item level restriction doesn’t exist
@@chrisp2272 Griffon's Eye has an ilvl of 84, so it can be dropped only in a couple of areas. That explains the existence of triple dura Diadems. Never really played nl, so I don't have any experience about that. What do you mean by "more likely to spawn"? Do you have exact numbers extracted from the MPQ files, or is it just personal experience? Because the latter can be very misleading - you just don't have enough time to collect a big enough statistical sample to safely say something like this.
@@hungarianheroes Diadems are of such a high base item level, that anywhere that they can drop can probably also drop the unique version (if you’re playing ladder). People spend most of their time in area 85 places anyway. Or places that elite packs get the level boost to drop all the items. What I failed to say clearly: I’m not 100% sure if all the triple dura diadems you find on non ladder had the same “impossible” item roll of a Griff’s or not. It seems as though I find more failed uniques in less time playing non ladder than I find the actual item on ladder. Leading me to believe something in the item generation calculation is different in instances in which an item can’t drop. Most of the item generation tutorials you can find are paraphrased and aren’t answering the specific question about triple dura. It looks like I might just be making this up (watch some of the “5K pit runs” vids out there to see the differing numbers of extremely rare items that drop. The first 5k will find 3 Griffs and no CoA then they’ll find 1 Griffs and 5 CoA the next 5K runs; you’d need to do millions of runs to get the actual average).
@@chrisp2272 Thanks for the answer. I had to recheck something before answering because I haven't played D2 lately. Griffon's Eye is a Ladder-only item, which pretty much explains why are much more common triple dura rare diadems in non-ladder than in ladder.
@@hungarianheroes No sweat. I’m not sure my speculation is true or not, but I pretend that triple dura drops a lot more often so that I don’t feel robbed when it happens. A fun collecting game: find triple dura of items like breast plate. Or chain mail. You have to find the unique in a game then find the rare in the same game for it to happen. Some items are easier than others, I’ve definitely found a triple dura and unique breast played from norm diablo himself

I have been wondering and researching / discussing the holy shield scepter thing for a while now trying to get to the bottom of it. I'm a bit confused still. You say the mods are not supposed to spawn on class-specific items. @@Coooley knowing you are now a bounty contract i'll too hope to see you in resurrected 👑
I absolutely LOVE your videos and how you explain this stuff. I probably played 2,000+ hours of D2 back in the day, up through 1.11, and did not know some of this stuff.
Here's to 2,000 more hours in D2 Resurrected :)
shoutout to Jared and Greendude on east hardcore non ladder. Greendude and Jared had bugged small poison charms; i mean the ones that did "400 damage for x seconds" were actually "400 to life". I'm sure I can get a screenshot if I ask the old boys.
does all this work on PD2?
me writing all this down for Resurected :D
Always felt the eth Armor bug was a happy accident. Since there’s only a blah 2 soc runeword for player use (Unless you don’t mind breakage), it’s merc only, and even fully geared, they’re squishy.
Fun story: found a perf base def eth Sacred Armor, naturally got 1 soc so couldn’t even make prudence.
Also had a 44 res eth vortex ruined, which are extremely rare if you don’t realize how many bases are duped by botters.
The ebug could have been easily removed, but luckily the devs saw it as a game enhancing mechanic. Unintended for sure, but a great bug for players to aim for.
such a cool dive into some of the niches of the game. Good explanation of the forbidden skills
Kudos!
Cooley this is amazing. You are explaining all the shit I have been wondering about for many many years.. thank you
Not gonna lie, +poison dagger on a wand would be quite funny. Like how am I supposed to use this
Yup. Had one of those. Completely useless (although, I was stoked for a while, until I realized... Yeah)!
could a duel wielding barb use it?
@Coooley, I can tell you're a longtime pure and true fan of the diablo franchise. You should try Grim Dawn's Reign of Terror Diablo 2 Full Game Remake Mod. It's Incredible.... literally like re-living the game in modern day (well as close to it as we're ever going to get.)
Congrats on 2k subs dude!
Thanks, man!
12.7k Subs now!!😇
No, the ebug armors are a result of a "fix" to upgrading rare/unique ethereal armor.
These kind of videos makes me wonder how many very very very rare items i missed/sold or threw away :)
Thanks, Rodrigo. This really means a lot! I appreciate you
Was doing chaos runs and D dropped an arachs. Sweet! The very next run a random mob dropped a rare spiderweb sash with triple durability.. it was pretty amusing
Funny, I had made a post on a few of these the other day.
Another fun idea for a video: far casting
wow didn't know that about Holy Shield. great video!! love your content!!
Great video man! Awesome content and presentation, looking forward to many more videos.
That's because that's impossible
Yeah I don't think they're useful at all... The poison dagger wands. But certainly a collector's item!
your PVP stuff is cool, but those kind of videos you make are THE BEST !!! I love being surprised by D2 obscure stuff
Thanks, man. That means a lot! Crazy how much has been learned (and forgotten) about this ancient game over the years
awesome videos! been watching a few of yours
I was lucky enough to have a handful of 1.09 ethereal bugged items back in the day. gbane, vgaze, bartucs, even a very random headstriker.
5:40 blizzards engines can be a bit funky. I remember being a young kid in highschool, and i wrote a bit of code similar to this. Instead of it trying 6 times and just exiting the loop, Warcraft 3 would just crash immediately, everytime regardless of if it worked first time or not. LUL
There's a way to code it so you don't have to check a random index of the entire set, which I was forced to learn after the crash issue. Funny that whoever wrote that script didn't know to do that (=
Hey man I love your video. I didn't know about the combat skills with the barb and the holy shield bug. Great work!
Nice vid. Can you do bugged monsters that aren't supposed to exist next? 😁
Dude this is awesome! Where have you beeddn
You got the sub purely based on how well your presentation was awesome video great job being so informative
I didn't know that about the ZOD rune bug! What a fantastic bug!
Good luck getting footage for most of them though, Im not sure I even have the screens from my older drives anymore.
dude! awesome vids, I am actually impressed
Dude, these videos are so welcome and refreshing. thank you! subscribed.
Welcome aboard!
Double and triple Durability spiderweb sash from trav, I cry everytime.
Subscribing to you bro, I find it hard to learn new stuff about this game and this video contained nothing but that. Great stuff!
I'm loving these videos. They fixed the EBug eth armors with d2r, right?
This just popped up outta nowhere..so you know offa GP im watching it all ❤❤😂😂
Crazy, didn't know about the scepter 😄
hi Coooley, i like your videos! You told me some useful infos even to a vetaran player like me who playing Diablo 2 since october 2003, good job! Now, can i have a question please?; is it possible to find a +3 to 'Conviction' AND +3 to 'Fist of the Heavens' AND +3 to 'Holy Shield' War Scepter or Divine Scepter or Caduceus, 0 or 5 socketed ( for cta ), preferably with 15 % ed 3 ar? Best i saw ingame so far was 1-3-3 non-superior war scepter cta663 inside, but that was years ago. So, my concrete question is that nowadays still possible to find such things? Thank you in advance !
Remember when .10 came out i took the zod out of my very first arcaines valor I found off Hell pindle with ITH sword barb. it was a +2 barb +2 druid eth valor. Kept the indestructible mod. GG video.
Didn't see you already have a video about these. Comes to think of it, it actually did drop from Mephisto rather than cows.
Great content man. Keep up
cooley has the best diablo content
Love these videos, thanks for making them!
Thank you for this feedback! I did recently order a new green screen. Previously, I had just painted my back wall green (LOL!). But in order to get a better angle (and not have to paint the floor green too), we had to step it up. What do you stream?? Thanks again, Chad!

just making a correction, game engines wont stop you from making infinite loops, they just added a protection for it that was bugged
I recently shopped a +3 HS scepter for LLD. Took some time for get one level 30 or under. Doing it in act 2 NM with the town exit right next to Drognan I would see some sort of +HS scepter about every 20 mins.
Every 20 min? I’m calling BS. Unless you are a speed reader and/or using a program, that’s maybe 1000 scepters that you looked at for a 1 in a million roll.
@@chrisp2272 3 or 4 shops a min running 20 feet with vigor. Maybe it was longer than that on average but definitely saw a few in the couple hours it took to find one the right level. This was in path of Diablo but I dont think that mod would have affected npc shops.
@@autoaero3201
Are you using a loot filter? I’ve shopped various items before, and the difficult parts are finding the line of text you’re looking for because they don’t line up. So you aren’t just reading up and down, left and right. You’re browsing. After a few minutes, maintaining a shopping pace causes you to forget to blink. Clicking on the NPC isn’t an exact science either.
The actual rarity seems to be 1 in 80K, even if you saw 100 a minute, that’s 800 minutes to see 80K, so you got extremely lucky if you saw multiples in a couple hours.
Now I have to dust off the D2 and investigate...
@@chrisp2272 no filters. definitely got pretty quick at reading. Holy shock would be the only skill that would trip me up. Plus he mostly sold grand scepters so there could be quite a few on the page at a time. Maybe skills rolls are slightly different from npcs on magic items. Even if I saw 100 scepters a minute thats probably easily 200 skill rolls though on average. If scepter rolls with 3 skills then the 3rd skill has 2 less options it could be. They just aren't as rare from a shop. On the flip side I've maybe seen 1 drop from a monster? And I've never found a +ww helm
@@autoaero3201
The 1 in 80K doesn’t mean you’ll find it in 40K scepters if they all have two skills, it means that you can get 1 skill or 3 on a scepter, and it takes 80K scepters to get HS once.
For anyone wondering, this has been fixed for Resurrected.
Man I REALLY love your videos! I played D2 back in 1.09& up and I remember getting lots of duped items and bugged items and I absolutely loved the game! I played a couple of ladders and I was very wealthy in the game. I ran a bot with a friend and we were among the 1% in the game. I never knew how these things worked and I really want to thank you for posting these!
Great content man, would never believe I would learn something new from this game i’ve been playing since forever haha! Subbed!(Y)

Any chance of a ghost assassin build guide?
love ur build videos. Could you make an es cold sorc build video?
Cooley, is this video still applicable with the current version D2R?
I kinda wish the ability to make any ethereal item indestructible was still around. I just imagine indus eth grief
This probably isn't a bug but it seems like it to me. A few years ago i got an amulet with +3 to traps and i believe 25 charges of lvl 2 teleport. I haven't seen another amulet like that since. Maybe i was just really lucky that day.
These can still spawn. No bug. Just rare
@@hungarianheroes
Diadems are of such a high base item level, that anywhere that they can drop can probably also drop the unique version (if you’re playing ladder).
@@hungarianheroes
No sweat.
Nice so when I’m stacking magic find I can find some

Dude a barb helm with +1 to combat skills +1 to spear mastery just dropped on battlenet for me is that good :D
I never played a paladin. What good would it be to have holy shield on scepter ? or is it that is a usable plus skill point ?
I have been wondering and researching / discussing the holy shield scepter thing for a while now trying to get to the bottom of it.
I'm a bit confused still.
You say the mods are not supposed to spawn on class-specific items. But a scepter is not class-specific;
but what you're saying is, the game tried to roll mods 6 times on the scepter before giving it holy shield, what are the mods that it tried to roll 6 times?
Holy shield 6 times in a row I guess? haha
It would have to roll a "Forbidden Skill" 6 times in a row. So either HS or Smite would have to be rolled every single time :)
extremely informative as always, you are the only true d2 youtuber
