  • Hey guys! I have received a lot of questions asking how to find out if you have protein sensitive hair and how to fix/repair protein overload. So I decided to create a video to help you determine if your hair is protein sensitive, what to do if you are experiencing protein overload, the best proteins to use and how often to use proteins, etc.

    Thank you, thank you!! This video makes so much sense to me! I have coarse, thick 3a/b curls and lately I can automatically tell when I add a product if it has protein in it (when I’m a Dufus and don’t read the label), my hair literally freaks out feels stiff, crunchy, just bleh so I automatically wash the product out and start over. Thank you so much for explaining this to me. Im trying to take better care of my curls and learn good products and techniques on how to do so! I’m so thankful for wonderful content makers like yourself that help me and others. God bless you and I look forward to future videos! ❤️

    I've fell in love with shea moisture JBCO deep conditioner and I started using it every week at first everything was fine then my hair became hard and brittle and I learned then I had protein overload so I started putting moisture back into my hair with SM 10 n 1 deep condition and my hair grew from ear length to armpit length without a protein treatment so then I learned I was actually protein sensitive with normal porosity hair plus my hair is colored treated. It all about balancing moisture and protein!! This video was very helpful!

    Spot on as always Iyda. You always seem to come up with a video just at the right time for me. I’ve bought so many different EcoStyler gels, not being impressed with any of them really, and for some strange reason I wanted “to try” the JBCO and flaxseed one. So I washed my hair just 2 days ago, having bought it 😐and as usual rough, dry and brittle hair, and I said to myself I wonder if it’s the protein in it, as it does contain wheat protein. And then lo and behold I see your video. So thank you so much. Your hair looks fab btw. Well defined. 😉

    I love your protein sensitivity videos! I am low po and have fine hair, but my hair doesn't handle regular protein well. My entire hair care regimen is protein free, but I do weekly henna glosses with coconut milk for strength. Even then my hair is kinda brittle til the next wash day. It's a small price to pay for the strength and length retention I get from my henna treatments. I did recently try a henna mix with fenugreek, and it made my hair so brittle! ( fenugreek acts just like a strong protein)😩 Needless to say I'm going back to my regular pure henna mix. Iyda you are one of my favorite UA-camrs. You've helped me so much. Thank you for all that you do!❤

    • @LifeInTheSunshine
      @LifeInTheSunshine 6 років тому +1

      Iyda Michael I don't think the plant itself (lawsonia inermis) contains protein, but it definitely acts as a strenghtener for sure. I've been using it for years. Henna is drying so I make henna glosses. I use 100gr of henna and 1 can of full fat coconut milk, to that I add 1/2 cup of a moisturizing deep conditioner. I use to let my henna sit for a few hours for dye release, but the coconut milk makes the dye release immediately. I apply the henna any where from 2 hours to overnight. Curly Nikki's blog ( tons of info) is one of the best resources on henna for natural hair imo😉.

    • @wannabe41
      @wannabe41 6 років тому +1

      TheHixMixTV I have fine, low porosity hair and I love henna glosses! I make the henna separately and let it sit overnight and add it to my favorite deep conditioner with a few other things. It can be drying so I still do a moisturizing deep conditioning treatment after and I only do henna glosses once a month.

    • @nvrnakednails1231
      @nvrnakednails1231 6 років тому +1

      I also have low porosity fine strands. I used to incorporate henna glosses twice a month, but it became too drying. Then I took out the henna and just used my other Ayurvedic herbs. I only stopped doing those because they are too messy and hard to rinse out. Now I just make an Ayurvedic oil. I am one who can take and does however need protein a little more often than other lopo's lol.

      @LifeInTheSunshine 6 років тому +1

    I have just had a protein overload from doing a protein hair mask to help my hair grow and not knowing all my products I use in my regimen already had protein in them. I'm a curly noob so I didn't know my hair would react the way it did. I knew I messed up because when I was drying my hair, it was frizzing up like crazy and the frizz was super curly coils, but I have 2b hair. It was so hard and dry, it looked dull and felt like even putting it up in a pineapple would snap my hair strands so I wet it again and just layered curl custard over and put it in a protective style until I could get some protein free stuff and could fix my hair. I've tried to fix it today with doing a protein-free deep Condition and then my entire regimen protein-free as well. It is still air drying but it seems to have helped. I won't be making that mistake again! XD

    Please REPLY! My hair was 4c really curly and really thick and nappy. I got protein overload and whenever my hair dries it turns completely straight and it feels moisturised but it’s no longer thick and curly!! I’m so frustrated and I just want my hair back!

      Yes I just had to do this bc of protein overload. They were rough and split so bad, but it should help the health of your hair.

    Hi iyda !
    Is it normal to have breakage when using protein ?

    • @ohcarolina8671
      @ohcarolina8671 4 роки тому +1

      I do, especially if I have protein overload. But if I follow it up with a moisturising deep conditioner, it stops almost immediately. I'm protein sensitive.

    • @Amours1113
      @Amours1113 4 роки тому

      @@ohcarolina8671 ok, thank you very much! But Even the kinky curly knot today give me breakage although there's no protein in it...

    • @ohcarolina8671
      @ohcarolina8671 4 роки тому

      @@Amours1113 oh ok. It's hard to answer without knowing anything about your hair. If you think the breakage is because of protein overload then it will take more than one usage of moisture like knot today, to fix it (more like 5-6 moisture washes). But if you have moisture overload then obviously knot today will make it worse. Forgive me for the generic answer I really can't be more specific. But I hope you work it out soon. It will take more research and experimenting on your part.

    It's so shocking to discover I am protein sensitive. . I kept asking myself why had my hair been breaking for the last 2 years. I grew up with long hair. And the shock of realizing all the products I tried in the last 2 years were all Keratin filled. And most Non Sulphate and Non Paraben products have Keratin

    • @SJones-kk5lg

      Janay Burley I'm placing a conscious effort to control when protein is put in my hair. I scraped all products that have protein in the ingredient list and using only protein free ingredients in my routine. I will be more purposeful in using protein, especially now that I do henna every few months to tint my hair.

    I've just discovered I have protein sensitive hair thanks to your informative videos. I have started to reduce protein products and my hair is reacting much better, would you be able to recommend a protein and triethanolamine free gel?

    • @IydaMichael
      @IydaMichael  5 років тому +3

      Two of my fave max hold gels contain triethanolamine : Ampro Clear Ice Protein Free Coconut Styling Gel and Extreme Wetline. It is very hard to find a commercial gel without triethanolamine because it is used to neutralize the pH so that the gel can form. If you dont need a max hold gel, you have more options like Uncle Funky's Daughter Curly Magic Curl Stimulator or Kiss My Face styling Gel Upper Management

    Would you say that a person with thicker, coarser hair type and/or texture like 4c is typically less protein senstive?

    • @IydaMichael
      @IydaMichael  6 років тому +1

      Omo A. I would say that someone with coarse texture will be more sensitive to protein and the curl pattern has nothing to do with it because someone with 4c hair can also have fine textured hair and will require protein more often.

    Bounce curl and Rizzo curl have drastically been helping improve my hair. Not all of their hair products are protein free. My hair is so damaged it doesn’t curl. It’s protein sensitive, too. Plus, my scalp is fucked up. Most Jews say they scalp problems dermatologist can’t treat. I use headquarters scalp lotion, but not all of their hair products are protein free either.

      Silicones are synthetic fats that are used to replace oils such as Shea butter and coconut oil in lotions, shampoos, etc. silicones are toxic for my hair and my scalp. Shema Israel. I have heard Indian and Black women complaining about the same thing, but Shea butter is too heavy for my hair. I need like avocado oil or something light
