I enjoy science-based natural hair content. Not enough content creators care to dive into the specifics, but I love it! Thank you for the information, sorry that happened to you
I read books and see a stylist and a trichologist. They stop me from doing 95% of what UA-camrs do to hair. lol! A book I recommend still even though it's 10 years old is The Science of Black Hair by Audrey Davis-Sivasothy.
@@SeunOkimi :hi this might sound goofy but when u say hold a curl, do u mean wet or dry? mine curls nicely when wet and up until fully dry then loses a lot of curl
Once a week is good enough. I think we all go through a phase when we go natural where we think we have to do the absolute most and apply all these products now. A good shampoo, condition and a styling product once a week should be enough.
I went natural in 2018, and I remember up until about a year ago, every UA-camr was pushing a 100 and 1 steps to take for natural hair. Wash day routines that take two or three days to finish. I knew that sounded like foolishness from the start. Each natural hair content creator was watching each other's videos and pushing that craziness. A good wash, a good conditioner, and a good sealant. Style and be done. This is why I enjoy people who push simple steps.
@@pistachioonut6683 Not the person you asked, but I am somewhat similar, however, it's just a spritz of water w/ some leave-in conditioner. It's going well, but I haven't really been consistent with it. I also use bond products and products with protein.
So glad you are bringing awareness to this. I used to suffer from this too and not letting my hair dry properly because I thought the water was good to stay there longer, that even when I put my hair in a bun, my scalp began to swell and get sensitive. I also slept with a conditioner like a leave-in. I didn't fully know how to take care of my hair at the time. I think my hair porosity changed over time too. It gets dry quicker and I have a lot of frizz. I had protein overload too. Now I listen to the instructions on my products. I deep condition only 15 minutes. We have to listen to our hair, observe it and change our ways accordingly. It's a learning process but for me my goal is long hair. Currently it's at mid armpit length and my hair loves a good trim when necessary. It's good to learn from other youtubers but we still have to know our hair for ourselves because we are all different. All the best to us all, in our relationship with our hair and it's journey.
I'm so guilty of this, especially the sleeping with conditioner. Today, I chopped 6 inches to start fresh. I don't believe in coincidences, so I know I was meant to see this video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge it's greatly appreciated 🙏🏽
Omg yes! These are excellent points! I'm always telling my clients to limit how long their hair is exposed to water for this very reason. Water has a weakening effect, both while the hair is wet and over time. Love this!
For the last few years I've been natural and I would have to honestly say every time I've done my research and searched up new information about my hair this channel has been the only One so far that's really helped me out. Because every other UA-camr honestly says the exact same thing about taking care of natural hair and it's just repeated information that nine times out of 10 might not work for everyone's hair type specifically 4C hair but this channel this lady really has changed the game and she's actually educating us about our natural hair and she's honestly the only one so far that has shown a different way of educating people about their hair and I am so thankful that I found her channel and to be subscribed to her keep it up Queen 💖
I'm not even playing, you're smile brightens my day. It is so full, reminiscent of childlike joy, just makes me feel good. Okay, I'ma watch the video. Omg, same girl. Before I knew what HF was I was like, "Wot?" my hair was soft AND dry???? 👀👀👀
i really like your enthusiasm when it comes to researching and seeing where you went wrong, where u can do better. alot of people are discouraged but you clearly get excited and i know its because u've learnt from it, im the same way. im glad that you're handling this in a positive way. not to mention how this will be helpful in a way to viewers that other youtubers are not providing in this light. thanks so much for sharing
I’m so glad I found Black Girl Curls a few months after my big chop. Simple hair care. I dry my wash and go with a hooded dryer. I never deep condition. The gel cast keeps my ends from tangling. Detangling on wash day (every 5-7 days) is a breeze. No need to prepoo. I sleep with a scarf and fluff and shake in the morning - no spritzing or restyling needed during the week. Easy, efficient, and effective hair care.
girl i would love your input, naturals on youtube are telling me to deep condition every 2 weeks. i keep protectivestyles in for 3-5 weeks so i would have to deep condition once a month. but do u think deep conditioning is bad???
@@grrrohmy665 In my (researched, tried, and true) opinion, deep conditioning is vital. My hair is not manageable without a monthly deep condition with PROTEIN. Protein-moisture balance is very important for everyone. GreenBeauty made a well-researched, in detail video about this.
@@grrrohmy665 I am not a professional nor do I wear protective styles. The cosmetologists that I follow encourage everyone (no matter what style you wear) to shampoo and condition their hair weekly. Deep conditioning isn’t bad. It’s just not necessary for me, based on my routine. The stylists consider deep conditioning a problem solver. Based on your routine, you might need it. I can’t say.
@@grrrohmy665 It depends on your routine. If you you condition your hair weekly like OP then DP isn't needed. Howver, you said that you keep in protective style for weeks so I'm assuming you aren't conditioning your hair during that time. I'm not a professional either but I'd suggest DP every time you take out your protective style.
3:36 is why I dont like washing my hair in braids (while wearing wigs or sew-ins) . the hair is already stretched out by the braids over a period of time, and while saturating w water makes it soften -it also weighs down on the stretched out strands. The hair eventually dries and tries to shrink up, but being that it is in braids it can't fully . I imagine some fragile points start to form along the strand , because of this constant tug of war. Kind of like a worn out rubberband. The kinkier the coil, the harder it will be to keep the hair uniform in the style when wet. Protein helps coat and reinforce the strand. I also dont airdry my hair anymore because I noticed that much more damage and breakage ane dryness. I HAVE to blowdry, no way around it for me. As long as I apply my moisturizer and heat protectant, the heat seals everything in.
This is what makes you different...your channel is extremely VALUABLE! You honestly bring the facts, notes, receipts, science! I love it! I had no idea about this! Thanks
I am a 62 year woman and I am so happy to experience and share the dedication you have to share your knowledge with your listeners. I am a long time subscriber. Thank you so much for sharing ! ❤️.
Girl you are the plug, I've been natural for so many years but I feel like I'm only now really learning. My hair has been over moisturised so much 😩 I'm planning to chop a few inches because the breakage is a lot and my hair thinned out so much at the ends, it makes so much sense. I can't thank you enough. Your videos came at a time when I was literally praying for answers because I was so confused as to what I was doing wrong. I can now see I was doing so much wrong. Thank you once again.
This is why I love Olaplex because it’s science based formula can scientifically repair damaged hair bonds and I also understand why it’s so important to listen to the directions on the bottle is when it comes to how long to leave each product on your hair and to do a strand test ahead of time. I also learned that our hair type(black hair) Is most vulnerable in the wet state.
All hair types are weaker when wet. Yeah definitely follow the directions on the container. I never use 5 minute deep conditioners. I always use 20-30 minute deep conditioners as recommended on the label directions.
Watching this video, I understand now that hair is like wood. A little bit of water and a lot of moisture is good, but just letting it continuously sit in water is bad and over conditioning can backfire, as the moisture starts to actually weaken the shaft. As someone else said in the comments, balance is key.
Water is a culprit for many things. I do not use tap water daily because where I live it has too many minerals, metals, chemicals and pollutants. I have to chelate every 4-6 weeks to get that stuff off of my hair and I only use tap water once a week when shampooing. I am always amazed by the difference after chelating. I didn't know about chelating until I read the Science of Black hair by Audrey Davis-Sivasothy.
Loved the research you did on this as I've often found that with type 4 hair influencers on this platform often encourage to keep hair wet. I have low porosity hair and have been natural nearly all my life ( had a phase in High school where I relaxed but cut it after a year). I generaly hate the water driping, so I often dry it with a Tshirt and air dry it. Meaning never washing it at night. And I've found that water is my best moisturizer, so I freshen my hair everyday by spritzing it with water every morning which dries real quick too. Just felt to share this after watching your video;)
I just wash condition and style...clarify when I need to but usually just use a moisturizing shampoo condition/detangle and style with a mousse or a botanical gel and sit under my hooded dryer no deep conditioning oils or butters and my hair is thriving
I never understood why some naturals wet their hair every day. Someone on UA-cam did it and people thought it was a good idea. Ladies dry your hair after you wash it.
It’s because we had that max hydration trend some years ago because of that hairdresser , I think his name is Dicky... ambigus looking black man, with freckles . He says black women with type 4 hair should sport a wash and go and cowash at least every 3 days. it may work for those with straighter or curly hair but I don’t believe it is the answer for kinky hair.
I wet my hair everyday because it grows my hair Very quickly. I allow it to dry and I lightly shirt dry it. When I was not doing this (only wetting once per week with washing) my hair grew a lot slower. I just big chopped Sept or Oct. 2020 to 1 inch. My hair is already about 4 inches longer and it has not been a year yet. I'm 4c. Do what you want, of course, but it works for me and works for many others.
This happened to me when I use to sleep in my conditioner with a heat cap on 😩. When I tell you! I fucked up lol I was mortified. Thank you for sharing this! Because no one tells us this is even possible at first!
@@luciaescobarz Olaplex gang gang! Lol! I had it done at the salon because I got enough products and also I know my stylist could fix it there and then if it went wrong. Lol!
Thank You for breaking moisture overload in simple terms and giving examples of how it can occur and how to fix it. I definitely learned something during this video.
I’ve been dealing with breakage for years now wondering what was wrong but this video helps make a LOT of sense of what was going. I have been doing a lot of these things like styling on soaking wet hair and going to sleep and still waking up with damp hour 12+ hours later. Definitely going to make some changes and hopefully I can finally see some improvement in my hair. Thank you for this video!
Hurray for hair science! It's nice to see that we ladies in the medical and scientific world can inspire each other. I wish you all the best on your new natural hair journey. -Ede V NIT Labs
You are totally right Seun I’m currently facing this same moisture overload my hair is breaking seriously 😒 it literally fall off my hand whenever I touch it. I’m actually learning a lot this period is so challenging for me cause of this whole problem. Thanks hunni I love this video
Girl !!!!! you have just figured out an issue that took me years to understand. I kept thinking it was my ends so i kept cutting my hair, then i thought it was because i was using silicone based products so stopped using those. it was only until a couple of months that i found out that i had hygral fatigue as i was doing all the wrong things and i had zero idea what a protein treatment was😓 . IMAGINE. Bare in mind i have been a careless natural for over 7 years . I reckon you will be a successful natural . ❤️ and i love these types of videos 💕
omg I went through the exact same process as you did. I only found out that the issue was hygral fatigue a little over a month ago, and I've done a couple of light protein treatments. My hair has gotten a bit better since then, but I'm still seeing lots of hair fall and it's still really soft and flat so I have no idea what to expect in the next few months or what to do for my severe damage. If you don't mind me asking, is your hair healthy now? If so, how long did it take and what did you do to get there?
Thank you for saying this. I’ve heard a lot of talk about the “3 step method” where they use no oils and butters. And one of the things I always hear from them is “use lots of water !WATER ! WATER! WATER!” But I’m always scared that they’ll over do it and end up with water damage.
Yes, at first I was saying I just got it cut but I basically did a big chop lol. This is like the 3rd time I've big chopped. I've been seeing so many people big chop lately.
@@christianaunderwood The trichologists taught me some things that was never mentioned on UA-camr. My hair is too ultra fine to be braided in box braids or cornrows. Only two or three french braids or twists. Oils, butters, grease and styling products were causing an allergic reaction on my scalp. When I saw them I was natural for 10 years too in 2019.
@@marleyhill34 Omg. You actually sound like me too. I was also getting breakage after braids because my hair was fine too. And last summer I was experimebting with a bunch of oils in Diy products not realizing it was the oils giving me scalp problems. I learned thaty hair just needs water shampoo, conditiiner and minimal styling products to be happy. It's made my routine so much easier.
I've watched a dozen videos on hygral fatigue by now, and yours is the first one that explained it in a way I could understand. Thank you for including your history with moisture and sharing what you've learned. Subscribe!
Wow! Very detailed and informative content here. I'm in love! I've been natural for 12 years and I remember that I used to get this moisture overload issue a few times back in the day, and it was due to all the things you mentioned, especially overnight deep conditioning. I quickly learned how not to do that, and I haven't had hygral fatigue in about 7-8 years. :)
To be honest ... that’s common in African culture that’s how you learn not to show your pain ... which I find not very ... don’t know I am learning to show my pain when I’m hurt and to smile when I am good ....
I didn't know different oils had such different characteristics. I'd like a video on that. What various oils are good at/for.❤️ Thanks for the great information!
I watch this right after I wash out my over night deep conditioner lol. Anyways I’ve been struggling to understand why my hair has been falling out so easily in the shower. This video gave me so much clarity and I’m definitely gonna do a protein treatment and keep all your other tips in mind. Thank you~
This actually happened to me before. I suspected it was bc I would sit deep conditioner in my hair overnight with a cap bc natural youtubers told me to do so. I ended “transitioning” even though I’ve been natural my whole life! It was a devastating process but my hair is a lot better now.
About 11+ years ago I told some American UA-camrs about sleeping with DC/sweat caps on their heads over night. Girl they came for me (and I came back for them 😆). The Caribbean subscribers backed me because we know these things from YEARS of experience. Not only does it cause damage to hair, you are likely to catch a Cold, affect Sinuses, suffer headaches ,get Conjunctivitis/Pink Eye.
Extremely informative thanks so much. I’m 9 months into my big chop and started out using a lot of ayurvedic herbs & products. I’ve decide to now do protective styles for the remainder of the year such as corn rolls with a draw string ponytail and faux locs. I’m in box braids now, which I’m thinking I won’t ever do again even though I love them. The parting is too small & I don’t like big box braids, but hey I’m leaning as I go. You just got a new subie with this one!
I like these videos they're very informative. A lot of natural hair girls have moved on to bigger and better things so I'm so happy that you're taking this journey with your big chop.
Yes! I’ve noticed my hair does not like being wet too long. I have to limit the time I spend washing and how frequently I wash because my hair will break entirely off smh
I liked how informational this vid was! I hope more naturals become aware of this info, I know for the longest plenty of naturals (especially in my family🙄) used to peddle spraying hair with water constantly to "refresh" it and I caught on that that wasn't good for hair but I still hear it to this day! I also have used a blowdryer faithfully in my routine as a low porosity natural for years and it has only helped me. I know I'm technically breaking some of the natural hair rules but hey🤷🏾♀️ don't think my hair's ever been stronger or freer of split ends/fairy knots!
Whoosh! I discovered you some hours ago and then several of your videos after, I'm in love, literally!🥺 I love your honesty, your expressions, your dedication, your emotions. Whoo! Its an inspiration. You're an inspiration. Then I see this video posted 5 hours ago, and that's like the shortest timeframe and I'm really excited to be making this comment especially knowing that you actually read through and reply too.. In a few days, I'll be one month into my 365 days hair journey, just basically a journey of hair consciousness, treating your hair right and knowing your hair for yourself.. For the second month, I want to be more intentional about research, observing my hair and documentation, your videos too a major contribution to that decision. I don't know how, but I would really love to work with you. Thank you soo much for what you do✨
This is such an interesting and useful video. I love the fact that you refer to actual research papers and not just anecdotes. Perhaps further studies will take place off the back of them. I'd love to see more research into black hair, especially in the UK.
I watched your video last weekend and you helped me figure out what was wrong with my hair ..it was a light bulb moment...I did a protein treatment and didn't over load with all the extra creams and conditioners. Now my hair holds its curl and is fluffy and not stringy and weighed down....💜 so happy 😊
I think it is amazing that you when natural on your one will am in 7th grade right now and I’ve always been unsatisfied with my 4c hair but when I started watching you it mad be more confident.
I have never heard of moisture overload or hygral fatigue. The last time i've had a perm, I was 13. I'm 34 so i've had natural hair for a long time now. It was when I was getting full sew ins that I realized my scalp produces its own oil/grease. So at the salon when they would add grease, oils, leave in, etc., my head would be so itchy. Then when i started doing my own sew ins, still adding all that moisturizer products, it would still be so itchy and during my take downs i would see gunk of product that my hair didn't take. That's when i realized, i didn't need moisture. The ironic part was my scalp would be gunky but my ends would be brittle. I stopped using products that had sulfate in them. I stopped using hair spray. I no longer greased my scalp and I only use leave in when i'm blowing out my hair (before braiding) because it acts like a heat protectant. Now my hair is the softest its ever been in my entire life. I believe my 4C hair has so much coils that moisture gets trapped in it. I know you're transitioning from straight to natural so you probably didn't realize that your coils trapped the water in your hair and that's why it didn't drip. Happens to me all the time until I actually towel dry it and the towel becomes very damp. You probably thought it was dry right after the shower because straight hair drips. The mistake is understandable. Because your hair is natural now, use less product. Don't use the same products you were using on your permed hair. Try only one bottle of whatever you prefer and see how your hair reacts to it. Then if you need more/different products, then add them but one by one. Not all at once. Also, ALWAYS DRY YOUR HAIR. Towel dry, paper towel dry, blow dry, air (watch some netflix and sit in front of a fan) dry. It doesn't matter how, it needs to dry. Like the corners of a bathtub, if it doesn't dry, mildew will occur. Same for hair. We don't want hair mildew, so it must be dry before adding product on 4C hair. Them coils will soak up everything and keep it there so drying is imperative. Love your channel and thanks for sharing your hair journey with us 😊
Great video. Folks only need to wet their hair when washing it and drying after styling is the key. Simple. Pre pooing, protein treatments (not to be confused with a conditioner with some protein) aren't even necessary as a prevention. Washing your hair 1-2 times a week will NOT cause hygral fatigue. Everyday "remoisturizing" or leaving hair wet after washing/styling might though. The problem is people often already have chemically treated/damaged/frequently heat styled or naturally thin strands. This means likely to be porous and vulnerable to hygral fatigue and then constantly keep it wet/damp with water and products and never mechanically dry their hair. We just have to simplify our process and stop chasing a **feeling** of softness that dampness/deep conditioning gives us. Using oils to block out *excess* moisture when we can just use adequate moisture and not overdo is counterproductive.
I wash my hair every 3rd day. Clean scalp is equal to healthy hair. I can’t stand build up. Men wash their hair everyday and it grows like a bush. Why is it different for women hair. 🤷🏿🤷🏿♀️🤷🏿♀️
My boyfriend washes his hair once or twice a week. Men have a *slight* genetic advantage because of their higher testosterone levels. It’s not enough of a difference to be notable (6.5% faster on average according to studies). Since men generally have shorter hair than women, their hair growth is a lot more noticeable. This doesn’t mean it grows significantly faster than women. Also, as someone stated above, they aren’t typically in their hair creating different styles like women like to do! Moral of the story: Low manipulation and wash your hair whenever you realize you need to! Whether that’s a few times a week or a couple times a month. But we already know that!
👋🏿👋🏿 absolutely amazing. Everything you said was on point. If I spray my hair with a lot of water based moisturizer after I'm done and style I will blow dry for five minutes to soak up the water. It's still will be moisturized only not wet. Thank you the information you put out.
Loved this video. I use a hooded dryer to dry my hair every wash day which is every two weeks for me. Within a month, I use a moisturizing deep conditioner on one wash day and a protein deep conditioner on the other. I don't refresh my hair between wash days. I have been natural since March 2019 when I big chopped from relaxers and I have no issues with my hair's elasticity. I have a fierce bounce back. Your videos are always helpful and fun so I look forward to the coming content.
Thank you soo much for making this video. I’ve been trying to figure out why my hair breaks off so easily and is soo fragile. I detangle in the shower and sometimes I’m in there for hours with the hot water.. which I assume makes your hair expand even more. Thank you Seun for educating me!
Thank you sis, people don’t realize that actually water is the enemy not oil, my hair started growing much more when I started protecting with oil more then moisturizing.
You missed the point of the video. Water is not the enemy, prolonged exposure of hair to water is bad. Oil is great for creating slip and preventing tangles but it cannot replace water as it does not moisturise. Anything in excess can become destructive.
THANK YOU for this!!! I've been preaching this forever. I'm in the cosmetic industry (going on 15yrs). When I first went natural (first time 7M ago) I was constantly going through over moisturization. Actually before I big chopped my new growth was over moisturized (that's another story for another day 😁). Long story short type 4 hair can def be over moisturized. we type 4 natural have to realize our hair isn't going to feel cotton soft or shiny and that doesn't mean it's not moisturized. That's just the texture (at least mine). How I know my hair is moisturized or not is the way it looks, not feel (because 1 day after wash day it no longer feels cotton soft). I have 4a hair so it's a bit easy for me. When my hair is moisturized it's extremely defined, when dry it a super frizzy ball with about 30% of it defined.
Hey girl! Ayyyeee back with another natural hair video! Looking beautiful as always! Sorry to hear that your hair got slightly damaged but thank you so much for this video! I learned so much!
You gave me the rationale as to why post washing and deep conditioning I immediately braid it in two but the next morning I put a dryer on cool and dry it out then rebrand.
I'm not new to your channel. I believe I joined two years ago. However, I just had to get on here this time to say you provided the best explanation on how protein works I've ever heard on UA-cam. Thanks and yes your video was extremely helpful.
Wow I was just doing research on this to see if my hair has been affected by or and if not to see how I can prevent it. I love the research you did and I especially appreciate the pictures, it really help to see it rather than just read the description of moisture overload. Also thank you for sharing how we can fix it! This was great Seun!!
The first thing to figure out about your hair is your porosity and go from there,. At the end of the day your porosity is key to choosing products, how to apply, the techniques to use, etc😊
Great video, very scientifically supported and I appreciate that! ❤️ I’ve definitely experienced the low porosity no drip effect, as well as what I think were the effects of hydral fatigue from doing exactly the same as you - adding too much water based product to the already wet hair, and then bunning it up tightly (my stretch method) or tying it up with a scarf - all under the guise of providing extra moisturization to extra dry hair. Too much, too much, lol I definitely think the responsible use of a blow dryer or a hood dryer (my preference) to accelerate the drying of the hair is beneficial, especially for the low porosities (otherwise my hair can stay wet forever, long enough to get to the next wash even 😒
Yeah you gotta be careful of that! Moisture overload sounds like it’s nearly impossible but it can definitely sneak up on you. But don’t worry, after some protein treatments i’m sure she’ll bounce back eventually! Best of luck!
Omg! This happens to me all the time!!! I didn’t know exactly what happens. I would feel like the water rotted my hair if it was wet for too long but never I never was really sure why. Thank you so much! I learned something new today.
Definitely research moisture overload, protein overload and chelating! things my stylists growing up never explained to me!!! It was actually a white stylist with pink straight hair who told me to go and get a daily protein spray!!
Bingo! I co-wash daily, and I avoid hygral fatigue altogether by pre-pooing with coconut oil similar to what you said in your video. It works. To avoid holding water in your hair do not sleep with a plastic cap, use a hair bonnet or a satin pillowcase to dry your hair quicker.
Love this video! If your on the fense about using blow dryer, I recommend getting a diffuser attachment. It distributes the heat more evenly which can help prevent heat damamge.
I would never go to bed with wet hair or wet hair with deep conditioner. I'm no chemist, but that's a no-brainer to me. Loved the video. People need to hear about this.
Ok but it’s crazy because a lot of us natural girls especially the girls with looser curls wet their hair EVERYDAY some even drench their hair with water before stepping out of the house. Thanks for informing us
I've been natural for 13 years. Never had this happen. I think it's due to combing and sleeping in wet hair without adding any butters and oils first. Sleeping in conditioner on wet hair is ridiculous because conditioner is meant to rinse out, it does nothing but soften after shampoo. Leave-in conditioner is a better option because the hair detangles easily. All mammals can safely get their hair wet everyday all day multiple times a day and not fall out. This happened possibly from a defective product she used, she said she slept with conditioner in wet hair. I don't know. But water doesn't break off hair unless it's contaminated and toxic.
Very effective presenter. Thank you for the definition of “fatigue” put in such an exact way. Already your content in this video is expanding beyond our aesthetic experience. And I’m only 2 minutes in.
I've never experienced hygral fatigue to my knowledge but I'm guilty of leaving my conditioners and DP in my hair too long (couple of hours) I recently learned that if a conditioner says 3-5 mins it's actually what's needed for it to work. No more than 10 min should be needed. This helps save time on wash days.
Love it! Number 1 reason I subscribed to your channel. I love all the science-y stuff and all the research. Sorry it couldn't just be a topic and had to also be an experience but hey. If anyone is the queen of hair care and is able to bounce it back it's you. Loving the wrap too. Tell Momma O I said what's up? 💙 💙 💙
get you hair porosity and density. Low porosity, low density: moisturize at least once every 2-3 weeks but dont use products to thick that will weigh your hair down Low porosity, high density: moisturize at least once every 2-3 weeks using thicker products High porosity, low density: moisturize once a week using lighter products High porosity, high density: either moisturize every day using light products or once a week using heavier products. Now in between the time that you arent moisturizing LEAVE YOUR HAIR ALONE. Low manipulation styles, protective styles are the way to go. You'll see a major difference in the health of your hair doing this. Edit : also dont only use water to moisturize your hair. You wouldnt use water to moisturize your skin right? It's the same with your hair, it dries it leading to breakage. Instead you can use a leave in, oil, possibly grease or something natural like aloe vera gel.
Great video. Been there with the water damage -- for me, it took several years for the culmination of damage to fully present itself. Unable to "fix" it, I eventually cut the damage off. I now use Aquis 01 Prime Water Defense PreWash without fail to help prevent it from happening again -- highly recommend this product but it does contain Keratin aminos so for those that avoid protein, oil -- especially coconut, hempseed, or walnut -- also work extremely well for reducing the amount your cuticles contract and absorb water (apply oil on DRY hair and let it sit for at least an hour before washing). On another note - you are stunning in a headwrap (and with your natural hair ♥️).
I am not really sure that is what happened. I think it might be too early for you to be experiencing that. What of people who wash their hair everyday? It doesn't fall out. I feel it might be part of the residue of permed hair that is falling out but that's just my thought. However I absolutely doubt that you can be suffering from Hygral fatigue after just a few weeks of being natural:)
The same thing happend to me. I stoped using store products and my breakage reduced significantly. Now I just use clay to cleanse, water to hydrate and grease. The grease I make myself with shea butter and vaseline mix!
That is EXACTLY what happened to me. I got severe HF when I 1st went natural, but it happened over a period of mos and I didn't figure out until much later that the damage was almost entirely (if not completely) concentrated on the hair that I didn't realize was still relaxed.
@Graceful Knots People who wash their hair everyday probably have hair with one or more of these characteristics: looser texture, lower density, high porosity, and/ or enough length for water to slide downward. These characteristics allow hair to dry quickly. Natural hair takes forever to dry on its own when it’s short, high density, and tightly coiled like Seun’s. You add low porosity to the mix, you can get hygral fatigue from looking at water too long 🥲. Seun left her hair wet for days. Didn’t balance moisture with protein. That’s the thing with damage. Heat damage, water damage, damage from over manipulation. It only takes one bad choice sometimes. Thankfully Seun seems to be understanding her hair and knows what she needs to do to fix what’s wrong.

I read books and see a stylist and a trichologist. They stop me from doing 95% of what UA-camrs do to hair. lol! A book I recommend still even though it's 10 years old is The Science of Black Hair by Audrey Davis-Sivasothy.

Once a week is good enough. I think we all go through a phase when we go natural where we think we have to do the absolute most and apply all these products now. A good shampoo, condition and a styling product once a week should be enough.
Yes indeed. Or if your like my mum and don't like styling product probably a good oil conditioner
I moisturize everyday morning and night
@JohnDoe-qq8et how is your hair doing?

@@victorysampson thank you sooo much my love !
Thanks a lot. I enjoyed reading this. Found it helpful too

Thanks for writing this
Didn't even know water damage was a thing! I always learn so much about my hair from your videos
It makes me really happy to be able to help!

Yes! Only blow dry on low heat/cool when it's really necessary, as it can also cause damage from too much heat
Not towel
Use a micro fabric towel. Never a regular towel. Micro fabric towels are like the towel version of what Shamwow does in soaking up so much water.

Thank you sm
I wash my hair every 3rd day. Clean scalp is equal to healthy hair. I can’t stand build up. Men wash their hair everyday and it grows like a bush. Why is it different for women hair. 🤷🏿🤷🏿♀️🤷🏿♀️
I agree
They don't manipulate their hair like we do
I heard it’s cause of their hormones like they have more testosterone but I haven’t checked if that’s true
they don't use heat on their hair.
Oils make my scalp itch unfortunately. No oils or butters or grease for me. Even some gels make my scalp itch. The end of my product junkie-ism. lol!
You missed the point of the video. Water is not the enemy, prolonged exposure of hair to water is bad. Oil is great for creating slip and preventing tangles but it cannot replace water as it does not moisturise. Anything in excess can become destructive.

This is the most interesting and accurate video I've seen on youtube about hygral fatigue
thank you!
You're very welcome! And it's ok, I'm glad I got to learn a lot from it still!!
You gave me the rationale as to why post washing and deep conditioning I immediately braid it in two but the next morning I put a dryer on cool and dry it out then rebrand.
Girl, you are so so beautiful, I literally can't. Your skin is glowing and that knowledge, yasss girl, inform us!!! Thank you!
Thank you!!!!
I'm not new to your channel. I believe I joined two years ago. However, I just had to get on here this time to say you provided the best explanation on how protein works I've ever heard on UA-cam. Thanks and yes your video was extremely helpful.
A whole research presentation 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
😆
Wow I was just doing research on this to see if my hair has been affected by or and if not to see how I can prevent it. I love the research you did and I especially appreciate the pictures, it really help to see it rather than just read the description of moisture overload. Also thank you for sharing how we can fix it! This was great Seun!!
The first thing to figure out about your hair is your porosity and go from there,. At the end of the day your porosity is key to choosing products, how to apply, the techniques to use, etc😊
This is the truth 🙌.
Thank you, I didn't know I needed this. I love how you make such quality videos that are easy to understand😁.
I'm really glad you enjoyed it!
Great video, very scientifically supported and I appreciate that! ❤️
I’ve definitely experienced the low porosity no drip effect, as well as what I think were the effects of hydral fatigue from doing exactly the same as you - adding too much water based product to the already wet hair, and then bunning it up tightly (my stretch method) or tying it up with a scarf - all under the guise of providing extra moisturization to extra dry hair. Too much, too much, lol
I definitely think the responsible use of a blow dryer or a hood dryer (my preference) to accelerate the drying of the hair is beneficial, especially for the low porosities (otherwise my hair can stay wet forever, long enough to get to the next wash even 😒
Yes! We are the same. That was me almost exactly! It's real.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
How I know my hair is high porosity. It will dry withing the hour even if it is braided or twisted up. lol!
You look beautiful!
Thank you so much
Yeah you gotta be careful of that!
I'm really glad!
Definitely research moisture overload, protein overload and chelating! things my stylists growing up never explained to me!!! It was actually a white stylist with pink straight hair who told me to go and get a daily protein spray!!
@@marleyhill34 thank you! Will do
I have combated dealing with hygral fatigue by using aphogee texture treatment and 2 step treatment.. Amazing results
And this is why I sit under a warm dryer every time o do my hair unless I’m going for a long walk on a hot sunny ☀️ day.
Oops, we forgot to warn her!! 😭
👏🏾👏🏾but she is learning so no problem
lol
Let's just warn her about protein overload too, even though she knows
@@taneishajohnson3790 Chelating hair too!! hard water ruined my hair for 10 years before I bought a chelating shampoo!
@@Jenomous thank you. There is more to it. My first thought was was it hard water or soft water or something?
Very effective presenter. Thank you for the definition of “fatigue” put in such an exact way. Already your content in this video is expanding beyond our aesthetic experience. And I’m only 2 minutes in.
Thank you!!❤️
I've never experienced hygral fatigue to my knowledge but I'm guilty of leaving my conditioners and DP in my hair too long (couple of hours) I recently learned that if a conditioner says 3-5 mins it's actually what's needed for it to work.
Low porosity, low density: moisturize at least once every 2-3 weeks but dont use products to thick that will weigh your hair down
Low porosity, high density: moisturize at least once every 2-3 weeks using thicker products
High porosity, low density: moisturize once a week using lighter products
High porosity, high density: either moisturize every day using light products or once a week using heavier products.
@@cmw1336 yes I guess it was the hair that was still relaxed that fell out. It does take a while to get rid of all the relaxed hair:)
@@maryhaward7022 honestly I am a fan of grease, butter and oils, all the things they ask us not to use anymore. I just don't listen cos it works for me and I am recovering from alopecia. I did a video to refute the latest "no oil no butter theory". People should just do what works for them :)
Oh noooo, hydras fatigue is the worst! A good protein treatment (or a few of them) should bring your hair back but I know you're well equipped to figure this out! 🙌🏾
A++ job!!! Seun the Chemist! The break down was so helpful. I love your patience and willingness to face any unexpected challenges that occur. Keep it up!! Btw... the headwrap 😍😍😍😍😍 you are a beautiful woman🙌
Thank you so much!
I have never heard of this and it is explaining so much to me, omg. Thank you for all of this research! 😍
You have to keep balanced. You can also suffer from protein overload if you go crazy with protein treatments.
You are more than welcome
You have a beautiful smile. Keep smiling through your transition 😊.
Thank you!!!
