Ezzard Charles is a top ten of all time boxer but is sadly vastly underrated and underappreciated.
Charles, who was the biggest influence of the boxing master James Toney, had a perfect stance of the right hand under the chin and the left arm across the body.
With the head off centre line in his natural position it meant Charles was very versatile with his boxing.
He could easily make you miss using the outside slip in this stance, he could better parry punches, throwing you off balance. Even his hooks were delivered with his head off centre line.
The right hand under the chin also meant his lead right travelled quicker as it had less distance to travel as opposed to being higher and by the side of his chin. With the lead arm lower across the body Charles would use it as a barrier or shield to protect against punches especially the right hand.

With his head of the centre line he could also generate a lot of power on his right side due to the weight shift when the punch is thrown. It’s crazy to me because when I watch him he’s almost using a early Philly shell in a way

@@gussstavo because the gloves were smaller than and it was easier to slip/ dodge punches also, the gloves were way more compact so you could break your hand way more frequently, so they went to they body much more, also if you watch a lot of fighters now they fight with a high guard due to the punches being bigger

Can you elaborate on stepping with the jab to get inside? What I mean is guys like Tyson or Qawi they kind of leap with their jab- when they jab they step with both feet at the same time instead two seperate steps lead foot rear foot. Isnt that Dangerous and not textbook so to speak? The question is probably when and when not to use it

Charles is more than a Top 10 all-time boxer, he is 1 of the Top 5 pound for pound pugilists to ever lace up a pair of gloves. When you are clearly the best fighter of a particular weight division, you should be placed on boxing's Mount Rushmore. There are 4 boxers who meet that criteria and include Roberto Duran at lightweight, Sugar Ray Robinson at welterweight, Ezzard Charles at light heavyweight, and Muhammad Ali at heavyweight. There is a long list of candidates at #5 on the all-time list, but due to the level of his competition, I would rank Sugar Ray Leonard as the 5th best fighter in boxing history. Fans of Willie Pep, Sandy Saddler, Salvador Sanchez, Floyd Mayweather, Marvin Hagler, Carlos Monzon, Archie Moore, and Michael Spinks also have strong arguments for their candidate to be placed at the #5 spot.

do you think this style can be used today? Boxing gloves got bigger and therefore people simply use a high guard. but I am really curious if you can use Charles´ stance today, because the defense is more active. the high guard, in comparison, not so much

It depends what type of fighter your going for really, most fighters in them days with that style with some what counterpunchers like Charles and Louis. I think if you were to use this style today you’d have some success being a counterpuncher but it’s probably better to use the modern day stance.

I use this stance when sparring taller opponents, opponents that have a a better jab and opponents that like to circle to the left. It works well with such fighters, due to the fact one is in a well balanced stance. One can pull, slip either side , roll under crosses and hooks, parry, duck Etc really easily. But when facing a pressure, volume punchers its a little more tricky because it requires distance to do such things.
