The first race with Rex's ghost is actually so deep. I remember a reddit post of a man saying he used to play racing games with his dad when he was younger, they'd try to get the best lap time. About 15 years later, after his dad died, he stumbled upon that old console and loaded it up again. He launched a time trial session just like back in the days, and his dad's ghost, who was still holding their best time, appeared. Now a grown up, the man realized he could easily beat his dad lap time, but always decided to stop the run before the finish line to not overright the record, and keep his dad's ghost in the game. Speed wants his brother to remain in people's minds, as a great driver and a recordman. Beating his lap time would mean Rex would be forgotten forever. And on top of that, the rest of this whole first sequence tells us how important it is for the Racer family and Speed to keep Rex where he belongs, in the records rankings
There was a scene that I wrote in a story I'll never finish with this specific tone, but instead of the racer beating their family member's record, it's a family friend not trusting themself to break their best friend's father's record, resulting in said friend, fellow racer, and the record holder's son actually getting mad their trusted racer friend refused to break it(despite the fact the son could never bring himself to break it lol) and I never realized until recently when I rediscovered this movie, that I based it on this lol
well allow me to say thanks. my friend and I saw this in theaters on a whim then a few more times because we knew we would probably never be able to see it on the big screen again.
I took an intro to film course in college and this was one of the few movies we watched where attendance was mandatory. I think the lesson was based on the use of color in film, but I remember the professor raving about this movie and how it was hated for no reason. It was always one of my favorites growing up. I'd watch it on long car rides with a portable DVD player and play the Wii game for hours on end. Underrated is an understatement for sure
I played the Wii game too! It’s a very underrated gem, just like the movie. It has its own settings as well as settings from the movie, you can play as literally every racer, and it has its own form of C A R C O M B A T. When have you seen a racing game you fight WITH cars and can do specific moves and combos like a fighting game?! And the fact that it works???? Insane!
The thing is if they did make this film suitable for mainstream audiences, it would've been a big disappointment to hardcore speed racer fans. The high-speed camera movements probably made average viewers sick to the point of ignoring everything happening in front of them. Maybe the CGI looked cheezy and different from what viewers are used to. But contextually, everything made sense. It's supposed to be a little cartoonish. I don't know what went wrong but maybe the average person didn't have any taste for this kind of movie. Perhaps it could have been less innovative with the vehicle design and do something more relatable. For example, putting rear-wheel steering on the Mach 6 was probably too innovative for the average person. Seeing the cars drift, but not actually drifting maybe looked confusing. I absolutely loved this movie though. It did everything so well.
young me was AMAZED in the theaters back in 2008. i hyperfixated on the movie for a good 2 years after that, even buying every single speed racer hotwheel
I don't know about anyone else, but this film makes me tear up during the character monologues (which are seriously excellent) and the final race. They are just seriously powerful scenes.
I saw the movie two weeks after the release, ignoring opinions until I finally got to go to it with my little sister (whom I used to watch the show with on adult swim). Despite the negativity I was still picking up about the movie the theater was still packed. And when Speed won the final race I leaped from my seat pumping my fist in the air, loudly proclaiming my joy with tears running down my face. That is the only time I have ever had an outburst like that in a theater.
@@MaxLadik I saw the film opening night. I was a BIG Speed Racer fan as a child. I knew it was not going to be a hit. They made the movie too late. Speed had its “renaissance” in the 90s and they tried to get it made but never got it done. I loved the movie and cry every time I see the end. Usually when the lady race announcer goes “Speed Racer, whooo.”
My wife and I were experiencing a work-related physical separation when this movie was out. I saw it on the tail-end of its run and absolutely loved it. When I next spoke to my wife on the phone, I suggested she see it before it left theaters. She saw it three times in the theater, and the next time we spoke, she immediately sang the theme song to me. When we reunited, we made a special trip to see it in IMAX for its final weekend in the next state over. We loved it so much that it inspired us to get a home theater system, complete with HD projector and Playstation 3 (for its blu-ray capabilities), specifically to watch the blu-ray of Speed Racer when it came out on a 100-inch movie screen. We bonded over loving this movie, and we still use the home theater setup (after moving twice) to this day.
@@srspanksalot4501 His comment is condescending, but he isnt far off the truth: The movie is insane levels of shlock that doesnt give a damn about anything but the colorful spectacle. Its not even about racing anymore, the cars are merely plot devices, its so extremely over the top, it looks silly to some. For me, it does to. Its unbearable levels of cringy shlock for me that has nothing to do with racing or cars despite showing people racing in cars.
@@turdle837 to me that is the entire charm of the movie. One of the only anime adaptations to stay true to the style and atmosphere of anime, which is usually very corny and silly and all about spectacle even in series moments. To me it’s a heartfelt story about family, love, and passion.
This movie was the definition of "Ahead of its time". I remember seeing on DVD when I was little and liking it, but now when I'm older, and I rewatch this, it is incredible. I feel like if this was to come out in theatres today, it would easily clean house. I respect the people who made this movie, because you can tell they went all out. They didn't spare anything and they weren't afraid to do it. This movie is amazing
I love the world building! We're looking at an alternate earth where WWII never happened (look at their tech: no NASA, no GPS, almost no semiconductors, the "1943 Prix" happened) Japan never got destroyed/rebuilt (ninjas still exist!) and instead of football stadiums every major city has a ginormous crazy nanotech-material race track because the ONLY organized sport is automobile racing. Amazing.
A really good bit of world buidling was near the very beginning when Speed leaves his school to get picked up by his brother, and a bunch of crazy cars are just parked on the curb around it. This is just how it is in this world.
@@superninja252 no, they didn’t. There are no records or depictions of ninjas ever in history. You’re spreading a myth without realising it. The same way as samurai never used swords and the katana is actually an ineffective weapon
Speed: “If you’re so smart, why don’t you tell me why I should keep driving?” Racer X (Rex): Sorry… but that’s for you to figure out. I just hope that when you do… that I’m there to see it!” One of the best brother to brother scenes ever
Speed Racer was also my favorite movie growing up, and every time I searched about it then, They said horrible things about it, so I thought I was a weirdo and crazy for loving it so much, lately this movie has aged like wine, so many good content creators saying great things about it, and I feel like “I was right and they were wrong on this” lol
My dad had the anime so when the movie came out I loved it. And watching it again recently it’s really a good movie. The writing is strong and the action/actors are perfect.
This film is just unabashedly fun. It does everything right. It's silly and campy, it's full of heart, it's got surprisingly good "bad" acting, and it's a glorious visual extravaganza. It's serious about not taking itself too seriously. There's basically nothing like it in live action. It's so much better than it gets credit for.
My favorite transition shot in this movie is when Speed and Trixie are having a conversation from two different cars during a race, then Racer X cuts in on their back and forth. The whole time the camera is zooming up and down the race track to who is talking and when. It's an amazing use of editing to show characters talking to one another without the use of cutaways.
Yeah timing was just unfortunate. It was released just one week after Iron Man and shortly before The Dark Knight and that was not easy to compete with.
When speed races X's ghost, I get chills. Hands down my favorite movie ever, it was very well executed and feels very true to the original anime from the 60s. It's unfortunate that other people don't take that into consideration when viewing the movie
Saw this one from Blockbuster when I was like 11, I remember my dad loved the final scene. He showed me the anime when I was a kid, I grew up watching it on DVD. Really glad people are waking up and realizing that it’s a pretty good movie. On top of all of that, great video.
@PakoVero I used to go to Blockbuster in DC in 08. You could tell it was near the end though, instead of renting I just bought movies bc they were selling off all their dvds 3 for $5.
It's literally impossible for me not to sub considering the hold Speed Racer has on me. Ever since I saw it in 2008 I've been telling everyone how good it is. It's only within the last few years that it's been getting a glimpse of the recognition it deserves. The moment I saw this video I had a massive smile on my face. Thank you.
I grew up watching the anime (in syndication) during the 70's. I was worried when they made this version (givin' Hollyweird's track record screwing things up). Boy was I wrong. It truely feels like anime come to life. The Whochowski's love and respect of the source material shines through. And I too wanted to know where Inspector Detector's amazing curved beard was.
Mr. Royalton was surprisingly a down-to-earth greatest villain, more precisely a half of senator armstrong. you got him in a big corporational position, saying his wretched mind of his evil deed, yet done for the sake of the world's reality that's also the same reality we're living in (biggest example out there, formula 1), and seeing Royalton break down during the final scenes just felt satisfying.
@@superninja252 immediately thought about Formula 1 when Royalton conveys the ugly of racing to Speed Racer. High-budget teams like Mercedes and Red Bulls gets the top spot easily, and media-driven choices to gain fame for certain monopolies in order to...*survive*, and more or less, a slight chance of possibly manipulation. (I will not discuss Abu Dhabi 2021 no more). And frankly, to see a movie as technically and visually exceeding expectations of all time makes me wonder why there aren't any movies that can get close to this.
Not to mention the Race monologue. He simply cannot understand Speed's passion for racing because his passion is a straight reversal. Royalton races to be the top for material gain and material control, and loves his job. Royalton isn't just the. Big Bad, he's Speed's foil and RIVAL for the duration of the film. The portag and antag just as passionate as each other in their own racing positions, but because of those positions, they'll never understand each other. And obviously that represents and affects their moral standings at opposite ends of the spectrum too.
Roger Allam did a brilliant job with his vocal delivery and mannerisms. He echoed the delivery of the American version, but didn't ape it, he always made it clean and unique and his own.
It's taken over 10 years, but regular people are just now begining to see this movie for what it's worth. The problem with it was it was WAY way ahead of it's time. Here's hoping the TV series doesn't get Cowboy Bebop'ed.
Honestly such an amazing video. I hope the algorithm picks up this video. You guys took your time with this video and it was worth it. I loved this movie and it really sums up how I feel about the film. I watched it like 10-20 times as a kid growing up and I got obsessed with the cars, the message, and everything else really.
There’s no way you just name dropped acceleracers! Another set of movies that’s way better than it has any right being! I also love the speed racer movie too, I remember seeing it opening day in imax and loving it!
@@JandZProductionshow Aaah yeah baby, you think you could give your thoughts on the Accelerons and things they made? Because people don't talk about them in reviews and just wait until you see the design reveal of one in the fourth movie, think you will love it.
Acceleracers is coming. I grew up with that and Highway 35, so I'm taking my time and ensuring that's it's not only very polished but is a definitive video on the movie and series. I will be going into EVERYTHING about that. Not sure on a release. But It will be the season 1 finale.
This detail is not mentioned much but the Grand Prix trophy at end IS THE TROPHY OF INDY 500 (also known as Borg-Warner Trophy) They even had put the Milk Drinking tradition of Indy 500 as well on the movie, showing that the movie was not just a love letter for the anime but for racing in general
I try not to, but these days on re-watches, I get choked up at the very start--when he's "racing the ghost of Rex Racer." From the visualizing of the translucent image of Rex's car, to the reaction shots of Speed's parents contemplating the ramifications of Speed's victory, to Speed's last minute decision to pull back and honor his brother's record... I almost cry just thinking about it. And I'm a middle age man. And that's just the establishing act of the film. It's a good movie.
To this day this is my favorite movie to just sit down and enjoy. I’m glad so many other people enjoy it as much as me. Watching the popping visuals being blended with live just captivated me, and the setting or usage never felt too out of place, and helped the film stand out even as a kid. The performances looking back were surprisingly great, with Emile Hirsch and especially John Goodman having some of the most telling facial expressions I’ve seen. And the racing. The Surprisingly good CGI, fluid cars and tracks, and especially the choreography on the races is still some of the best I’ve seen. It really feels like the cars are not vehicles so much extensions of their driver (an early movie theme). What I appreciate most as an adult is the soundtrack. I can’t not feel as Grand Ol’ Prix transitions to Reboot when speed powers up the Mach 6. It’s so good 🔥💗🙏
What I like about Spridal and Chim Chim in the movie is that even though some of us probably got some major whiplash transitioning from Royalton and Speed to them causing absolute mayhem, they DO end up uncovering the spear hook thing that latches on to the undercarriage, even though they're being... Them, they do add to the story. Edit: One theory I have about the T-180 races is that perhaps the Wachowskis also took inspiration from Nintendo's F-Zero, another racing series where the vehicles there reach some ludicrous speeds and the tracks twist and bend like crazy, just like in Mario Kart 8. (And the damn kid flips Royalton off before being booted off the building-! HAHAAAAAAAAAAA!)
Yeah when he mentioned Mario Kart 8 I was wondering why he didn't say F-Zero or Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed instead, those felt like more fitting comparisons
I was a kid, my dad loved the show, and I got to watch it as a kid. This movie was announced, and my dad took me to watch it. Then it happened in the final race! Speed flying to the top. Then it happened. I jumped out of my seat in the theater and yelled with all the might of a 12-year-old, GO SPEED RACER, GO! There was a big cheer and several people clapping, and a few other Speed Racers Go's!" I freaking love this movie. This movie was my everything! I loved that moment with my dad. This movie was everything to me for a while. I really wanted this movie to get a franchise.
I could write an essay about why I adore this movie. Thank you for putting all of my thoughts into one video. I just can't express how much I love this movie.
My first experience of Speed Racer was the Wii game, and now I’m on a mission to educate myself on where my favourite game comes from. I have to watch the movie now!
I found a link to this video on Reddit.... I love everything about this video and how you are self aware of what you are saying and how you say it. This video is critical of the Speed Racer franchise all while sounding true to your opinion. I love how this video was cut and positioned within the video. You joked with some fair criticism, all while respecting it and explaining why it did or did not work. .... I don't know what to say.. . but... .. Thank you... 🤧
I am constantly telling people this is my number 1 favorite movie. My aunt worked at a local movie theatre and when she watched me I'd get to see any movie I wanted for free . I saw this movie 11 times when it came out.
I still remember seeing this in IMAX I honestly got teared up at the end and when I told my friend if he liked it he was like it was okay...but for me, it was the best IMAX experience ever and I'm not even a Speed Racer fan! I honestly wished they re-released this movie in IMAX cause it was a treat to watch and I felt that people really missed out.
I know I’m 2yrs too late here, but I’ve watched a lot of these videos and they all fail to notice my favourite detail. The Tag Heuer Monaco in his locker at the start, the sign that not only did they care about the original anime but also cared about motorsport as a whole.
Movie is so slept on as the best live action anime adaptation. Saw this in the theater when it released with my pops and brother, so the memories a good one. Everything you said was on point
I’ve been waiting for a video like this for a long time to explain this movie to me, as a kid this movie was my favourite movie in which I kept quiet since it wasn’t popular with others. This video is amazing in both information and entertainment. I’m not good at explaining exactly why I like this movie but the way I usually go about it is saying that it has heart, it gives me chills watching the scenes, it’s funny at times and never fails to keep me engaged no matter how many times I’ve seen it.
I was a fan of the cartoon and was excited to see it in theater. I liked it the first time i saw it but had to see it twice. the second time it clicked more and I was absolutely blown away at how insanely good it was and so respectful and passionate about the source material. pure love oozes from this movie. and Yes, i agree i think the movie is actually better than the source material. and like i said i was a fan before the movie
I watched this when I was 4 living in England when my Dad took his PhD there. This and Cars would forever be my childhood movie. When almost every movies these days follow a certain formula this tries to be different and leaves a memory that cannot be forgotten.
To this day, if somebody asks me what my favorite movie is, I tell them Speed Racer. And if I get a weird look in response, I make sure I get a chance to sit them down and give it a proper chance. As somebody who's almost exclusively driven by passion, the theme of Speed following his own passion hits me where few other things ever can, and seeing him put it all on the line for the sake of embracing his pure, untainted relationship to his passion, it brings me to tears just about every time. But the themes aside, it's also just an extremely impressive, fun movie. The characters are enjoyable, their relationships, especially the family ones, feel believable and compelling, the cars are just the right flavor of overdesigned, and the races are a dizzying visual feast that'll leave you needing to catch your breath by the end of it. I could go on and on about every little thing I love about this movie, but I sincerely would be here all day.
There’s no reason why you should have this many subscribers I honestly thought you had like 420K subs but you only have 420. Amazing video speed racer my childhood fr
Speed Racer used to air late night on MTV (iirc) and I'd stay up late to watch it. Usually would drift off to sleep watching it. I went to see Iron Man, this unproven movie at the time and was floored by it. Then I went to see Speed in the theater and was blown away by how visually stunning it was. While everyone I knew in college was talking about Iron Man, I was trying to convince people to also go see Speed. It felt like I knew something no one else knew. Years later all the way until now, I've shown this off to anyone willing to watch and most of them agree that they wish they had seen it in theater. This movie rocks and yes please on the 4K Edition!!!
Oh im so happy ive stumbled across this. this was my favorite movie of all time (still is) and ive watched it around 50 times. Im about to make it 51 now. Thank you for showing the true colors of this beauty
This movie was everything to me but people close to me hated on it saying how terrible it was and that really hurt because of how much I love it. It just has an emotional connection that no other movie has made with me, having a brother who is just as devoted to his passion as me is what brings me close to this movie and I will never not love it even though I have to watch it by myself
This is in my opinion the most underrated movie of all time. I will always love it, even though I'm now adult. It's just such an insane work of art, and to this day, there isn't a movie that I've seen that's like it and the style it has.
I had the computer game on my old 386 in the '90s and watched the cartoons back in the '60s. My wife bought me the special edition DVDs of the cartoon that came in a tin Mach 5. I think you can understand how much I love this movie. I had the DVD of the movie, but it stopped playing for some reason. So one of my daughters found it on Netflix and clued me into that. I just turned 65 and still love Speed Racer--the cartoon, the game, and the movie. Thank you!
Dude! I have the exact same Mach 5 special edition tin box set! Had some really good bonus features on it. Thanks for sharing your experiences! Glad you enjoyed the video.
You completely unlocked a lost memory for me, at the time I was too young to understand and appreciate it for what it was, you best believe I went and watched and had a goofey smile on my face, especially cause of that silly duo! But yeah thanks! Definitely have a new subscriber!
When you think about it... Speed Racer is what Fast and the Furious wish it could have been. Fighting villains and saving the world yet still heavily focusing on racing!
One of my core memories will always be that after meeting my friends at the mall I went to buy the used speed racer DS game for 10 dollars at GameStop. I had checked to make sure it was there the previous day because I realized I would probably never see that game again. It was probably the first purchase I ever made without the knowledge of my parents, who didn't want to buy the game, and I was nervous spending so much money, which should tell you how old I was. I'll never forget the game and this movie ever, truly one of the greats.
I'm a huge SR fan. I collect memorabilia anytime I can. This movie is of the hook and different than anything ever made. I still watch the DVD to this day.
A clip not too long ago got me thinking of movies that made my childhood. Ended up always coming back to speed racer. I must’ve watched it dozens of times as a kid, still come back to rewatch it way to often
This movie was great and timeless. It made me get a little emotional . It took me back to when I was very young . Me and my sister used to watch the animated series and sing the theme song. .all the time. Great review ! 👍👍👍👍👍
33:30 This moment right here unlock a childhood memory. I remember having some of these as a kid. I think I had racer x's car with white wheels, and the sides were white to be a snow weathered variation. I absolutely loved it as a kid, seeing those again was an unexpected blast of nostalgia and now I feel old.
You got a Sub From me for covering Two of my Childhood Beloved Movies, Speed Racer and The hot wheels highway 35 and Acceleracers series. Thank you for bringing back some nostolgia.
I grew up with the original series, this movie nailed it so well. I've been selling this movie as an unrecognized masterpiece since it was released and I'll be pointing people to this video in the future. Perfect retrospective, thanks for your effort.
I don’t know why this took 7 months to show up into my recommended, when Speed Racer is my favorite movie of all time. Even though it’s late, I’m glad that it did. I could listen to praise about this movie for hours upon hours, and I’m so glad I’m not the only one.
I re-watched this movie again recently. When it first came out, not knowing anything our the anime, I thought it was far too silly for my liking. But I think after understanding why they made a lot of the design choices they made, the movie is starting to grow on me in a way I didn't expect.
One of the few movies that I can watch almost consecutively, the first two times I watched it it didn't really hit with me, but after seeing the minute details and really digging into the story it really just hit a lot harder. And exactly like he said the last 5 minutes of the entire movie have so much emotion. When he finally lands back on the wheels after crossing the finish line and the entire car shutters and sinks really helps to add to the motion of just how flat out he was going
This movie was my childhood, man, and I completely forgot lol My mom grew up with the original, but I grew up with both. It also hits me the same way Whisper of the Heart does, trying to better yourself as an artist and the like. While I relate to Shizuku, I aspire to be as confident in my hobby as Speed(I never will be), and I just greatly like this version of Speed and Rex in general. Comparing racing to creating art also hits close to home, because what I do, gaming and painting models, isn't a typical thing people would consider to be art at all. I don't feel like I'll ever be a decent enpugh painter to actually SELL anything, but I always try to finish my projects to the end, regardless of whether everything's gone wrong with them. This is also just artfully made, filmed, directed, choreographed(yes I'm comparing car-fu to dancing fite me), and an amazing modernization and love letter to the series, and I wish I could just have more of this movie. This movie feels and moves like an anime, and a comic. Perfect. As a kid I was never waiting for the next Racing scene, because the entire movie was so energetic in its style that it never once lost my attention, even after countless rewatches that I forgot happened more than a Decade later. And now that I'm older, I can appreciate the clever writing and analytic dichotomy of Car Racing and Capitalistic racing too. Just watching this movie, I can plainly see that the OG Speed Racer impacted the Wachowski sisters the same way THEIR Speed Racer impacted me, amd I think that's what hits best about this movie. You can feel the unending love, passion, and energy every person in the cast and crew put into it. Spritle and Chim-Chim are also amazing, and were my grandad's favorite part of the movie lol I always hated the children or funny characters as a kid because they always made me feel embarrassed for some reason. I was always embarrassed for liking cool things(probably cause I was bullied for it lol) but I adored their chaotic energy and I think Spritle's actor was f*cking MADE FOR THIS ROLE-
What an amazing video!! I love this movie so much; it's so nice to see it get the attention it deserves! It's clear how much thought and care went into this retrospective. I'm more than ready for this film to have a resurgence, people deserve to experience this masterpiece ~
I firstly watched this Speed Racer movie around 2nd quarter of 2008 (I forgot the exact date that I watched, but I was 7 (8 in July) at that time). I haven’t seen the very beginning of this movie, but I saw the rest. I’ve been confused all the time on what is going on and I thought the racers were dead due to the bubbly thing. Fast forward to 2022, I also rewatched multiple times of this movie and now I understand a bit of the situation. Aside from watching Speed Racer movie, I do have my own Speed Racer toys like the Mach 5 from the original and 2 T180 cars that Racer X drove in the 2008 movie (all from the KFC order) and playing a HW Speed Racer online games (not related to the Wii games) This childhood movie introduced me not only the SR franchise & the likes of the Mach 5 design (much prefer the 2008 design over the original design), but also the 3 cast of this movie; John Goodman (who was known to voice as “Autobot Hound” Transformers 4 & 5), Emile Hirsch (who played before as “Matthew Kidman” in “The Girl Next Door (2004) (I firstly watch the said movie in 2021 because I famillar him and his voice while watching a trailer or the movie itself), and I familiar Rain is because he was also featured in the Unilever Philippines’ shampoo commercial called “Clear” (released in the same year as Speed Racer). Without the release of this Speed Racer in the Philippine cinemas, I would never know about the franchise and as well the 3 (or 2) cast in my life before I also search them in the internet or possible streaming.
"You don't get behind the wheel of a T-180 because you're a driver, you do it because you're driven" - By the Lords I love that line.
Bruh. As a kid that line have me chills
Yep I love it too
Nice line about intrinsic motivation and using your own inner strength
Or the spanish version
"No te subes a un T-180 para conducir nada más. Lo haces porque es TU VIDA"
Honestly the line is just GOLD
That line is some of the best motivation I've ever heard
Exactly this. I had a long and deep conversation with my 11 year old nephew about this scene after we watched the movie.
I get emotional watching this scene.
Man this movie is so good
Stories on Reddit are all fake lol
As someone who worked on this .. thank you . So many years latter .. ah the insanity that was this movie

Yes I agree, those scenes helped me a little growing up. It made a beautiful impact on kid me
I applaud and agree. Those scenes hit me in the feels. And the races are top notch.
Jesus loves you man
I saw the movie two weeks after the release, ignoring opinions until I finally got to go to it with my little sister (whom I used to watch the show with on adult swim).

I love the balls to walls visual aesthetics that feels like its literally bringing a campy animated series to life. Great underrated gem.

Correction; ninja’s NEVER existed. There is no such thing as a ninja, they never existed in history. Same goes to berserker Vikings
I like how they did the world look like that could happen at any year, from an alternative 1970s to even the far Future
@@zzodysseuszz Not as they are shown on movies, but shinobis existied
@@superninja252 no, they didn’t. There are no records or depictions of ninjas ever in history. You’re spreading a myth without realising it. The same way as samurai never used swords and the katana is actually an ineffective weapon

Racer X (Rex): Sorry… but that’s for you to figure out. I just hope that when you do… that I’m there to see it!”

At long last, somebody recognized the absolute masterpiece that is speed racer. Genuinely made my whole day.
Glad it did!
This film was an insane visual beauty to witness in theaters when I was a kid .
Hell, I was 24 when this movie came out, and seeing it in IMAX was one of the best theater experiences I've ever had.
Put this movie back in theatres today, audiences would be singing a whole different tune. What it did in 2008, is now the norm today.
So True….👍
I thought I was one of a handful of people that love this movie. Turns out there are dozens of us! DOZENS!!
nice obscure call back
2008 was a banner year for movies and Speed Racer just so happened to be the one that drew the short straw.
So True….👌
Yeah timing was just unfortunate. It was released just one week after Iron Man and shortly before The Dark Knight and that was not easy to compete with.
@@ccricershonestly iron man was kinda the catalyst for a movie like this dying
I was watching this film today. It reminded me of the importance of sticking to what you love in spite of it getting corrupted by others.
Was still Blockbuster in 2008?
In what episode did they race on tracks like that? This movie is an insult
The movie really how much of a love letter to Racing it is, from showing the ugly side, to show why so many people like this type of sport
Transponders, son!
I don't care if critics hated it, we loved it :)

This detail is not mentioned much but the Grand Prix trophy at end IS THE TROPHY OF INDY 500 (also known as Borg-Warner Trophy)
They even had put the Milk Drinking tradition of Indy 500 as well on the movie, showing that the movie was not just a love letter for the anime but for racing in general
It's the greatest racing movie ever made
I try not to, but these days on re-watches, I get choked up at the very start--when he's "racing the ghost of Rex Racer." From the visualizing of the translucent image of Rex's car, to the reaction shots of Speed's parents contemplating the ramifications of Speed's victory, to Speed's last minute decision to pull back and honor his brother's record... I almost cry just thinking about it. And I'm a middle age man. And that's just the establishing act of the film.
It's a good movie.
When this movie came out, Match Box came out with a Speed Racer set, complete with the Mach 4, Mach 6, and Mach 6. I still have them.
Speed Racer: The film you never wanted to see, but that all UA-camrs love and recommend!
It’s so good 🔥💗🙏
Speed Racer and Scott Pilgrim have triple S tier casting and deserve to have awards based on them alone
@@LeopoldLitchensteinGlad you mentioned Sonic Transformed. Slept on game, honestly superior to MK8, and better comparison to Speed Racer.

I know I’m 2yrs too late here, but I’ve watched a lot of these videos and they all fail to notice my favourite detail. The Tag Heuer Monaco in his locker at the start, the sign that not only did they care about the original anime but also cared about motorsport as a whole.

YASSS! Awesome line. So funny!
This movie is a 10/10. I have probably watch it more than I should
To this day, if somebody asks me what my favorite movie is, I tell them Speed Racer.

One of my core memories will always be that after meeting my friends at the mall I went to buy the used speed racer DS game for 10 dollars at GameStop. I re-watched this movie again recently. When it first came out, not knowing anything our the anime, I thought it was far too silly for my liking. But I think after understanding why they made a lot of the design choices they made, the movie is starting to grow on me in a way I didn't expect.
The algorithm has found you now son. Keep on making this good, good content.
I'm so glad this got recommended to me via the UA-cam algorithm. You need more subs.
This movie was my childhood, man, and I completely forgot lol
My mom grew up with the original, but I grew up with both.
Spritle and Chim-Chim are also amazing, and were my grandad's favorite part of the movie lol
I always hated the children or funny characters as a kid because they always made me feel embarrassed for some reason. I was always embarrassed for liking cool things(probably cause I was bullied for it lol) but I adored their chaotic energy and I think Spritle's actor was f*cking MADE FOR THIS ROLE-
I loved binge watching the Speed Racer anime and I still do

I firstly watched this Speed Racer movie around 2nd quarter of 2008 (I forgot the exact date that I watched, but I was 7 (8 in July) at that time). I haven’t seen the very beginning of this movie, but I saw the rest. I’ve been confused all the time on what is going on and I thought the racers were dead due to the bubbly thing. Fast forward to 2022, I also rewatched multiple times of this movie and now I understand a bit of the situation. Aside from watching Speed Racer movie, I do have my own Speed Racer toys like the Mach 5 from the original and 2 T180 cars that Racer X drove in the 2008 movie (all from the KFC order) and playing a HW Speed Racer online games (not related to the Wii games)
This childhood movie introduced me not only the SR franchise & the likes of the Mach 5 design (much prefer the 2008 design over the original design), but also the 3 cast of this movie; John Goodman (who was known to voice as “Autobot Hound” Transformers 4 & 5), Emile Hirsch (who played before as “Matthew Kidman” in “The Girl Next Door (2004) (I firstly watch the said movie in 2021 because I famillar him and his voice while watching a trailer or the movie itself), and I familiar Rain is because he was also featured in the Unilever Philippines’ shampoo commercial called “Clear” (released in the same year as Speed Racer).
Without the release of this Speed Racer in the Philippine cinemas, I would never know about the franchise and as well the 3 (or 2) cast in my life before I also search them in the internet or possible streaming.
Speed Racer used the "when free bird starts playing" before kingsman
